Lightning responsible for mine site bushďŹ re scares By Tamara Binamat Lightning strikes over the past week are responsible for causing bushfires near two major mining sites in the Pilbara. Last Saturday October 26 a fire burnt through bush on Barrow Island, only a few kilometres from oil and gas company Chevron’s Gorgon project. A Chevron spokesperson said company emergency response personnel attended the fire located at the northern end of Barrow Island.

The fire burnt through spinifex and scrub; no one was injured or at risk during the blaze. Only two days before, around 1,500 Fortescue Metals Group workers were evacuated after a bushfire ignited by lightning burnt near the Cloudbreak minesite. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the blaze burnt through about 30,000 hectares of scrub. No lives were in danger and the only damage to property occurred when fire burnt around the camp and damaged some plastic piping for plumbing.

A bird’s eye view of Tim Winton’s Eyrie By Elise Batchelor It’s winter 1993 and cold sweat drips from my armpits through my Jenny Kee inspired windcheater. Sauntering with faux nonchalance from my hired bomb to the back door of this simple fishing village home, I’m greeted by a sun-shining face. Surely Denise Winton is going to notice the post-it note reading “fraud” sliding off my sweat-beaded forehead and usher me back home to Melbourne before I speak? Strangely, however, she welcomes me in, a small child trotting about her ankles. I breathe out. I then realise I haven’t done nearly enough of this (supposedly) instinctive mechanical action since commencing the drive from Perth a couple of hours ago. But the thought dissolves as Mrs Winton points to a far door. I suck it all in again and head on down to the room. He’s behind a large desk, but the fish tank’s larger. Now that’s a fish tank, I think. Or maybe say. The thing is, I can’t think. Straight at least, and my equilibrium is beholden to my dot matrix print out of compelling (read “hopefully not too lame”) questions for my English Masters interview. You see, the problem is, I’ve fallen in love. With a book. And not just any book, but a book that has quickly, already, become the country’s favourite. So here I sit opposite a long haired, aquarium loving, 33-year-old Tim Winton, clutching my questions and my Cloudstreet, reminding myself to breathe. *** Twenty years later, I’m interviewing Winton again. A lot’s happened over two decades. I managed to write that Master’s thesis and move on from nineties fashion. Tim Winton went on to write,

oh, about a dozen more books, including several massive bestsellers. Now Cloudstreet is a miniseries, Lockie Leonard a kids’ TV favourite, The Turning an enthralling film and his last novel Breath made everyone gasp for it. Today we’re here for Eyrie, Winton’s first novel in five years. It’s a fact that makes five years sound like donkey’s yonks. But truly, most of us would struggle to create stories like Winton’s if we had both a lifetime and a ripper aquarium. Inside Eyrie hides its main character Keely, a once highpowered, now fallen, advocate for an environmental agency who Winton describes to me in a lyrical nutshell. “His career has gone down the dunny,” he says of this character, lost to the world in a decrepit Fremantle high rise. The book’s title itself is ironic in myriad ways, an eyrie being an eagle’s nest, high above land and sea, the perfect place to watch over everything, eye off your next target. But Keely’s career has fallen prey to the tidal surge and suck of politics and power and, as such, the novel hints at Winton’s own questions about not only what we value in society, but who. “As we’ve become more and more prosperous and more and more dragged away from the idea that we’re a community and closer to the idea that we’re all now just an economy we tend to forget the people… who were left behind in the boom, and I suppose that was part of my interest,” Winton says. His own voluntary environmental and humanitarian interests have perhaps also influenced Keely’s fictional journey, and mining fixated West Australian society is well and truly in the mix. So I ask Winton whether we’ve built our houses (and dongas) on sand. “I’m no sage; I can’t see the future, but I do wonder how firm our foundations are,” he ponders.

Award-winning author Tim Winton - Photo by Hank Kordas. “I’m not sure if we’ve developed an idea of being a smart country that makes things and invents things and creates things, because we’re so preoccupied with just being able to dig things up. “There’s nothing wrong with mining, there’s nothing wrong with having a resource economy and we shouldn’t be whinging about being prosperous, but we should be planning for the future and I think we might have wee-ed this stuff up against the wall.” I release a breath and laugh. That’s it, I realise; that’s why Winton’s writing enthrals me. Keely, like many of the author’s characters, might be down and out, but there’s that rudimentary, poetic beauty in people who look misery in the mirror and can have an unaffected laugh at their own expense. And you sense that Winton’s watching us all, ready to tell our stories, especially if we’re prepared to face our fragility too and have a crack at making the really important things count. **** Later, after our interview, I revisit a paragraph in Eyrie. Melissa was from a stolid suburb of Perth. Wembley, if memory served. She’d gone on to teach history and English. Went back and did a master’s degree. Or maybe it was a doctorate. But last he heard she was up at the mines along with everybody else… Watching us all? We might like to think this … Or maybe not?

Public Notice

By Tamara Binamat It would seem almost everyone who visits and lives in the Pilbara region will be affected by the mining industry.

Marble Bar Road Northern Railway Crossing BHP Billiton Iron Ore advises that an upgrade of the Marble Bar Road Northern Railway Crossing has been completed and there will be an increase to the frequency of rail traffic at this level crossing.

From tourists to business owners, the wide-reaching enormity of the industry has ripple effects not only through local communities, but the world. ABC Open’s multimedia project Mining Life was launched last week and is a collation of stories, photographs and quotes about industry’s impact on communities. And the national project is probably most relevant in the Pilbara region, where most of the residential community is employed in mining-related industries. ABC Open Pilbara producer Susan Standen says anybody can be involved in this big Australian story. “We’ve got some photos of mining gear, people in mining communities eating at the mess area and shops full of high-vis [clothing],” Susan said. “We’re surrounded by miners and people that are a part of the industry. “So it’s a fantastic opportunity to get involved in the local community because everyone around here has something to do with mining, whether they are miners or families of miners or local businesses trying to

work with the industry.” Community members can contribute to the Mining Life project in many ways, from simply uploading a captioned photo through Instagram using the hash tag #mininglifeabc, to writing a 500-word feature. And Susan is offering a writing workshop today Saturday November 2 in Dampier to get you started. The 500-word blog writing workshop will run from 9-11am at the Dampier Library. If you can’t make it to Dampier, Susan can travel to anywhere in the Pilbara to assist groups of people with their video, photography and writing contribution. The Mining Life project can be found at open.abc.net.au/ projects and runs until May 2014. Contact Susan on 0419 335 189 or email standen.susan@abc. net.au for more information.

We welcome your feedback on any aspect of our operations.

Families on site for Rail Fun Day Around 300 family and friends of Rio Tinto Rail employees were treated to a private tour of the mining giant’s operations at 7 Mile in Dampier last Saturday October 19. A total of 11 tours were held throughout the day and more than 110 people had the chance to go on site to have a closer look at locomotives, ore cars, train driver simulator and track maintenance technology. Visitors were informed with displays off site featuring information about AutoHaul, emergency response, access road hazards and permits,

health and wellness programs and employment information. The face painting and miniature railway ride proved a hit with the younger visitors and a few of the mums and dads also had a spin in the miniature train, which was painted to match the new locomotives. Other activities included a sausage sizzle, energy bike, spin the wheel quiz and rail historical information display. Rio Tinto Rail Maintenance general manager Heath Harnden said the Family

Day aimed to provide an opportunity for employees to show family and friends how they contributed to the success of the organisation. “When you consider we operate and maintain the largest heavy haul train network in the world, our employees are justifiably proud to be part of such an immense operation,” Mr Harnden said. “This is the first Rail Family day we have held in for a number of years and we are keen to turn this into an annual event.”

echonews echonews Karratha’s newest housing precinct offers rent-to-buy incentive 8

By Tamara Binamat Karratha’s newest estate is officially open following a grand cocktail party with stakeholders and a family fun day for the local Karratha community. The new Tambrey precinct, developed and built by the Alcock Brown-Neaves (ABN) Group, is now complete and a ‘lease before you buy’ incentive has been launched in a bid to make homeownership more affordable. As part of the initiative, a selection of the completed homes at the new community, coined as ‘better than the best street in Karratha’, can be leased for an initial three months, with an option for the occupying tenant to then purchase the property and have their rent subsequently refunded. Dale Alcock, Managing Director of the ABN Group, said the new option represented a fresh and exciting approach

to renting and also to home-ownership. “If you need to lease a home in Karratha, this initiative enables families to move into the fantastic new Tambrey community sooner and, in effect, try before they buy, or rent to purchase,” Mr Alcock said. “This is a fantastic option which has never previously been available in Karratha. “It’s great for people who are unsure if they want to purchase a home in the town because they can effectively lease the property first and make certain it suits their needs. “And from there, if they decide to purchase after the three-month lease period, they will be refunded what they have already paid in rent, it’s a great winwin opportunity all round and we’re really excited to be launching it.” And with estates like Tambrey popping up around the Pilbara at a regular rate, it

seems the boom is not over yet. General Manager ABN Realty Peter Gianoli said with completion of the first 41 houses in stage one, the company is now looking to build another 42 houses in stage two, due to commence mid-2014. “Even though fly in, fly out will never

disappear, ultimately families will want to settle for a better life, so we’re futureproofing for that,” Mr Gianoli said. Prices at Tambrey range from $738,000 for a three-bedroom house, while four-bedroom houses average around $850,000.

New website revolutionises view of WA A new website has been launched to bring together information on property boundaries, public transport networks, the location of schools, health services and the latest census data. It will also provide satellite updates on the location and intensity of fires across Western Australia. Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the website, LOCATE, provided access to comprehensive governmentsourced data and imagery. The online service can be accessed at http://www.locate. wa.gov.au. “LOCATE will put information at the fingertips of home buyers, real estate investors and developers to help them make informed decisions when purchasing property,” the Minister said. “It also provides historical

maps dating back to the 1800s of Perth and country towns, along with aerial photography of the State that can be layered over Landgate’s most recent aerial imagery. “LOCATE allows users to take a step back in time and see how the State’s landscape has been developed. “It’s fascinating to see how communities have changed over the decades to accommodate our growing and evolving State.” Hotspots data from Landgate’s FireWatch service, which identifies fires across the State, is also available on LOCATE in real time. Fires are detected and monitored by land monitoring satellites every few hours. The hotspots data also shows the intensity and effect on the land as the fires are burning.

“This is critical information for emergency services, farmers and land management professionals in discovering, tracking and managing fires,” the Minister said. “It can also help residents make decisions if a fire is near their home.” The website was developed by Landgate and is the first product to be released under the Government’s $23million Location Information Strategy. LOCATE is part of one of the strategy’s key projects, the redevelopment of the Shared Location Information Platform. Data has been provided from a broad range of State and Commonwealth agencies such as Landgate, Main Roads WA, Public Transport Authority, State departments of Planning, Mines and Petroleum, Water Corporation and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Colours of our Country The eighth and largest ever Colours of our Country Pilbara Aboriginal art exhibition has been declared the largest ever, resulting in sales of 228 paintings and artefacts, generating more than $204,000 for the artists, their art groups and communities. Since its inaugural exhibition in 2006 to commemorate Rio Tinto’s 40th year of operations in Western Australia this annual event in Perth has raised more than $1,500,000 in sales to Pilbara artists. A crowd of almost 180 people attended a special opening night event on September 25, where Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive Andrew Harding welcomed special guests including the Honourable John Day MLA, Minister

for Culture and the Arts, who officially opened the exhibition. This year, four of the Pilbara’s most talented artists took visitors behind the scenes of the exhibition via an artists-inresidence program. Loreen and Kathy Samson from Roebourne Art Group and Clifton Mack and Maudie Jerrold from YinjaaBarni Art each spent several days at the exhibition developing new paintings and sharing their creative arts inspiration. The Art Gallery of WA chose a piece of work by Allery Sandy that will form part of the State Art Collection. This annual exhibition is an opportunity for Rio Tinto employees and art exhibition visitors to deepen their

Defining moment for local filmmaker ScreenWest and National Indigenous Television’s (NITV) joint Factual Television Initiative is approaching fruition, with three documentaries from three Indigenous filmmakers commencing filming throughout Western Australia this month. Set to broadcast as part of NITV’s Defining Moments series in 2014, each documentary will explore a pivotal moment in a person’s life, and how that moment has shaped and defined them. Following a two-day story development workshop delivered by ScreenWest and NITV in August, three filmmakers Tyson Mowarin, Todd Russell and Dot West were each selected to develop their own 26-minute documentary. Mowarin’s story will be will be filmed in Roebourne, West will be shooting in Darwin and Broome, and Russell will be based in Perth. Metamorflix – the production company of Logie award-winning documentarian Renee Kennedy – was selected to manage the production of the three documentaries. Kennedy’s factual and documentary producer credits include 2011 science documentary The Silent Epidemic which received a 2011 Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) Award, and 2007 documentary Constructing

Australia: The Bridge, which won a 2008 Logie Award for Most Outstanding Documentary. ScreenWest Chief Executive Ian Booth said ScreenWest’s total investment of $305,000 into the Factual Television Initiative provided a fantastic opportunity for these emerging to mid-level West Australian Indigenous filmmakers. “The WA Indigenous film sector has produced some outstanding screen projects in recent years such as Yagan and Jandamarra’s War,” said Mr Booth. “This is a great opportunity for emerging to mid-level Indigenous filmmakers to add to this list of accomplished documentary projects, and to develop and enhance their skills.” NITV Channel Head Tanya Denning said the broadcasting channel is thrilled to be involved with these productions. “We are certain that these will contribute significantly to the impressive and exciting Indigenous filmmaking projects on NITV in 2014,” she said. “Furthermore it will cement our dedication to promoting and spreading the messages and experiences of Australia’s first peoples.” The documentaries are scheduled to be delivered in February 2014.

understanding of the Pilbara and its Traditional Owners, and also purchase a piece of Pilbara artwork. Three Rio Tinto Iron ore Pilbara employees exhibited work in this year’s exhibition. Marlon Cooke, a plant operator from Tom Price mine who has been with Rio Tinto for 10 years, exhibited and sold a range of unique artefacts including spears and shields that he carved by hand from the wood of Mulga and Paperbark trees in the Pilbara. “It was my first time my artwork has been shown in Perth,” Marlon said. “Meeting colleagues and members of the public at the exhibition and talking to them about my art made me feel proud. “I’m looking forward to being involved again in 2014, and have already started thinking about what new work I can create.”

Tropical Cyclone Rusty thrashed Port Hedland in February this year.

Free Weekly 2-3 November 2013

Greg Browning, Ngarene Brooks and Peter Cameron on the cyclone awareness tour Photo by Tamara Binamat.

Official cyclone outlook comes with complacency warning By Tamara Binamat The official cyclone outlook for the 2013/14 season was officially announced at community forums around the Pilbara late last month, as part of a regional cyclone awareness tour. Officials from the Bureau of Meteorology, Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Department of Child protection said although the outlook predicts an average season, community members should not be complacent. Acting manager of the severe weather section with the Bureau of Meteorology, Greg Bowning, said the North West of

Australia should prepare for five cyclones this season, of which two are predicted to make coastal impact.

“If the climate conditions did change, we would provide that information in the update [in January],” Browning said.

“Near-average climate conditions and the climate drivers are all indicating a near-average season is likely,” he said.

“If a La Nina system was developing, then we could be in for a more active season but indications at this stage suggest a near-average season is what we expect.”

Browning said the patch between Broome and Exmouth is the most likely location for a coastal crossing, but that the whole north West coast is at risk.

“If Karratha got impacted in a category four or category five cyclone, everyone will remember this as being the worst season, even though it was an average season. “The risk lies in the consequences of that one cyclone and people have to be aware. “Prepare as if it’s going to be the worst-case scenario and prepare now.

Residents should prepare for the first cyclone to form around Christmas time.

And although an average cyclone season is what officials predict, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services is warning residents against complacency.

The BoM predicted an average outlook last cyclone season and the North West experienced six cyclone formations, of which three were severe.

“It only takes one severe cyclone to impact on a community and this season could be that season,” district officer of East Pilbara Peter Cameron said.

For more information about cyclones and how to stay safe head to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services website at www.dfes.wa.gov.au.

“Don’t think you can prepare within [a cyclone] because you’re going to come up short.”

Pilbara benefits from 40 years of child protection support Child Abuse Prevention Service (CAPS) is marking 40 years of service to Australia’s children and families with the launch of a national campaign encouraging all Australians to take preventative action to keep children safe. CAPS operates Australia’s only free national telephone service dedicated solely to child abuse prevention along with a range of popular parent education, community development and support programs. Founded as a helpline in 1973 by pioneering child protection campaigner Dorothy Ginn, the organisation expanded to

offer offender programs that were considered groundbreaking at the time and counselling and family crisis centres. Throughout its years of operation, CAPS has received more than one million calls for support from across the country, including 617 calls from the Pilbara region alone. CAPS telephone support workers provide over-thephone advice, information and referrals to families in crisis, children in need of help and community members with concerns about the welfare of a child. “We are proud to celebrate our 40th year of

service to the community and there has never been a more pressing need for the work of protecting children,” CAPS Chair Andrew Grech said. “The reach and impact of child abuse is devastating and ongoing. “This campaign reminds us that we are all on the frontline and we all have a responsibility to prevent child abuse.” Although there is no easy solution to stop child abuse, effective prevention and early intervention make a significant difference. As part of its national campaign, CAPS has released a digital ‘Prevention Pack’ to support families in developing vital protective factors and

understanding how these factors can keep children safe. The free pack, which includes a range of resources for parents, carers and children can be downloaded directly from www. childabuseprevention.com. au. CAPS works to alleviate child abuse in all its forms through family support and community education. It runs a free, national telephone support line (1800 688 009), support groups, parent education, a family support program, community development and outreach initiatives.

Historic day for mental illness sufferers Mental Health Minister Helen Morton described new mental health legislation as a historic step in strengthening the rights and protection of some of Western Australia’s most vulnerable people. Mrs Morton said the introduction of the Mental Health Bill into State Parliament last week would also ensure greater family and carer involvement with the treatment and care of loved ones. “Modern mental health care is about the individual as part of a wider social network, with family, friends and carers providing important support for those experiencing mental illness,” she said. “That is why I am proud to introduce today’s Mental Health Bill and the vital changes it will make to the lives of families, carers and individuals experiencing mental health issues. “This Bill will ensure they are kept informed and give them a greater say in treatment, support and discharge planning.” The proposed legislation includes

input from more than 1,300 people in the community and the sector. In reflection of this, the Bill also provides new levels of rights protection for people who are seriously ill, providing enhanced processes and safeguards around involuntary treatment. The Bill will halve regular review periods for adult involuntary patients, which will now occur every three months, while child involuntary patients will be reviewed at monthly intervals. Stricter controls regarding the use of the life-saving treatment Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) will be introduced as part of the Bill including banning its use on children less than 14 years of age. The current legislation does not place any lower age limits at which a child can receive ECT. Responding to community feedback, the Minister said it was absolutely clear that sterilisation was not a treatment for mental illness within the Bill. Mrs Morton said it was important that

for the first time, the Bill paved the way for traditional healers and elders to be involved in the treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing mental illness. “Today is a huge step forward for WA’s mental health sector and at this time it is important to acknowledge the outstanding contribution and dedication of the State’s mental health sector workforce, spanning public, private and community organisations,” she said. Clinicians will be closely involved in planning the implementation of the proposed new legislation. An important component of this will be the distribution of comprehensive and accessible education materials to assist all stakeholders in understanding, implementing and upholding the requirements of the Bill. It is expected that the changes set out in the Bill will begin approximately one year after it is passed by Parliament. Health Minister Kim Hames introduced the Bill into State Parliament last Wednesday October 23.

Many people don’t realize that they have options to stay in Australia – often as a permanent resident.

• • • • • • •

Being a migrant myself, I understand the difficulties involved in moving to a new country. I have been living and working in WA as an Australian registered migration agent for over 10 years and have assisted several thousand people to obtain temporary and permanent residence visas. My commitment to you is that I will give you a clear assessment of your visa options and whether you have a good chance of success. If I don’t think your application will succeed I will tell you this up-front. My firm specializes in Permanent Residence visas such as Employer Nomination (186), Regional Sponsored Migration (187), General Skilled (189/190) as well as Temporary work (457) and Partner Visas. If you are interested in understanding your visa options, please give me a call

Karratha Swim Club trained by best By Grace Keogh, KASC member On October 25, 26 and 27 the Karratha Amateur Swim Club was lucky enough to have Kareena Preston come up from Perth to give us a massive weekend of coaching. Kareena is a silver license swimming consultant and trains swimmers from beginners to state, national and International levels.

Port of Call

With over 20 years of coaching we were very lucky for the experience!

For Massage

Come and meet one of our sexy, sensual ladies in a discreet and relaxing environment. Every evening from 7pm till late. Monday - Friday days by appointment. Most major credit cards accepted.

Sophia

Over the massive weekend we worked on many things such as drills, turns, dives, stroke counting and technique. We also hopped out of the water for sessions on nutrition, goal setting and controlling our nerves, which was very helpful and will make us much better swimmers. With the Pilbara Championships at Exmouth coming up in a few weeks we have a chance to practice what we learned and that will help us to get personal best scores and maybe some medals.

Thank you to Kareena Preston for the wonderful experience.

The Betta Billfish Bonanza was fished by almost thirty boats, that came to target the sailfish and marlin for the three days. Sailfish dominated the statistics again for this competition and the gulf waters produced some great numbers for anglers and crew. The team aboard Pelagic Hooker tagged a staggering 19 sailfish on day two of the event, which set them well ahead of the fleet and resulted in them taking out Champion Boat Overall for the competition with 30 tagged fish for the happy crew. Junior anglers were wellsupported in this event and it is great to see youngsters getting in amongst the billfish. All results can be found on the Exmouth Game Fishing Club’s website and Facebook page. Another great billfish story this week is that of local angler Ben Knight capturing a potential Australian record sailfish on fly line. The fish weighed 23.8kg and was caught on 6kg line in the gulf onboard the boat Weapon. Ben is an avid fly fishing angler and catching any fish on fly can be challenging, add to that billfish and

light line, and that makes it even more of a challenge! Ben is pictured this week with his great fish that was weighed in at the EGFC. There has also been some big blue marlin caught this past week by many different crews, along with a smattering of striped marlin and lots of small blacks. The shore fishing has been great lately with several people reporting good mixed bags of fish including whiting, squid and queenfish on the gulf side, with spangled emperor, bluebone and trevally on the west side. In the marina there has also been plenty of action with bait balls being hammered by queenfish and small trevally.

Karratha BMX Club shines at State Championships In early October, 26 Karratha BMX Club riders and their families drove to Kalgoorlie’s KAL-VEGAS BMX track to take part in the 2013 State Titles. The track has a 6-metre start gate (nearly three times higher than our own) and proved to be a challenge for most of our riders. This hurdle was particularly

difficult to overcome by our young Sprockets (7-years-old and under). Once past the first corner our riders and their skills began to shine. Four of our riders managed to excel in their classes bringing home four State champion trophies with Dylan Bennets in 1st place in the 11-12 Cruiser category, Cruz Musitano 1st in 12 Boys, Corey Davis 1st in 16 boys and Rodney

Gethin 1st in 45+ Mens. In total, we saw 18 top eight finishes. This result can be attributed to the excellent commitment from riders and coaches as well as the elite coaches that visit several times a year thanks to the support given by Rio Tinto. Coach John “Benno” Bennetts was very happy with the club’s results.
