Robbers glass festival-goers during crime spree By Tamara Binamat Police are calling for any witnesses to come forward after multiple incidents of aggravated burglary occurred outside the North West Festival last Saturday August 24. South Hedland Police said two men have been charged with a plethora of offences including aggravated armed robbery, assault police officer, unlawful wounding and aggravated armed assault with intent to rob. On Saturday August 24 about 10:30pm

the two offenders from Perth were outside the North West Festival site in Port Hedland, where they struck a 26-year-old man over the face with a glass bottle after demanding money. The man relented his wallet and was assaulted again. The attack left the victim with wounds to his face. Police were notified and two 26-yearold men, Mr Dixon and Mr Kennedy, were located a short distance away and taken into custody. During the arrest a female police officer from South Hedland Police Station was assaulted by Dixon. She was punched in the chest and jaw. No medical attention was By Senior Constable Newby required.

The other offender also received an assault police officer charge after Kennedy spat on a police officer while in lock up. While at hospital interviewing the original complainant, police were notified of other patients who had been assaulted with a glass bottle earlier that day. Police are conducting inquiries into those offences, and they believe the same two men were responsible for the attacks. “Certainly they were out on a crime spree with intent to get money,” said Port Hedland Police Station’s officer in charge. “They hadn’t been into the event, they weren’t part of it, they just [went to the area] with the purpose of committing offences.” Any witnesses are urged to contact police on 131 444.

Karratha Police are reminding the public of the importance of having a secure load. Karratha Traffic have attended many incidents where an item has fallen off a vehicle and flown in the path of oncoming vehicles. The reports we receive range from litter falling out of utes and trucks to other larger items becoming loose and falling onto the road. These reports include private vehicles, work vehicles and trucks. All loads are to be secured and the driver is solely responsible for the load at all times. Sand should be wet down thoroughly and if the trip is a significant distance and the sand is likely to dry out then a tarp should be used to cover the load. When travelling on long trips heavy vehicle operators should be advised to stop and check loads to ensure they remain secure. If a heavy vehicle operator has not loaded a trailer, the driver still assumes sole responsibility once they connect it to their prime mover. Anything on a vehicle that is not anchored down in some way is considered insecure. The penalty for having an insecure load is a Traffic Infringement Notice with a fine of $400.

Grey nomads to bypass North We are on our third trip around the block, in a fully self-contained RV with a toilet, hot shower, a washing machine and power supply systems. We frankly do not need a caravan park. Once again we have totally bypassed Broome and the entire Shire of Roebourne for a third time. We have noted that for the entire length of the Great Northern Highway through the Shire of Roebourne there is no rest area with a 24-hour stay option. There are lots of signs though, demanding drivers rest if tired. We feel for your regional businesses because for every vehicle booking in a caravan park, we’d say five to ten others are totally passing you by.
Your domestic tourism market is performing poorly. The caravan and RV have changed, with many now totally self-sufficient. Many states have recognised the evolution of caravans and RVs and are becoming RV-friendly towns, providing town free-stops for up to 48 hours. In many regions caravan parks are closing, while drive-through RV parks are opening. As soon as we enter a town and signage states no camping or caravan parks only, we leave the region. Innovative design to save on Pilbara power costs By Ben Leahy Pilbara residents might be soon able to put more renewable electricity back into the grid once the winner of a Government-funded Renewable Energy Challenge is announced in Perth on September 3. The challenge called on private designers to invent an affordable system that allowed residential homes and smallscale businesses to regulate the release excess energy from sources, such as solar panels, back into the grid. The winning design to be announced this week will win $50,000 and is expected to be close to market-ready and cheap enough for most Pilbara residents to afford. Pilbara electricity providers Horizon Power said the Department of Commercefunded challenge provides a solution to an important problem in the region. While Horizon Power currently offers a buyback scheme for excess renewable energy generated by household solar panels, it cannot offer the service to everyone living in the Pilbara. This is because current household solar panel systems can trigger unplanned outages at Horizon’s plants. This can happen when, on bright sunny days, Horizon buys back excess renewable energy generated by households. This requires the local power station to do less work to meet the electricity demand, and it may mean that one

or more of the station’s engines stop operating. However, if a cloud covers the sun and the solar panels suddenly feed less electricity back into the system, it can lead to a sharp demand on the station, which it might not be able to meet. To avoid this situation, Horizon Power is seeking to have all households install generator management systems alongside their solar panels. These typically work by using a battery to store a household’s excess renewable energy. This allows the generation management device to continue feeding electricity into the system in the event a cloud covers the sun and give the power station time to adjust to the increased demand. And that is where the Renewable Energy Challenge comes in, Horizon said. Up until now generator management systems have been too expensive for regular households to purchase. But with the winning entry in the challenge expected to provide a costeffective solution, Horizon said it will be able to soon offer its electricity buyback scheme to more customers in the Pilbara and eventually across the state. The government-owned power provider said this will enable it to save money on the fuel it uses to generate electricity and save its customers money as it buys back more renewable energy.

Hoon charged for dangerous driving
By Tamara Binamat All police districts in the Pilbara conducted highway patrols as part of Operation Cobia last Friday August 23, and the results have prompted a warning from police to potential speeders. “It’s disappointing to see so many people are exceeding the posted speed limit,” Acting Sergeant Dan Major at the Pilbara Traffic Office said. “[Patrols are] a regular thing that we do so there should be no surprises to see us out there. “Expect to see more of us.” Over the course of Operation Cobia 128 vehicles were stopped and 71 drivers were issued with speeding infringements. Three vehicles were impounded as a result of drivers not having a valid licence
and a further 30 drivers were issued with other traffic-related incidents. The day following Operation Cobia a Port Hedland resident had his car impounded and was charged with hoon offences after driving 109kph in a 60kph zone. Last Saturday August 24 Pilbara Traffic Police were conducting patrols on the North West Coastal Highway Port Hedland when at about 3:40pm the green Holden Commodore utility was detected speeding 49kph over the speed limit through a roadworks area. Workers were present and the construction site was active. Police stopped the 33year-old driver who subsequently had his vehicle impounded for 38 days. The offender was charged with reckless driving.

‘One day all of Australia will know my name’ By Tamara Binamat She’s one of our nation’s most inspiring, strong and beautiful Indigenous women, so it’s fitting that she will be the guest speaker at this year’s Strong Beautiful Women’s Gathering in Roebourne next month. Gail Mabo is the daughter of celebrated lands right activist Eddie Mabo, and 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions by Eddie Mabo. Just 20 years ago, the high court announced its historic decision to overturn the legal doctrine of ‘terra nullius’, which translates to “land belonging to no one”. That decision is now commonly known as “Mabo” in Australia and is recognised for its landmark status. “When I heard the high court’s decision that dad had won the case, I was sitting in the car, and I thought, ‘oh my god my dad’s won’, and I started to cry,” Ms Mabo remembers. “For me it was sad because I wish he was around. “He gave his life to [the case]. “It was happy, but also sad.” Ms Mabo said her father wanted all Indigenous people to be entitled to land. A significant moment for Ms Mabo in this realisation was as a 15-year-old. Mr Mabo was a couple of years into the case when she walked into a room at home and witnessed her father painting a selfportrait. The painting depicted Mr Mabo with golden eyes and red highlights in his hair. “I said, ‘hey dad you don’t have golden
eyes, this is very radical’,” Ms Mabo said. “And he said, ‘but my girl, this is what I want to have. One day all of Australia will know my name’. “And the day the verdict came down, I said ‘yes dad, everyone knows your name now’.” All these years later this family history inspires Ms Mabo’s work as a successful artist. She said the memories of her father are alive in her artwork. Recently Ms Mabo was a finalist in the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, which she says was an empowering moment. And Ms Mabo said speaking at the Strong Beautiful Women’s Gathering is important because she strongly believes in women networking to encourage self-esteem among each other. “For me it’s empowering our own because as women, we are the voice of our future and we have to stand up and take control,” she said. “We are the ones who will push for change to happen. “Women doubt themselves, but within ourselves we have our own strength. “We can find it, we can learn it and we can hone it and make it our own. “As women we have to remember that we are strong. “The men might not like it, but at the end of the day we give birth to them. “And giving life, that’s a miracle. “If anything, lets get up and all move forward together.”

Perth businessman applies to mine heritage-listed Burrup site By Ben Leahy A Perth businessman is hoping to mine an area of land on the Burrup Peninsula that contains thousands of rock-art motifs and memorials to the Flying Foam Massacre. Leon Kurt Mauritz the director of Burrup Materials has applied for one mining and three prospecting leases on the national heritage-listed site. He hopes to mine rock on the leases for use as construction material in the Dampier Marina and a possible cyclone break wall for the Dampier Port Authority. Mauritz said the ability to quarry rock on the Burrup Peninsula and then barge it to the Marina site instead of sourcing it inland and transporting it by trucks had the potential to save millions of dollars. “[State-government body LandCorp] had a budget allocation at the time of $100m to source rock to build the break wall,” Mauritz said. “They went to the market and got budget pricing … and I’ve been led to believe that the pricing came back double what they allowed for.” But while Mauritz’s application could have an effect on the Dampier Marina development, it could also prove important as a test case for the State Government’s intentions for the Burrup Peninsula. The Dampier Archipelago contains the largest concentration of rock art in the world, estimated by some to be as many as one million engravings. Traditional Owners, like Wong-GooTt-Oo elder Wilfred Hicks, hope to see the entire area World Heritage listed. Hoewever, while 44 per cent of the Burrup Peninsula is now protected as part of the Murujuga National Park, other areas containing rock art are still zoned for future industrial development. Burrup Materials director Mauritz, who has experience working on drilling and blasting projects through his company Northrock, has applied for leases in this area and said the project would have win-win outcomes for business and Indigenous heritage. He said the Burrup Peninsula was the most suitable quarry site along the nearby coastline from which he could barge rock to the Dampier Marina. “I’ve looked between Cape Preston
and Port Hedland and there is not another [site],” Mauritz said. The Burrup Peninsula also has the advantage of being close to existing port and road infrastructure. Mauritz said his proposal had also attracted the interest of the Dampier Port Authority. He said the Port Authority had expressed an interest in using rocks from the site to build a break wall to protect shipping in the event of a cyclone. Mauritz also envisioned leveling part of the area once he is finished mining to provide usable land for the Dampier Port to expand on. Yet, Mauritz also stressed that his application to the Department of Mines and Petroleum was just the first step in a lengthy review process in which all stakeholders would be consulted. He said if his applications were successful, he planned to leave many of the rock sites undisturbed but would apply to relocate some of the rock art to a central location where he intended to build a museum. He said the building would act as a tourist hub and help protect engravings from the elements and provide security from vandalism and theft. However, Greens MP Robin Chapple condemned the applications and said the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation and its board of directors comprised of Traditional Elders was already working on plans for tourist infrastructure. “The idea of putting rock art in a building flies against everything that has ever been said at a Federal or State level or indeed by the local Indigenous people,” Chapple said. He said the idea of moving rock art had also already been roundly condemned by Indigenous people and heritage experts around the world during the construction of Woodside’s nearby Pluto plant. The lease areas contain more than 4,000 ancient motifs and a large number of standing stones, according to a 2008 archaeological study. Memorials to the 1868 Flying
Foam Massacre of Aboriginal people are also located on the site. “I am dead against relocating rocks, I think it has got to stop,” said WongGoo-Tt-Oo elder Wilfred Hicks, who’s people were involved in the massacre. He said carvings on the Burrup contain Aboriginal law and were the equivalent of the Bible for Indigenous people. “It is moving our rocks and breaking our Bible,” he said. The Department of Mines and Petroleum said it is currently assessing the application by Burrup Materials and that it would not approve any plans that damaged or destroyed rock art. Burrup Materials director Mauritz said he would be happy to meet with Indigenous people to discuss his plans.

The tour included a brief overview of Rio Tinto mines and the transportation of ore, as well as viewing the trains and active level crossings in operation. The students then visited Rio Tinto’s 7 Mile rail operations and had the chance to board and see the inner workings of the locomotive and the Rolling Stock Maintenance workshop. Lastly, the students visited the Dampier ports where they observed the ore being dumped at Parker Point. The students and teachers were all impressed by the sheer size of the operation. “The tour was a great success and it’s a credit to all involved,” said Mr Hart. “I would personally like to thank those

Pilbara’s material girl By Ben Leahy It might be one small step on a catwalk, but for Karratha student and aspiring model Lisa-Marie Rodd it will be a giant leap. The Karratha High School student next month flies to the US to walk the runway for prominent Australian designer Ruth Tarvydas at New York Fashion Week. New to modelling, Lisa-Marie won last year’s amateur Pilbara Girl beauty pageant in which local girls participate in confidence boosting public speaking and modelling programs and has only taken the occasional fashion job since. So the transition from the Pilbara’s red dirt runways to modelling in front of more than 400 celebrities at the Altman Building in one of the world’s most important fashion shows is likely to be an exciting and daunting challenge. But she said the trip organised by community groups Roebourne Girls FX Academy and the Luke Adams Foundation was deliberately designed to broaden her horizons. “This is the first time I have travelled overseas and I am excited to be going to New York and participating in Fashion Week,” Lisa-Marie said. “[But] I am also hoping to develop my leadership skills further so that I can be a role model for other girls in the community when I come home.” Lisa-Marie’s New York trip will be the second time girls from the Roebourne FX Academy have visited the Big Apple. The academy uses fun artistic pursuits, such as song, dance, drama and modelling, as a way to address issues within the local community such as self-esteem, sexual and women’s health, drug and alcohol abuse, healthy lifestyles and future direction. That means Lisa-Marie will also meet with school students in Brooklyn and the Bronx as part of a cultural exchange. “I am looking forward to meeting other students my own age and seeing how different their lives are to mine in the Pilbara,” she said.
Brendan Parker from the Luke Adams Foundation said the idea of the nine-day trip was to show Lisa-Marie the wider world in the hope she will gain inspiration and come back and share that experience with local girls. And with Lisa-Marie to also do a photo shoot in New York for the SKYE and Staghorn brands before coming back and participating in the Perth Fashion Festival, so much the better if the trip helped launch her career. “From our point of view it is about providing opportunities to young people like her, and if she can grab that and run with it that is brilliant,” Brendan said. “There is nothing wrong with these girls going away to chase their dreams as long as they retain that connection to their local community and come back and share what they have learned and inspire other kids.” Lisa-Marie will walk the runways in New York on September 7 and in Perth on September 14. She will also return to the Pilbara with designer Ruth Tarvydas and leading Indigenous model Samantha Harris on September 16-17.

Archipelago Arts were the big winners at the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Excellence Awards held at the Tambrey Tavern on August 24. The arts consultancy was named Business of the Year for the second year in a row as more than 200 leading business figures were entertained at the black-tie event headlined by band Parker Avenue. Other award winners on the night included local businesses Cherratta Lodge, Karratha Soggidog, Crawford Realty, Westtug Management, REFAP and Wrapped Creations. Among community groups, the Roebourne Visitor’s Centre, Karratha Community House, Wickham Community Association and SAFE picked up awards. Yet it was Archipelago Arts who took centre stage as they also won the Best Micro Business and the Industry Development and Innovation awards. Founder Colette McEntee said she started Archipelago Arts in 2009 at a time when there was little focus on the arts within the Pilbara. ‘[But now] there is a growing sense of momentum and confidence within our local arts community,� McEntee said. “Not much gives me greater pride than knowing I have created a business which allows my team to enjoy coming to work each day and that they know they are making a positive difference in a community they love.� From its humble beginnings in 2009, Archipelago Arts have also become one of the
poster businesses for economic diversification in the Pilbara’s resource driven economy. In the past year alone, the group have event managed the high profile Cossack Art Awards, coordinated the installation of public art in Karratha and Dampier and provided consultancy services for a new art awards in the East Pilbara. They also have a strong financial model at a time when many other small businesses are doing in tough in the Pilbara. Not only have the group roughly doubled their turnover in each of the past two financial years, but they have broadened their customer base, winning contracts from private organisations, Aboriginal corporations and the local, state and federal governments. According to acting director Jen Hourquebie, at the heart of the group’s success is its innovation and flexibility. “Art lends itself to innovation, there is a lot of creative ways of thinking and solutions and we’ve been lucky to work on some great projects with clients that have been keen to try new things,� Hourquebie said. “If someone came to us with something new that we maybe didn’t have that much experience, we would always try to take it on while following best practice principles for the arts and engaging with artists.� The group plan to build their brand throughout Western Australia in the future, but for the moment Hourquebie is excited by the continued growth in the Pilbara. “There is a really vibrant arts community scene and more and more people wanting to get involved and be creative, it is fun to see,� she said.

Libby Wyatt’s customers are not your typical customers. There are those like Cody, who sing with such joy when they get their hair washed that the whole neighbourhood hears them. Then there is Nackers, who shakes and shivers in dread at the thought of having a bath. Yet Cody and Nackers are just two among more than 200 quirky cats, dogs, birds, chickens, lizards and guinea pigs, which Libby washes and feeds as part of her mobile pet-washing and minding business called Karratha Soggidog. And all that cat scrubbing and pooch perfuming paid off on August 24 as Karratha Soggidog was awarded the Best Home Based Business at the town’s 2013 Business Excellence Awards. For Libby, it was added confirmation that she made the right decision to start a new business in 2004, which balanced her work and family lives. “That is why I started the business - so I could be home for my kids more,” Libby said. “I wanted something with flexibility so that I could pick my kids up from school if they were sick and be there at the end of the day to hear their stories.” Libby said that philosophy has guided her in every aspect of her new business since she left a highly-paid job at Rio Tinto as a laboratory scientist. She said Karratha Soggidog’s marketing was a good example. Rather than run expensive advertisement campaigns, Libby has maintained one small but consistent classified ad in the Pilbara Echo. “People might not see the ads every week, but when they decide to get their dog washed they know where to find my number,” Libby said. “As long as I do a good job and use top quality products and my dogs are left smelling beautifully clean, my customers find new business for me. “It happens when their friends or neighbours come over and pat the dog and go, ‘Wow your dog just smells amazing’.” As well as washing animals, Libby also helps eradicate ticks and feeds and walks pets when their owners are away – this past week, she even IN YOU MAY VOTE began looking after her first pig. Top cops raise thousands for legacy By Tamara Binamat Nearly 50 bicycle riders are back from the 800-kilometre trek to Broome to raise money for the Police Legacy charity. The annual Karratha to Broome bike ride is in its 20th year, and Karratha Police station has raised a staggering $90,000 in just the past three years. Inspector Ray Briggs from the Pilbara District office presented the $90,000 cheque to Sergeant Jill Willoughby, Manager of Police Legacy last week. Sergeant Willoughby said the funds will go directly to 368 police widows, two widowers and 48 children. “Events such as this help with the many needs of the Legacy Families,” she said. “Without the sponsorship and local community support, we would struggle to assist our police family.

2013 North West Fest cranks up the volume By Elise Batchelor The second ever North West Festival had music flying into people’s ears last Saturday August 24 with a crowd topping 3,500 rocking out at the Port Hedland Turf Club. The line-up of artists for the 12-hour event saw the headlining Paul Kelly strum out his finest after second-billed Bernard Fanning and Grinspoon. Before night fell, slick mover 360 gripped the audience with his energy as did Bluejuice lead singer Jake Stone. And there’s nothing like a bit of crowd surfing and stage climbing to keep the bouncers on their toes.
Earlier in the day, Broome band 42 Decibel kicked off the event, followed by Aussie singer Vance Joy, then Abbe May and New Zealand’s funky Black Seeds. Sunset Events managing director Dave Chitty was thrilled with the success of this second North West Festival, with numbers up 10 per cent from the inaugural 2012 event. “The people of Port Hedland have been great in supporting the North West Festival, and I’d like to thank them for once again giving us such a warm welcome,” Chitty said. He said the feedback from artists, attendees and pretty much everyone involved has been overwhelmingly
positive. “Needless to say, we are very much looking forward to commencing development on the 2014 event,” he said Town of Port Hedland mayor Kelly Howlett said that a festival such as this plays an important role in putting the transformed Port Hedland of today on the map. “The atmosphere was terrific and the performances first class,” Howlett said. First time festival-goer and former Hedland resident Caitlin Morgan said the day was amazing, and she couldn’t have imagined such an event taking place here before seeing this one herself.
“Port Hedland seems like a small community and the huge events always happen in Perth but not upstate,” Morgan said. “It was a great environment, everyone was having fun, lots of people, everyone was smiling.” She sent a message to those who didn’t get there this year. “You’ll have to go next year – it’s worth the money!” she said.

There might not have been a Spice Girl on the judging panel, but that didn’t dampen the excitement at the Millars’ Got Talent grand final on August 24. Having become one of Millars Well Primary’s most anticipated events, the annual talent competition gives students the chance to show off their performing arts skills in front of cheering schoolmates and photo-snapping parents. And for Year 5 students Claudia van Der Wel and Emma Brierley, the hours of after school practice paid off. Their jazz dance routine was voted the grand final’s best performance and earned them the Millars’ Got Talent 2013 crown. “We really wanted to take part because it could be our last year to do it, so we wanted to do something together,” Claudia said. And was it hard finding the inspiration for their act? “No, we wouldn’t do anything else but dance,” Claudia said, adding that both her and Emma are members of local dance companies. For Millars Well deputy principal Leah Clegg, Millars’ Got Talent is not just a big song and dance in the name of having fun. She believes its popularity among students has helped boost the profile of performing arts at the school and highlighted that it is an important area of learning. “Things like sports always get a big stage for performance, such as at sports carnivals,” Leah said. “But this is a great opportunity for kids who have talent in arts to also shine on a bigger stage.” And perhaps surprisingly, Millars Got Talent is not just producing artists, but also skilled administrators. The 2013 competition has been entirely organised and run by Millars Well Year 7 students Maddison Dunne and Kahayla Walsh, who are the school’s head prefect and community development prefect respectively. The role has required the girls to promote the competition at school assemblies and over the PA system and organise logistics, such as booking the sound equipment and setting audition and competition dates.

The duo’s hard work seems to be paying off, with the competition getting ever more popular among students. “I’ve noticed that each year everyone is like ‘When’s Millars’ Got Talent?, When are the next auditions?’, Kahayla said. “It gets them thinking and they start practicing way before we announce it.” And the students aren’t the only ones who look forward to the show. “The community comes and the parents bring their iPhones and cameras and take some snaps and often get a tear in their eye alongside me, I’m a big sook like that,” deputy principal Leah said.

Tigers, fish and handprints star at Tambrey for Book Week Vanstone announced
as new RFDS Chair
By Chelsea Elmer, Tambrey Primary School Kindy and Pre-Primary students combined during Book Week to participate in fun, engaging and hands-on literacy activities to celebrate our love of storytelling. We finished off the week with a dress up parade at assembly on Friday August 23. All students and teachers dressed up as their favourite book character following the Book Week theme “Read across the Universe”. In the classrooms students enjoyed activities such as Rainbow Fish where students read the story The Rainbow Fish and then worked in pairs to print a rainbow handprint in a fish bowl. In another classroom, with the use of story props, the students were told the story of The Tiger who loved to Sing. Students all had the opportunity to make tiger noses and re-enact the story.

St Paul’s Primary School colourful Book Week Parade By Sally Davies, St Paul’s Primary School The annual Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week was celebrated at St Paul’s Primary School last week with a very lively and happy Book Week parade. The theme this year was “Read Across the Universe” and students and teachers all dressed up and paraded to music that matched the space theme. There was a very enthusiastic audience of parents and friends that cheered everyone from the Kindy through to the Year 7 students as they shared their wonderful book character ideas with others. In the lead-up to Book Week, teachers encouraged students to think about their favourite books and it was wonderful to see so many different characters spring to life and take on a form of their own. During the rest of the week, in keeping with the “Read Across the Universe” theme, students enjoyed talks
from visiting pilots. After handling many questions the special visitors all made time to share one of the Australian Book Council’s shortlisted books with the students.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia recently announced Amanda Vanstone, Australia’s longest serving female Cabinet Minister since Federation, as the new Chair of the RFDS National Board. Greg Rochford, CEO of RFDS National, said Mrs Vanstone will guide the organisation as it meets the needs of regional populations and the surge in demand for services brought about by the mining boom. “While we face many of the same pressures as the rest of the health system, we also have the challenge of providing
health care to some of the remotest parts of Australia,” Mr Rochford said. “Demand for RFDS services is higher than ever, with a recorded 26 per cent growth in activity since 2006.” Mrs Vanstone said pilots, nurses, aircraft maintenance crews, doctors, administrative staff and board members are all working to ensure the farthest corners of Australia get the finest care. “It is a great privilege to join this dedicated team,” she said.

Dampier Green head into women’s softball finals full of confidence By Claire Moran The finals for the WPSO women’s softball season have been set with the last round of games taking place last weekend. Geckos took on league leaders Dampier Green in the first game of the day and started off strong with their batting line up. Narelle Walton (who filled in from Sinners) hit an incredible home run to push the Geckos around and score four runs. For the Geckos, Jess Pollock fielded a great game at third base as she took a couple of catches, but in the end Dampier proved too strong for them on the day. Not only was Jamie-Lee Paterson impressive in the batting box for Dampier, lining up a perfect bunt to make it to first safely, but she also pitched a very consistent game. This inspired Dampier to defeat the Geckos 25 to 5 and remain in number one spot on the ladder. The Orbits and Wickham took to the diamond next to play it out for third and fourth spot on the ladder with both guaranteed to make it into the preliminary finals. Tracey Smyth pitched a great
game for the Orbits and hit a beautiful three bag hit when she came up to the batting box. Her daughter Nadia Smyth also took a great catch in the outfield to keep the pressure on Wickham. With the pitches coming across so consistently from the Orbits, Wickham quickly found their stride and had the Orbits struggling to close them down. Michelle Ramea smashed a beautiful hit out into the depths of outfield and took it all the way home to score a homerun. Brooke Mews from Wickham had an impressive batting game, keeping the Orbits on their toes in outfield. The most impressive play of the game was when the ball was hit straight back to Wickham’s pitcher, Sharon Collins, who caught it but lost it out of her mitt, only for Teneille Dhu to dive in and catch it again before it hit the ground, making the out. Wickham defeated the Orbits 25 to 8. The final game of the day saw last year’s runners up the Storm take on Dampier White. For the third time on the day, with one coming in each game, there was a homerun hit, this
time by the Storm’s Jo Leo, who also had a remarkable game as catcher. True to form, Kyla Thomas pitched a nice steady game for the Storm getting two K2s on Dampier’s batters. Tonina Parsons fielded well for the Storm and Ali Richards, just getting back into softball after being out for a few seasons, and got bat to ball consistently to help the Storm defeat Dampier 23 to 5. At the end of the round, the ladder finished with Dampier Green on top, Storm second, Wickham third and Orbits forth. All four teams will be gearing up this Saturday August 31 to fight it out for their chance to play in this year’s grand final. Starting at 2:00pm, down at Bulgarra Oval, Wickham and the Orbits will face off again to see who gets a chance to play in the semi-final. The 4:00pm game will be Storm versus Dampier Green, with the winner advancing straight to the Grand Final being held on Saturday September 14. Come down and support your local teams as they fight it out in the finals of this year’s Women’s Softball Competition.

Dampier and Glory book grand final spots in 17s soccer By Greg Emms Its getting close to finals time in the Karratha District Junior Soccer 13s competition and the games are being ever more closely contested. A highlight from the Saturday August 24 round of matches was the top of the table clash in which Nickol 1 were able to record the narrowest of wins over Glory 2. The game ended one-nil in Nickol 1’s favour but congratulations to both teams on such a good game of soccer. In the other 13s clashes, Dampier proved too strong for Nickol 3 and Glory 1 held off a determined Salt. In Saturday’s 17s match, Glory ran out the winners over Nickol in what was a hard fought match that both teams contested right to the end. Once again, well played to both teams. With two rounds of the home and away season left, there are five teams that can make the 13s finals, so good luck to all of them over the coming weeks. In the 17s competition, the
grand finalists have already been decided with congratulations going to Dampier and Glory, who have booked their places in the September action. Black Belt mums kick on in Hedland Hedland has two new Black Belts after Relma Bule-Turner and Tamara Batalin-Lovell from the ATA Hedland Taekwondo Club recently passed their qualifications. Both women are getting a kick out life as they learn the ancient Korean martial art of Taekwondo. Tamara said she was still pinching herself and couldn’t believe she was now wearing a black belt.
Relma said she was equally excited: “It was like earning a degree from university – I am so excited and proud of myself.” Both women recently paired at the WA State Championships winning gold medals in the poomsae competition making them a dynamic duo. While not revealing their age, the duo said they hoped they set an example that encouraged more mums to come along to Taekwondo.
Both women took up the sport as mature students and they said this demonstrated that age is no barrier to becoming a Black Belt. Head instructor Tim Turner said Relma and Tam are worthy recipients and exceptional instructors, who will inspire other women and give confidence and courage to young girls. • U9s gear up for the 400m sprint
Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates Lochlann and Hamish Hogg were fishing in Exmouth recently after having purchased a couple of new rods and reels. Lochlann tried out his new Daiwa Demon Blood with a Saltist LH20, using a ‘toothy critter’ rig of wire and mulie floated astern off Helby Bank after launching from Tantabiddi. The first fish he landed was the mackerel pictured this week. His brother Hamish was using a Shimano Tyrnos 20 and Shimano T Curve rod and he landed the other mackerel pictured. The boys had a great day out with dad who even managed to get a good green jobfish as well. Are you likely to target black marlin soon? If you are you could help the University of Queensland as it works with Dr Julian Pepperell to compare the genetic ‘fingerprints’ of black marlin from Eastern and Western Australia. The research is aiming to determine if there are breeding populations on both sides of the continent and reveal if these fish move between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. For this project to be successful, they need around 50 fin clips to extract DNA from juvenile or sub-adult fish (up to
around 50kg) caught from both coasts. We believe this number of samples can be at tained in a very short time, given the fact that the small black marlin are the most prevalent species of billfish encountered by anglers in our waters. All that is needed is a small clipping from a pectoral or dorsal fin of a small black marlin, plus the details of the estimated size of fish, date of release, location and angler’s name. All fin clippings are being collected and retained at Tackle World Exmouth. There will be two lucky draws at the end of the season from all the samples, and the winners will receive a signed copy of Dr Julian Pepperel’s award-winning book, Fishes of the Open Ocean. For further details, please drop in to the store on Maley St. There has been a group of 36 anglers in Exmouth taking part in the Western Angler Celebrity Challenge. The guys have been having a great time both on and off the water. The famous cricketers, who are joining them for the fishing week are impressed with Exmouth and we think they may be back again very soon. Some anglers have also been walking the shoreline in search
of whiting, queenfish, trevally and anything inte resting this week. The shallow waters on the spring high tide can be quite productive in the gulf and what you get to see, with birds and fish and simply breathing in clean-fresh air, can be very rewarding. The sailfish have been firing lately and several boats have been getting multiple hook-ups as pods of sails converge on the lure spread of vessels trolling for billfish. When the sails are in big numbers, they become very competitive and hungry and it is extremely exciting to watch. They can be a bit tricky to hook up on lures though at times, as they seem to play with the lure and not actually stay connected. It is advisable to have a ‘drop-back’ bait ready on a reel to either cast (if using spin gear) or drop back behind the lure to tempt the hungry sail. A fine gauge circle hook is also recommended as it is easier to hook-up and stay connected to the fish. Plus the circle hook is better for release. The bait can be a garfish or poddy mullet with the hook free from the bait. For all rigging tips on these, call in to the store and ask the friendly staff at Tackle World.
• Emily Krueger throws a PB of 5.02m in the shot put Every round of competition is a big one in Karratha Little Athletics and this week was no exception as 80 competitors hit the track and more than 200 personal bests were broken. Five of the competitors also managed to break PBs in all five of their events. They were Harmony Leo, Shayden Richardson, Lucas Whitehouse, Adam Giltrow, who slashed nine seconds off his 400m run, and Zoe Patterson, who broke all her PBs for the second competition night in a row. In addition to these stars, a further 12 competitors notched up PBs in four out of five events. They were Jazlyn Bray, Taj Clarke, Jessen Creswell, Gaby Dow, Hannah Gibbs, Grace Keogh, Jake Levey, Isobel Norris, Mark Reilly, Kate Rintoul, Fennes Stevens and Mark Wooldridge. It’s fantastic to see all the junior athletes continuing to improve. The 100m feature event saw the girls take the lead with Kaitlin King taking running the fastest sprint in a time of 13.87sec followed by Isobel Norris at 15.4secs and Bridget Camisa with a time of 15.85secs.
Darcy Gray continues to impress in the sprint category and took out the 200m sprint with a time of 37.79secs, closely followed by Jedd Norris at 38.2secs and Shayden Richardson in 38.56secs. There were i m p r e s s i v e improvements in the 400m run with Mark Wooldridge wiping a huge 19secs off his PB to record the second fastest time of the night 1:17:7, which was only bettered by Kaitlin King in a time of 1:17:00. Adam Giltrow continued his form in the discus with the longest throw of 15.95m, followed by Zoe Patterson with a throw of 15.15m. U7 Connor McCabe threw a huge 12.63m. The older athletes took to the high jump with Ben Cusworth clearing 1.18m followed by Mark Wooldridge at 1.16m
and Isobel Norris breaking her PB on the way to clearing 1.12m. Mark Wooldridge recorded a new season record in the javelin with a throw of 22.27m, while nineyear-old Shayden Richardson jumped 3.7m in the long jump (the third longest jump of the season). Jessen Cresswell threw over 6m for his new PB in the shot put while Emily Krueger became the first U9 girl to clear 5m with a 20cm improvement on her previous PB. Bridget Camisa, Caitlin Walsham and Te Ariki Waipouri leapt beyond the 6m mark in the triple jump, (6.92m,6.43m and 6.43m respectively). The Turbo javelin had three impressive throws by Connor Jordon, Jake Buck and Jake Bulla all throwing over 10m (13.37m, 12.34m and 10.82m respectively).

Wolves to meet Rovers in footy grand final By Ben Leahy Minor premiers Wickham Wolves are set to take on the Port Hedland Rovers in the North Pilbara Football League grand final to be held at Hedland’s Colin Matheson Oval on Saturday August 31. Wickham earned their place in the big game by last week running out comfortable winners over the Karratha Falcons in their Preliminary Final clash held on Saturday August 24. Playing in front of a home crowd, the Wolves made their decisive break in the second quarter as they kept the Falcons goalless to go into the half time break with a 30-point lead. In the second half, the teams traded goals before the Wolves eventually ran out winners by 40 points as forward Eric Bedford booted six goals. The win was a much-needed

confidence boost for the Wolves as they now take on a Port Hedland side that beat them two weeks earlier in the Preliminary Final. Following a one-point win over cross town rivals the South Hedland Swans, the Port Hedland Reserves side will also be playing in this weekend’s grand final against the Karratha Falcons Reserves. The De Grey Medal for the NPFL’s best and fairest player was also awarded last week with Dampier Sharks player Lewis Upton polling the most votes despite his team winning just three matches for the season. The North Pilbara Football League 2013 Grand Final day kicks off at 4pm at Hedland’s Colin Matheson Oval with the Port Hedland Rovers Reserves up against the Karratha Falcons Reserves. At 6.45pm, the Seniors Grand Final kicks off with the Port Hedland Rovers taking on the Wickham Wolves under lights.

Those pumping iron in the Pilbara will have the chance to show off the results of their hard work this Saturday August 31 as the 2013 natural bodybuilding North West Titles are decided at the Tambrey Tavern. Contestants from Hedland, Karratha, Paraburdoo, Geraldton and Perth will enter into divisions ranging from the “softer figures” of the female bikini category to the harder bodied Ms Physique and Mr Perth overall winner categories. Among the other divisions,
there are also categories for Teenage Men, aged 19-years and under and a Masters Division for men and women aged 40-years and older. Winning competitors will get the chance to compete in the State Titles in Perth but they must be natural beauties. With the event being part of the International Natural Bodybuilding Association all competitors are expected to be drug-free and will be tested. The public are welcome to come and watch the North Titles with the judging rounds kicking off at 6pm and tickets costing $60.
