Karratha Police would like to once again remind everyone of the 40km/h zone around the CBD. The speed limit changed for safety reasons. These reasons include the fact that there is a heavy flow of local traffic going back and forth to the shopping centre, there is a large amount of pedestrian traffic around town and the slower we drive the less chance we have of an accident occurring.

The speed limit is 40km/h on Welcome Road due to the emergency vehicles entering the road in emergency situations.

Pilbara must find ways to secure benefits from floating LNG By Ben Leahy Federal Ministers believe future gas plants in the North West will be located on floating platforms out to sea rather than being built onshore, according to local Shire staff. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams recently met the Federal Resources Minister and his Opposition counterpart in Canberra and said he was advised to embrace offshore processing despite it being set to take royalties away from State and local government coffers. “The feedback we were getting is that [the future] onshore processing of gas would seem to be a long shot from the perspective of many of the Federal Government Ministers,” Adams said. “They think that floating LNG is a likely alternative moving forward, and their feedback to us was don’t fight this FLNG, it is likely to happen, find a way to make the most of it to generate economic development.”

most likely to use FLNG technology to process gas from the Browse gas fields, a move opposed by State Premier Colin Barnett.

• An artist’s impression of the floating LNG plant off the coast of WA

Opponents of FLNGs say they will not generate State Government royalties – potentially limiting programs, such as Royalties for Regions – and will take jobs and gas supply out of the economy. Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive officer John Lally said FLNG plants were a “disaster” for the Pilbara. “They will build [the floating plants] in Asia, and they will staff it with FIFO workers – they won’t need to staff it from here or even staff it with Australians,” Lally said. “Even though it might be possible to put transport and logistic hubs in [to supply the floating plants] the impact will be minimal compared to processing the gas on shore.”

The Ministers’ collective advice follow the decision by Woodside earlier this year to abandon plans to construct an onshore processing plant at James Price Point in the Kimberley.

But Shire CEO Adams said that while his local government strongly preferred onshore processing, it increasingly appeared this option is becoming economically unviable.

Woodside and its partners are now

Resources companies say the cost of

building onshore plants in Australia is up to 12 per cent more expensive than in Canada. Adams now hopes that if FLNGs become the preferred option, they will be formally encouraged to source local goods. “These major projects should be sourcing regional goods and services [from the North West] wherever possible, obviously noting that it has to be economically feasible for them,” Adams said. He added that Karratha with its 30-year experience dealing in oil and gas, its existing LNG infrastructure and its supply of available land at the Gap Ridge Industrial Estate was already successfully fulfilling this role. “Increasingly, Karratha has become the supply and logistics base for LNG projects in the North West,” Adams said. “[Now] we need to make sure that if and when the Sunrise and

Browse projects go to floating LNG, we can grow our supply chains and logistics base further [to be able to service these projects too].”

Liberal Senators launch 2030 Vision for Northern Australia in Karratha By Ben Leahy Federal and State Liberal Ministers launched the Coalition’s 2030 Vision for Developing Northern Australia in Karratha last weekend. Senator Ian Macdonald from Northern Queensland, WA Senator Alan Eggleston, and Liberal candidate for Durack Melissa Price headed the launch held at the Leisureplex on July 25. The 2030 Vision shares many national Coalition policies, such as abolishing the carbon emission trading scheme and mining tax and lessening environmental approvals regulations. However, it also calls for the greater development of agriculture, tourism, education and infrastructure in Northern Australia. Under the plan, the Coalition would establish a water development fund to build water projects, such as dams, a Cooperative Research Centre to foster collaborative studies and complete an infrastructure audit to determine the needs of Northern Australia. Yet Senator Alan Eggleston also said the 2030 Vision did not go into specific projects or details. “The point about this is it is not something that will happen over the

next year or so, it is a 20 or 50-year plan of ideas that can be implemented in the north,” he said. Instead, Senator Eggleston said the Coalition trip was more about listening and finding out the problems. He added that, if elected, the Coalition would commission a White Paper into developing Northern Australia that will report back within one-year. “A lot of emphasis in this plan is on irrigating agriculture to become a food bowl for Asia and its rising middle class,” Senator Eggleston said.

of those unique experiences.”

“And we believe the tourist industry could become very big indeed because people from around the world come to Australia to see unique and different things they have never seen before.”

However, Senator Eggleston was more reserved about expediting World Heritage Listing of the Burrup Peninsula and its rock art, a move that would likely give an instant boost to regional tourism.

“It is Northern Australia that has many

“The rock art there is absolutely unique

[and it] has to be preserved there at all costs,” Senator Eggleston said. “But dismantling the industry on the Burrup would cost billions of dollars.” “I’d have to look into what the implications of World Heritage Listing would be [before committing to it].”

Minister officially opens Baynton West Primary By Ben Leahy

Minister Collier also picked up on this theme.

Education Minister Peter Collier visited Karratha on July 24 to officially open the new Baynton West Primary School in a ceremony that also involved a dance performance by the students.

“The school has become the heart of this family-orientated area with the community working together since its inception,” he said.

As a school uniquely built at the same time as the suburb surrounding it, Baynton West’s principal Lisa Ledger attributed the school’s early success to its ability to make a strong connection with the community. “Certainly the facilities are brand new and that is fantastic and it is a great thing to have,” Ledger said. “But what makes the school is the community and the people who are part of it.” “And that includes our students, parents and staff who all contribute to make this a special place.”

“It has already used its Independent Public School status to employ a visual arts specialist and a health and physical education specialist.” Baynton West has 373 students and 13 general classrooms, three pre-primary classrooms, a library resource centre, art and craft room and music room. It also has award-winning teachers. Deputy principal Will Davis was named the National Primary Teacher of the Year in 2012 and principal Lisa Ledger was a finalist in the WA Education Awards Primary Principal of the Year 2011.

The Care group hosts its second major community litter cleanup this Sunday July 28. The cleanup will focus on a section of the North-West Coastal Highway between the Shell Roadhouse (Madigan Road) and the junction with Karratha Road. Care will kick off the cleanup with a short briefing for volunteers at 8am, which will be held at the Shell Roadhouse. For any sleepyheads that prefer a later start, you are welcome to turn up any time between 8-and-10am (there’ll be someone manning a stall at Shell Roadhouse).

Each bag of rubbish collected on the day will attract $6.00 for the 3rd Karratha Scouts Group. This is made possible by the Shire’s Bucks for Bags program. The Scouts will use the funds to help their members attend the Enduro camp in Perth this year. Come along and pick up a few bags (for as long or as short as you like), help cleanup our town’s local environment and support your local community. We look forward to your support on the day. Roebourne Visitor Centre aims at national and international visitors with new website Award-winning tourism organisation, the Roebourne Visitor Centre, will host an after-hours cocktail event on August 7 to celebrate the launch of their new website. The new website provides residents and tourists with all the information they need to know about activities and events in the region. Roebourne Visitor Centre manager Ruth Ellis said the site would be a big asset in promoting tourism in Roebourne. “The internet is a powerful tool for reaching audiences outside of the Pilbara, this new website will be a great tool for people who are planning a trip to the Pilbara Coast,” Ellis said.

“We want people to see the Shire of Roebourne area as a desirable holiday destination, rather than just a town between Coral Bay and Broome.” “ M i l l s t r e a m National Park offers an abundance of sightseeing opportunities and unique landscapes to discover.” “There’s also a rich and unique history to the town of Roebourne, a lot of which is … on display in the Old Goal Museum, which is home to the Roebourne Visitor Centre.” “We’ve managed to squeeze all this information [onto the website] alongside some stunning photographs.” The website also includes information on

accommodation, local facilities and businesses, as well as the best time of year to experience the Pilbara Coast. The event also coincides with the release of the new 2013-14 Pilbara Coast Holiday Planner, which was produced in partnership with the Karratha Visitor Centre for use by residents and tourist alike. “We were delighted to work alongside the Karratha Visitor Centre to again produce this valuable tourism tool,” Ms Ellis said. “The booklet is invaluable to tourists, but is also a great asset for residents who’d like to learn more about what’s on offer in their own backyard.”

Local road trip film raises $6,000 for Flying Doctors By Dave Peck and Ben Leahy The odd motorbike crash and the need to fly-in spare parts were just some of the adventures featured in locally produced film “A Heart of Mulga”, which screened at the Walkington Theatre last Saturday July 20. The film followed Karratha residents Dave Peck and Mick Tuthill as they rode their bikes through central Australia visiting remote communities and marveling at the beautiful landscapes and sunsets. Described by Dave as “a down-toearth Aussie road trip”, the film was a chance for the boys to escape the day-to-day rut and act as inspiration for others to get out there and experience a new adventure in life.

Mick and Dave said the film’s screening and DVD sales also raised nearly $6,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. “It wasn’t just about making a film for us, but, more importantly, it’s been about bringing the local community together in a fundraising effort for a very worthy cause,” Mick and Dave said. The DVD of the film is now currently for sale at selected Karratha businesses for $15 with all funds going to the RFDS. Dave extended his thanks to all the sponsors, who supported the project right from the start, with a special thanks going to Nancy Milligan and Matt Plummer from the Shire of Roebourne for their assistance with the film screening.

FAST AND FURIOUS 6 (M, Action, Run Time 130min)

A Dreamtime Drive By Tamara Binamat As a car decorated with artworks by Aboriginal people from across Australia makes its way through the Pilbara, the organisation behind the car’s journey bears a fitting name. It is called Red Dust. The two artists driving the car around Australia, Jessica Ward and Vanig Krikorin, are fundraising for Red Dust, which is an Indigenous organisation promoting health and health programs in schools. The car Jessica and Vanig are driving around Australia will later be auctioned off at the end of their trip with the proceeds to go directly to Red Dust. At each place Jessica and Vanig visit, they get local Aboriginal artists to add more artwork to the car. The duo started in Sydney before travelling to Queensland, Alice Springs, the Northern Territory, the Kimberley and now the Pilbara. They stopped at Roebourne Art Group on Monday July 22 where local artists Loreen Samson and Rosaline Diamond painted the sixteenth piece of artwork on the car. Jessica and Vanig will next head to Mount Magnet and South Australia before the trip ends in Melbourne where the car will be auctioned off at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Jessica said the artwork is a symbol of Indigenous culture. “It’s been brilliant and we’ve learnt a lot,” she said.

“One of the points of the trip was to learn about Indigenous culture.” Jessica and Vanig have many interesting tales to tell, including an unplanned extended stop in Arnhem Land. “We got trapped in Arnhem Land because all the roads were closed for some ceremonies,” Vanig said. “We were going to get our painting done but sorry business is a theme sometimes,” Jessica said. Loreen Samson is an award-winning artist with the Roebourne Art Group and said the inspiration for her Burrup rock art-style painting on the Red Dust car came from deep within her heart. “I paint about the Pilbara and all along the Burrup,” Loreen said. “[This is] a story we [will] carry on many years from now and was carried on from when our ancestors were around. “It’s a place of learning and teaching, our rock art. “[Our ancestors] didn’t go to schools, school was written on the land.

“This painting is about the stories of how the men climbed when European people came. “They were threatened and climbed the hills to get away. “That’s what they call climbing mens. “It’s always in my heart and I carry it on with me and I love painting about it.” Loreen’s painting for Red Dust features kangaroos, emus, emu tracks, hand marks, turtles, bush tucker and the climbing men. “I did marks of how I see it,” Loreen explained. “That’s always in my heart and what I paint is what I see, through my heart. “It was a voice I wanted to raise about the Burrup. “Our story is about our culture and the importance of our rock art. “We’re here and were trying to make our name and if [people] can’t hear us we’re going to shout it out.” For more about the Dreamtime Drive project and Red Dust, head to www.reddust.org.au.

Here are six tips for success: Get your 1. structure right – Speak to your accountant to find the most tax efficient structure to use to purchase your properties. Getting this right at the first stage can save you thousands. Many positive property investors have created large portfolios only to pay out huge fees down the track when they decide to change their entity structure for tax purposes. 2. Make an informed property purchase – Education and research is key. The town/area should provide a historical growth rate averaging 10 per cent a year over the last five to 10 years. A population that is trending upwards, a low rental vacancy rate, industrial growth and investment in infrastructure are all indications that demand for housing will remain strong. Buy in low to maximise your return. Identify temporary down cycles and

quiet seasonal periods which may offer opportunities to secure lower priced property. Fundamentally, the property should deliver positive cash flow of at least $400 a week. Maximise 3. your cash – Whether you are using equity in your home or a saved deposit for your first investment property, maximise your means to grow faster. Borrow 90 per cent and use Lenders Mortgage Insurance (required if your deposit is less than 20 per cent) to leverage your purchasing power and increase your flexibility. LMI is an acceptable and tax deductable method to get your portfolio started and growing. When your portfolio has generated sufficient equity you can start to buy properties with a larger deposit, without requiring LMI. 4. Purchase your second property quickly – Each property strengthens your financial position. Within 12 18 months of making

84

your first investment, use the equity now available in this property (which you will have created if you have invested in an area which has delivered 10-per-cent+ growth per annum) to buy a second. You may even find you have enough equity to buy a third. Using different lenders will give you greater flexibility and borrowing power – speak to a mortgage broker. 5. Regularly review your properties’ values and continue to build your portfolio as soon as your equity position allows you to – If your properties are increasing in value, you should not be using cash savings to fund deposits on further investments. You should be releasing equity from your existing properties to raise the required 10-20 per cent. Once you have five properties in your portfolio, depending on the growth rate in the area, you will have created a positive portfolio that is paying you in excess of $100,000 profit per annum. Review your 6. investment goals every six months – Revisit your goals on growth and continually reassess your passive return goals every six months. Adjust your strategy as necessary to keep you growing. Disclaimer This article is not financial

Ask Peter Peter Gianoli

General Manager Investor Assist

Q: I have recently inherited an older house on a large block, and I am considering sub-dividing the block and building two or more properties on it. I have not gone through this process before and was wondering the best place to start? Geoff, Nickol A: Your inheritance represents an exciting opportunity for you but developing the property is a task that should be undertaken with considerable thought and research, particularly if it is your first time. Outlined below are just a few of the preliminary points to consider. • What are the local council R-codes applicable to your block, and what is the maximum number of properties you can build on the block? • Depending on the location of your block and your target market, the highest use for the block may not necessarily be the best – you may need to run a few scenarios to see what will achieve the best returns. • Is the existing property on the block worth retaining? • How will you finance this process? Lenders have different criteria for investors and subdivision projects compared to owner occupiers, so don’t make any assumptions. • Do you plan to sell or lease the properties on completion? • Will you build single or doublestorey houses, and will it be a staged build? • What house designs are appropriate for the subdivision? •

What builder should you choose?

• Will you manage the process yourself or enlist the services of someone to help? At Investor Assist, we can help you through the entire process from start to finish and unlike many other companies, we do not charges you any upfront costs, charges, commissions or project management fees– our service is completely free of charge. I encourage you to seek reputable advice or contact one of our Property Investment Specialists, to discuss the options available to you.

Perth-based artist Lesley Munro has claimed the major prize at the 2013 Cossack Art Awards during a ceremony attended by 350 artists and invited guests last Saturday July 20. Munro earned praise from judges for her “sensitive investigation of line, space and colour” and additionally picked up a cheque for $15,000. But most crucially, Munro said the award reignited her self-belief after four-decades as an artist. “This Award has come at a time in my career when I was having some doubts about my work, so this award is a tremendous encouragement for me and my practice,” Munro said during her acceptance speech in Cossack. “I strongly encourage any artists with similar concerns to continue to make work and have faith that your endeavours and hard work may be rewarded and recognised, as mine have been tonight. Other winners included Perth artist Caspar Fairhall for Minecraft Sky in the Invited Artists category, Mark Tweedie for his portrait of Tim Draxl in the Portraits category and WA Indigenous Artist winner Loreen Samson for Through My Eyes of Shame. Five more artists also picked up prizes in separate categories in what is the richest regional arts award in Australia. And while many of the winning artworks have already been purchased by Cossack Awards sponsors, they remain on display with all the other 2013 entries as part of an exhibition that runs until August 11. Residents can visit the exhibition between 10am and 3pm daily as well as take part in upcoming workshops with artists, such as Caspar Fairhall. For more information phone Archipelago Arts on 9144 4024.

Art mixed with jumping castles proves a hit at Cossack fun day By Ben Leahy More than 5,000 people came out to enjoy themselves and admire beautiful artworks in historic 1800s-era Cossack during a family fun day held last weekend. Visiting Dorothy the Dinosaur and friends and Doopa Dog gave local children plenty to cheer about during the times when they weren’t leaping about in the jumping castle and getting their faces painted. The Pilbara Samba Band also performed an infectious SouthAmerican-inspired drum and dance routine, while Blues band Dudley and Cho and Cuban-Karratha resident Eliezer Aguila treated music lovers to a more soulful musical pace. The fun day was also the first day the prestigious Cossack Art Award pieces went on exhibition, giving art lovers with fat wallets the chance to purchase their favourite pieces.

Salsa into a more active lifestyle at the Leisureplex By Ben Leahy

PHOTOS: BEN LEAHY

Life gets busy at Karratha’s Leisureplex this week with the launch of a host of children’s programs ranging from junior boxfit and Masterchef to toddler language classes. But while most parents and their children are quick to discover any fun new activities that pop up in town, adults tend to be a bit lazier. Yet there is little excuse for vegging in front of the tube now that the Leisureplex is also launching a bunch of classes for adults. These include Lifeball, a non contact sport for all ages including the elderly, beauty and make-up classes and a FIFO Drop in Competition in which players don’t book ahead but just show up and play a muckup game of the sport they choose. The Shire of Roebourne’s acting director of Community Services said Leisureplex staff had been asking locals since May what sports or programs they wanted to see running. “We received a lot of fantastic ideas,” Bev said. “We also had a number of people approach us with an idea that we were [then] able to help them develop into a program.”

Leisureplex personal trainer and aqua aerobics teacher Anita McDonald was one of those, who quickly found herself signed up as an instructor. “I was working in a crèche, and when I gave [the Leisureplex staff] my qualifications, they realised I was a personal trainer and aqua qualified and they were instantly like, ‘Come here we need to talk to you’,” Anita said with a laugh. She added that aqua aerobics is great because you can actually get fit without even knowing it. “It really is a lot of fun and everyone that comes down always has a good time and we kind of distract them while they are getting fit,” she said. Venezuelan Karratha resident Yarianny Chinchilla is another new instructor at the Leisureplex. She posted a message in Facebook asking whether anyone wanted to learn how to do salsa that was seen by Leisureplex staff, who then invited her to teach the classes at the sports complex. Yari, like other instructors, now gets paid a wage by the Shire of Roebourne and also gets the chance to learn how to teach a program she is passionate about. “If you go to Venezeula you can see the children dancing, it is part of our culture and I am

really happy to show that to people here [in Karratha],” Yari said. “It is my passion, dancing is my passion.” And when it comes to a choice between dances, such as samba and salsa, there is no question in Yari’s mind which she prefers “In Salsa you need to be in contact, that feeling with a partner – can I say that?,” shewsaid with a laugh. “It is a sexy dance.” For more information on the kids and adult programs call the Leisureplex on 9186 8556 or visit www.karrathaleisureplex. com.au.

running at the Bulgarra Oval from August 3-4.

8.30am on August 3 one of the festival highlights.

Karratha’s annual FeNaClNG Festival is set to go off with a bang this year as old-school pop rockers Boom Crash Opera headline the event’s Saturday night concert.

FeNaClNG will also feature more than 100 stalls, sideshow rides and community activies, such as a tug of war, fitness class and show by Paintstormer, who turns painting into a high-energy performance.

The floats seem to get more creative each year with prizes awaiting the teams that whip up the best decorations.

The Melbourne band that made their name through the 1980s and ’90s will be joined by soul Singer Jade MacRae and more than a dozen other acts during the two-day festival

But despite having steadily grown over the years, FeNaClNG still retains the spirit of a town fair, which makes the annual float parade departing at

Now in its 41st year, the event will again be the main fundraising activity for the local Lions Club of Karratha and Dampier with its annual popularity highlighted by a crowd of 40,000 turning out for the event in 2006.

Bush campers can inspect new campervan models this FeNaClNG By Ben Leahy Pilbara residents looking to escape for a break in the bush have the chance to do some research at this weekend’s FeNaClNG Festival. The Western Australia dealer of Easy Offroad, which makes off road camper trailers, is bringing three of its favourite models up. According to Kyran Florrison from Easy Offroad, the campers are suited to the Pilbara as they are capable of tackling 4WD tracks far from the beaten paths. “Our campers rated highly in the testing for Camper

Trailer Australia Offroad Camper of the Year Awards 2013,” Florisson said. “They proved to be comfortable and durable in heavy-duty off-road camping areas.” “We will be showing the Pilbara community [at FeNaClNG] the Kakadu soft-floor, Exodus 14 hybrid and the Fraser hard-floor models.” Easy Offroad campervans, such as their Jabiru model, include foldable tent shells, hot water, gas cookers and fridges and the ability to climb over rugged and corrugated roads.

Wildlife Watch: Little Eagle

Raw Hire to give away meaty prize for FeNaClNG

0438 924 842 www.pwca.org.au Fish are sometimes stolen from Haliastur sphenerus (Whistling Kite). They hunt by gliding, stillhunting from a perch, or by soaring and quartering an area. They do not often take prey in flight. Despite being unable to carry a catch larger than 500 g, they will kill rabbits as heavy as 1.5 kg. Breeding displays consist of calling and near-vertical dives of around 50-60 m. The breeding season is from March-September in the north and August-October in the south. The nest is made out of sticks and lined with green leaves and both parents contribute to the nest building. The nest can be up to 60-70 cm across and 30-60 cm deep and it is placed 5-45 m high in the fork of a tree, usually in open woodland or along a watercourse. 1-3, usually 2 eggs are laid and incubated by the female for 33-41 days. Fledging takes 54-56 days and the young are dependent on their parents for around two months after that. Little Eagles are widespread and considered common throughout Australia, but their population is declining. Threats include habitat destruction, urban expansion, and poisoning from rabbit baiting. They are classified as Vulnerable in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), are under review in Victoria, and Vulnerable status has been proposed in New South Wales.

Everyone loves a good meat tray raffle, especially when it involves farm fresh meat supplied to you for the next four months. Pilbara-based vehicle hire company Raw Hire is supporting the annual FeNaClNG Festival this August 3-4 by raffling a meaty prize with their Raw Meat Raffle. Larger than your classic meat raffle, ticket holders will be in with a chance to win four months of meat, valued at $800, with over $1,600 of prizes to be won. Mukinbudin farmers Muka Meats, who deliver across the North West, will supply the four prizes in the raffle.
All funds raised by the raffle will be donated directly to Lifeline WA. Raw Hire is hoping to raise $4,000, topping the donation made in 2012.

Raw Hire director Sean Clarke said the company was proud to be involved with the festival again in 2013. “The FeNaCING Festival is a big event in Karratha and we’re proud to have been part of it for many years,” he said. “We like to change the game or competition we hold each year at the festival. “One year, we filled a car with balls as a guessing game and we also gave away a BMW for the day.” “We are looking forward to the reaction to the meat tray, [which will be] set up in the back of one of our utes.” “It will be a great prize to win.”
Raw Hire has also assisted the festival with vehicle hire for entertainers over the weekend.

Aquila morphnoides are the world’s smallest eagles. They have two morph forms that live in Australia and New Guinea in wooded habitat. There are two morph forms of Little Eagles: a pale morph and a dark morph, in addition to individual plumage variation. Pale morphs have brown upperparts, a redbrown head, light-colored underside, and black barring on the wingtips, along with a gray band across the wing coverts and scapular feathers. The less common dark morphs have dark brown upperparts and head and a light brown to brown underside. Both the pale and dark morph forms have black streaking on the head and a shoulder band, barred tail, and slight crest. The eyes are yellow- to

orange-brown and the cere is blue-white, as are the feet. The legs are feathered along the leg down to the bird’s ankle; that is why Little Eagles are considered “true” or “booted” eagles. Little eagles are 44-45 cm in length, with a wingspan of 100-136cm. They weigh 440-815gms. Juveniles pale morphs are more rufous than adults, and dark morphs are darker in color with narrow barring on the chest. Eyes are dark brown. A Little Eagle’s call is a loud whistle repeated 2-3 times. They occupy wooded habitats including open forest, woodland, scrub, gallery forest, and savanna. They are most common in woodland along rough hilly country and they avoid dense forest. Their altitudinal range is from 0-1,500 meters above sea level in Australia, though they have been recorded as high as 2,100 m in New Guinea. They live in Australia and New Guinea, from 2°S to 29°S. Adults are irruptive or local migrants, but juveniles disperse from breeding areas and have been known to travel 3,000 km once they are no longer dependent on their parents. There are approximately 10,000-100,000 individuals across their range. Little Eagles eat mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fish, and carrion. Young rabbits are preferred prey in the south part of their range and birds in the north, and lizards are often caught in arid habitat.

The Company has now intersected a broad zone (193m) of sulphide mineralisation containing disseminated copper sulphides and narrower zones of massive sulphides containing copper. The Top Up Rise gravity anomaly has the characteristics of an Iron Oxide Copper Gold

RnB and soul singer Jade MacRae has been in and out of the Australian music scene since 2002 and climbed the music charts with her ARIA Award-winning hit single So Hot Right Now in 2005.

Recently MacRae has focussed her time on a new project called Dune.

MacRae will be headlining Karratha’s FeNaClNG festival concert on Sunday August 4, right before the locally famous closing ceremony fireworks. MacRae said she is looking forward to an amazing concert, and exploring the region. “I’ve been to WA quite a few times but never to the Pilbara region before,” she said. “I’m looking forward to learning more about the local culture and

Dune will be MacRae’s first selfproduced project and is a big step in a new sonic direction, performing with synthesizers while singing live. “It’s still a new project but I’m really excited about where it might go – it’s a lot more avant garde than my previous releases,” MacRae said. “I’ve been lucky enough to do a great variety of things over the years – including getting to travel all around the world writing and recording. “Being able to travel and discover places as a musician means you get right to the heart of a place, very different from being a tourist somewhere. “I recently did my first international gigs with Dune in the UK, which was a trip that was crowd-funded.

In 2012 MacRae voiced the character of Cynthia on the soundtrack for The Sapphires. MacRae said she will be performing a Sapphires-style set in Karratha, and the audience can expect lots of soulful Motown-era music. But no matter what style of music she sings, MacRae said she is passionate about them all. “The Dune sound is quite futuristic, synth-based pop music, but I have a long history with soul-based music too, and jazz,” she said. “I basically love music in all its forms, especially good song writing. “I’m also looking to record an album of jazz standards with my dad who is a brilliant pianist and I’ve always wanted to make an album with him.” MacRae fans can look forward to the release of the first full Dune album this year.

Eighties and nineties rock band Boom Crash Opera are set to impress fans when they headline FeNaClNG festival’s Saturday night concert. Peter Farnan, Dale Ryder, Peter Maslen, Greg O’Connor and Ian Tilley will perform all their hits such as Onion Skin, Dancing in the Storm, Great Wall and Hand Up in the Air. Formed in 1984, the band reached their heyday in the late eighties, with their most successful record to date Theses Here Are Crazy Times released in 1989. Theses Here Are Crazy Times featured top ten single Onion Skin, and spent more than 12 months in the Australian Top 40 music charts, achieving double platinum sales. Maslen said in the 30 years the band car been together, travelling overseas and recording with famous producers is always a highlight for him. Maslen said Boom Crash Opera worked with Jimmy Iovine early in his career, who is now famous as the music producer on reality TV show American idol. “We even had Robert Plant come in and crash our recording session once in London,” Maslen said. “He knew our producer - he was just sort of listening, he didn’t say a lot.” Maslen is also a session drummer and has played for many notable artists including Archie Roach, Jimmy Barnes, Icehouse, Men at Work and The Seekers. These days, Maslen is the drummer for Mark Seymor’s band Mark Seymor and the Undertow.

Boom Crash Opera members all have their own individual projects they are working on, but still get together for live performances. The band is releasing a greatest hits album called The Best Things, and a rarities called The Lost Things soon after their FeNaClNG performance. Maslen said the band members, now aged in their fifties, are looking forward to coming back to the Pilbara. “Any opportunity to come up that way, we take it for sure,” he said. “It’s just great. The weather is amazing. “Anywhere North West Australia for us southerners is a destination like paradise.”

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report

pilbaraecho www.pilbaraecho.com.au

St Luke’s take to Bulgarra Ovals for school carnival Perfect conditions greeted St Luke’s College students as they jumped into their school sports day at Bulgarra Oval last Thursday July 25.

By Jenni Gates Did I jinx the weather? Last week I wrote how good it was, and no sooner did it turn ugly. Yes, the howling easterlies have hammered Exmouth this week and cold winter temperatures blowing in off the desert have been felt by many of us as we rug up and head outdoors. The strength of the winds has kept many boating anglers ashore and one comment was: ‘You really know it’s windy when you are looking at the ocean from your car and your car is rocking!’ Hopefully it will return to stable Exmouth winter weather this week. Before the winds came in hard there were plenty of reports of outstanding catches from anglers, including Tina Willis who had her first time in Exmouth and had no idea how much fun it would be. She and her partner Brendon Shinnick brought up their new 4.9m aluminium boat and caught wahoo, amberjack, red emperor, Spanish mackerel, tuna and all sorts. The highlight of the trip for them was raising four marlin, hooking two of them and landing one of them. Tina is pictured this week with some of the many fish she caught. All fish except the red emeperor were released and Tina wanted to

say a big thank you to Exmouth for their best fishing trip ever. The whiting have been showing up further south in the gulf this year, and if you don’t mind the cold mornings before the sun rises, the whiting tend to bite well at this time of day when the tide is high. There have been some people trying various lures and soft plastics, but the good old prawn seems to be the winner with our Exmouth whiting. If you have the opportunity to get out on a boat to fish there is so much more too see off Exmouth. This last week we have had anglers reporting everything from whalesharks and whales to orcas, turtles, sunfish, big sharks, dolphins, jumping mackerel and manta rays. We really do have a waterwonderland here with so many different things to see. Catching a fish, is merely a bonus to going out on the water fishing. Brave diving enthusiasts have been pulling out the thermal rashies and thick westsuits, hoods, gloves, booties and extra towels this week for diving trips. The reports in from divers in waters around 25-30m say that there are trout everywhere.

The students participated in all the traditional track and field sports but the biggest smiles seemed to always be on those battling it out in the entertaining tug of war contests.

Mountain bikers boost their skills By Ben Leahy Karratha’s junior and senior mountain bikers pushed themselves to new limits as they practiced their cornering, drop offs and jumps in a series of clinics held last weekend. Riders Mark Wardle and Ben McGrath from Perth-based Rock and Roll Mountain Biking Tours held seven skills clinics during their two-day visit to the Pilbara as guests of the local Burrup biking club. Their most jampacked clinic involved instructing a horde of young Dirtmaster riders aged under-12 in how to control their bikes during braking and cornering and how to complete log rollovers. They also took fundamentals and advanced clinics for ladies and men that focused on correct cornering and use of gears when climbing and techniques for riding berms and descending rocky drops. In the final Freeriders clinic, the guys taught techniques for tackling bigger obstacles, such as rocky descents, bridge drop offs and jumps. Now in his second year visiting the Pilbara, Mark Wardle said local riders had made big strides in the past 12-months. “All facets of mountain biking seem to have gone to another level in Karratha in terms of the number of riders, the skills of the riders and also the quality of the trails,” Mark said. “It blew me away when we were shown all the work that the club has been doing [building and grooming] their trails.” Mark said two fundamental skills stood out in their importance over the course of the clinics. With the dreaded front wheel washout being an ever-present threat in the Pilbara’s loose rocky terrain, Mark said a big focus was placed on cornering. • Competitors were put through their paces at the skills clinic

“By the end, we were getting everyone

Port of Call

looking well ahead, getting their pedals right, their weight right and that was fantastic to see,” Mark said. He said the proper use of gears when climbing was also highly important. Whereas Perth trails tend to be more gradual in their climbs and descents, the bumpy Pilbara hills mean local trails are constantly going up and down. To practice this, Mark took the ladies clinic to a steep climb with two sharp switchbacks on loose, slippery trails. “Every lady in the clinic said ‘Oh, I’ve never ridden that’ or ‘There’s no way I can do that’,” Mark said. “But after showing them how to use their gears properly and the correct climbing techniques, every single lady made it up to the final switchback, which was unbelievable.” The riders attempting the jumps and sharp drop offs in the advanced Freeriders clinics also pushed themselves to new levels. “At the end of the class every single rider put up their hand to say they had ridden an obstacle or part of a trail or feature that they had never ridden before,” Mark said. He added that even he and fellow instructor Ben had a blast tackling the blind corners and boulder-strewn technical descents from the hills behind the Leisureplex. And it seems such trails are earning Karratha a growing reputation in the mountain biking world. Mark is keen to come up in 2014 to race in the Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s feature six hour event after the Perth riders, who competed this year, went home “raving about it”. “That bodes well for next year because once word gets around that an event is well run, well organised and in a great location it inspires others to put it on their calendar,” he said.

North West juniors compete against Australia and the world’s best AFL players By Clint Degebrodt The NAB AFL National Under 16s Championships were held during the first week of the school holidays at Blacktown International Sports Park in Sydney’s West and featured seven Pilbara players representing their state for the first time. The WA North West competed in division 3 of the championships and was made up of players from the Pilbara, Kimberley and Gascoyne. After winning the division 3 title in their first year in the competition last year, the WA North West team entered the 2013 tournament with high hopes. And the Pilbara boys from the red dust played their part with Brayden Hackett, Campbell Garratt, Anno Widders, AJ Lockyer, Tim Narrier, Jonny Shaw and Vincent Adams all playing well throughout the carnival. During the tournament the WA North West played three matches against the World XVIII, Flying Boomerangs and South Pacific teams in what is considered the “development” competition. Unfortunately for the Pilbara boys and their

teammates, game one saw the World XV111 10.15 (75) def WA NW 10.6 (66). WA North West’s poor first quarter proved costly for the boys and they weren’t able to make it back despite finishing strongly. They had managed to reel in a 37 point deficit by the 12 minute mark of the last quarter only to fall away in the final minutes to the miss the win by just nine points. The goals were evenly spread in this match and the best included Pilbara boys Vincent Adams and Jonny Shaw. The second game involved a better preparation and a better result with WANW 23.16 (154) defeating the Flying Boomerangs Indigenous team 4.8 (32). Major goal kickers for WA North West included Aaron Birch with 6, Elijah Howard’s 5, and Sam Petera bagged 4. Best players were Brayden Hackett, Sam Petera, Sam Seton, Kieren Ard, Robert Simons and Aaron Birch. The week also finished well against the South Pacific as WANW 111 defeated South Pacific 32. Aaron Birch kicked 6 goals, while Robert Simons, Aaron

Birch, Vincent Adams, Cam Garratt, Shae Butler and AJ Lockyer were the team’s best players. Sam Seton was not only presented with the WA North West MVP award, but he was also named best & fairest for the entire division 3. As well as the games, the week included professional coaching and mentoring and a focus on living live like a professional athlete. This included using AFL team Greater Western Sydney’s facilities to live the life of a professional sports person by following the correct diet, recovery and elite athlete preparation. But it wasn’t all hard work for the boys as they also took in the Sydney sights. And with many of them travelling out of the state for the first time, they were amazed by the sight of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge on the rest day visit. They also made sure they snuck some big city shopping in where they could. Clint Degebrodt is the V Swans regional development manager for the Roebourne Region.

Primary students kick off semester with West Coast Eagles school clinics By Ben Leahy

K 31

School holidays might be over but former Eagles captain Ross Glendinning last week helped primary students in Hedland and Karratha chase away some of the first week blues by holding sports clinics across the Pilbara. Ross and a team from AFL club the West Coast Eagles visited 12 primary schools in Hedland and Karratha as part of the Border Patrol program in partnership with Toyota. During the hour-and-a-half long visits, Ross gave short talks to the students before heading outside to play games and do footy drills. “We come in and talk about healthy living and eating and being active and getting outside as well as values, such as respect and discipline,” Ross said. Karratha’s Pegs Creek Primary School principal Gareth Palmer said the visit was a hit among his students. “That message of respect came out in every single thing [the Eagles and Toyota team] did,” Gareth said. “And they are so enthusiastic about what they do and used humour and role playing to get on the level of the students through from pre-primary to Year 7.” “With the kids being back for their first day of the semester, it is always good to reinforce those positive messages again after the break away.” With the Eagles players, such as Ben Cousins, having well documented off-field troubles in the mid-2000s,

Ross said the club had worked hard to improve its culture. “I think across the board, the club and the players have changed it around since the mid-2000s when we had a few cultural issues,” Ross said. “The club has embraced it enormously and now you have a culture that is accepted as being one of the higher cultures in the AFL.” In addition to the school visits, the team also dropped in on the Pilbara Toyota branches in Hedland and Karratha during the evenings. There they cooked up sausage sizzles and ran games, such as a handball competition and a camera that measures the speed at which you can kick a footy. While one of the Eagles team has so far recorded the fastest kick at 102km/h, local kids aren’t too far behind with some clocking in the high 90s. And despite the excitement among the kids, it was clear who the Eagles biggest fan was on the day “I was probably the most excited person coming into school today,” Pegs Creek principal Gareth said while decked out in his Eagles’ team jumper. “Having had 30-years of being a solid Eagles supporter, I don’t think there is anyone who could be more keen then me.” The Border Patrol visit also capped off a big day on July 24 for Pegs Creek Primary School with Education Minister Peter Collier earlier in the day dropping by for morning assembly.

Big turnout for fun run fundraiser By Ben Leahy

duties and said locals had been praising the event.

Sunday mornings might be sacrosanct to some Pilbara residents as a time to be in bed, but that didn’t stop more than 500 community members getting active for a good cause in last weekend’s Chevron City to Surf for Activ. The fun run took competitors over 12 and 4km courses with Neil Perry the first home over the longer distance in an impressive 39min33sec to clock just over a 3min15sec per kilometre pace.

“There has already been some super feedback, particularly over everyone’s Facebook pages,” John said “We’d love to see Chevron City to Surf for Activ back next year, and, if we don’t, we’ll go looking for them.” Having been running in Perth for 39-years, 2013 was the first time the City to Surf has come to Karratha. The event is the major fundraiser for Activ, which provides a range of services to people with a disability, such as respite, supported employment, education and training and recreational activities.

At the other end of the spectrum, many competitors were just happy to reach the finishing line with mums and dads pushing prams over the distances and other groups coming home holding hands in a show of teamwork.

With City to Surf fun runs also held in Albany and Busselton and more than 45,000 people taking part in 2012, the event is now the second largest official timed race in the Southern Hemisphere.

Member for the Pilbara Brendon Grylls took part and finished his run with a flourish as he ran backwards to cross the line.

To date, it has raised almost $140,000 for WA charities. Activ Foundation chief executive officer Tony Vis was also in town with his running shoes.

Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive officer John Lally was on MC

“I was there running the 12km and it was great to share the day with the community of Karratha,” he said.
