Condolences after ‘top’ police boss passes By Tamara Binamat

Statistics show that drivers are still being charged for not restraining their children in the car correctly. This is an extremely important law and there have been changes to the child restraint laws. The old law stated that a child under 12-months-old must be restrained by a suitable child restraint. There was no requirement for a child over this age to be in a child restraint; a child over 12-months-old could wear an adult seatbelt (Reg 235(1) Road Traffic Code). In brief, the changes to the law relate to: • The type of restraint required according to the age of the passenger - see below. • Who can sit in front seat according to age. • Passengers must equal the number of seatbelts. • Responsibility rests with the driver for ensuring passengers under 16-years-old wear appropriate seat belts/restraints. Birth to under 6-months-olds are required to be in a rearward facing

child restraint e.g. an infant capsule or convertible child restraint. 6-month-olds to 4-year-olds are required to be in a child restraint with an in-built harness. 4-year-olds to 7-year-olds are required to be in a forward-facing child restraint or booster seat. A child over 26kg in this age group may sit on a rear seat without a booster seat using an adult seatbelt. 7-year-olds and over can sit in front or rear seats and use adult seatbelts. The law has also changed regarding allowing children to sit in the front seat. In a vehicle with two or more rows of seats, children under 4-years-old are not to sit in the front seat. In a vehicle with two or more rows of seats, children aged 4 to 7-yearsold are not permitted in the front seat unless children under 7-years-old occupy other rear seat positions. If you need your child restraint checked please call Lynelle Fozard from SDERA on 9185 0111. If you would like any more information visit www.carrestraints. com.au.

Members of the police force and the general community paid their respects yesterday at the funeral of senior sergeant Anthony Gaskell, who passed away on Wednesday July 24. Senior sergeant Gaskell served as the officer in charge at Karratha Police Station for three years and was an active employee right up until last month. After a battle with cancer, senior sergeant Gaskell passed away in Karratha surrounded by his family. His obituary reads that he was a proud member of the WA Police Force, and “there will be more smiles in heaven now that he has arrived”. Senior sergeant Gaskell was involved in various community activities, most notably the Karratha to Broome annual charity bike ride, which he organised for two years. Karratha’s acting senior sergeant Matt Hartfield said his former boss was well liked and a valued member of the community. “I’ve worked for Tony for two and a half years and consider him to be probably the best officer in charge to work for,” he said. “He was considerate and passionate, but hardworking, and will be sadly missed at the Karratha Police Station. “This is a very sad loss for the community and the officers at Karratha Police Station.”

Company goes to great heights to save ospreys Marine infrastructure business Marine & Civil, with the help of The Department of Parks and Wildlife, have successfully relocated an osprey nest with chicks from a moored barge to a speciallyconstructed nesting platform at Point Samson boat harbor. In a carefully-planned 45-minute operation conducted with the assistance of Pilbara Wildlife Carers, the

chicks were removed from the nest while it was taken from the barge on a tarpaulin and placed on the elevated platform. The parent ospreys returned about 20 minutes after the chicks had been returned to the nest. DPaW wildlife officer Ty Matson said the relocation highlighted the need to be aware of ospreys building

nests on infrastructure and to discourage them if possible. “As part of their inspection and maintenance programs, the department encourages coastal businesses to deter birds from building nests, or, if one is discovered, speak to DPaW about

removing it before eggs are laid,” Mr Matson said.

Charges upgraded after infant’s death By Tamara Binamat A 25-year-old man from Broome is facing murder and sexual assault charges in relation to a 10-month-old baby boy. The infant died en route to Nickol Bay Hospital in March this year after arriving at Fortescue Roadhouse near Karratha with Mervyn Kenneth Douglas Bell, who was in a relationship with the boy’s mother. Bell arrived at the Roadhouse with the injured baby after driving 900 kilometres from Broome. He appeared at the Karratha Magistrates Court on Tuesday July 30 via video link from Casuarina Prison to face a charge of grievous bodily harm. The charge was dismissed and new charges were laid including murder, sexually penetrating a child under the age of 13, and a charge of assault on the boy’s mother. He will appear at Stirling Magistrates Court at Perth in August.

Man attacked in vicious assault By Tamara Binamat South Hedland Police are investigating an assault after a 39-year-old resident was bashed in his caravan in Wedgefield. Police believe two offenders premeditated the attack, specifically targeting the man and assaulting him at around 3am Wednesday July 31 before fleeing. Police said the accused men jumped the fence surrounding the industrial lot the man lived at, pulled the door off the caravan, dragged the man out and assaulted him. “It was a targeted attack – it wasn’t random,” Senior Sargeant Mick Hayes said. The victim suffered cuts requiring stitches to his nose, suspected broken eye sockets and a possible arm and elbow fracture. He also suffered bruising across his chest, back and legs. Police are still conducting inquiries and would not comment on the relation of the suspects to the victim.

• Firefighters spent three days trying to control this fire near Onslow last year

Rain sparks fire fear for region By Tamara Binamat Bushfire season is upon us and local residents are being warned this season could be big, as the recent heavy rainfall around the Pilbara means extra vegetation and more fuel for fire. Port Hedland suffered the first fire of the season on Wednesday, and rangers were kept busy trying to extinguish the blaze on Buttweld Road, South Hedland, for around two and a half hours. Rangers deemed the fire a high threat as it was burning less than two kilometres from the South Hedland townsite Wayne Cook, Acting District Officer Karratha, said once hot easterly winds combine with hot temperatures, the extra vegetation will dry out, ideal conditions for a bushfire to spread. “Communities should be aware of fires,” Mr Cook said. “They do start naturally at times, [such as] when we get the dry lightning, but it’s important for community members to be aware of what their activities are doing.” Mr Cook said activities to be aware of as dangers include conducting hotworks in the open, using cutting equipment, starting open camping fires and using barbecues. “Once the vegetation dries out the likelihood of fires starting because of those activities increase dramatically,” he said. Mr Cook also advises travellers to

be careful and monitor any of their fires, making sure there is clear vegetation for three to five metres around the campfire. Travellers must also make sure the fire is fully extinguished when they leave. Department of Fire and Emergency Services Kimberley Superintendent Grant Pipe said bushfires can start suddenly, without warning and travel fast. “It is important for people who are travelling in WA’s north to be prepared and know what to do if they encounter a fire,” Mr Pipe said. “You should enjoy your time away but if you’re exploring our State you need to know what roads are closed and be aware of any warnings that are in place so you can act to keep yourself safe.” Mr Pipe said there were 291 bushfires in the Kimberley and 301 bushfires in the Pilbara between July and December last year, with a number occurring near large towns and settlements. Mr Cook said if anyone comes a cross a fire, they should move to a safe area at the first instance and then notify emergency services by calling 000.

Research vessel to share scientific insights into Ningaloo Reef By Ben Leahy

Scientific interest in Ningaloo versus the Great Barrier Reef

• The level of scientific interest in the Great Barrier Reef versus Ningaloo Reef as gauged by the amount of search enquiries on scholarly site Web of Science. Source: Ningaloo Atlas.

Exmouth residents can this week learn more about the North West’s marine environment by taking a tour of the Solander research vessel. Operated by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the Solander is the largest research vessel based in Western Australia, spending up to 300 days per year working in waters between Exmouth and Darwin. This week some of the scientific insights and discoveries made aboard the ship will be shared with local residents as the Solander opens its decks to visitors on August 9. Equipped with wet and dry laboratories and the ability to mount sophisticated camera and geoscience equipment to video and map reefs and the ocean floor, Dr Steve Rogers from AIMS in Western Australia said the Solander undertakes wide ranging research. “We cover virtually the whole range of marine tropical science,” Rogers said. “AIMs scientists [aboard the Solander] study coral reefs, submerged shoals, whale sharks, marine fauna … and seabed geomorphology.”

The Solander’s Exmouth visit this week and the vessel’s launch in 2007 come alongside increased efforts to promote the value of Western Australia’s extensive reefs and shoals. Visited by dolphins, whales and whale sharks and with more than 200 species of corals and 460 species of reef fish, the Ningaloo Reef rivals the Great Barrier Reef for beauty and diversity. Despite this, scientists are able to study the Great Barrier Reef from a network of coral reef research centres, while in Western Australia there are no comparable facilities anywhere between Perth and Darwin. Since its founding in early 2011, however, a website supported by AIMS called Ningaloo Atlas has been trying to aid research at Ningaloo by acting as a central location for academics to share and find links to scientific papers about the reef. The Ningaloo Atlas is also increasingly attempting to share that scientific knowledge with the public. As part of this drive, it has organised a collection of leading scientists to give public talks at the Exmouth Game Fishing Club on August 9, once the tours of the

Solander vessel are finished. These include talks on sharks, whale sharks, dolphins, jellyfish, demersal fish and even ways to help look after the reef as a volunteer. The Solander vessel is also a regular participant in Ningaloo research projects, including reef studies and the tracking of whale sharks using acoustics. With taxpayers funding AIMS and the Solander, Dr Rogers said it was important to share this with the community. “Our key stakeholder is the Australian public and our remit is to deliver economic, social and environmental benefit,” Rogers said. “A major focus of AIMS at Ningaloo is to inform the community about how our work is hopefully benefiting the long term sustainability and management of the reef. “The economic wellbeing of the community is obviously tied closely to the reef in this part of the world.” Details of the Solander tours and Exmouth talks can be found at www.ningaloo-atlas. org.au or by phoning Nick Middleton on 0437 619 456 – tour reservations are required by Tuesday August 6.

Pilbara bands to battle for their place in North West Fest Hedland’s North West Festival is back this month with a line up featuring more big name artists than have ever assembled in the Pilbara before. Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Grinspoon, The Black Seeds, 360, Abbe May and Vance Joy all perform at the Port Hedland Turf Club on Saturday August 24. Yet there is still space for one more act. And that act will not be decided until August 22 when four Pilbara groups compete in a battle of the bands for the chance to play the festival’s opening gig two-days later. Hedland rock and country band The Bad Influence won the competition – called the Best of North West – in 2012 with singer Brad Hall calling the experience of playing the festival’s huge stage electrifying. “[When I strummed my guitar] just the feeling of the sound travelling, I was like, ‘Wow, this is cool’,” Brad said. “You could hear it travel all the way from the oval to Cooke Point.” In addition to feeling as if he had the power to deafen an audience at will, Brad said he also felt a sense of history.

“The boys were proud to kick off the very first North West Festival last year, because I think it is going to grow into one of the main festivals in WA and even Australia,” he said. He also took the opportunity to learn from the festival’s professional sound crew. “I do a lot of the sound myself for our band,” Brad said. “So I gained a lot listening to how these professional sound guys want you to warm up and play, especially the idea of playing [a sound check] the way you perform in the gig. “We used to be pretty cruisey about it, but it’s like training bad before a football match, you take those bad habits into the big game.” Karratha band Vincent Law also entered the competition last year. Having been beaten by The Bad Influence on that occasion, drummer Geoff Ellis said the group are having another crack this year. “To play on the same stage as Paul Kelly and Grinspoon – that would be pretty cool,” he said. “Hopefully if we win, we get to meet them too – actually, even if they don’t let us meet them, I’ll find a way to stay back stage until they come.” Geoff said performing at the festival would not only help the winning local band secure future gigs, it would also be like a badge of honour. “It gives lesser known local talent the chance to put their hand up and say, ‘I think I am good enough to perform on such a large scale’,” Geoff said. “For [my band Vincent Law], it would show that we were able to perform under this kind of pressure – well that depends on if we play any good of course.” Band entries into the Best of the North West competition close on Monday August 12 with finalists then selected to compete in a battle of the bands type event on August 22. Birds of Tokyo headline REAF By Ben Leahy

20% off Paradise Planning Wedding Package for 2014 Fully customised Ceremony & Reception Conditions apply. Must book by 31st of August 2013. www.broomeweddings.com

Aussie pop rockers Birds of Tokyo are set to headline a Red Earth Arts Festival that returns this September 6-21 with more acts than ever before. Tickets to all REAF events go on sale this Tuesday August 6 with Birds of Tokyo to play the closing set at the festival’s finale concert on September 21. Rising Fremantle Indie pop act San Cisco will be supporting Birds of Tokyo, who this year released a breakthrough number one album featuring tracks “Lanterns” and “This Fire”. Rock band The Medics will also take to the stage in the two-week festival, while Indigenous company Ochre and local group Deck Arts will give dance performances and Peter Helliar and Claire Hooper entertain with stand up comedy gigs. Families will be able to visit attractions, such as the dinosaur zoo and Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, while the Spiegel Tent returns with Burlesque shows, Rock N Roll Karaoke and more. Full festival details can be found on REAF’s website listed below. Yet, with the opening acts still a month away, there are ways to get involved in the festival now – including shaking your booty Latin American-style. The Pilbara Samba Band will be attempting to create a carnival atmosphere at REAF’s September 21 finale concert as they rove through the crowds playing lively samba beats. Having recently performed at the Cossack Art Awards, the group’s next rehearsal is Friday August 23 and is open to all community members – no musical experience necessary. But if your booty ain’t one to move, another way to prepare for REAF is by digging through your trash. Entries are now open for the 2013 Consumed Recycled Art Competition, which encourages residents to create art out of waste materials.

All Consumed entries are then exhibited in September as part of REAF. Accomplished artist Cath Cresswell, who created the Footprints public art sculptures at the Youth Shed, is among the competition’s first entrants after she finished her piece, called Trojan Horse. Cath’s Trojan Horse sculpture-cumcoffee-table is made from an old computer that she first pulled apart on the lounge room floor. It was while examining the disassembled pieces – and ignoring her husband’s curses at standing on stray computer screws – that the inner cables reminded her of a horse’s tail. With the further idea of Trojan viruses invading computers and some nifty work with a hot glue gun, Cath then reassembled the pieces to look like a horse. And, in case you were wondering why the computer was ever pulled apart in the first place, it wasn’t because it had been infected with a virus. “No it was just old age that killed it, it was too slow,” Cath said. And that has her wondering if a new name for her artwork might be more appropriate. “I guess, it was more of a donkey than a horse,” she said. Visit www.reaf.com.au and the Pilbara S a m b a Band and Karratha Community Association Facebook p a g e s for more information on the events listed above.

Nameless Festival to spark community spirit By Tamara Binamat The Nameless Jarndunmunha Festival is back on again, and locals and visitors to Tom Price will experience an amazing line up of events starting from Wednesday. The Festival takes its name from Mount Nameless/Jarndunmunha, meaning ‘place of rock wallabies’ known by the Eastern Guruma people, traditional land owners of the area surrounding Tom Price. The not-for-profit annual event is run by volunteers, and has been running since 1971. Peter Foster from the Nameless Jarndunmunha Festival Committee said the group hopes the whole community will get involved. “We encourage all local residents, including those in our nearby Aboriginal communities and Paraburdoo, to come visit and enjoy the Festival with us,” he said. “Every year we endeavour to make the Festival as inclusive as possible to entertain the whole community. “We have children’s performers such as Peppa Pig, and The Mik Maks for the younger children. “On Saturday, for the adults, we have [bands] Radio Active, Beside Lights, and a commonly requested act by locals, Stone Circle, to dance the night away.” Those who can’t wait for the headline acts can get in early on Wednesday August 7 when the airing of the quilts and art exhibition opens. Head along to Doug Talbot Park and the Community Centre for a night of light entertainment with music by Sophie Jane Thompson. Jundi the festival mascot will make his debut before hopping along to the art awards on Thursday. The Art Awards, held at the Community Centre, will kick off at 6:30pm and always

A highlight will be the Tom Price Has Got Talent show, which starts at 6pm at the main stage. And if that is not enough talent for you be sure to check out teen singing sensation Reece Masten straight after the fireworks. “The Nameless Jarndunmunha Festival are thrilled to bring Reece Mastin to Tom Price to entertain our town,” Cr Foster said. “The Reece Mastin concert is targeted towards our youth who enjoy the Festival just as much as the adults.” The youth concert will be free for all and wraps up Friday’s festivities from 8:15pm. Saturday will be the day to make sure the whole family gets out. With appearances from Peppa Pig, The Mik Maks and a fashion parade, the juniors will be well catered for. For some more singing and dancing, be sure to catch the Tom Price Choir performance, Polynesian dancers and another heat for Tom Price Has Got Talent on the Saturday. To cap off the festival, mum and dad will be able to rock out with Stone Circle, an alternative rock band, headlining an 18+ concert. Pilbara Girls ramp it up for the final catwalk

Bethany Flann

By Ben Leahy Having spent the past week perfecting their public speaking and runway style, ten young Indigenous women last night took to the catwalk for the Pilbara Girl finals in Karratha. Part beauty-pageant and fashion parade, Pilbara Girl is designed to help Indigenous women aged 16-to25-years-old build their confidence. With the finale fashion parade concluding after the Pilbara Echo went to print, all the photos and results will be covered in next week’s paper. However, earlier in the week, the Echo spoke to Karratha’s Erica Lippett, who was one of ten finalists from the Pilbara Girl heats in Hedland and Roebourne. For Erica, Pilbara Girl was a chance to challenge herself after hearing good reports from her friend and last year’s winner LisaMarie Rodd. “Lisa-Marie told me it was so much fun, and that she met so many good people,” 17-year-old Erica, said. “For me it was a big thing about confidence – I didn’t have much confidence, but I can see the difference in myself after only a few days [of Pilbara Girl workshops].” With last year’s winner LisaMarie hoping to model in New York next month, Erica said she is keen to also take any opportunities that might open up as a result of being a Pilbara Girl finalist. Yet, for the moment, she is still learning how to cope with the nerves of speaking in public. “The hardest [part of Pilbara Girl] I’ve got to say is talking to the media and the judges – it is very nerve racking having the judges sit

Erica Lippett

there watching you and waiting for an answer,” she said. As part of the competition, the girls are asked what they would put back into the community if they won Pilbara Girl. Unlike the better known Miss Universe pageant entrants, Erica has a more focused mission than delivering world peace. “I would have the Pilbara’s young girls and boys sit around and listen to the stories and dances of the elders because [our culture] is slowly fading away,” Erica said. “I think it needs to be rebuilt [among the young people so it] stays alive in the community.” And despite her Pilbara Girl success, Erica is planning on a career in sport rather than modelling. The talented basketball and netball player hopes to study physiotherapy at university or undertake certificates in sport and recreation once her Year 12 studies finish this year. That might not lead her to a fashion runway, but it could well make her a future role model.

Q: My partner and I live in Karratha and we want to buy an investment property in Perth, but we are nervous about having to rely on a property manager when we can’t keep an eye on the property ourselves. Do you have any advice? Jillian, Pegs Creek A: You raise a very important point because effective property management is a crucial step in the investment process to ensure your property is achieving the best possible returns. Many investors do fall short when it comes to finding the right property manager. But don’t worry because there are plenty of excellent property managers and with research you can find one you trust. When looking for a property manager, consider these tips. • Consult with friends and family for recommended property managers, who have provided excellent and consistent service. • Research a couple of property management companies and check how long they have been in operation, how many properties they manage and where the properties are located. • Carefully review the Fee Schedule and compare it to industry rates. Sometimes property managers offer a very competitive rate but there are plenty of other hidden costs and charges. • Ask who will be responsible for the day-to-day management of your property. You don’t want to deal with the manager only to find the management of your property has been handed over to an inexperienced junior. • What is their process for marketing the property, checking the suitability of prospective tenants and the collection process for rental arrears? • Check if you will have any input into the tenant selection process for your property. And in the event of a worst-case scenario, make sure your property manager is willing to go to court on your behalf and check their success rate for any previous cases. The more questions you ask, the more easily you will be able to identify a professional, who is right for the job.

• New rental prices are paving the way for more affordable housing in the North West

Affordable housing a near possibility Rental properties in Port Hedland and the Pilbara are becoming more affordable and easier to find, according to figures released by the Pilbara Development Commission’s June Quarter Housing and Land Snapshot. The figures show all three major Pilbara towns experienced a drop in average advertised weekly rental cost, with Port Hedland leading the way in residential property availability. Advertised residential properties for rent in Port and South Hedland jumped 37 per cent to a combined 401 from the March 2013 quarter to

mark an all-time high. Mining and Pastoral Region Jacqui Boydell MLC said the Nationals WA would continue to lobby for rent and sale prices to reduce. “It’s finally good to see some affordability starting to return, although they are still high in general so there is a way to go yet,” she said. “I commend the efforts of Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls in spearheading the Pilbara Cities vision to promote population growth and working with LandCorp to ensure this goal can be achieved.” Median property

rental and sale prices in the Pilbara cities are still double the average in Perth, but Ms Boydell said the new figures indicatively paved the way toward more affordable all-round housing in the North West. The average advertised weekly rent price in Port Hedland is the lowest since the September 2011 quarter, Karratha’s dropped for the seventh consecutive quarter to $1,285 and in Newman 33 residential properties were advertised for rent, the highest in a year. Pilbara Cities’ population targets plan for cities of 50,000 in Karratha and Port and South

Art awards a boon for local artists and tourism By Ben Leahy Prize-winning artist Caspar Fairhall last week shared tricks of his trade in a series of workshops held as part of the Cossack Art Awards. The Perth-based artist first guided school students through exercises designed to help them paint invisible objects, before taking adult classes focused on techniques for using colour. Caspar, who won the Cossack Art Awards 2012 overall prize and 2013 invited artists category, said the workshops helped locals gain an insight into how an artist might work. And, surprisingly, this usually meant imposing rules on oneself. “You tend to think of creativity as being this wide open rather chaotic messy thing, which it is, but by providing constraints you can channel that towards a goal,” he said. Caspar’s adult classes highlighted this when he asked them to create an abstract work using only the shape of rectangles and variations in colour, tone and texture. “Using those very simple means, [we explored] how you can create a work that is strong and balanced and visually interesting?” Caspar said, likening it to Tweeting.

“Professional writers often advocate using Twitter as a tool to learn to write in a very concise way,” he said. “The same is true of art, you want … maximum impact with minimum means.” Caspar’s workshops with school students took a different angle as they explored the idea of painting invisible objects. An example by one of the students was to do a series of sketches focused on sound in which they first drew it as a music speaker before finally representing it in the form of waves.

Joan Sivyer and her husband Bruce from Mandurah regularly holiday on the North West Coast and have now visited three Cossack awards exhibitions.

Yet they decided to stay an extra night once they heard about the Roebourne Races.

“I thought the artworks were brilliant – definitely on a par, if not better, than last year’s exhibition,” Joan said.

Having had a good time at the races, Pam and her friend Judy Prain decided to stay one more day and check out the art exhibition, while their husbands fished from the Cossack boat ramp.

By contrast, Pam and Col Widows from Gippsland in Victoria had planned to pass

“We were coming for one day, and we’ve been here three,” Pam said.

Caspar also took the workshop participants to see artworks currently being exhibited as part of the Cossack Awards. “There [normally] isn’t an art museum or even an art gallery in the area … so with the awards [being on] they are able to see a wide variety of approaches,” he said. And it wasn’t just local artists benefiting from the buzz created by Cossack Awards last weekend. Much like one of Caspar’s classes, the invisible concept of tourism suddenly became visible through the presence of gaggles of c o ff e e - s i p p i n g grey nomads and

Funny Guys take on the Pilbara By Tamara Binamat Nationally famous comedian Fiona O’Loughlin will be hitting the red dust on her way to the Pilbara this week as part of the Funny Guys Comedy Tour with Brad Oakes.

O G M T L 4 L A B GLO

Irish-born Fiona is wellknown for her stand up comedy and television appearances on shows such as Rove Live, Good News Week and Spicks and Specks. Fiona is also a regular on the national comedy tour circuit, and often tours with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Fiona says that

she started her comic career later in life, as a mother of five from Alice Springs. She earnt the Best Newcomer award at the 2001 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and has been enjoying sell-out success since. But it hasn’t always been an easy road for Fiona, with her much-publicised drinking problem hitting the headlines after falling asleep on stage at a show in Brisbane. Now sober, Fiona uses her life experiences as content for her show and has been dubbed the funniest working mother in

Australia. Fiona will be supported by Australian comedy veteran Brad Oakes, who has been doing the rounds since 1989. His dry, cynical humour complements Fiona’s workingclass style, and his battle with obesity will surely come into play when he steps on the stage. Brad is well-respected in the industry and has featured on television shows Jimeoin, Full Frontal and Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

NUTRITION by April Butt

or an unbalance of the bacteria in your body. Restoring the balance in your digestive tract may be a helpful measure. You can achieve this by consuming cultured foods such as sauerkraut, kefir and other fermented vegetables or by using a probiotic supplement.

This week’s health condition in focus: Urinary tract infections and cystitis Ask anyone who has suffered a urinary tract infection or cystitis and I’m sure they would agree they would not wish the torture upon anyone! Cystitis is the medical term for inflammation of the bladder and this is usually caused by a bacterial infection in the urinary tract, commonly termed UTI. This occurs when bacteria migrate up the usually sterile environment of the urethra and adhere to

the walls of the tissue. Once comfortable the bacteria begins to grow and populate at high numbers, which causes irritation to the area resulting in symptoms such as pain, a burning sensation with urination, frequent urination and cloudy urine. Women experience UTIs much more frequently than men, with 11 per cent of women experiencing a UTI in any given year and 50 per cent experiencing one at some stage in their life. Unfortunately this is due to the female

anatomy, where the urethra is shorter and also in close proximity to the anus where E-Coli (the most common cause of bacterial infection) resides and may migrate. There are many dietary and lifestyle measures that can assist in the prevention of this condition and ease the symptoms during an acute attack. Some include:

of

these

Correct bacterial balance - If you suffer from recurrent infections, this may be a sign of dysbiosis,

Minimised processed sugars - Sugary drinks, chocolate, lollies, icecream and many highsugar packaged food not only downplays your immunity, but sugar actually encourages bacterial growth, meaning they can populate with ease. Increase antimicrobial foods - Garlic, onion, leeks and ginger are foods that offer antibiotic qualities. They also increase circulation, meaning your immune cells and other helpful nutrients can flow freely around your body to offer support against infection. Consume berries - Half a cup of berries daily increases your levels of an antioxidant called anthocyanin.

An increased level of anthocyanin has been shown to prevent the development of a UTI and other bacterial infections. Do not use supermarket brand cranberry or other berry juice as a treatment method, these are high in sugars, which as mentioned earlier encourages bacterial growth. Increase fluids - By increasing your fluid intake, you increase the frequency that you urinate. The pH of the urine actually inhibits growth of bacteria as well as physically flushing the walls of the urethra making it harder for bacteria to adhere. Many herbal teas are helpful to increase water intake and alleviate symptoms. Possible Supplement D-Mannose is a simple sugar that comes in supplement form. This helps to inhibit bacteria, adhering to the wall of the urethra as it binds to the tissue creating a type of barrier. By doing this, the bacteria are unable to populate.

Te Ariki Waipouri and Amy Gray threw the second and third longest throws of the night. Some anglers only got to speak about them, while others actually tasted them. Terry Keogh was one of the lucky anglers that had fresh bluebone for dinner. These fish can be challenging as they run hard and bury themselves under rock ledges. A good strong leader of around 50-60lb can help land these fish, while braid or monofilament main line only needs to be about 8-10kg. Prawns work best for the blueys, although they have been snaffling jigs and soft plastics lately too. The better weather has helped calm the gulf and squid should be back on the chew now in this area. You can catch squid almost anywhere along the coastline in the gulf, but especially where the weed beds are. Some people have been trolling squid jigs behind their kayaks, which can be a great way to keep fit and have a healthy dinner. Sailfish and marlin have been continuing to show up around the west side, while at this time of year we expect the sailfish to start showing up in bigger numbers around the Ledge

fishing grounds, which are located off the Muiron Islands. If you want to troll lures for billfish and target the sails, we recommend trolling smaller lures and making sure your hooks are super sharp. Every time your lure is hit, you need to check the hook points and re-sharpen if needed with a good small diamond file. You can expect to catch other species out there too, such as yellowfin tuna, wahoo and dolphin fish. There have been plenty of wahoo and mackerel and dolphin fish lately.

Most people target the mackerel on deep diving lures. The new Strada super deep diving trakka lure that reaches 9m depths has been yielding great results for anglers, especially when the sun is high in the sky. Cath Johnstone is from the East Coast and is pictured this week with a ruby jobfish caught from deep waters off the west side. Cath was out with her husband Phil and he caught a rather good sized red emperor. Their son was also here and caught a pink snapper, along with other species during some great days out on the water.

Fame and Glory for junior soccer team By Natalie Gray Team Glory was the star of the latest round of Karratha District Junior Soccer as its U13s team sealed a seven-goal victory and its U17s kicked away for a five-goal win. In the 13s competition played at Pegs Creek, the Glory 2 beat Salt nine goals to two, while Glory 1 defeated Nickol 2. In the afternoon game at Dampier, Dampier and Nickol 1 played a thrilling game that ended in a two-all draw. Glory was also a big winner in the midweek 17s competition as they proved too strong for Nickol by 6 goals to one. In the Saturday game at Dampier, Nickol were able to turn around the mid week loss to run out comfortable winners over Dampier. A special mention goes to Scott Pritchard, who scored each of Nickol’s five goals.

Tennis West representative and coach Callum Ross recently visited the newly-refurbished tennis courts in Dampier to conduct a junior coaching clinic for Dampier’s young Roger Federers and Serena Williams. Coach Callum said it was great to see such a good turnout straight after the school holidays. “Tennis West is committed to the progression of tennis in our regional towns,” he said. “During this visit, I will be holding coaching clinics and the Hot Shots instructor course in Dampier, Karratha and Wickham. “It’s clear that there is a real need for coaches in this area, given the number of children we have had turning up to the clinics.” Vice-president of the Dampier Tennis Club Trish McQuade said the club was looking for a new coach so they could play in town rather than travelling to Karratha.

“We lost our local tennis coach last year, so we are currently on the lookout for a new coach to continue with the good work that the previous one put in,” she said. Trish added that the club was thrilled by coach Callum’s visit. “It really does make a difference to our community when we have representatives of a State body including us on their calendar,” she said. “We had a great turnout and all of the children had an absolute ball, while learning new tennis skills. “[Their smiles got even bigger] when coach Ross handed out Hot Shots caps hats. “We look forward to hosting more events of this nature in the future and would like to thank Tennis West and coach Callum for [dropping by].” If anyone is keen to coach the Dampier players, they can contact the club on their Facebook page Dampier Tennis Club or email dampiertennisclub@hotmail.com. au.

Greatwall Of China takes home the Roebourne Cup By Nigel Weston Greatwall Of China showed his class with an outstanding win in the $40,000 Ibis Styles Roebourne Cup (2200m) at The Nor West Jockey Club last Saturday. The Peter Dellar trained eight-year-old treated his rivals with contempt, and he will now be set for the $100,000 Broome Cup on August 17. In front of a healthy crowd, Indamani led the field by two lengths, however, Greatwall Of China, was in a perfect position in fifth place, only a few lengths off the pace. Jockey Andrew Masters made his move very quickly about 800m from home and from there he always looked the winner. In the home straight, Greatwall Of China showed no signs of stopping and he dashed away for a comfortable two length win. First Hit was the surprise of the race, running second after sustaining a solid run from about the 1,000m mark. Rosini ran home from a long way back to finish third

and will be hard to beat in The Port Hedland Cup on August 5, while locally trained, The Cat, fought on hard and clawed into fourth place. Indamani was slightly disappointing after getting a reasonably easy run in front, but was not too far away in 5th. All horses in The Port Hedland Cup breathed a sigh of relief knowing that Greatwall Of China is heading to Broome. Peter Dellar wrapped up The Nor West Jockey Club Trainer of The Year award after Incoherent won the $20,000 Gold-Settlers Sprint (1,200m). Although missing the start, Incoherent steadily made up ground and jockey, Kate Witten, saved many lengths around the corner and then sprinted away to just hold off the fast finishing, I’m Called Earl. Incoherent was also a clear cut winner in The Horse of The Year award, winning all his three races at Roebourne this season. The $10,000 Ibis StylesPublicans Purse (1600m) turned out to be a great spectacle for the crowd,

when four horses fought the race out with only a nose or two separating the four. Eye Of The Beetle snuck his nose out at the right time to just beat Surin and Unctuous. Stormish was the unlucky one to miss the place after looking the winner at stages and was only beaten by about half a head. A fifth horse, Rock Prince arrived on the scene only half a length away in one of the closest finishes seen for many years at The Roebourne Track. Apprentice jockey, Witten, rode three winners on the day after she brought home Impulsive Fighter in the $9,000 Jolly Good Auto Electrics Handicap (1100m). Impulsive Fighter dashed to the lead and showed no signs of stopping to win

Baked and Raised in the Pilbara

easily from Ieramugadu Two. Local trainer, Martin Hughes, deservedly got a winner on his club’s biggest day when Starline Porsche took out the $8,500 Pilbara Motor Group Handicap (1400m). In other news, Noel Rudland was awarded the Jockey of The Year award, although it proved only a small consolation after his current suspension cost him the chance to ride the Cup winning Greatwall Of China. For the Nor West Jockey Club, the Roebourne Cup marked a successful season in which it held three great race meets after the first one was washed out by the rain. Port Hedland will be hoping for an equally successful day with the running of the $40,000 Cup on Monday August 5.
