1 Karratha Police have received complaints about a computer scam that has been going around for a few months now. This particular scam involves scammers posing as the Australian Federal Police (AFP) trying to scare you into handing over money to regain control of your computer. This scam involves internet users finding that their computer has been frozen, with a pop-up alert appearing on their screen. The alert claims to be from the AFP and states that the user’s computer has been locked because they have visited an illegal website or

breached various laws. The scammer claims that they will unlock the computer if a fee is paid. How does the scam get on your computer and what happens? • You visit a website or receive an email that scammers have infected with scareware. • Out of the blue, your computer freezes and you receive a pop-up alert from what appears to be a reputable authority such as the Australian Federal Police. The alert may include a police logo to make it appear legitimate.

• The alert states that your computer has been frozen because you have violated a law or visited an illegal website. • In order to unlock the computer, you are instructed to pay a ’fine’, usually $100 or $199, using a prepaid money service. • If you pay the money, the scammers may or may not unlock your computer. Even if you do regain access to your computer, malware may continue to operate so that the scammers can use your personal and financial details to commit fraud. How to protect yourself:

• Be wary about which websites you visit and do not open emails from unknown senders. • Before you download a file, make sure it is from a reputable source. • Always keep your computer security up to date with anti-virus and anti-spyware software and a good firewall. The AFP does not solicit funds and this message is not associated with the AFP in any way. You can report scams via the website www.scamwatch.com. au or by calling 1300 795 995.

Brawl ends with assault on police oďŹƒcer By Tamara Binamat

the face and chest by Port Hedland man.

A street brawl involving around 40 people required police to use pepper spray and deploy a taser to control a violent crowd. Two groups of people were involved in a fight at the Pier Hotel in Port Hedland on Saturday night before one of the groups was ejected. A short time later the remaining group of people spilled onto the street where a series of fights broke out with the other group. Port Hedland Police intervened and called for back up from South Hedland Police. About three men were peppersprayed by police. As South Hedland Police arrived a fight was interjected on the corner of Anderson Street and The Esplanade where a police officer was punched in

The officer then tasered the man and took him into custody.

Port Hedland police Sergeant Jason Gentili said fighting would not be tolerated.

Nine people were charged with various offences including assaulting a public officer, breach of move on notice and disorderly conduct.

“If you get into a fight you’re going to be charged with disorderly at a bare minimum ‌ we’re not going to let you get away with it,â€? he said.

The Pilbara survived the long weekend with no traffic fatalities, but Pilbara Traffic Police said there were still too many people doing the wrong thing on the roads, and the road toll for the region could have been very different. An increased police presence in the Pilbara ramped up long weekend traffic operations, with booze buses and traffic stops deployed around the region. Operations ran from Friday May 31 to Monday June 4. On the Friday evening Pilbara Traffic Police ran Operation Taskin 10, deploying a booze bus in Karratha. Police tested 1,049 drivers in Karratha, with seven drivers returning a positive test for drink driving. Subsequently two people were charged with excess 0.08 and one person was charged with excess 0.00. 23 other charges resulted from the operation including no authority to drive and obstructing police and one car was impounded. Also on the Friday night, a man was charged with multiple offences after a rampage at various locations in Port Hedland. The Port Hedland man was caught driving 107kmh in a 60kmh zone. He was charged with drink driving, speeding and driving an unlicensed vehicle and his vehicle was seized by police. Saturday evening’s Operation Quartz 17 in Karratha stopped 61 vehicles and led to five charges being laid including driving an unlicensed vehicle and drink driving. One person was charged with excess 0.08, three with excess 0.05 and one with excess 0.00. On Monday a WA Day Operation was run throughout the state and local police conducted

a dedicated blitz on Dampier Highway, targeting speeding. Police issued 64 infringements and one vehicle was detected travelling almost double the speed limit in the 60kmh work zone. The driver was charged with reckless driving and the vehicle impounded. “The speeding on Dampier Highway is unacceptable, said officer in charge at Pilbara Traffic Steve Scott. “I’m happy that everybody got through the long weekend in the Pilbara safe and sound, but it could have been a very different story.

Hedland hotpot to add spice to Channel 10’s Masterchef By Ben Leahy Her home cooking spices up dinner parties for Port Hedland family and friends and her energetic personality keeps local school teachers on their toes. Now executives at Channel 10’s Masterchef hope Liliana Battle’s lively personality also brings a ratings zing to the reality cooking show as it launched into its fifth season last week. Liliana, who is a stay at home mum to two boys in Port Hedland, is the only Western Australian contestant in this edition of the show and has already been labelled a Tiger Mum by its marketing team. “I’m a bit fiery, I stand up for what I believe in,” Liliana told the Pilbara Echo. “Anyone in Port Hedland will tell you the teachers run a mile when they see me coming as I am constantly at the school, and I’ve got my boys’ backs for anything that goes on because I love them to absolute pieces.” “At the same time, I won’t create drama [on Masterchef] if it doesn’t need to be created – I’m not going to be a reality show star that comes off as a bitch, that is not who I am. “But if I strongly believe in something I will stand up and say what I need to say.” For Pilbara viewers facing a saturation of TV cooking shows and with Masterchef’s girls versus the boys concept getting poor reviews, Liliana will be a welcome drawcard. Yet for Liliana, the showmanship comes second to focusing on the cooking. Having spent years supporting her sons and husband Jason, she said Masterchef is a chance to pursue her own dreams, after a number of friends and family told her to enter the show.

“If you talk to anyone in Port Hedland, they all say the best restaurant in town is Liliana’s house,” she said with a laugh. And her Port Hedland friends should know as they have been her guinea pigs over the last seven years as she experimented from an ever-expanding collection of cookbooks. “[Growing up in an Italian family] I just love the idea of people coming around and having a massive table completely loaded with food and everyone is so full they are groaning with a big smile on their faces,” she said. And if she does well in Masterchef, there might be room for even more guests as she hopes to write her own cookbook and open up a friendly café and restaurant. “I’d love to – I’ve just got to find somewhere to put one,” she said. “But once this is over and I get home it is definitely a possibility, I know the community would support me and it would be a great thing for Port Hedland.” But first there is the challenge of surviving in the competition with the first few home cooks already eliminated from the show. And where Liliana takes her time in her own kitchen and generally cooks with a glass of wine in hand, she said the biggest challenge in Masterchef has been the time limits. “When you have got a 50-minute challenge, and you’ve got way less space and you don’t have your kitchen at your finger tips, the adrenaline gets racing and it is stressful but it is so much fun as well,” she said. “We have an absolute ball, it is a wonderful experience and I wouldn’t give it away for the world.”

Sir Bob’s Pilbara adventure By Tamara Binamat

• Gabrielle Sullivan with Geldof

The Newman community received a surprise visit from human rights activist, rock star and honorary knight Bob Geldof last week. The Boomtown Rats frontman spent Tuesday May 28 in Newman, visiting mine sites, local watering holes and the Martumili Artists Art Centre. Geldof arrived bright and early at the Art Centre where Martumili artists Yunkurra Billy Atkins and Miriam Atkins displayed their work. Gabrielle Sullivan, manager Martumili Artists said Bob Geldof is a keen art collector and was very engaged with local artists. “He is obviously very knowledgeable about art and he asked lots of questions about how the Art Centre operates, what motivates the artists and how the artists critique their work,” Gabrielle said. “I was impressed at his knowledge of contemporary art and his genuine interest in what motivates people in this part of the world to create.”

INTRODUCING NEW NO LOCK-IN PLANS K 10

ON AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST AND MOST RELIABLE MOBILE NETWORK

Catch of the day The FIFO fish and chip and Italian shop in the Pelago West tower is fast earning a reputation among locals for being Karratha’s seafood specialists. WA seafood not only dominates The FIFO’s fish and chip menu, but is used in the store’s traditional Italian pizza, pasta and risotto dishes as well. For The FIFO owner Jessica Pritchard, there is a simple reason to use WA seafood – fishing in the North West is the best in the country. “Pilbara has the highest rate of boat ownership in WA,” Jessica said. “So with everyone here having such a great knowledge of fish, it is our commitment to source only the finest and freshest seafood locally in WA. “That is why you find our menu is marked with Western Australian fish, particular premium fish from Pilbara region, like Goldband snapper, Exmouth blue emperor and silver whiting.” “Then there is the pink snapper, which is in season and wild caught at Carnarvon.” Since opening in early 2013, The FIFO has been offering customers a large menu of traditional fish and chips that besides WA fish, includes NZ jumbo oysters, scrumptious WA tiger prawns, NZ large mussels, house cut salt pepper squid rings, battered or pan fried calamari, jumbo scallops, potato cakes, pineapple fritters, etc.

More recently, The FIFO has also launched its full Italian menu prepared by Mad Max, who has more than seven years as an Italian chef in Sydney. The menu offers customers the choice of 15 pizzas, ranging from the exotic green Thai pizza to traditional margherita’s, as well as 11 pasta dishes, including the seafood marinara with WA tiger prawn, fish and squid. There is also a selection of Italian pasta and risottos arousing your taste buds. Jessica said the Italian menu has been just as warmly received as the fish and chips with many people commenting especially on the thin and crispy pizza bases that are prepared fresh before the customer’s eyes each day. “They tell me they have never tasted pizzas like this in Karratha before,” Jessica said.

Widgee has her day as Red Dog Festival wraps up By Ben Leahy

Proud pooches have stolen the show of a Red Dog Festival finale that was otherwise dampened by unseasonably wet weather last Sunday June 2. With drizzling rain all afternoon, crowds were smaller than hoped as the Dampier Market’s stalls closed early and live music act the DooDaddies were forced to perform in the Hampton Oval pavilion’s clubrooms. But that didn’t stop a healthy gathering of canines and their owners turning out for the festival’s dog show, judged by former Red Dog vet Rick Fenny from the Pets and Vets clinic. The event even helped give birth to a new star as red kelpie Widgee found herself in more photos than Angelina Jolie after being adjudged the Best Red Dog in the contest. Owner Lena Wiggerman, who brought up husband Don and Widgee from Perth, said people had been asking if they could pose for photos with Widgee everywhere from the Mermaid hotel and Red Dog statue in Dampier to roadhouses on the higway home. “She had a lovely time because she is a very personable and friendly dog and loves being the centre of attention,” Lena said. In fact, Widgee might even be developing a slight diva personality as Lena is “still trying to bring her back to earth”. For organiser Peter Kay, meanwhile, the local support for the dog show and two-day relay event that took competitors on an endurance race from Dampier to Millstream National Park is encouragement to hold the festival again next year. “The most important thing for me was that people had fun, and that’s the overwhelming feedback we’ve had,” Peter said. “Although it’s early in the debrief process, we have every intention of bringing the festival back in 2014.” Sue Hedley from not for profit group SAFE, which rescues unwanted animals, said that she can’t recall another dog show happening in Karratha and Dampier. “The actual event went really well and I think people loved showing off their very loved animals as much as the spectators enjoyed looking on,” Sue said. As well as the dog show, Red Dog Festival Relay competitors also completed their final stage - a kayak paddle along the Dampier foreshoree before gathering together to watch blues band the DooDaddies perform with a relieved Peter Kay singing along. Widgee, meanwhile, finished off her day, after a lunch stop at the Mermaid hotel, feeling just as tired as competitors in the relay. “When we got in the car to go back to camp, she normally sits on the seat but she dropped down on the floor, put her head on my lap and in about five seconds she was sound asleep,” Lena said.

Muzzy’s community effort smashes records By Tamara Binamat The Muzzy’s fourth annual Community Fundraiser and Trade Show was a huge success on Saturday May 25 as more people visited and more funds were raised than ever before. This year’s fundraiser more

than doubled last year’s with $26,500 raised on behalf of Tom Price’s 21 sporting and not-for-profit groups. Featuring a pet farm, bouncy castles, food stalls, face painting, mini golf, ten pin bowling, a DJ and popular fire truck, the event attracted about 1,600 community members.

Specialising in fibreglass pool refurbishments

Q: My husband and I are at the point in our lives where we have money saved and are considering our financial future. We are interested in purchasing an investment property and like the look of some of the older houses in our area. But we want to know whether it is smarter to stick to purchasing a new property.

Alice, north of the river in Perth.

A: Dear Alice, every property is different. From old to new, different properties present different opportunities. However, a new property will typically provide a number of advantages over an existing property in a like-for-like location. • New properties are desirable among tenants and will achieve a rental premium over a comparable older house. • New properties can be landscaped to a low-maintenance standard, while older properties may have large gardens requiring ongoing maintenance. • New properties are unlikely to require any maintenance in the short to medium term, while older properties may require (potentially expensive) work throughout the investment timeframe – and these costs may be unknown at the time of purchase. • New houses receive the full depreciation allowance on building costs and fixtures and fittings from the Australian Taxation Office. • New properties can take advantage of being specified to handle the latest in telecommunications wiring. We generally recommend avoiding older properties as investments, unless the property is suitable for a complete refurbishment or subdivision, or is unique in terms of location or architecture.

Does negative gearing really create wealth? By Ryan Crawford The ATO released data recently from the 2010/11 tax year that showed two thirds of Australian property investors claimed a total of $13.2bn in losses on property during the period. It has renewed debate over the government’s negative gearing policy, which essentially rewards investors for losing money by allowing them to claim a deduction on their interest payments and other costs associated with owning a lossmaking property. It is unlikely the government will abolish the tax benefits associated with negative gearing after the last attempt in 1985 that saw it quarantined for a period. The act allegedly caused rents to surge (although there is evidence to the contrary) resulting in a swift reversal of the decision. Nonetheless, it has highlighted the need for property investors to ensure their wealth creation strategies are in fact creating wealth. Some investors are drawn to negative gearing solely by the tax advantages, giving little consideration to the capital

growth potential of the property. Regardless of the tax benefits, while an investor holds negative property, they are losing money, putting them at financial risk. Other investors are prepared to absorb the losses, relying on speculative capital growth to achieve a return, which will only be realized at the point of sale. By comparison, positively geared property delivers a cash return to the investor immediately, providing a passive second income stream and the opportunity to fund their lifestyle and further investments. It the meantime, negative property investors must dig into their own pockets to supplement the shortfall in rent thereby reducing their monthly cash flow and reducing their capacity to funnel earnings into other investments. Furthermore, negative gearing benefits higher income earners (which are on higher tax rates) the greatest. Yet oddly, the majority of negatively geared property investors are in the middle income tax bracket. Investors considering negative gearing should proceed with caution. Assess your financial goals and investigate the strategies that are available to you.

Empire Oil and Gas NL is nearing first production from its Red Gully gas and condensate plant in the Perth Basin. Construction is complete and first could be as soon as the weekend. A recent site visit left us impressed with the size of the plant and the planning put into maximising the value of hydrocarbons produced from the wells. Empire intends to drill the Black Arrow 1, Charger 1 and Waugh 1 (Dunnart 2) wells in 2013/14.

These wells are subject to approvals so there is no specific schedule of drilling. The wells have a combined prospect size of 18.3 mmbls (net to EGO) and Empire estimate a net cost of ~$1m to drill all three wells. Hartley’s maintains a speculative buy recommendation with a price target of 1.9cps. Commissioning of the gas plant, cash flow, prospect definition and exploration will provide multiple catalysts over the next 12 months.

we’ll certainly go into interesting territory due to my talent of being an over-sharer!

The Roadshow will be pulling into the Pilbara next week, with performances at Karratha on June 13-14 and South Hedland on June 15-16. The roll call for Roadshow 2013 in the Pilbara includes comedians Ronny Chieng, Dave Callan, Daniel Townes, Justin Moorhouse and Nikki Britton. Daniel Townes has been on the comedy scene for a decade now, a regular on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Circuit and winning audiences worldwide. He has been busy researching our area and said he looks forward to joking with our audience. The stand up comedian tells stories about his own life experience and said he’ll relate his performance to our region. “I’m just a normal guy and Australia likes that,” Townes said. “I’m really looking forward to going to an area like the Pilbara.” Nikki Britton has toured comedy clubs around Australia and the

UK, and even studied “clown” at a prestigious theatre school in Paris. “I’m excited, I can’t wait to come up there!” Britton said. “It’s totally different to Sydney so I’m keeping my ideas open.” Britton’s observational and high-energy style of comedy is evident at her gigs, and her enthusiasm is infectious. An actor before a comedian, Britton studied comedy at the same place as many famous comedic actors such as Sasha Baron Cohen and Phil Burgers. You can expect almost anything from Britton as she jokes about anything and everything. “There’s a lot of stories from my life [in my show],” Britton said. “And it’s hopefully not offensive but we’ll certainly go into interesting territory due to my talent of being an over-sharer!” See the Melbourne International Comedy festival Roadshow website at www.comedyfestival. com.au for information on tour dates and ticketing.

Kevin Bloody Wilson packs out Pilbara Rude and crude singing comedian Kevin Bloody Wilson sold out performances in the Pilbara during his First of the Final Farewells tour last week. After 25 years of Kevin Bloody Wilson, the songs, swearwords and stories about Nigel could be packed away as Wilson looks to “have more time off”. The audience in Karratha responded well to Wilson’s very un-politically correct yarns, which included a popular song about life as a worker on the mines.

Starring: Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Olga Kurylenko, Tom Waits, Abbie Cornish. I thought I would judge this book by its cover. The all-star casting hooked me in, but unfortunately that’s the best part of the film. About half way through the movie my concentration lost focus and wandered on to arbitrary points on the walls around the room from the walls back to the screen. There were good moments and the premise is clever. Three friends (Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell) incur the wrath of a violent LA gangster (Woody Harrelson) by kidnapping his prized Shih Tzu dog. Aspiring screenwriter Marty (Farrell) has a brilliant screenplay called Seven Psychopaths he’s trying to write, but is unfortunately usually too hung over to make any real progress on it.

Meanwhile, Marty’s whack-job best friend Billy (Rockwell) has some great ideas for the story but he is reluctant to offer any input without an invitation into the making of the screenplay. Billy, a struggling actor, pays his rent by running a lucrative dognapping scam with Hans (Walken) and when Marty begins to fear that all his ideas have dried up, Billy shows up with a cute Shih Tzu stolen from the gangster (Harrelson). For the rest of the movie you can cue the dog hunt/gangster shootout cliché and I really did lose concentration, but I’m sure if you’re a gangster movie buff you could just about get through it. Christopher Walken is as usual at his best, and there’s some dark comedy peeking through that gives you a laugh, though the casting really is what pitches this film.

Wake up to a great breakfast It’s true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day but it’s probably the hardest to get right. I’m not a morning person and when I do get up there are other people to feed, bags to pack, hair to brush and often I forget about myself. The truth is, your day will be slower and harder if you don’t find a way to eat something soon after you wake up. It’s called breakfast because it’s about breaking the fast your body has been in while you have been sleeping. You need to eat the right things to get your body processes started and to kick start your metabolism. For breakfast I eat anything except toast or cereal. They both have a tendency to make me feel slow and sluggish and even though it seems like scrambling a couple of eggs is a lot more work, it really isn’t. When you try something new and add it to your routine, you simply get used to it, just like you did with the toast. Here are some ideas for a quick and easy breakfast. My recipe this week is something I cook on the weekends for my kids, they are hotcakes without the heavy white flour. Made with ricotta and oats these are filling, fluffy and will get the day started off right. Here are some more quick, wholesome breakfast ideas that will get your body set for a great day. Smoothies Take ½ cup milk, ½ cup water,

1 teaspoons of nuts (or lsa), 1 teaspoon of honey or maple syrup and ½ cup of your favourite fruit. Mix in fruits for different flavours and added variety. Scrambled eggs Two eggs with spinach, bacon, onion, tomato, mushrooms or anything you like. Fry your ingredients in the pan, mix your eggs with a little dash of milk, lower the heat and keep moving eggs around the pan for the perfect creamy scrambled eggs. Stuffed mushrooms Make these the night before and then just place them under the grill. Take large Portobello mushrooms and pack them with protein. Ham, spinach and feta are a great combination. Add pinenuts or fresh herbs. Have them ready in the fridge and pop under the grill to warm through. Fancy baked beans Take a normal tin of baked beans and heat them through adding even more protein with ham, bacon, chicken, mushrooms, spinach and asparagus. See if you can try a new breakfast this week, it will make a big difference to how you feel. Have a healthy week!

“All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast” - John Gunther

Ricotta and Oat Hotcakes These are so easy to make, you don’t need to mess around with lots of ingredients and you don’t even need to get your mixer out. Perfect for lazy weekends when you want a treat but can’t be bothered with a lot of mess in the kitchen. 125g extra light ricotta 1 tbs honey

21

1 cup rolled oats ½ cup milk

Place all ingredients in your blender and blend until it resembles a thin batter. Heat frypan and brush with coconut or olive oil. Pour small amounts of batter onto pan and lower heat to medium. When bubbles appear on top, flip hotcakes and cook for another 30 seconds. Serve with stewed fruit or fresh fruit, a drizzle of maple syrup and a sprinkle of your favourite nuts.

In the final two games Karratha also managed hard fought wins over Dampier and Paraburdoo with Jo Smythe and Nadia Smyth on fire in the outfield, taking out most balls that came their way. Kalisa Storey also put her

body on the line in short stop to close down the infield, but one of the most impressive efforts of the day was by Dampier’s outfielder Jamie-Lee Paterson, who played with a fractured hand. With the round robin series completed, Karratha took on Tom Price in the grand final in a game that was dominated by both teams’ pitchers and fielders. It was not until the fourth innings that the batters started swinging bigger, with Tom Price making a series of hits to the outfield. Had it not been for exceptional defensive fielding by Karratha’s Nikki Brough and Sharelle Clark, Tom Price would have posted much more than the solitary run for the innings. Karratha then stepped up to bat and responded by

taking a handy lead as Virginia Weighman hit a remarkable left field ball to get onto second base before Sharelle, Jo Smythe and Nikki all hit safe to help score a further seven runs. Karratha extended their lead a little further in a faster paced fifth innings with Nadia Smyth, Kyla, Bullie and Jo Smythe making good hits for the team to bring around three runners by the end of the dig. The final two innings saw a much tighter contest with most hits being closed down in the infield, allowing Karratha to defend their lead and eventually run out winners to claim their third consecutive DCA Shield. And despite the terrible weather, another successful DCA Shield was held thanks to the help of volunteers and sponsors Savannah Engineering, Toll Energy and Fielders Choice.

BOTTLED WATER IS A THING OF THE PAST

By Jenni Gates The family do a yearly pilgrimage to Exmouth and this year they upgraded from 4.5m tinny to a 6.8m bar-crusher. In the two weeks they were here, they fished practically every day, mainly on the west side. This year, they reported that sharks were not as prevalent as previous years. They caught lots of mackerel on Yozuri hydro magnums, with the kids getting stretched a few times on these hard-fighting fish. They then fished the 100m mark with squid baits and caught goldband, red emperor and other species. They also managed to land coral trout, spangled emperor and red throat emperor and yes, I am still talking about the juniors here. Parents Sean and

Bec were stoked with the new boat and their fishing results for the two weeks. The Exmouth game Fishing Club is holding its annual reef fishing competition called the Exmouth Classic on the weekend of June 14 to 16. This event is about targeting various reef species and assisting research as the Department of Fisheries takes samples and information from anglers. If you would like to be involved with this event get down to the clubhouse and ask manager Leith Holtzman for further information. Alternatively, if you would like to see what has been caught each day, drop down during the afternoons and you will see the fish weighed-in at the clubhouse.

of various species both in the canals and around the entrance. The best way to maximise your chances of getting results in this area is by using small soft plastic lures or sinking stick baits and walking around covering ground through the various tides. You can soak fresh bait, and the better time for this is the incoming tide or dawn and dusk. Whatever time you fish, make sure you have good footwear and are careful in this area. This week we have 7-year-old Serena and 6-year-old James Neal with some fabulous catches from a recent fishing trip off Exmouth. The two siblings were originally from Perth and love their fishing.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report Brrrr – how cold is it? Well, it seems cold to the local Exmouth crew. This is despite it being probably double the temperature of most other places south of us at present, it still seems cool, especially after the long extended summer temperatures experienced this year. The strong winds all up the coast have not helped with the fishing much either, and with gusts reaching over 25 knots at times, it has made it difficult for boating anglers. The wind doesn’t stop people chasing crabs though, and a few have been lurking up the creeks and in the mud surrounding the mangroves. Another good place for outdoor activity when it is cold and windy is the marina, and that has been ok too, with a few reports

After disappointment at last weekend’s cancellation of the Billfish Shootout competition, local fishers have another chance to pick up their rods at a series of Recfishwest family clinics. Recfishwest, the peak body for recreational fishers, will be holding community clinics in Dampier on June 8 and 9 and Port Hedland on June 15 designed to foster the joy of fishing in junior anglers and promote conservation. “Recfishwest has the view that fishing is a clean healthy environment and it gives kids the chance to spend time with family because for us fishing is about family,” said Kim Burton, who is a volunteer instructor with Recfishwest. Now into its ninth year touring the North West, the Recfishwest clinics also seek to promote sustainable fishing practices. “Recfishwest tries to get the message across that you don’t always fish to your bag limit, but rather catch enough for one or two feeds and a bit for grandma and granddad, but just don’t overdo it,” Kim said. “And in our view that gives you a good excuse to go fishing again the next day, especially when you are fishing in a fantastic environment like Dampier and Karratha and anywhere in the North West.” Kim said the clinics also teach children about bag and size limits, recognition of fish species, how to return undersized fish to the water safely and the importance of keeping marine environments clean and being sun-smart. And the messages are going down well with North West kids, who, Kim said, generally know more about fishing than their Perth counterparts. One young boy in Exmouth even knew that it was important to return a marlin to the water by towing it gently behind your boat

to allow oxygenated water to pass through its gills. Kim said children and family clinics were great places to start in promoting responsible fishing behaviour. “The kids at the clinics, hopefully they pass those messages on to other people they fish with and it creates a flow on effect to their parents and other family members,” he said. The Recfishwest community clinics will be held in Karratha’s King Bay Game Fishing Club on Saturday June 8 and the Nickol Bay Sportfishing Club on Sunday June 9 and at the Port Hedland Game Fishing Club on Saturday June 15. Call any of the fishing clubs or Kim on 0412 298 069 for more information.

Pilbara gets ready to rumble By Ben Leahy Boxing fans are being urged to get in quick for tickets to the Red Dirt Rumble tournament to be held at the Wickham Picture Gardens on Saturday June 15. The night will feature two hours of amateur bouts with boxing clubs bringing fighters from Wickham, Karratha, Broome, Port Hedland and Newman. There will be also live music and a bar at the event hosted by Wickham’s Peak 1 Boxing Club. As part of the inaugural North West Championship boxing series that runs through to September, the standard of boxing should be higher than that normally seen in the region.

Port of Call

For Massage Come and meet one of our sexy, sensual ladies in a discreet and relaxing environment. Every evening from 7pm till late. Monday - Friday days by appointment. Most major credit cards accepted.

With most Pilbara boxers previously having to fly to Perth

to take part in tournaments, the North West series kicked off this year to allow fighters to find local competition in their weight divisions. Red Dirt Rumble in Wickham is the second event in the series after the first round was held in Newman on May 25. Hosting the tournament also caps off a big first year for Wickham’s Peak 1 Boxing Club after they started the not-forprofit sporting group in May last year in a converted store room under the town’s squash courts. Since then, they have had 300 people come through the club and now have eight fighters registered to compete in amateur tournaments. This includes fly-in, fly-out worker Tony Hawkins, who recently fought in the US and is set to compete for Wickham in June 15’s Red Dirt Rumble.

Peak 1 Boxing Club assistant coach Claire Hale also said the junior talent in Wickham and Roebourne was very exciting and that the club wants to encourage more people of all ages to come try out the sport. Open four nights a week, Peak 1 runs a ladies only night focused on a cardio boxing session on Mondays, Tuesdays are skills and boxing technique nights, Wednesdays involve sparring sessions for registered fighters only and Thursdays are for cardio and conditioning training. Both Claire and her husband Nick are accredited as level one boxing coaches. For more information on Peak 1 Boxing Club visit the group’s Facebook page or call Claire on 0416 861 086. Red Dirt Rumble tickets are on sale at the Wickham News Agents for $30 each.

9A Crane Circle • The Bulls earned their hard-fought win in the U15s grand final

Bulls slam grand final By Tamara Binamat The Karratha Junior Basketball Association was gearing up for the pointy end of the season when Under 15s teams competed in the grand final last Thursday May 30. The Alley Oops finished on 20 points but the Bulls charged ahead at 34, winning by 14 points. Connor Austin from the Bulls was Most Valuable Player after scoring goal after goal. There were lots of very close games during the season in the boys Under 15s category and great development of all players. For the first time the KJBA

had a girls only competition and in the grand final 6, 7, 8, Pink defeated Blue 25 to 17 points. Toni from Blue took home MVP. There was a huge development of skills in the Under 11s age group this season. In the grand final Millars Well took it all the way home, defeating Baynton 24 to 3 with help from MVP Jordan Bushby. The Under 9s put on a spectacular show, ending with an exciting 4-4 draw that could not be split with extra time. Well done to the Black Allstars and Team Awesome,

especially the two MVPs Jesse Adams and Finnlay Simpson. The Under 9s age group played modified rules to ensure they learnt the game of basketball and everyone had a fair go. Deb English tirelessly coordinated this fantastic season of firsts for the Karratha Junior Basketball Association. “Thanks to the coordinators of each age group, the committee and all of the parents who helped out with coaching, umpiring and scoring,” Deb said. “Without everyone’s support we would not have had the fantastic competition that we did.”

Dogged competitors follow Red Dog’s footsteps By Ben Leahy

A team of Karrathabased Kiwis have braved howling winds and rain to take out the inaugural Red Dog Festival relay held across two-days of the WA Day long weekend on June 1 and 2. The five-member Wheelans Warriors team covered the 360km course from Dampier’s Red Dog statue out to Millstream National Park in 12hrs12mins to beat home the Rusty 274s and the 4smiths. Made up of Charlotte Hoetjes, Jack Martin, Mark Jory, Peter Cottle and Jonathan Sherbourne, the Wheelans Warriors were among 76 competitors and 14 teams to tackle the relay that included run, road bike, mountain bike, walk, swim, 4WD and paddle legs. And while most would expect the Pilbara’s blazing sun to be the biggest problem facing endurance athletes in the region, competitor Sally Smith from team 4smiths found herself reaching for the fleece jumper. “The conditions were unbelievably tough, I have not been so cold in Karratha, it was absolutely freezing,” Sally said. “The best thing was the actual water temperature during the swim leg, you could have stayed

in the water all day [compared to getting back out into the cold wind].” For Red Dog Festival organisers, the unseasonable weather was a nasty and unexpected hurdle as they hope to build the event into an annual festival that attracts local and interstate visitors. But it didn’t put off competitors, like Sally, who said the event could grow into a much larger attraction, especially with the return of the sun in future years. “It was fantastic – really well run considering the logistics to get everyone to Dampier and Millstream and back,” Sally said. “We had a great time.” Steve McLeod from second placed team, Rusty 274’s, also said the relay was fun as it included picturesque mountain bike and walking trails and an overnight stop at Millstream station. “The bike legs were great, the catering was fantastic – it was really good and got a lot of different people from throughout the community involved,” Steve said. With the Rusty 274’s being named after the six-member team’s collective age, Steve said the guys would be keen to compete again next year as the Rusty 280’s.

And, who knows, they might keep returning for future Red Dog Festivals until they become known as the Rusty 300-plusses, Steve said. Yet, despite the good reviews, there were still a few hitches with the relay. These included a dispute arising from some teams using a car to shield their road bike riders as they rode into the wind, and a misdirected sign on the walking leg that left seven teams temporarily lost. But for Sally and Steve, the foundations are there for a bigger, better and sunnier Red Dog Festival in 2014.
