• The LIA fire as seen from a private plane

By Tamara Binamat About 30 firefighters from Karratha and Dampier were called to an out-of-control fire on Tuesday September 3, which had the potential to threaten lives and property. Rohan Aird, acting area manager for the Pilbara at the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, said that at about 4pm Tuesday, emergency crews were called to BT’s Bakery in Karratha’s Light Industrial Area to control a grass fire. “It appears to have started in grass at the front of the bakery site then spread to a lay down area directly

behind,” Aird said. “Unfortunately from there it got into some foam and fibreglass flotation devices then spread to some oil drums, gas cylinders and old used oil.” The fire threatened the offshore equipment at the adjoining Ceva Logistics yard. A number of roads were closed and police attended to manage traffic. The fire caused about $2m worth of damage and burnt a 60x60m area. Mr Aird said although investigations are still continuing, it appears the fire was accidently ignited with a cigarette. “We’re treating the fire as accidental

at this point in time,” he said. The fire took approximately four hours to extinguish and Mr Aird is prompting the community to be vigilant this bushfire season. “Based on the fact that we’ve had a very wet winter there’s going to be a lot of vegetation that has the potential to dry out and become fuel for fire,” he said. “The community is going to have to be really mindful of that and far more careful with disposing of cigarette butts, lighting of fires and even working outside with grinders. “And report any fires early so we can get on top of them.”

Parents hope to slow highway traffic near new Karratha high school By Tamara Binamat The new Karratha Senior High School relocation from the suburban area of Bulgarra to the Dampier Highway is now complete, but motorists and young students will have to take it upon themselves to be aware of each other. The 70kph stretch of road in front of the school is also in the middle of the town of Karratha, but Main Roads said they have no plans to make the area a 40kph school zone. “It is not normal practice for a school zone to be placed on a primary distributor road due to operational and safety issues,” a Main Roads spokesperson said. “Despite what the signs say, [motorists] may not reduce their speed, [which creates] issues in motorists travelling at varying speeds. “When this facility was under construction, the concern raised was not necessarily associated with the high school students but those potentially younger children accessing the leisure complex at different times during the day and night. “This situation will not be resolved by a school zone.” The organisation confirmed that as

of August 27 there had been no request for a school zone, but Main Roads and the Shire of Roebourne were working together to improve pedestrian access to the school and other facilities. Main Roads said pedestrian crossing points have been moved further away from a roundabout in front of the school to allow greater certainty for pedestrians regarding vehicle movements. But Greg Kelly, principal at KSHS, said the road is still a big concern. “We will continue to consult with the Shire and Main Roads to ensure the safety of our students coming and going to and from school,” he said. “The Department of Education, the Shire of Roebourne and Main Roads WA have been in constant collaboration and communication regarding the Dampier Road traffic zone in front of KSHS. “The school has been extremely vigilant in providing as much information as possible to students about crossing Dampier Road safely. “If everyone takes this responsibility on board and they are very conscious of what is happening when in the vicinity of the school, there should be no need to create a school zone that will possibly impact on the movement of traffic in the area.” Karratha mother of five Corinne

Munro has her youngest child in Year 8 at KSHS. Munro said more needs to be done to ensure the safety of students walking to KSHS. “There’s a 70kph speed limit and students are supposed to be crossing at the pedestrian crossing but they don’t,” she said. “They’re talking and laughing and they don’t take much notice of the traffic.” Although there are now flashing signs warning motorists of children crossing, Munro believes this is not enough to ensure the safety of students. “They need the old [school zone] signs from the old site and to make it a school zone,” she said. “Some of them have just come from primary school and they are used to going to a high school with a school zone. “They’ve put the high school on a main road therefore it’s the responsibility of the relevant organisation to make sure visitors know it’s a school. “We need a permanent sign - not just those temporary flashing lights.” Main Roads is currently reviewing the need for installing a school zone at this location.

The race for Durack reaches finish

• Barry Haase’s succesor will be announced this weekend

By Tamara Binamat The announcement of Australia’s new Federal Government tonight will mark the end of campaigning for 10 candidates hoping to win the seat of Durack. Durack covers the North West of Australia, including

the northern and central parts of the Wheatbelt, the Mid West, Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley regions. After outgoing MP Barry Haase announced in June he would not recontest Durack, Labor’s Daron Keogh, The Greens’ Ian James, Liberal Party candidate Melissa Price and The Nationals’ Shane Van Styn are the major party candidates chasing the seat, . Australian Christians Party candidate Grahame Gould, Rise Up Australia’s Shane Foreman, Citizens Electoral Council candidate Judy Sudholz and Family First candidate Ian Rose have also put their names forward. Interestingly, there are also candidates from two high profile new parties: Aaron Todd for Katter’s Australian Party and Des Headland for the Palmer United Party. The North West of Australia has been dubbed the powerhouse of the nation and whoever the winner of Durack is will now represent the seat with the nation’s highest proportion of mining employees and the third highest proportion of Indigenous residents. What do you think of Durack’s new leader? news@ pilbaraecho.com.au.

Pilbara bodybuilding on the up By Tamara Binamat

our gym when the competition was announced] and a lot thought about entering it, but only a few made it through,” Shelley said.

Last weekend, fitness fanatics paraded their muscly physiques to an enthusiastic audience at the inaugural International Natural Bodybuilding Association North West Titles at Karratha’s Tambrey Tavern.

Among those local competitors, Rachel McKay won fourth place in the Bikini Division, while Miranda Pickering finished second in the Fitness Model Division and Shari Tindall and Brooke Turner came third and sixth, respectively.

This is the first time the Pilbara region has held a sporting competition of this kind and personal training manager from Life and Soul Gym Shelley Snellin said it was a big deal.

“People have to realise how much commitment it takes to get their body to what the [other competitors] get theirs to,” Shelley said.

“I’ve lived in Karratha for 24-years, and never have I seen anything like this before,” she said. Photos by Tamara Binamat

And if you’re dreaming of entering the INBA North West titles next time, Shelley said it’s a real possibility so start training and get advice now.

“We’ve always had to travel to get to competitions like that, and I think it’s a great experience and opens people up to new things in the Pilbara.

“Do it - see where you can get your body to,” she urged.

“Sport has always been important in Karratha and we see local people excelling in sport, so why not bodybuilding?”

“The most unexpected person can make it onto the stage, so don’t count anyone out.”

Shelley said the North West Titles were a sign that the Pilbara was now home to a more diverse range of sports. And with the Karratha event attracting competitors from around the Pilbara and the state, it can only help grow the sport of bodybuilding in the region, according to Shelley.

Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry CEO John Lally said some of the biggest names and brightest minds in Australian business, industry and politics would deliver thought-provoking presentations and panel discussions over the summit’s two days. “We have handpicked 20 speakers to provide expert advice and opinion on the important role economic diversification will play in the region’s future growth and development,” Lally said. “We’ve worked hard to invite speakers that can contribute to the conversation around what Karratha needs to do to become a resilient, sustainable population centre. “By 2035 it is expected that more than 50,000 people will call Karratha home, but who or what holds the key to the city?” Lally said speakers would be flown in from across the country for this year’s Pilbara Pulse - with Chanel 7’s International and Foreign Affairs editor, Dr Keith Suter, making a return appearance. Following the 2012 Pilbara Pulse Economic Summit, Dr Suter published a story in Oxford University’s Contemporary Review in which he

“For the first time in Australia’s recent two centuries of history, northern Australia will start to shape the country’s destiny.” Dr Suter will return to the stage by request to discuss the biggest global opportunities and challenges facing Australia over the next six-to12-months and the potential impact these could have on energy and resources markets. He will be joined by former Premier and Treasurer of Western Australia Richard Court, whose father Sir Charles Court pioneered the Pilbara’s iron ore industry in the 1960s and later the oil and gas sector. During his 19 years in Parliament Richard Court continued his father’s LNG push into new global markets securing the state’s long term economic success. FORTRESS HOME BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

Pilbara dads got more than just a new pair of socks this Father’s Day. Thanks to the Karratha Biker’s Association’s inaugural Car and Bike Show on Sunday September 1, many were able to also spend the day with their families in Dampier fantasising about their dream machine. And with more than 90 gleaming bikes and cars on show, even KBA president Liam Lennon was surprised by the variety in town. “There’s a lot of cars and bikes locked away in garages around town that you don’t see … so when we saw them turn up at the gate for the show, it is like, ‘Are you kidding me, have a look at these?’” Liam said. “We have some class acts on display, especially among the vintage bikes.” This year’s show included more than 20 judging categories and motorbikes ranging from American Harley Davidsons and Italian MV Agustas to vintage British Nortons and BSAs. Among the cars there were 4WDs, Commodores and Skylines through to old Dodges and Model A Fords as well as American muscle cars. Yet, in the eyes of the thousands of locals attending the show, it was Bevan Waugh’s 1957 Chevrolet 210 pickup and Mark Sedden’s 2008 turbo charged Harley Davidson Night Train that were the pick of the bunch.

The duo were voted the People’s Choice winners. Other proud owners, such as long-time resident Deborah Napier, seemed to bring their whole garage with them. Deborah had her pimped-out Nissan Skyline, 1962 EK Holden and Harley Davidson Softail Slim motorbike on show. Jodie Franssen had one of the biggest cars on the day, with her racing-red Pontiac stretching almost as long as a limousine – a lucky thing, then that she had left all the polishing work to her husband. Fellow entrant Andrew Hyde was another to cheekily deceive his partner. His wife had previously owned their 1971 Falcon GT ute until Andrew rebuilt the engine with so much added grunt that she no longer felt comfortable behind the wheel and handed over ownership to him. Yet not all cars on display were pristine showpieces. Kelvin Lemke purchased his 1964 small Dodge truck more than 30-years ago with the idea of using it to tow a caravan around Australia when he eventually retired. Having stripped the car bare and rebuilt it from scratch, his dream came true when from April 2011 to September 2012, he Photos by Ben Leahy and his wife holidayed 45,000kms around the And it is that spirit that has KBA country – attracting plenty president Liam Lennon promising to of “thumbs ups” and photos bring the event back next year as well. along the way. “This is our first year that we’ve done And despite one major breakdown on the trip, the car the show, and we’ll just keep doing it every Father’s Day from now on,” Liam is still going strong. said. “I didn’t build it as a show “It is a great spot here, families can truck, I built it to use – it is take the kids down to the beach and on the road everyday,” Kelvin over to the [Dampier] Markets across said. “I put it in the show today the road.

Hopes that summit speeds up Business Park plans By Ben Leahy The Pilbara’s small business centre remains committed to building multimillion dollar business incubators across the region and will use October’s Pilbara Pulse Economic Summit to further push the cause. In August last year, the West Pilbara Small Business Centre unveiled concept plans to build a $38m Business Park in Karratha that will then provide a model for similar centres in Tom Price, Onslow, Hedland and Newman. The parks would act as incubators for Pilbara start-up businesses by providing them with professional support services and discounted commercial and residential rental space. Small business centre chairman Grant Cucel will give a talk about the Business Parks at the October 3-4 Pilbara Pulse in Karratha and said the high profile summit was a chance to give the project a much needed boost. “My presentation at the Pilbara Pulse will be an update of where the project is at and also a chance to discuss why an incubator is so important in assisting the growth of small businesses and longer term economic diversification,” he said. Plans for the incubators come as the Pilbara currently has only half the number of businesses that a place with a similar population elsewhere in Western Australia might be expected to have. Over the past decade, many Pilbara small businesses have struggled to survive or get a foothold as the mining boom has driven local operating costs, wages and commercial and residential rentals sky high. A recent report by Regional Development Australia Pilbara found that local businesses in 2012 paid salaries that were 37 per cent higher than in Perth and often needed to provide subsidised accommodation to retain their staff. “Pilbara costs of doing business are far higher than the rest of WA and most of Australia,” the RDAP’s report said. But Pilbara business centre chairman Cucel said Pilbara incubators could help start-up businesses overcome these challenges. He said incubator in areas, such as Perth and Albany, had already been proven to help create more small businesses. “The chance of success and growth

for a business that goes through a small business incubator is significantly higher than those that don’t,” Cucel said. With this in mind, the small business centre commissioned a consultants report in 2012, which developed a concept plan for a $38m Karratha Business Park. The report found that the park would return more than $200m to the local economy in its first 10-years and create more than 460 new jobs. A key to the park’s success was its ability to provide subsidised rental spaces for up to 28 businesses across three properties. This would ideally include 10 workshops in the Light Industrial Area and18 office and retail spaces in a multistorey CBD building. Each of the 28 businesses would also be offered subsidised staff accommodation at either the CBD development or another suburban property, according to the plans. Yet, more importantly, Cucel said, the incubators provided critical support services. This included having a full time staff member, who could advise the start-up businesses in financial planning, taxation and accounting, legal compliance, internal checks and balances and regular reviews to ensure they progressed toward their goals. Then there was the opportunity to informally exchange ideas “around the water cooler” with other small businesses resident in the incubator. Yet, 12-months since unveiling concept plans for the Karratha Business Park, the challenge remains getting it off the ground. Cucel said that once the business park was built, it would be self-sustaining. But building it depended on a mix of private businesses and Federal, State and Local Governments donating the land and $38m in funding. That is where Cucel hopes the high profile Pilbara Pulse summit helps. Attended by members of all levels of Australian government as well as leading academics and business consultants, Cucel hopes to drum up more support for the project. “We would always like these things to progress quicker than what they are so certainly it is an opportunity … to keep it in the forefront of people’s minds and the importance of it,” Cucel said.

Q: My husband is keen to purchase an investment property, but we were burned a couple of years ago in the Global Financial Crisis, and I am not convinced now is a good time to invest. Is there any advice or guidance you can give us? Wendy, Nickol West A: I understand your hesitancy and much was learned from the last GFC. Outlined below are 10 simple but important pieces of advice I provide to our clients. If you always keep these points in mind, no matter what market you invest in, you are giving yourself the best possible opportunity for success: 1.

Don’t panic – keep your

focus on the longer term to avoid knee jerk decisions. 2. Be proactive – to “wait and see” can cost you money, whereas flat markets provide opportunities so don’t hesitate for too long or you might miss out. 3. Don’t speculate – do your research and due diligence and make sure you base your decisions on your circumstances and the merit of the property. 4. Always have a financial buffer – cash flow is vital in any market. 5. Expect the unexpected – always have property insurance, which provides you with comprehensive protection.

6. Timing isn’t everything – it’s not when you buy, but what you buy. 7. Always look after your tenants 8. Never rely on old data – 12-months is a long time in property, so always base your decisions on the most current information available. 9. Always give yourself time – when buying, building, securing finance, finding tenants or selling. Don’t rush or put yourself under pressure. Take your time and do it right. 10. Don’t be negative – the future is always uncertain so as long as you stick to the fundamentals, property investment has the

Gastro warning for Pilbara Public health officials in the Pilbara have warned people to guard against contracting gastroenteritis following the recent admission of 13 babies and young children to the Hedland Health Campus. Nine of the hospitalised children have been confirmed as having rotavirus infection, and other cases have been confirmed in the community. Pilbara Public Health Physician Dr Heather Lyttle said that rotavirus is a common cause of gastroenteritis in babies and young children in Australia. “There has been an increase in rotavirus notifications in the Kimberley and the Northern Territory over recent weeks, so it appears the virus has now moved to the Pilbara,” Dr Lyttle said. “This current outbreak may last for several weeks” While the infection affects babies and young children more seriously, their siblings and parents can also catch the virus. “The symptoms of rotavirus are usually a fever and vomiting and then abdominal pains and a watery diahorrea,” Dr Lyttle said. “The symptoms can range from very mild to severe and last from two to six days.” Dr Lyttle said that if parents have a child with these symptoms they should take the following advice:

The virus can be shed in the faeces for up to a week or more after the symptoms cease. • Ensure that the sick child and other household members are very careful with their handwashing after going to the toilet and before eating food. • Ensure that all surfaces that may be contaminated around the toilet and bathroom are cleaned regularly. • If babies are in the household wash hands after changing nappies, ensure that nappy changing areas are kept clean and that babies’ hands and toys are cleaned regularly. Northern Quoll By Rose Best

Northern Quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus), also known as the Northern Native Cat, is a carnivorous marsupial mammal native to Australia. The Northern Quoll is a member of the family Dasyuridae and is often said to be the most Australian quoll. It was first described in 1842 by naturalist and author John Gould, who gave it the species name hallucatus, which indicates that it has a notable first digit. There are no recognised subspecies. The Northern Quoll is the smallest of the four Australian quoll species. Females are smaller than males with adult females weighing between 350-690g and adult males 540-1120g.

9

A remarkable feature of this species is that the males show complete die-off after mating, leaving the females to raise the young alone. Northern Quolls feed primarily on invertebrates but also consume fleshy fruit and a wide range of vertebrates including small mammals, birds, lizards, snakes and frogs. They also scavenge on road-kills, around campsites and in garbage tins. The Northern Quoll occurs from the Pilbara region of Western Australia across the Northern Territory to South East Queensland. Their historical range extended

uninterrupted from South East Queensland to the Kimberley in Western Australia. The Northern Quoll has recently been listed as Endangered under Australian Commonwealth legislation (EPBC Act), although it is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN. The current major threat to the Northern Quoll is the spread of cane toads, which were originally introduced in Queensland, but have now reached Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory and are nearly in Darwin. In two Kakadu study sites, quolls have become extinct at one site and declined from 45 individuals to five at the other site.

The unconfirmed conclusion to be drawn from this is that the Northern Quoll will cease to exist in most areas in the Top End of the Northern Territory once the toad population completely overlaps the Northern Quolls range. There are remnant populations of Northern Quolls still persisting in Queensland where toads have been present for many years. Scientists do not yet understand the mechanism for their persistence. To help protect northern quolls against cane toads a University of Sydney project is teaching them to avoid eating the invasive amphibians through taste aversion.

Each dad was presented with a special hand painted T-shirt, Father’s Day card and quirky questionnaire they had earlier prepared with the teachers. The children and dads also took part in class activities, silly races and singing and dancing on the day to ensure a fabulous time was had by all.

Onslow Bashers raise thousands for kids By Tamara Binamat Onslow Variety Bashers have returned home after an epic 25th Anniversary Variety WA Bash through Western Australia. Kicking off from Exmouth on Saturday August 24 the Bash travelled over 2,600km before finishing in Perth on Saturday August 31. Along the way the Variety Bashers presented much-needed grants to help WA kids in need. Bruce and Tracey Strahan and Nat Barwick made up team MASH from Onslow and the local trio raised an incredible $50,000 for Variety WA, the second highest fundraisers for Variety WA 2013. “It was a lot of work but for a great cause,” Bruse said. “We had some wonderful helpers in Onslow and to raise above $50,000 was incredible.” All 150 participants in the bash stopped in Onslow Sunday August 25 for dinner at Onlsow Sports Club.

It’s bump and grind time By Tamara Binamat This weekend women from all around Karratha will be shimmying, shaking and dancing behind the huge wooden door of the 100-year-old Spiegeltent. The world-famous Spiegeltent (Dutch for ‘mirror tent’) is erected pride of place at the Red Earth Arts Festival Village in Karratha for the next three weeks. The tent will be the site for everything flirty and a little naughty, with Bump and Grind workshops, Late Night Treats, Silent Discos and the Sugar Blue Vaudeville Revue. ‘Clara Cupcakes’, one of the founding

members of Sugar Blue Burlesque dance company, will be one of the stars of the show and says burlesque has exploded in recent times. A hula-hooping extraordinaire, Clara has been burlesque dancing since 2007, and the cheeky, flirty flapper has performed in over 100 shows with Sugar Blue Burlesque, taught countless students the art of hula hooping, won both national and International titles and has starred in various burlesque festivals around the world, including the prestigious New York Burlesque Festival. She’s even had a nod of approval from Mabel Lee, a famous 1940s burlesque and jazz dancer after a performance in Sweden “[Mabel Lee] is very eccentric and is notorious for not giving

compliments to people, she’s very critical and a wonderful performer,” Clara said. “I did a performance and she was there and she told me I was a good dancer – that was pretty exciting!” A handful of the Sugar Blue troupe will take over Spiegeltent during the revue, where Clara will be showcasing a 1920s and vaudeville-style performance. “Hopefully the audience will like it, there’s a lot of variety,” Clara said. “There’s a lot of double entendre and it’s cheeky and naughty. “[Burlesque is] so much more than Dita Von Teese – it’s funny, it’s silly, it’s smart and it’s a lot of fun.” For more about REAF, visit www.reaf.com.au.

By Tamara Binamat The Coral Bay community celebrated their unique marine life on Friday August 16 with a black tie fundraiser ball to support manta rays. Organisers of the Manta Ray Ball said the event was a huge success, raising $16,000 for Project AWARE. Event organizer Diana Belton said Coral Bay survives on eco-tourism and manta ray tours contribute approximately $1.8m to the local economy every year. “In Coral Bay we are fortunate to have a strong population of coastal manta rays that we can go out and swim with on a daily basis,” she said. “Manta rays do not have to be used for the gill market to feed one’s family, they can be enjoyed for their beauty and grace during a snorkel in the bay.” Dressed in their black tie frocks and suits guests enjoy a night of media productions, entertainment, food and some competitive bidding at the silent auction table. Exmouth band Cape Collective kicked off the event with live music. “The Ningaloo reef is full of wonders and wonderful people,” Diana said. “Thank you Coral Bay and Exmouth for your amazing support.”

Top comedy duo set for REAF

By Tamara Binamat A u s t r a l i a n comedian and actor Peter Helliar is taking the nation by storm, and although he normally frees up the month of September for footy finals, he will be headlining a comedy act with Claire Hooper during the Red Earth Arts Festival. The Rove Live star is now a writer, director, producer and actor for ABC TV’s It’s a Date as well as working stand up comedy, touring to sold out houses in Australia and New Zealand and hosting his own radio shows. One of Australia’s funniest comedians, Helliar is performing in Wickham and Karratha next weekend, and he said he always knew professional comedy was something he wanted to do.

“At school most of my jokes were met with laughter so I kind of had an idea I could make people laugh,” he said. “I thought that would be a really cool thing to do [for a living]. “When I was 21 I got the balls to get up on stage and give [stand up comedy] a crack.” Helliar said observing life around him will provide content for his acts and he will be keeping his ears and eyes open around town. “And whenever there’s an election on, comedy seems to be one of the big winners,” he said. “No matter what the result, people will be looking for a laugh.” And it seems Helliar is as excited as REAF-goers to be attending the Village. “I’m really looking forward to coming, it sounds like a really cool festival,” he said. “It’s always good to do the regional areas that aren’t on the normal comedy circuit. “I’m really looking forward to coming and playing.”

Social set turn out for body competition The International Natural Bodybuilding Association held its inaugural North West Titles competition at the Tambrey Tavern last Saturday August 31 where hundreds of spectators turned out to support the growing sport. The crowd came from all over Australia to support their friends and gym-buddies and the local community soaked it up with a long night of judging bodies and socialising.

Nutrition by April Butt

aprilbnutrition@gmail.com 0406 490 614

Today’s topic: Men’s Health September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to focus on ways to improve health for men of all ages. Prostate cancer is unfortunately not a commonly talked about topic, yet the statistics for Australia are truly frightening. One in nine men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. This means that each day 32 men learn they have prostate cancer and each year 3,300 men die of the disease, which exceeds the number of women who die each year from breast cancer. I believe these figures are so high because males typically don’t discuss or seek out help for health issues as openly as women do. I encourage all males to pay closer attention to all areas of their health, not just prostate health. And if something within your body is not behaving the way it used to, please discuss it or seek advice from a doctor or alternative health care provider before it becomes critical. Health is in your hands, and prevention is always better than a cure so here are a few easy tips to incorporate into your life to keep the male machine running the

way you like it. 1. Standing room only: A recent study on 63,000 Australian males concluded that those who sat for longer than four hours per day were more likely to develop chronic diseases such as, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and blood pressure. For those sitting for six hours the risk increased further. If you have a desk job aim to stand up and walk around every hour, fill up your water glass, stroll around the office – do whatever you need to do. Remember, exercising at the end of the day does not make up for long periods of sitting throughout the day. 2. Oysters please: Zinc is a nutrient found in oysters, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, beans, cashews, cacao and meat (in moderation). Zinc is an antioxidant and is also involved in producing DNA and repairing cells, this is specifically beneficial for healthy sperm production as well as preventing prostate cancer. 3. Eat your greens: Vegetables from the cruciferous family, such as broccoli, brussells sprouts, cabbage, kale and also cauliflower, contain potent phytochemicals called isothiocynates. These compounds have a protective role for the male reproductive health.

4. Meatless Mondays: Oxford University researchers have found that high meat and dairy consumption increases your risk for prostate cancer by up to 40 per cent. Aim for one vegetarian day per week, and experiment with different plant proteins for other main meals. These include foods, such as beans, chickpeas, lentils, tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds and grains.

5. Reduce acidity: The route of all chronic disease is inflammation and certain foods and beverages promote inflammation within the body. For a healthy life filled with vitality, minimise or avoid completely processed sugar, alcohol, deep fried foods, chargrilled meat and caffeine. Stress and anger are also inflammatory and take a huge toll on health and wellbeing, find outlets such as exercise to unload each day.

Having a baby can be one of the most exciting and challenging things you will ever do. Some experiences will fill you with joy, happiness and delight, and at other times you may feel stressed, frustrated, overwhelmed and confused. It is important to keep in check your emotional health throughout this journey. According to the national depression initiative beyondblue, Post Natal Depression is quite common and affects up to one in seven Mothers. Mums and dads with a new baby are being encouraged to talk more openly about mental and emotional wellbeing. Emotional health is always important, but even more so during early parenthood when

Beat stress/anxiety, lose weight, quit smoking or so much more.

Feedback from Mums who have been attending this playgroup has been really positive with families enjoying the opportunity to meet other people who understand what they are going through as well as being able to make new friends. This playgroup is funded by the Federal Government’s Communities for Children program and operates at Karratha Community House on Thursdays from 11.00am – 1.00pm. Glory 1 were too strong for Nickol 3 in the penultimate round of the Karratha District Junior Soccer 13s competition last weekend at Dampier as they ran out comfortable winners by seven goals to one. In the other morning game, Nickol 2 played a good passingstyle of soccer to defeat the top of the table Nickol 1 by the narrowest of margins. Well done to both teams for playing a highly entertaining game. In the afternoon game at Dampier, in what was another upset result, Salt proved too strong for Dampier, taking the match 3–1. Well played by the Salt team. In Saturdays 17s match, the Red Dogs ran out comfortable winners over Nickol by 5-nil. This weekend is the last regular season round of games before the finals series starts. While the top three teams in the 13s competition have been decided, the fourth place in the

13s is still up for grabs. In a quirk of the fixtures in both the 13s and 17s competitions, next week will see the grand final teams play each other in both age groups. These two matches will decide which team finishes top of the ladder in the respective age groups, so good luck to all teams. The finals of the 13s and 17s competitions will be played on Saturday September 14 at Pegs Creek Oval. The games will kick off at 3pm with the 13s team that finishes third at the end of the season playing the fourth placed team, before the top two teams on the 13s ladder playoff at 4:30pm for the title. At 6:30pm, the 17s teams take to the field in a clash between the first and second placed sides. The results and best players for this weekend were: 13s: Glory 1, 7 d Nickol 3, 1: Glory 1: James Baguley, Nic Middleton; Nickol 3; Fionn Neeson, Brodie Newman. Spring is upon us and the days are warming up as we head toward summer. The caravan parks are starting to show more grassed areas as many of the long term winter locals head back south. Reports coming into our store are that the fishing has been improving along with the good tides. Boating anglers have had the pleasure of good weather, but the massive swell has tested stomachs on the lumpy ocean. Mackerel have been thick in areas around Helby Bank, with most anglers reporting hook-ups using deep diving lures. The sharks have been concerning, with quite a few showing up in all areas. The billfish have continued to be in high numbers with all sports charter boats reporting captures daily. Daniel Thompson and his brother Richard are here on a fishing venture from Sydney. The two brothers have been combing the

shoreline in search of fish on light spin gear. They have been using small lures and soft plastics and had most success in the areas south around Pilgramunna. Species encountered include banded trevally, queenfish, golden trevally, dart, cod, spangled emperor and bonefish. Another angler fishing from the shore this week was Steve Vitale. Steve was fishing off Janz access at night on a light outfit of a Stradic reel and Loomis rod using dead hardy head fish. He hooked a fish that took a screaming run and after an energetic tussle, he

finally landed the fish. Much to his (and our) surprise, it was a bonefish! Bonefish are not usually known to take dead baits like this, but occasionally they have been caught on squid, metals and they do often get caught on soft plastics. Don’t forget that this weekend is the Ultra Light competition at the Exmouth Game Fishing Club. This event has a high junior participation and takes a lot of patience and skill from dedicated anglers. Anyone is welcome to come down to the EGFC clubhouse on the Saturday and Sunday to see what has been caught.

Mountain bikers in close Father’s Day finishes

By Gavin Smith The Round 6 Father’s Day mountain bike championship race drew 54 starters last weekend to battle it out on a challenging 4.7km course. As has been the case all season in the 2013 Scott Cycles Burrup Mountain Bike Club Championship Series, it was an impressive turn out across all divisions. This included a starting line up of eight Juniors, 17 Sport, six Ladies, 12 Expert and eight riders in the Elite category. With seven out of 10 races now completed, we are well into the business end of the season and grabbing those extra points really counts. This week’s course made its way from Hidden valley to the Horizon Power plant and linked together technical segments that have featured separately in earlier races. The race set off at a cracking pace but unfortunately during the first lap a rider took a fall. At this point, we saw the true spirit of the Karratha mountain biking community with a number of riders going to the aid of the fallen rider and potentially forfeiting valuable season points. Special thanks go to Nick Muller, Reece Greenem, Neil Streatfield, Matt Power, Amanda Rintoul, Gavin Smith, Adrian

Richie (56:50:00) finally edged Mark (57:16:00) out for the win, with Toby (59:20:00) picking up third place. Early on in the Expert division, it looked like it was going to be a two man race between Jim Mcleod and Mitch Ewin, who posted good first lap times. However, Simon Blyth (49:25:00) found his legs and posted a couple of Elite-worthy laps to grab first place just ahead in front of Mitch Ewin (50:22:00) and Jim Mcleod (52:20:00) in third place. Amanda Ewin had a convincing win in the Ladies division taking the win in 33.56, almost three minutes ahead of second placed Anna Wood (36.34), who is back racing after returning from downhill • Corey Davis and Macie and Dylan Bennetts at the World Championships mountain biking in France. Third place Carly Doyle rode a very consistent race finishing in 37.09. The riders in the Sport category posted impressive times also, prompting the call for a few of the chaps to step up to Expert for next season. Port Hedland win third consecutive footy premiership By Ben Leahy The Port Hedland Rovers have capped off a dominant season in the North Pilbara Football League with both the senior and reserves teams winning their grand finals on Saturday August 31. In the seniors, the Rovers survived a late scare from the Wickham Wolves to run out 22-point victors and secure their third premiership in a row. After breaking even in the first quarter, the Rovers controlled much of the day’s play to take a 14-point lead into the last change. However, with minor premiers Wickham bursting out of the blocks in the final term to snatch the lead eight-minutes in, the Rovers responded like a premiership team as they slowed down play before regaining the momentum. They eventually ran out comfortable winners 11.12 (78) to 7.14 (56). The Rovers’ Jesse Simpson was awarded the medal for best on ground, while teammates Harry Borch and Adam Waight also played well for the home team. Port Hedland’s reserves team also came from behind in the last quarter to snatch their second premiership in three years. The Rovers turned a 10-point deficit to the Karratha Falcons reserve at the three quarter break into a 26-point victory with the scoreboard reading 11.7 (73) to 7.5 (47). Best on ground Tristan Myers led the Rovers revival as he booted three final term goals, while full forward Aaron Ogg kicked six for the match.

Roosters 2013 champs By Ben Leahy The Karratha Roosters have defeated the Port Hedland Hawks in a tight finale to the 2013 Pilbara Rugby League season on Saturday August 31. Played under lights on Karratha’s Millars Well Oval, the Roosters emerged 28-20 victors over the visiting Hedland Hawks in a game that was still up for grabs with 10-minutes left on the clock. With much of the second half deadlocked at 20-20, the Roosters were eventually able to

gain a small lead with a penalty conversion before putting the game beyond doubt with a final try minutes before the siren. Roosters prop Hemi Wawiri was named the Man of the Match. Before the men took to the field, the Ladies also played their final match in a best of three series with the South Hedland Cougars winning on the day, but the Karratha Storm winning the series twogames-to-one. The Cougar’s Saane Finau was named Man of the Match. Port Hedland’s

only silverware on the day came from the U16s boys as their Cyclones team ran out comfortable winners over the Karratha Storm 26-8, with the Cyclones’ William Finau named Man of the Match. Earlier in the day, juniors in the U6, U8 and U12 competitions also took to the field in what was a huge day for rugby league in the region. With games running from the first junior match at 10am to the seniors kick-off at 7:30pm, NRL game development officer Chris Newman said league was growing fast in the region. “With a 56 per cent increase of players this year, Pilbara Rugby League is certainly at its strongest point and will continue to get stronger in years to come,” Chris said. Chris also congratulated Tom Keefe on being named the 2013 Volunteer of the Year.
