By Ben Leahy The 2013 Cossack Art Awards exhibition closed its doors last weekend and the public have had their say as Perth-born artist Tessa McOnie was voted the winner of the People’s Choice Award. With the majority of Cossack Art Awards prizes having been awarded earlier by professional judges, the People’s Choice instead came down to the more than 1,000 votes cast by visitors to the three-week awards exhibition.

Tessa and her artwork “Larry Smith” picked up 76 of these votes to narrowly beat out Vicki Sangster and her piece “Linked to the Land” on 75 votes. Yet Tessa’s painting was not just a fan favourite, as it was also highly commended by judges Seva Frangos, who is director of Seva Frangos Perth art gallery, and Lindy Lee, an arts lecturer at the University of Sydney. “The image is quite arresting,” the judges wrote in their official commendation of the artwork. “The eye contact with the subject is compelling; you feel as though you recognise him. “The work shows highly accomplished technique, which goes beyond photographic realism. “A lovely moment.” Tessa now picks up a $500 prize in addition to the pride of being the fan favourite. Worker killed at FMG Pilbara mine site By Ben Leahy

• Tootsie and the Teeth perform in her music video Sugar

Roebourne’s Love Punks and Satellite Sisters screen in final comic episode By Ben Leahy Roebourne’s comic heroes the Love Punks were back on the big screen on August 8 as the community turned out for a showing of the Neomad interactive comic’s third and final episode, Pork Chop. The comics have traced the adventures of characters called the Love Punks and Satellite Sisters, who are based on local boys and girls in the Roebourne community, as they learn more about the ancient culture hidden in the landscape surrounding them. Developed as part of community group Big hART’s Yijala Yala project, the comics have generated huge interest. They have led to the young Roebourne boys and girls, who worked on the project, featuring on national television, visiting Canberra to meet with politicians and even attending a comic conference in South Korea. An online game based on the comics was also reviewed in a US gaming magazine, while it is hoped that in the future the comics will be

increasingly used as an education tool in schools around the country. The August 8 screening also featured the premiere showing of Roebourne singer Tootsie Daniels latest music video called Sugar in which she performs alongside local children dressed as shiny white molars. In the video, Tootsie and the Teeth remind the community about health problems associated with excess sugar consumption, such as diabetes and dreaded encounters with the dentist’s drill.

Operations at the Pilbara’s Christmas Creek mine site were suspended on August 15 as authorities investigated the death of a contract worker, killed while working in an iron ore processing plant. The man, believed to be in his mid-20s, sustained fatal crush injuries at the Fortescue Metals Group iron ore mine, 120km north of Newman, in an incident that reportedly happened about 8pm on August 14. A team of DMP mines safety inspectors were due to arrive at the site on August 15 to commence an investigation. “Our thoughts are with family, friends and colleagues who have been impacted by this tragic incident,” DMP safety executive director Simon Ridge Ridge said. “This is a sad day for the entire Western Australian resources industry. “Our safety inspectors and investigators will now commence a full and thorough investigation into this incident, to get to the bottom of how this has occurred.” The last WA mines fatality occurred in August 2011, with 2012 recording its first fatality-free year in more than a century.

Man threatens public officer with hammer By Tamara Binamat Police are appealing to witnesses who drove past a public officer shortly after he was assaulted in Wedgefield on Wednesday afternoon. About 2:30pm, the Town of Port Hedland’s head ranger approached a tow truck driver to ask why he was towing a vehicle with council stickers on it. The offender threatened the 54-year-old ranger with a hammer before kicking the victim’s groin. South Hedland Police said the attack was unprovoked and the offender has been charged with assaulting a public officer and being armed in public to cause fear. The ranger was not hurt in the incident.

Karratha’s volunteer firefighters celebrate 40-years of service By Ben Leahy The Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service holds its 40th Anniversary Annual Dinner at the Ibis Styles hotel this Saturday August 17 to celebrate its history and a busy 2013 in which it answered 220 call outs. In 2013, the brigade responded to scrub and property fires, hazardous spills and road crashes, including major fires at the Dampier Mermaid workers accommodation, aboard a tugboat in Point Samson and at Mt Welcome Station. They also held open days and attended community events and fetes. And with no permanent firefighters based in the region, the work of the brigade and its volunteers, like Captain Mark Ellison, is vital. “If our fire phones go off during the day then we have to leave our jobs that pay us and go in to the station and turn out to the job,” Ellison said. “We’re averaging seven calls a week, some of which last anywhere from an hour to maybe six hours

depending on if we have to go to Onslow, Pannawonica, Wickham or Roebourne. “But the rewards are .. [that you make] new friends, complete skills enhancement training and give back and become more engaged with the community.” With town planners hoping to grow Karratha’s population to 50,000 people and permanent firefighters not likely to be based in the region until 2018-20, the volunteer brigade is set to continue to play its prominent role. Since forming in 1963 with 11 volunteer members drawn from a town population of 123 people, Karratha’s brigade has grown to include 52 members today. And as the brigade with the region’s most members, it is also the best resourced. “They tend to throw more training and equipment at us and we are known as the regional brigade because we keep all the regional resources within our brigade,” Mark said. “[This means] we get called to most of the major incidents … and we’ll turn

out to help the brigades in Point Samson, Roebourne, Wickham, Dampier and Onslow.” That was the case for Mark with the Point Samson tugboat fire, when he received a call at 4:30am to assemble a crew to respond to the incident. Despite having attended training in Perth to fight fires in confined spaces, the incident was confronting for Mark. “It was very daunting, climbing through the engine bay of a tug boat when it is on fire – you only have one exit and that is up the staircase,” Mark said. “It is very tight at the best

of times …and you couldn’t see more than a foot in front of you because of the smoke. “So you had to stop and take a breath and work out where you were before going forward. “The tugboat fire is not something that I want to do again but I’m glad that I’ve done it.” The Karratha Volunteer Fire and Rescue ball is reserved for members and their families but anyone is welcome to join the brigade as a volunteer by attending weekly training at its station on Welcome Road each Wednesday from 6:30pm.

Underwater technology boosts telecommunications to Pilbara By Tamara Binamat

seeking equity contribution at the final stage of going ahead with construction.

A $400 million proposal to establish an international subsea cable that will boost competitive telecommunications connectivity in the Pilbara region is now a big step closer to reality.

“We need all those things lined up to start construction.

The Beijing Construction and Engineering Group, with the support of the China Development Bank, recently signed a $320 million financial commitment with the Trident Subsea Cable company to fund the project. Trident is a specialist international telecommunications infrastructure company supporting WA and South East Asia. The new company has proposed the establishment of an underwater South East Asia telecommunications link to connect Perth, via Onslow in the Pilbara and Jakarta in Indonesia, to Singapore. The proposal also includes a connection to Port Hedland and a submarine cable loop around the North West Shelf. Mark de Kock, CEO at Trident, said the company is currently gaining approvals and permits to land the fibre optics cable system, with an aim to have the complete system operational by mid- 2015.

• Trident CEO and COO Mark de Kock and Chris Waters

“But before that we need to go through the permits and approvals process which is where we’re focusing now.” Mr de Kock and Trident COO Chris Waters are in talks with Dampier Port Authority, where they are hoping to land the fibre optic submarine fibre, and the Shire of Roebourne regarding possible locations for a data centre. The link would see the Pilbara gaining faster, cheaper and more reliable internet and open up employment opportunities. “It’s the latest state-of-the art cable technology, capable of 80 wavelengths that can carry 100 gigabits per second,” Mr de Kock said. “It’s there for easily meeting today’s needs and growth for the next 10-15 years.” Existing telcos are expected to have an interest in buying capacity in the cable.

“We have an agreement from a big Beijing construction engineering group that’s backed by the Chinese development bank,” Mr de Kock said.

“This is a market where some $70 billion of revenue has been pulled out of the ground with some very significant local and international players who are indicating to us that they would be delighted to have an independent carrier in the region,” Mr de Kock said.

“We will need to have a certain number of signed up customers, and then further down the road we’ll go through a capital-raising round where we’ll be

“[The system] is going to be there [with] the NBN, and a competitive industry is likely to pass on benefits to customers.”

Researchers to hunt for ancient artefacts in Dampier waters By Ben Leahy

• Historical displays at the Onslow Goods Shed Museum

Chevron provides $80,000 in grants By Ben Leahy Onslow’s hospital, sporting clubs and a local museum have received more than $80,000 in the latest round of community grants provided by the Chevron Australia Community Spirit Fund.

The Onslow Goods Shed Museum was among the nine community groups to receive funding as it was awarded a $10,000 grant to be used to purchase technology to help catalogue the history of the Onslow region. Onslow Goods Shed Museum historian and volunteer Dawn McAullay said preserving the cultural heritage of Onslow was important as the town prepares to grow alongside resources projects in the area. “The grant will enable us to continue to capture our priceless past for future generations who will be able to see and read about what Onslow used to be like,” she said. Other 2013 Onslow Community Spirit Fund grants include $6,900 awarded to the Onslow Hospital to help it purchase an instrument to conduct skin-checks and $8,000 for the Shire of Ashburton to buy barbeques for use at community events. The Pilbara Mesquite Management Committee also received $10,000 for weed management programs, while $10,000 was provided to the Onslow Community Garden and a further $7,500 to Variety WA for its 2013 Silver Bullet Bash. The Onslow Sports Group, Onslow Tennis Club and Onslow Rodeo Association also all received funds to upgrade their facilities.

Researchers believe that ancient underwater shorelines close to Dampier hold archaeological clues to a life that vanished in the Pilbara more than 7,000-years ago. Dr Ingrid Ward from the University of Western Australia is now hoping to raise funds to search the waters approximately 20km from Dampier for ancient artefacts and evidence of human waste materials. Ward said the Dampier Archipelago had at one time been part of a vast sandy plain inhabited by humans that stretched hundreds of kilometres south to Barrow Island and Exmouth. However, with the end of the last ice age, rising sea levels began to flood the plain in an event many believe is represented in the region’s rock art. Among the more than one million rock engravings on the Burrup Peninsula, dating back thousands of years, are depictions of both marine and land animals. “This is thought to represent the change in sea level because as sea levels rose the rock art depicted more marine than terrestrial fauna,” Ward said. “So we’ve got this story in the rock art but we haven’t got any indication from [archaeological remains] … and we are trying to put the two together.”

The interest in the North West’s submerged archaeology follows the success of similar programs in Europe and other parts of the world. The UWA’s Ward previously spent eightyears overseeing a project by UK government body English Heritage in which fishing vessels in the North Sea handed in fossils and artefacts they found while dredging the ocean floor for fish. The project uncovered Palaeolithic hand-axes, Mesolithic bone and antler tools and fossils of mammoth, elk and other animals, which revealed detailed information about the vast plain that connected Britain to Europe during the last ice age. Yet while Europeans were making their first offshore finds as far back as the 1930s, very little is known of Australia’s submerged landscapes. “My experience is that we in Australia have fallen behind the rest of the world in looking offshore,” Ward said. She said researchers were interested in Australia’s North West because underwater surveys completed by the oil and gas industry revealed the locations of ancient shorelines. Ward also believes that the Dampier Archipelago and Burrup Peninsula were important to Indigenous people thousands of years ago as a source of fresh water and granite rocks for use in tools.

Such ancient artefacts would also be likely well preserved underwater because the archipelago’s seabed hardened into carbonate, a solidified mixture of shell and quartz, once it flooded. Ward said the other great advantage of the Pilbara was the knowledge of the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation and locals like Tim Douglas. As the chief law person for the Murujuga, the Indigenous name for the Burrup Peninsula, Douglas knows ancient oral histories that tell of the geographic features of the land offshore before it flooded. “That is a big difference, because, unlike the rest of the world, we have a living heritage of people, who can still tell us about that offshore environment,” Ward said. Yet, despite this, big challenges remain for researchers. They must first raise the extensive funds needed to complete more detailed underwater surveys of the Dampier Archipelago before they even get close to diving for potential artefacts. “[The project is] gaining momentum – we just need to keep making more people aware that there is a lost landscape around the whole of Australia that we need to look after,” Ward said.

• Andrew Ward whips up a South East Asian masterpiece in the 2012 MasterChef

Festival to crown Pilbara’s best barbie chef By Ben Leahy

A N IN VA OW NE ILA W BL M E AN !

If you rule out drinking beer, then there is arguably no activity more popular in the Pilbara than cooking a feast on the barbie. Every weekend, barbeques flare to life in a mass ritual more sacred to locals than going to the footy or even heading out fishing in the tinny. So with half the Pilbara fancying themselves akin to a Michelin Star chef when it comes to wielding the BBQ tongs, the 2013 Red Earth Arts Festival’s MasterChef competition on September 21 ought to be one that’s hotly contested. Entries to the competition are now open, yet defending champ and Shire of Roebourne employee, Andrew Ward, maintains that he is not worried. Having shown sizzling form to win the inaugural REAF Masterchef competitions in 2011 and ’12, he is back this year aiming at a “three-peat”. He said his BBQ prowess stems from the fact his partner doesn’t trust him in the kitchen. “I’m always keen to cook on the barbie at home but not in the kitchen – I always seem to stuff it up in the kitchen,” he said. Yet if it’s already hot in the kitchen for Andrew, it is likely to also heat up on the BBQ as he is set to face stiffer competition in this year’s MasterChef. Organisers are looking for three members of the public to challenge him and cook in the September 21 event alongside a group of Pilbara personalities. To earn a place in the competition,

interested barbie chefs need to visit the REAF Facebook page and post a photo of a barbeque they have hosted or a meal they’ve cooked. They also need to write a short message about why they should be in the 2013 MasterChef with the three winners being those that attract the most Facebook likes and comments. The winning contestants will also take home a Weber Q barbeque. But for defending champ Andrew, it is not just the extra competition that he needs to worry about. Having bragged a little too vigorously to Shire of Roebourne colleagues about his previous MasterChef victories, he now thinks the event organisers – who also happen to be his workmates – are targeting him with new rule changes. With contestants in the past being able to cook a meal of their choice, Andrew whipped up winning South East Asian and salmon wrapped in prosciutto dishes. Yet, this year, he won’t be able to perfect his dishes before the event because MasterChef contestants will instead have to cook from a Mystery Box of ingredients, which is only revealed on the day. “I now know the organisers are trying to undermine my tilt at a three-peat,” Andrew said. However, Andrew isn’t letting the rule changes get him down. He has a defiant message to those game to challenge him. “All the best and bring it on,” he said.

Pilbara business nominated for Deadlys success By Ben Leahy It’s been a big 12-months for Triscilla Holborrow and her colleagues at Karratha-based business Real Employment for Aboriginal People.

Thank you

In the past year, the company, which specialises in employing Aboriginal people, has picked up prizes as the best Indigenous business at both the Karratha chamber of commerce and the WA regional small business excellence awards. Now REFAP co-founder Triscilla is also up for an award at The Deadlys after being nominated as one of five finalists in the Employment category. As the most prestigious music, sport, arts and community awards for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, The Deadlys will be a star-studded and nationally broadcast event held in the Sydney Opera House on September 10.

And for Triscilla and colleague Kelly Grady, it could hardly be a more different setting than that in which they founded REFAP in July 2010.

“There we were in a cycloneproof shed with a second hand laptop and a single mobile phone, and three years later we are sitting pretty at the Opera House,” Triscilla said. “So we excited.”

The Deadlys nomination caps a period of rapid growth for REFAP.

of 800-plus unemployed people within the region,” Triscilla said.

The business was founded three-years ago primarily to make money by winning contract work with mining companies, but also to help local Indigenous people gain employment and lessen the need for FIFO workers.

“They now come to REFAP My Pathways, have an interview, and it is up to us to job place them and help them with long term goals and training if need be.”

It now employs18 full time staff and a large casual workforce – 80 per cent of whom are Indigenous – working in cleaning and camp management contracts. The group had also set itself the goal of becoming nationally recognised within 10-years - something it has now achieved seven-years ahead of schedule thanks to The Deadlys nomination. “We are over the moon because the recognition shows that what we are doing is successful,” Triscilla said. The group’s success has now also helped them win a major Federal Government contract to work with job seekers in Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham, Onslow and Pannawonica. As part of the contract, anyone from these regions on Centrelink payments will now go to REFAP’s new business, REFAP My Pathways, to help them get back to work. “We’ve picked up a caseload

Unlike her first business, Triscilla said REFAP My Pathways gave her the chance to help locals find jobs outside of mining. “We obviously have our larger clients like the Rios, BHPs and Chevrons, but not everyone is job ready to be able to take on that scale of work,” she said. “Now we will also be focusing on locals, who might want to work in retail or be a hairdresser or accountant, and provide them with more trainee and apprenticeship opportunities. “I know for a fact that a lot of local businesses are flying in people for everyday jobs that aren’t related to the mining industry “So we have a passionate team, who will be going out to local businesses saying, ‘Let’s employ locally and try and cut the fly-in, fly-out down a bit’. “We’ve got really good skilled people in town with qualifications, who need to be given a go.” And that sounds like a recipe for Deadlys success.

In more positive news, recovery of the US economy continues to gather steam, as they managed to add 162,000 jobs in July taking their unemployment to 7.4 per cent – its lowest level since 2008. In local news the ASX200 fell 61 points (1.19 per cent) for the week, closing at 5,055 points on Friday August 9. Domestically, we are just starting reporting season and results so far have shown promise with Telstra’s profit in line with expectations and CBA’s coming in slightly better than expected, posting a $3.81 and $7.82bn profit respectively.

The main operating business is WesTrac and is the dominant heavy equipment supplier in its authorised government, construction and mining sectors. Seven Group holds significant interests in ASX-listed Seven West Media and Prime Media Group. The media shareholdings, while offering few synergies with the industrial businesses, provide passive exposure to the highly cyclical domestic television, newspaper and magazine sectors. While Hartleys currently maintains a HOLD recommendation on SVW with a fair value of $9.00, I see it performing strongly in a recovering domestic economy. SVW closed Tuesday August 13 at $7.77 per share.

“Karratha has been a great supporter of the event over the 20 years,” he said. “But if you’re thinking of getting involved, I would suggest that you make sure you have some nice riding pants because you can end up with a pretty sore butt!”

Information on Western Australia’s natural gas production, transmission, storage capacity and demand has been made available online for the first time. Energy Minister Mike Nahan said the new Gas Bulletin Board website provided a snapshot of the availability of natural gas to meet industry and consumer demand. Operated by the Independent Market Operator, the website also provides emergency information.

The launch of the Gas Bulletin Board delivers on recommendations of the Gas Supply and Emergency Management Committee in 2009, following the 2008 Varanus Island gas supply disruption. “This private and secure page provides another tool for the State Government and the gas industry to manage gas supply disruptions that may potentially escalate into an emergency,” Dr Nahan said. The committee also recommended the annual

publication of a Gas Statement of Opportunities to identify investment needs and opportunities in the gas sector. “The Gas Statement of Opportunities provides a medium to longer-term outlook of gas supply and demand in WA, and identifies constraints in production and transportation infrastructure,” Dr Nahan said. “This will promote planning and investment activities, supported by government policy.”

The IMO recently released an initial Gas Statement of Opportunities, which it will publish on an annual basis. “The Gas Bulletin Board and Gas Statement of Opportunities will help the Government deliver secure, reliable, competitive and cleaner energy. “These initiatives will also promote efficient operation, use and investment in natural gas, meeting the needs of the community and supporting WA’s economic development.”

suburbs to the north, south, east and west of your top five estates and do your research. Often the peripheral suburbs still enjoy the same benefits but are priced much more competitively because they are positioned on the ‘other’ side of the freeway, an extra five minutes from the train station or slightly further from the CBD. The differences may be marginal but it could end up saving you tens of thousands of dollars. Our investment specialists are constantly scouting for the best investment opportunities throughout

WA so if you have a budget and an area in mind, they will be more than happy to assist you to narrow down the options, completely free of charge. There are plenty of exciting areas throughout Perth that are ripe for investors so now is the time to make the most of the opportunities available. Got a question? HIGH QUALITY BULK MEATS including:

event Jimmy Barnes and the Pleasure House By Tamara Binamat Australia’s favourite working class man is returning to the North West with his highly successful daughter Mahalia Barnes supporting him on the Pilbara leg of his Pleasure House tour. Tickets have flown out the door for his performances in Karratha and Port Hedland, and Barnes said he relates so well to people working in our region because he understands the meaning of hard work. “It’s a beautiful part of the country, but it is very tough,” Barnes said. “We’ve played in mining towns and farming towns since 40 years ago with Cold Chisel and [the people] relate to the music. “We have a serious work ethic. We go there and we spend the time playing and my view is that for the two hours people are there, they forget they are working anywhere. “We make them think every night is Saturday night - that’s my job.” Barnes said regional audiences have

www.

supported him for 40 years and he wants to show he values their support. A poster boy for blue-collar workers, Jimmy said he himself grew up in a working class family. “We had it tough and although I’ve worked and made money over the years I still really relate to those families that are battling and trying to make a living,” he said. Barnes’ own family works very closely with him, and he has been performing with his daughter Mahalia for 15 years. With a recording studio at home huge musical stars and international music producers have always surrounded the Barnes children. “It was just natural for them to drift into [music] and as it happened Mahalia was always singing with me [and had access to] a headline act,” Barnes said. “Consequently out of that the band is really, really tight and Mahalia is so in tune with me.” With 16 studio albums under his belt,

Australia’s father of rock and roll said he won’t slow down yet. “I love singing,” he explained. “I make records as a vehicle for touring because I love playing live. “I can’t see myself stopping making records for a long time.” The Pleasure House tour is named after a new song on Barnes’ yet-to-bereleased album, due for release early 2014. When tickets for the tour are sold, purchasers receive a free digital download of the song. The Pleasure House tour will offer Barnes’ well-know hits, and Barnes revealed they’ve even dragged out some songs that haven’t been played in a long time. “People are going to love it,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to getting up there.”

What’s the stress with all this stress? Do you feel like you’re climbing up the side of a great ravine and you keep slipping, holding on with merely your fingertips? Are you unable to cope with little things like losing your car keys? Does the sight of a wet towel on the floor makes you feel like you’re going to lose your mind? If yes, you’re probably not going crazy, you’re stressed. Everyone on the planet suffers from some sort of stress. Some is manageable and some is much harder to cope with. There are times in our life where we suffer from extra external stressors as well like workload excess, people close to us with illness or other dramas that occur. Hopefully these are short term and the stress response we have helps us to cope and manage through them. The chronic stress is where our problems arise. The unfortunate factor is that many of us think we’re coping ok and when we finally notice we are suffering from a stress response that is affecting us (and the poor people around us) it is often far too late. By then we have said or done things that are out of character or made errors of judgement that have a roll on effect. Some simple signs of stress are anxiety, panic attacks, fidgeting, restless and overactive mind, loss of appetite and rapid weight loss. Other signs are severe exhaustion, sweating excessively, perfectionist tendencies, insomnia, memory loss, depression and psychosis.

We unfortunately have a higher risk of alcohol and drug use at these times as well. Through the presentation of these symptoms we have changed the chemistry of our body to be imbalanced. Stress not only affects our brain biochemistry, it also affects how our adrenal gland works and the function of the thyroid and the pituitary gland. Our adrenal gland helps with our blood pressure, our sleep cycles and also keeps us calm and gives us energy.

Are you unable to cope with little things like losing your car keys? The thyroid helps with energy, temperature balance, weight control, muscle mass and stamina to name but a few. The pituitary is the balancer of both of these and also stimulates the release of cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that is released and used to keep us calm in short term stress. It is when the stress response becomes stressed that we have a problem; that good old cortisol just keeps on pumping out and then we are so highly strung we a definitely headed for a nuclear meltdown! So here are some tips on what to do when you feel like you’re losing it: Firstly stop - that’s right stop. Assess

the situation into the things you can change and the things you can’t. Accept it and take a breath - a really big one, or maybe even ten. Next practice is what I call radical gratitude because you are guaranteed there is someone much worse off than you right now. Someone that will pass from this earth at that second and not get to hug their babies or say goodbye to people they love again. It may sound a bit hippy but realistically you know it’s true. Then remember what you put in is what you get out so stop eating those chocolates and drinking beer and eat live food that has actual nutrients in it so you get some energy back and start your body up again. Also put some time aside to relax, whether it’s listening to music, meditating, fishing, boxing or yoga. Whatever you pick write it in your diary and do it. Don’t wait, it makes you feel calm and happy so do it. I’m keeping it simple so here are a few extra tips: • Get some counseling as sometimes it is good to talk to someone. • Make sure you have good friends that you can chat to, set your life goals with and aspire to them. • Follow your path, make sure you rest more and get your time management skills in order. There are many other reasons that stress can affect you internally and that’s where you need to see your health practitioner to help you decipher your insides. We have a saying at Abundance Health: everything is fixable, keep calm and rock on!

Yogic experiences abroad keep Karratha’s Grainne fresh By Ben Leahy Unlike city dwellers, Karratha Yoga teacher Grainne O’Connell is not able to just pop across town and catch up with a mentor to seek their help with her yoga poses or her students. So instead the full-time business lecturer at the Pilbara Institute now averages two trips abroad each year to study at retreats run by leading Australian and international yoga teachers. Grainne was in Bali last month attending a two-week retreat organised by Caroline Coggins, who runs a yoga centre in Sydney and has 35-years experience in the field. Sydney teacher Caroline was also one of the first people to bring Iyengar yoga to Australia after learning it in India from worldrenowned practitioner BKS Iyengar. So for Grainne, visits to Caroline’s retreats have been an important means of building a mentoring

relationship that goes beyond just the two weeks they meet face-toface. “It is important to keep relevant and updating your skills so for me getting overseas and getting to world class teachers is really important,” Grainne said. “I can also email Caroline and say, ‘I have this student that I don’t know what to do with’ or ‘I’ve got a theoretical question’ – so it has been really valuable for me to have her as a mentor.” Grainne’s lessons abroad can also have immediate effects on Karratha students as the odd new pose she brings back to them leads to some tough workouts. “From week to week it can be quite different, the classes are sometimes quite strong on the legs and we work on strengthening, and then other weeks they are much more gentle and focusing on restoring your energy,” Grainne said.

Beach Volleyball is here Summer is coming and the North West Volleyball Association is gearing up for some hot action on the new Karratha Leisureplex beach courts with its mixed foura-side beach volleyball season. The games will be taking place under lights on Tuesday nights and teams and individuals are encouraged to come down to the Aquatic Centre on Tuesday August 20 to join in the fun. Games will be played from 6.30pm until 8.30pm and teams will need to pay a $20 registration fee and then $5 per player per

night. All players of all skills levels are invited to come down and have a game on the beautiful white sand as the season kicks off on August 27. Players are reminded they will need to pay entry into the aquatic centre for each night or purchase a membership from the friendly staff at the front desk. We look forward to seeing many new faces and if you require further information please contact Pauline on 0409 875 589.

For Grainne, the physical benefits also go beyond flexibility. “I used to find that the flexibility of yoga was what made me feel really good, but as I get older and into my 30s I’m finding that it is not just about bending yourself into a big pretzel shape,” Grainne said. “I’m also finding that stabilising joints and building up the structure of your body through the poses is really important too. “Yoga is very balancing emotionally as well – it makes you very resilient. “It helps you calm yourself and bring your stress levels down without using anything external, like a glass of wine, and instead just use your breath.” Grainne’s Karratha Yoga classes run on Saturdays at 8am and Mondays at 5:45pm. For more information phone her on 0437 903 571 or visit www. karrathayoga.com.

Junior Soccer match report By Nat Gray Karratha junior soccer games will now all be played on Saturdays after the last round was the final week of mid-week fixtures. The mid-week games were played at Tambrey Oval with Glory 1 holding off a determined Nickol 3 in the 13s age group, followed by Glory running out the winners over Nickol in the 17s competition. In the Saturday games, Nickol 1 had a comfortable win in the 13s competition over Nickol 3 in what was the match of the round. The Dampier U13s held off a fast finishing Glory 1 to win by the narrowest of margins with several shots on goals by both teams hitting the woodwork. Well played to both teams. In the last match, Glory 2 was too strong for Nickol 2 with both teams scoring some excellent goals from outside the penalty area. In Saturday’s 17s match, Dampier drew with Nickol in what was the first draw in this age group for the season. The draw was possible following an excellent long distance goal from Nickol very close to full time – again well played by both teams. With four rounds of the home and away season left, the teams for the finals in both age groups are yet to be decided. Good luck to everyone over the coming weeks with the grand finals scheduled for Saturday September 14.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates Well hello yellow! This is what anglers have been saying this week in the deep waters, as schools of massive yellowfin tuna estimated at up to 100kg have been encountered. Neil Smith and Ian Huxter in Neil’s fivemetre centre console caught four yellow rippers last week, and there’s been plenty of sashimi around-a-bouts as a result. Leigh Freestone, Leigh Mitchell and Matt Gates also headed out and began with a four-way hook up as soon as they came close to the area where the birds were working out wide. Leigh and Matt then jumped in with dive gear and braved the deep ocean to attempt getting one on spear and video. The adrenalin from just simply being in the water with fish of this calibre was incredible, and the two guys are still pumped about the day. Although they didn’t get one on spear, the experience was one they will never forget. Local boat ‘The Bear’ headed out for a few days while the weather was perfect and managed to tag half a dozen black marlin, while also raising a super big blue marlin and a striped marlin. The crew onboard also caught some great fish by deep dropping, including the 20kg ruby jobfish pictured this week that

was caught on a Daiwa metal jig. On the shore scene, it has been a little quiet inside the gulf, although Bundegi has had some big schools of garfish in close that have been smashed up by predatory fish like mackerel, queenfish and giant trevally. The spectacle can be seen from shore and has kept visitors well entertained. Another sight from the shore is the whales, with plenty of them breeching in the gulf daily. The Exmouth Game Fishing Club has had great success with the fishing clinics on Saturday mornings with over a dozen kids showing up for the two-hour session. Last week they learnt about knots and rigs, while this week it was about lures and casting. The clinics will be held each Saturday this term and anyone is welcome to come down to the EGFC and join in. Cost to attend the clinics is $5 per week and includes a sausage sizzle as well as a lure and other goodies to take home each week – so it’s well worth it. Other weekend sessions will include learning about compliance, boating, trolling, filleting, fly fishing and many more topics. In other local news, Aaron Rampling was out fishing with Peak Sportfishing

• Boogie with his ripper ruby and skipper Mike Smith last week and caught a pending WA and Australian record sailfish on fly gear with 8kg tippet. The fish weighed in at 33.8kg and is yet another great fish to be hooked in Exmouth waters. But it is possible that catches like Aaron’s could be a thing of the past. I don’t like to get political with anything I write, but with the government’s recent draft proposals calling for further extensions to Sanctuary Zones, I feel I must alert you all to what could possibly mean a

dire future for Exmouth. A vote for Labor or the Greens could result in the entire area out from Exmouth being a no-fishing zone. This would be detrimental to our whole community. Most Exmouth people believe in management, but this is extreme and being pushed by extreme green groups. Visit www.keepaustraliafishing.com.au or www.environment.gov.au for more information.

Junior athletes perform strongly in hurdles and triple jump By Rob Krueger Karratha’s Little Athletics Club held its seventh competition meet recently with the 62 athletes breaking a combined 120 personal bests. Lucas Whitehouse and Zoe Patterson were terrific on the night in breaking five PBs in five events, while eight other competitors broke four out of five PBs. These athletes were Mark and Emma Wooldridge, Britt Stevens, Cohen Hancock, Mia Warren, Harry Harding, Indyana Lloyd and Mary Anne Wall – well done to all. After a week off, the hurdle events were back on the program and Maddie Keogh continued her consistent run of breaking personal bests whenever the hurdles are on offer. Kate Rintoul also went well under 19secs to record a personal best of 18.77secs for the 60m hurdle sprint, which is a huge effort for

Kate given that the hurdles are almost as big as she is herself. Isobel Norris recorded the fastest hurdles time for the night with an 11.67 sec run. With the ground still a little soggy post FeNaClNG, Harry Harding and Lucas Whitehouse were the only athletes, who managed to break their PBs for the 70m sprints. Desiree Ieremia with a time of 15.46secs recorded the fastest 100m sprint, followed by Ben Cusworth and 10-year-old Bridget Camisa (16.05 and 16.32secs respectively). Adam Giltrow threw the javelin 14.3m – two metres further than his nearest competitor – while Kiran Byles topped 17.58m in the turbo javelin. Not to be outdone by her brother, Jess Giltrow broke a new PB in the long jump, falling short of the two metre barrier by one centimetre. Jake Levey went one step better and leapt beyond the two metre mark to take out a new PB. Both Desiree Ieremia and Karishma Byles added to their PB records for the long jump with efforts above three metres (3.38 & 3.34m respectively). Mark Wooldridge managed to head the pack with a 6.83m shot put, while Jake Buck took out the U8 Boys with a 5.39m PB effort. All the U11s smashed their PBs in the technical triple jump, with Zoe Patterson heading everyone as the only competitor to hop, step and jump further than six metres with a season best 6.4m. The night proved to be another great event with only three more competition nights now remaining in the season. FeNaClNG a huge success for Ovation By Megan Wood-Hill

After forming 18-months ago, performing arts group Ovation made its second-ever FeNaClNG appearance on August 3, as it performed its Festivals of the World show. The continuous twenty-minute showstopper presented scenes from Venice and Bollywood and finished with a Rio Samba number. The balletic Venetian ball set the scene for the rest of the group’s performance as its acrobatic students impressed with their tumbles and aerial feats and the gondola drivers gave the audience a giggle. The song and dance students’ comedic rendition of Amoré also impressed. With feather fans direct from Las Vagas in the hands of perfectly polished senior jazz students, the upbeat Samba even brought some of the men out of the beer tent to steal a look. Ovation also gained a mention once their performance had finished as MC Margaret Bertling felt compelled to congratulate the company on its FeNaClNG show and its work in “bringing such a high quality of the arts to our local area”. To top the weekend off, Ovation also won the float parade with their Festivals of the World theme. Ovation would like to thank all of its hard working families and acknowledge the generosity of Coates Hire and Cummins.

Local DeckArts dance student Allira Simpson is kicking her heels up in celebration as she last week secured her place in one of Western Australia’s most exclusive dance and performing arts colleges. The 12-year-old Pilbara resident had earlier auditioned alongside hundreds of hopefuls before last week receiving her acceptance letter into the John Curtin College of Arts in Perth ballet and contemporary course starting in Year 8 in 2015. The John Curtin College course specialises in training students, who are aspiring towards a professional career in the arts. Director of DeckArts Lea Cullen Lynes said she is extremely proud of Allira, who has been training at DeckArts since it opened four years ago in Karratha. Allira recently attended a

professional winter dance camp at Dance World Studio’s in Melbourne in which she gained valuable experience. “I learned so much from dancing all day for a week with lots of amazing teachers, and I had heaps of fun,” Allira said. Lea said DeckArts provides expert training to students, such as Allira, in a non-competitive environment. The company’s focus is in encouraging students to be the best dancer and artist they can be for themselves with director Lea maintaining that dance is an art form and not a sport. “[My] students learn with discipline, fun and strive toward excelling in their classes just as Allira has,” Lea said. “Congratulations Allira from everyone at DeckArts.”
