NEON RUST & RUINS I've always been a fan of old cars. Something to do with the smell of oil and damp leather which is strangely addictive. Anyone who likes old cars probably becomes familiar with scrapyards as a source of spare parts. In my case they became second homes. And, as with many other baby boomers, neon signs grabbed my imagination in early youth through TV and films, mostly American. They beguiled us into a land of plenty with bigger cars, brighter lights and the Wild West. Put these factors together and Bingo! - a scrapyard of broken neon in the American desert. Ruins have always been popular with artists and romantics. They were considered an essential component of the sublime in landscape. For me they are just irresistible and demand to be explored. Nature, though not obvious in these paintings, is the most important element. A rusty car engine is a thing of beauty long after it has given up on its original function. Nature breaks everything down in the most harmonious way and as we know will triumph over us in the end. This may just be nostalgia for the past, but I prefer to think of it as a reflection on a lost civilisation called the 20th century. John James
