Multiple flood rescues after rain By Tamara Binamat Local police and emergency workers were called out to multiple separate incidents on Tuesday June 25 to rescue people caught in floodways after heavy rainfall and storms. About 3am Tuesday Roebourne police responded to a triple zero emergency call from the North West Coastal Highway, 20km north of Roebourne. The 56-year-old woman was travelling to Derby when she was caught in a floodway and couldn’t open her doors due to the water level. Roebourne Police said the woman was rescued from her Toyota Aurion and conveyed to a police four wheel drive vehicle. The woman’s Toyota was pushed off the side of the road out of floodwater. At 3:30pm that same day police responded to an alert that a whole family was in trouble at the Harding River near Woodbrook Road in Roebourne. A man and woman, both 24-years-old had travelled from the Ngurrawaana Community near Whim Creek before they came across the floodwaters. The pair removed four children aged 1, 2, 6 and 10-years-old from the vehicle so they could check the water level, and attempted to cross the floodway. About 50m through, the car lost traction and floated out to deeper water. The pair escaped the car and became stranded, holding onto a tree. Police from Wickham and Roebourne attempted to walk out to the pair with rope and flotation devices but after

• Police rescue a family of six from floodwaters in Roebourne about 100m the water level rose to about chest height and police weren’t able to continue. Two more police officers from Roebourne attended, bringing a personal boat. They used the boat to rescue the man and woman, and then rescued the four children who were on the other side of the floodwaters. The recue took about two hours. In Karratha, police, Department of Fire and Emergency Services crew and St John Ambulance officers were attending to a floodwater rescue at the North West Coastal Highway, just south of Madigan Road.

About 4:40am Tuesday two men travelling in a van were trapped in floodwaters before police and members of the public towed the vehicle to safety. While responding to this incident police spotted more travellers in trouble. The floodway north of Shell truck Stop outside of Karratha rose to 1m, and police said a number of four wheel drive vehicles were floating in the area. No one was found to be in life threatening danger.

Witnesses said the driver appeared to overcorrect a situation, sliding off the road and into a 10-foot deep culvert. The vehicle “headbutted” the culvert before flipping over, landing on its wheels. The accident happened on Monday June 24 about 11km north of Whim Creek. A spokesperson at Roebourne Police station said the travellers got away with minor injuries.

Strategic focus to shift to Indian Ocean By Ben Leahy A recently concluded Federal Senate report has called for a greater defence force presence in the North West to protect oil and gas and mining assets. Chair of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee, Alan Eggleston, said he would like to see facilities in the region upgraded to include a possible naval facility in Dampier and larger Pilbara Army Regiment. “The first thing we would like to see is a greater defence presence in the North West manning the Curtin airbase [north of Broome], which is a bare base, and more activity at the Exmouth Learmonth base,” Senator Eggleston said. “We would [also] like to see some sort of permanent naval facility along the Pilbara coast, maybe in Exmouth or Dampier, and we did think there was a case for having the regular army more involved in the [army’s] Pilbara Regiment in Karratha.” With the Pilbara’s resource wealth generating around six per cent of Australia’s gross domestic product, the committee’s report backs long running calls by industry and local government figures for a more visible security presence in the region. “We in this committee found the defence forces were very focused on North Queensland, that is where their bases are in Cairns and Townsville and yet there is no possible threats, we didn’t think, coming into the North East coast of Australia,” Senator Eggleston said. “I don’t think Vanuatu is going to attack Queensland. “Yet we have this incredible industry and unbelievable level of investment – billions and billions of dollars – and some of the people in the oil and gas industry with American owners have expressed concerns about the absence of any defence presence there.” The committee also recommended that Australia build

closer ties with countries located on the Indian Ocean rim, such as India, Indonesia and African nations. With Australia soon to take over as chair of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation, Senator Eggleston believes businesses in the North West are in a good position to capitalise on improved relations in the region. “Indonesia is supposed to be one of the world’s top eight economies within a decade and here we are [in the North West] sitting right next to them,” Senator Eggleston said.

Broader relations with Indonesia and India with its expanding middle class could lead to increased trade with Western Australia in tourism, agriculture and mining expertise. And with fishing stocks in the Indian Ocean coming under pressure from climate change, overfishing and an influx of fishers from outside the region, Australia could play a role in helping smaller countries to grow their fish stocks sustainably. This could lead to a larger deep sea fishing fleet based out of the North West, Senator Eggleston said.

EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara

President’s Message

Lang Coppin OAM

Thank you for taking the time to read the news update from the Shire Of East Pilbara.

Lang Coppin is a fourth generation pastoralist and a long serving Councillor of the Shire of East Pilbara for more than thirty years. He belongs to a dying breed of outback pastoralists who have committed their lives and families to an existence of isolation, extremes in weather and an unforgiving environment to provide the country with one of its most important exports. His 10-thousand head of cattle on a million acres at Yarrie and Muccan Station, approximately 90 km east of Marble Bar has been operating since 1896. Yarrie Station produces more than two million beef meals per year.

Congratulations to Councillor Lang Coppin who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to the East Pilbara. Cr Coppin has committed himself to his local government since 1977. He is the Shire of East Pilbara’s longest serving member having served Council for 35 years continuously (with the exception of a one year absence in 1985). Cr. Coppin was awarded the Order of Australia because he is a champion of the East Pilbara region and thoroughly deserves this important honour. I would also like to announce the resignation of Darren Bennetts as Councillor for the Lower Central Ward and thank him for his time and work for Council. This position is now vacant. The Shire of East Pilbara with BHP Billiton Iron Ore is encouraging all Newman residents to participate in the Newman Sunday Series for 2013 10 consecutive Sundays 9th June -11th August 2013 2pm – 4pm The Sunday Series will take over Newman’s central parks and performance spaces, with a free program of events for all ages. Students recreate parliament By Tamara Binamat

The student parliament sat with mock seats with names dedicated to former members of the electorates of Pilbara and Roebourne, such as Sholl and Buchanan. This is the first time a student parliament has been conducted in the Pilbara region. A welcome address from the sitting Member for the Pilbara and Minister for Regional Development Brendon Grylls was relayed from the actual state parliament sitting in Perth. Students took on roles such as Sergeant-at-Arms, Premier, Leader of the Opposition, Ministers and advisers. The year 10 and 11 students debated

In a week of upheaval in federal politics, we can be thankful students across the Pilbara are being praised for their potential as members of parliament. The Parliamentary Education Office of the Parliament of Western Australia toured through the Pilbara this week to teach school students the working of state parliament and law. Staff from the office collected together 48 students from Karratha Senior High School and St Luke’s College on Tuesday June 25 to create a student parliament based on the workings of the government chambers in Perth.

two bills, presented petitions, made member statements and spoke to an adjournment debate. Some students prepared speeches for the debate and others improvised onthe-spot. “We’ve got some really good kids who are thinking on their feet and they’re speaking to the topic and formulating a great argument, in seconds almost after what they hear from the other member, said James Sollis from the Parliamentary Education Office. “I saw some great speakers, they formed their argument very well. “Some managed to take interjections on the run and that’s pretty tricky.

Business community hope rental prices ease By Ben Leahy

that, but it might be possible to meet those prices again.”

With residential rental prices consistently easing off in Karratha since mid-2011, many in the business community are hoping office, retail and restaurant rentals follow suit.

Andrew Maxwell from real estate company First National Karratha is more confident commercial prices will stay steady.

Office and retail rental prices in Karratha still rival those charged in the Perth central business district as they hover around $750 per square metre, according to the Pilbara Development Commission. But with Shire planning approval granted to major commercial developments, such as The Quarter and Pelago Towers on Sharpe Avenue and two new multi-storey blocks on Hedland Place, there are hopes that market forces will drive prices down. “Logically, as more retail and office space comes online, if they are going to fill them, the price will need to stabilise or become a bit more realistic,” John Lally the chief executive officer of the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce said.

“We have one quarter of the small businesses that a town of this size would normally have and the biggest blocker of that has been the cost of renting properties,” Lally said.

“We expect that the strength of the iron ore and the LNG sectors that underpins this region will see the key industry players and their service providers attracted to this development,” said Bret Madden from commercial leasing agency Knight Frank.

Rob Sleator the chief executive officer of Pilbara Real Estate agreed that current prices were hard on retail businesses. “I wouldn’t expect with the increase of supply coming in that retail or office or any type of commercial lease would exceed $750 per square metre,” Sleator said. “That was top dollar that Finbar got [for its commercial leases in 2012] and I would not anticipate new leases to exceed

“I just took a call before you from someone from Queensland looking for information on Pelago – [we get about] three enquiries a week on the retail, office, food outlet spaces in Pelago.” Developers Mirvac also appear to be targeting high-end clients to rent out the first commercial leases that become available in the $100m The Quarter project.

Lally hoped that rental prices would eventually drop to between $400 and $500 per square metre and allow shops, such as “butchers and bakers”, to become viable.

“There are a lot of enquiries from big name national companies, such as franchises that are looking to get into Karratha,” Maxwell said.

High rental costs have in the past decade been seen by many as a major obstacle to diversifying the local economy from its heavy reliance on the resources sector.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. Yet even if rental prices remain high in the Pelago towers and The Quarter, Lally is hopeful that there will be enough future developments to accommodate businesses of all sizes.

When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. “The market hasn’t gone up over the last two years but we certainly don’t see it coming down either,” Maxwell said. Pilbara’s good, bad and ugly on show in new competitiveness index By Ben Leahy A new online index that ranks the Pilbara’s competitiveness in areas such as its economic fundamentals, human capital and business sophistication, has received the backing of the region’s development commission. With strong resources exports, the index found that the Pilbara ranks first out of 55 Regional Development Australia regions for its economic fundamentals but fourth last for its delivery of infrastructure and essential services.

then we are lower down the list. “So the target is to raise some of these other areas to a higher level, and obviously as economic development practitioners, this is a good tool for us to compare ourselves with other developed areas in Australia.” King said another advantage of the index was how it allowed users to group similar regions together. “You can compare the Pilbara with other resource rich areas, such as central Queensland or the Hunter region and you will find where we all are on achieving improvements in areas, such as human capital or business sophistication,” he said. “It shows us to some extent the good, the bad and the ugly. Wild weather breaks records By Tamara Binamat On Tuesday June 25 residents across the Pilbara woke up to flooded roads, pouring rain and howling wind. Daniel Hayes at the Bureau of Meteorology in Port Hedland said June rainfall records around Karratha and Port Hedland were washed away with both areas recording the most rain ever to fall in June. With Karratha recording 209mm in the 24-hour period to

9am Tuesday, it was only 3mm shy of the highest daily rainfall ever recorded. The highest June daily rainfall was recorded to be 179.3mm in 1989, and the highest all-time daily record is 212.4mm in January 2006. Roebourne also exceeded its June daily rainfall record of 133.9mm recorded in 1968, receiving even more rain than Karratha with 224mm. The

highest

ever

daily

reading for Roebourne is set at 233.7mm in March 1945. Mr Hayes said the rainfall came because of a low-pressure system off the Pilbara coast. The low pressure system and the associated cloud band is moving up the coast, after coming over the top of the Pilbara on Monday and Tuesday. Port Hedland recorded 140mm to 9am Tuesday, which also exceeded their June rainfall record.

Wildlife watch: Southern Boobook

The southern boobook (Ninox novaeseelandiae), also called the Tasmanian spotted owl, is a small brown owl found throughout New Zealand, Tasmania, across most of mainland Australia and in Timor, southern New Guinea and nearby islands. This bird is the smallest owl in Australia and is the continent’s most widely distributed and common owl. The bird has almost 20 alternative common names, including mopoke, morepork, ruru and boobook, most of which are onomatopoeic, as they emulate the bird’s distinctive twopitched call. Two subspecies, the Lord Howe boobook and the Norfolk Island boobook, both became extinct during the 20th century. The southern boobook is identified by its plumage, which is dark chocolate brown above and rufous brown below, heavily streaked and spotted with white. The bill is grey with a darker tip, and the feet are grey or yellow. The facial disc is chocolate brown and the eyes are large and yellowish. Tasmanian birds are smaller and more heavily spotted with white, while birds of the Cape York rainforests are slightly larger and darker. Young southern boobooks are almost entirely buff-white below, with conspicuous dark brown facial discs. Like other owl species, the southern

boobook is nocturnal. These birds are often observed perched on an open branch or treetop. It occurs in most habitats with trees, ranging from deep tropical forests to isolated stands at the edges of arid zones, farmland, alpine grasslands or urban areas, but is most common in temperate woodland. Although their main hunting technique is perch-and-pounce, they are agile birds with a swift, goshawklike wing action and the ability to manoeuvre rapidly when pursuing prey or hawking for insects. Almost any suitably sized prey is taken, particularly small birds, mammals and large insects such as moths, grasshoppers and, in New Zealand, wetas. During the day, boobooks sleep in roosts. By night they hunt a variety of animals, mainly large invertebrates including scarab and huhu beetles, moths and caterpillars, wetas and spiders. They also take small birds, rats and mice. They can find suitable food in pine forests as well as native forest. The southern boobook feeds on insects, small mammals such as the house mouse, and other small animal species. Although mainly nocturnal, they are sometimes active at dawn and dusk. The main hunting times are evenings

and mornings, with brief bursts of activity through the night. Feeding takes place mostly at night but some afternoon and morning activity may occur, especially on dull days. Most prey is detected by listening and watching from a suitable tall perch. Once detected, flying prey such as moths and small bats are seized in midair while ground-dwelling prey animals are pounced upon.

On dark nights they often perch through the middle hours but if the weather is bad they may hunt by daylight instead. The southern boobook’s nest is normally a tree hollow, which is usually sparsely lined with wood shavings, leaves and small twigs, but may be left bare. The female incubates the eggs, but both sexes, and sometimes a second female helper, feed the young.

2012 was a big year for the band, made up of brothers Tom and Nick Wolfe and friends Casey Kostiuk and Brodie Rainbird. The band has been travelling Australia-wide to support Lee Kernaghan’s tour as well as forging their own name in Australia’s music scene. The band entered reality TV show Australia’s Got Talent last year, and ended up being the first band to ever make it to the grand final, finishing second. “We were down here in Tasmania for years working really hard and we never really got a break,” Tom said. “To get what we’ve got out of [Australia’s Got Talent], it’s been amazing, incredible.

“One minute we’re in the pubs, the next minute we’re playing on national TV. “None of us ever expected to get as far as we did.” A true Aussie country rock band, The Wolfe Brothers is all about showmanship and Tom said their music covers a diverse range of genres, depending on the audience. “It’s going to be an absolute awesome time over there, we’ll be right up their alley,” he said. “We’ll do some stuff off the album and some classic rock and a bit of country. “We’ll play anything from Slim Dusty to ACDC!”

YOLO

may live another day

The YOLO sensation in Karratha is officially over, with the Ibis Styles packed full of partygoers at the closing down party last Saturday June 22. Distorted Noize began the YOLO events in May last year with the concept of giving locals a good time at cheap prices. The events began with local DJs, but as YOLO became more popular, they have been able to bring in interstate DJs to Karratha, such as Ace Basik, G-Wizard and Ministry of Sound’s Tom Piper. YOLO director and DJ Adam Hankinson said the past year had been amazing. “The town has never seen anything like this before,” he said. “YOLO was all about bringing city-style clubbing to the Pilbara, and we pulled it off every time. “Everyone [who was] part of the YOLO crew has grown closer together, and we are like a little family.” When asked if the crew have anything else in store for the future, Adam responded with a knowing smile. “Maybe,” he winked. “You’ll just have to wait and see.”

NUTRITION by April Butt

aprilbnutrition@gmail.com 0406 490 614

This week’s health condition in focus: Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism) The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland positioned at the front of the neck on the trachea. Often referred to as ‘the master of metabolism’, the hormones this gland creates and secretes regulate the metabolic rate of all cells, energy, cell growth and normal tissue growth. There is not a single body system the hormones from this master gland do not influence. Some of the life-sustaining activities achieved include regulating body temperature, the breakdown of carbohydrate, fats and proteins and overall digestive function, heart function, growth and maintenance of the skeleton, reproductive ability and keeping the nervous system functioning. Disorders of the thyroid gland and hormones include both overactivity and underactivity, basically fast cell function or slow cell function. The thyroid disorders are much more frequent in women than in men affecting five in 1,000 males and 27 in 1,000 females in Australia.

Hypothyroid (slow cell function) is the most common of these disorders. Symptoms commonly felt in someone with low thyroid function include, but are not limited to, trouble shifting weight when areas such as diet and exercise have been addressed, depression, trouble keeping warm, constant fatigue, dry skin and hair, high cholesterol levels, thinning of the outer eyebrow and constipation. You can be diagnosed with a blood test. Here are my top dietary and lifestyle tips to support the master of metabolism: • Minimise stress - Stress hormones inhibit the thyroidstimulating hormone, downregulating total function. Force yourself to completely stop what you are doing at least three times a day, and simply take five deep breaths that reach your stomach. Exercise, reading, dancing and laughing are more quick stress remedies and they are all free. • Consume protein at every meal – One quarter of the plate, or the size of your palm at each main meal, should consist of a source

of protein. Tyrosine, a key amino acid from protein is absolutely crucial to the creation of the thyroid hormone. Food options include eggs, chicken, seafood, red meat, legumes, lentils, pulses, nuts and seeds. Soy products are not recommended for thyroid conditions. • Correct Iodine deficiency Iodine is a key component within the hormone itself. Unfortunately it is a very common global deficiency, especially in Australia and New Zealand, which leads to hypothyroidism. Top sources are seafood, seaweeds, shellfish and to a small extent eggs. If these aren’t common features in your weekly diet then supplementation is advised. • Be weary of Goitrogens These are substances within certain foods that interfere with iodine uptake. They appear mainly in soybean products, millet and brassica vegetables such as kale, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Always cook or steam brassica vegetables to avoid this effect and avoid soy and millet completely. Note that smoking also has this effect.

• Shellfish and seafood provide a good source of iodine in your diet • Reduce exposure to toxins Household cleaners, cosmetics, air fresheners, hair products, paints, fumes and chemicals of all varieties impair the body’s ability to create and distribute all hormones at a normal value. Switch to natural options wherever possible and always have fresh oxygen flowing. Take regular breaks when you absolutely must use unnatural household products.

There is not a single body system the hormones from this master gland do not influence.

Childcare industry gets a boost An Early Learning Scholarship Program partnership between Rio Tinto, the Shire of Roebourne and Pilbara Institute has been instrumental in the recognition and up-skilling of early childhood educators in the community. Since its launch in 2008, there have been more than fifty scholarship recipients who have had the opportunity to progress their careers in the industry. Louise Jarosz, Centre Director of the YMCA Tambrey Early Learning Centre was awarded one of the first scholarships offered

back in 2010 and completed the Advanced Diploma of Children’s Services at Pilbara Institute’s Karratha campus. “The scholarship was such a great incentive,” Louise said. “I have been in the child care industry for nearly twenty years and it was great to get more qualifications and be recognised for something that I’ve loved doing for so many years.” Louise completed her course partly via flexible delivery, which required her to finish the program at her own pace, outside the classroom.

She also completed many of the units through Recognition of Prior Learning, which allowed her to complete the course in less time. “I received a lot of support from my lecturer who was always available when I needed guidance,” Louise said. “And I finished the advanced diploma level without any problems.” At the YMCA Tambrey Early Learning Centre there are five staff members who have also received the scholarship and are currently working on acquiring their qualifications.

There are also six scholarship recipients from Yaandina Childcare Centre, Millars Well Childcare Centre, Embracing Children Family Day Care, Children’s Services Support Unit and Dampier Childcare Centre currently participating in the program. Louise said staff members are directly benefiting from the scholarship. “The training they’re undergoing will certainly equip them in their roles,” she said. “What we do here is so much more than just babysitting and the program has helped lift

the profile of childcare to a whole new level.” Sarah Penn, Children’s Services lecturer, said she is delighted with the positive response to the program. “The goal of the scholarship program is to highlight early childhood education, equip and upskill those who are already in the field and generate more interest,” Sarah said. “I’m hopeful that this initiative will help the community to bridge the gap in the childcare industry and produce more qualified educators.”

Hedland trainer is king at Family Day races Horse racing season has galloped into gear in the Pilbara as Port Hedland trainer Anne King was the big winner at the Family Day meeting in Roebourne on Saturday June 22. Anne trained four winners on the day and kick-started her 2013 campaign after a relatively quiet start to the earlier part of the season. Jockey Jeffrey Berry was aboard all four of the King stable winners as they began their success in the opening race of the day, riding Rosini to victory in the $8,500 Karratha Contracting Handicap (1,600m). King then proceeded to train the last three winners on the program with Black Truffle, Monemvasia and Kingtar all winning in succession. Port Hedland Trainer Anne King celebrated a stellar day at The Nor West Jockey Club’s Family Day meeting at Roebourne last Saturday, training four winners. The King stable have had a relatively quiet start to the Pilbara season but that all changed on the weekend and there is no doubt plenty more winners are in store. The powerful King and jockey Jeffrey Berry combination

teamed up for all four of the wins with Berry proving his dominance as the Pilbara’s leading jockey. The day began with King celebrating her 1st winner in the opening race, The $8,500 Karratha Contracting Handicap (1,600m),when Rosini just nosed out Surin. Rosini had been slightly disappointing at Port Hedland but in a race with few chances he did look the likely winner although he had to really fight tooth and nail with Surin all the way down the straight. King then proceeded to train the last three winners on the program, with Black Truffle,Monemvasia and Kingtar all winning in succession. Kingtar stood out as the most impressive winner when, in the $9,000 NRW Handicap (1,400m), he blew the start by at least five lengths but then recovered to battle it out and nose in front for victory just at the finishing line. Last year’s Roebourne Cup winner, Greatwall of China was an eye catching third in the race. King also very nearly trained five winners on the day with Reverb narrowly getting beaten

in Race 2, as Chenonceau Lady earned a well deserved win in the $12,000 Coates Hire Great Northern Handicap (1,600m). The Great Northern Handicap is a time-honoured race at Roebourne that has a habit of producing exciting finishes and last Saturday was no exception with four horses hitting the line and only a breath of air separated them. Very few Roebourne meetings go by without Exmouth trainer Peter Dellar grabbing a victory and on Saturday it was his Incoherent that raced to victory in the $12,000 Pilbara Echo Cossack Handicap(1,200m). Ridden perfectly by Noel Rudland, Incoherent let the speedsters go ahead and then the six-year old gelding got into the race at the right time to hold off a late challenge from the very consistent Sneaky Jockey. Eliza Finger celebrated her first winner as a senior rider when Keep Her Secret scored in the $8,000 LJ Hooker Maiden (1,200m). Racing continues at Port Hedland this Sunday with historic Roebourne race course to host its Ladies Day on Saturday July 13.

Personal bests continue to be beaten as Karratha’s little athletes gathered for another successful night of competition night on Friday June 21 at Bulgarra oval. With so many great results, it was good to see the kids competing against each other and understanding that it is about improving each week and beating your personal best. PB highlights on track included top efforts over 200m with Jordyn Penman posting 43.71 in the Under 7 girls, Bradley Wooldridge running 42.96 in the boys and Zoe Patterson achieving a new PB of 37.24 in the Under 11 girls. In the 60m Hurdles, Adam Giltrow took more than four seconds off his previous PB for a time of 14.21. In the Under 10 girls, Sommer Dew smashed her previous PB for the hurdles by more than five seconds to record a time of 15.81. The 400m saw Hannah Gibbs take 30 seonds off her time previous best time to complete the event in 1m41s. The field events saw Te-Ariki Waipouri add and extra 2.75m

to his previous PB in the javelin, throwing12.96m. Connor McGlade had a massive throw in the discus beating his previous best by 3.5m to record a distance of 11.44m. There were big improvements all round in the High Jump with Jessen Cresswell adding 28cm to his previous PB at 1.08m. This is just a small sample of what was a great night for PBs. Well done to all the

Record turnout of riders tackle six-hour race By Ben Leahy Visiting Perth rider Michael Kerklaan capped a successful trip north last weekend as he took home the solo victory in Karratha’s six-hour mountain bike enduro race, this year contested by a record 86 cyclists.

And it was Kerklaan who dominated from the outset as he completed 13 laps in six hours to finish ahead of local rider Richie Chipman on 12 laps in the men’s solo, while Mikayla Smith took the women’s title with eight laps. Toby and Nick Muller were the fastest team over the course as they blazed through 14 laps to beat home Shannon Tunstead and Kim Sparks on 13 laps in the men’s duo category.

But perhaps the day’s big winner was the event itself, which attracted high praise from visiting riders from Perth and Hedland, such as Kerklaan.

“I loved it – it was one of the best events I’ve been to for some time,” said Kerklaan, who has competed around Australia and next year travels to South Africa for the famed Epic mountain bike stage race.

The Pilbara’s closest thing to the Tour de France, the Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s Dr Baynton’s 6 Hour Remedy race took men and women’s solo, duo and team riders over a rocky nine kilometre off-road loop.

“I’ve had a chat to a few of my mountain biking friends in Perth, who are already saying that they’ll come up next year.” Fellow Perth rider Dylan Cross, who finished third in the men’s solo, agreed. With visiting riders housed for free at the Ibis Styles Hotel and in local homes, he was able to use his frequent flyer points to get a flight to Karratha for $57 and do the trip on the cheap. “It was a no brainer to come up – even if I had to spend a couple of hundred dollars more, I still would have had a blast,” Cross said.

And along with the race organisers and friendly locals, Cross also singled out Karratha’s trails for praise. “You guys are spoilt for trails because, one, there is some unique, really fun stuff, and, two, it is so close to town,” he said. Among other results on the day, the fourmember My First Foresome won the team’s category with 13 laps, while the Dust Bunnies’ Carly Doyle and Sally Smith won the women’s duo with 10 laps. Husband and wife team Mitch and Amanda Ewin won the mixed duo with 11 laps and the BRS Racing Team was the first team home in the social category over the shorter six-kilometre loop. The Dust Bunnies were also unanimous victors in the best costume category and were party stalwarts in the after race celebrations that extended past 2am. Steve McLeod was arguably the most famous racer on the day – not only was he a member of the My First Foresome team but the Sorry Steve and The New Steve & Trev teams were also named in his honour. Visiting rider Bart King laid claims to being called the event’s iron man. As well as completing 11 laps as a solo rider, he also drove an hour back to the Cape Preston mine once the event finished at 9pm so he could start an early morning shift at work. Back in Perth, meanwhile, Kerklaan is now facing the decision whether to keep spruiking Karratha’s six-hour race to his city buddies or preserve it as a hidden secret. By winning the Karratha event, he picked up points for the WA enduro race series that his main rivals missed out on. “That is the thing, I’m torn between telling everybody about it and how good it is or just keeping it to myself and basking in the glory,” he said with a laugh. Karratha’s Watling motors to top result in desert race By Jamie Nicolaou Karratha motocross ace Jake Watling has shown his class by finishing second in a field packed with leading Australian dirt bikers at an enduro event held near Carnarvon last weekend. Competitors in the Doorawarrah 500 had their skills tested as they raced 500km over a course that crossed ridges and soft sand hills, fast flat claypans, a small rocky section and dry dusty plains. Riding a Suzuki RMZ 450, Watling started the weekend strongly by finishing second in the 10km prologue on Friday

June 21, before racing hard to maintain that position over the next two days. Motorex KTM sponsored rider Ben Grabham from New South Wales was first over the finishing line, while Rod Faggotter from Queensland came home third. Held for the first time at Doorawarrah Station, 100km east of Carnarvon, the Doorawarrah 500 is the first event in the three-race WA Desert Racing Tri Series that also includes races near Port Hedland and Newman. With $80,000 in total prize money up for grabs, the Tri Series attracts top riders from across

the country, such as Ben Grabham, Matt Fish, Jehi Willis, Coby Willis and Rob Faggoter. Grabham alone has previously won the Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs and competed in the famous Dakar Rally. Karratha’s two other hopefuls at the Doorawarrah 500, brothers Adam and Luke Clay, raced well in the prologue and had solid rides on Saturday with Adam finishing the day in fourth and Luke seventh out of about 140 riders. And despite some bad luck on Sunday with both brothers having rear tyre problems, they had still

Motocross had a big start to 2013 at Wickham with the first three competition rounds producing top racing and the club now gearing up for its annual Pindan Dash blue ribbon event. Nominations for this year’s Pindan Dash on July 7 are flowing in at a steady rate and it is already shaping up to be another great event. Going on the numbers from previous years, the Wickham, Roebourne and Point Samson Motocross Club are expecting large numbers in all classes across the field. The prize money pool and trophy is the largest amount the bluc has paid out for a Pindan Dash due to good sponsorship for 2013 and there will also be prizes for hole shot on round 2 of every class. In addition to the Pindan Dash, the club’s opening rounds of racing have been great, with the track still in top condition following the recent rains and upgrades made to the 50cc track for the kids.

The club facilities continue to improve with every race event and this includes the lush green camping grounds that provide a fantastic spot for families to stay overnight. WRAPS wishes to thank its volunteers, supporters and 2013 sponsors for their efforts so far as well as Barry and Sue Branch, who have worked tirelessly for the past seven years, since founding the club. done enough to secure their place inside the top ten with Adam finishing seventh and Luke ninth outright. Luke finished second in class in E3. The next round will be in July at Indee Station, 65km south of Port Hedland, where a number of riders will be out to resurrect their series after a poor start last weekend. 2012 Indee winner Matt Fish and 2011 winner Jehi Willis will aim to overcome mechanical issues last weekend and put pressure on the other riders. As winner of the Doorawarrah 500, Ben Grabham is the only competitor still eligible for the $20,000 bonus that goes to a rider if they win all three races. Yet he is sure to feel pressure from the rest of the field as the Indee is renowned for being notoriously tough on bike and rider. If you would like to watch some of the best desert racers in the state and country, be sure to head to Indee Station for the second round of the WA Desert Racing Tri-Series from July 12-14. Camping facilities are available.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates

Anglers enjoy the big wet

K 32

BRAND WOEN0095C

My goodness, could it rain any more this year? So far it has been the wettest year that many locals can remember. Although the rain can deter you from fishing, the good news is that when we get good falls of rain, it helps for even better fishing in the following months. I’m sure that the good rainfall will push nutrients into the gulf, particularly on the eastern side, which in turn creates good food for everything else further up the food chain. And a healthy gulf, means a lot more here than most people realise. Fred and Martina Frayne are an Irish couple visiting from Germany. The two travellers came here for the fishing and diving and the general marine-life experience that Ningaloo offers. The two had some amazing diving and are

now set to get out and have some fun catching fish from the shore. They are set up with some travel rods and reels purchased locally, along with soft plastics, poppers, metal slices and some wet weather gear! The two are keen to catch and release fish and according to reports the queenfish have been biting on the high tide south of Bundegi lately. Chasing queenfish on the low tide in this area can be tricky and usually means wading out quite some distance and then moving back to shore as the tide comes in. However, the silver speedsters have been showing up in good numbers on the high tide and this makes it easier for anglers. The metal lures cast far and retrieved quickly should work well on the queenfish, while small poppers and soft

plastics can also result in a bite or two. We recommend single barbless hooks for ease of release when chasing sports fish that are to be returned to the water. Last week we spoke about the results of the Exmouth classic and attached this week is a pic of some of the great reef fish caught during the competition. Pictured are Dirk Clatworthy and his team who won the Champion Boat section. Jarrod Faithful caught the heaviest red emperor, weighing 9.1kg and the juniors caught some great fish too, with all juniors getting the opportunity to choose a lure for their next fishing venture. The next EGFC event is the Ultra-Light tournament, which is to be held on August 6-8. For full details go to www.egfc.com.au.

Hipbone Sticking Out is a play written with and for the Roebourne community, bringing the Pilbara alive through song, dance and stories. Woodside-operated Pluto LNG is proud to support this landmark production by Big hART, through Woodside’s Conservation Agreement with the Australian Government. Three years in the making, we wish the cast and crew all the best for the national debut at the Canberra Theatre Centre on 3 July.
