This one is a great issue, Piloters. We’ve beefed up the editorial content a little and given the book a bit of a facelift with a redesign. Look for other small changes in the layout and design to come in the future, and be sure to check out our new website at PiedmontLakesPilot.com.

I have come across many new challenges in the venture of producing this handy boating index of the Piedmont region. I’ve now had a chance to meet some of our partnering businesses and local experts both through general business conversation and a weekend at the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Boat Show in Charlotte earlier this year.

These minute experiences have confirmed what I already figured to be true: Our local boating community is more tight knit than your average mooring line. Everyone knows everyone from here or there — old job, former boss, that guy bought my old boat, etc. etc.

The community is a thriving and welcoming space for newbies.

Others, like Nathan Fabbricatore, have been in this space their whole life. I met Nate and his twin brother Nic at the Mid-Atlantic Boat Show and these are great guys. They’re young, personable, kind and welcoming. I’m sure that says a lot for the care and customer service they offer out on the water with Sea Tow of Lake Norman. Read more about how Nate got to the position he’s in and why he does it on pages 54-55.

Following that feature article is another bit of content on a lake we heard about almost exclusively at you guessed it the Mid-Atlantic Boat Show. Our article by Annie Keough about 10 ways to spend a day out in the Lake James area has got me ready to launch the kayak and paddle out to a primitive camping site along the Long Arm Peninsula in this cozy spring weather. Learn about access and activities in the serene area above Lake Hickory on pages 56-57.

Elsewhere in this issue, we feature the beloved SandBar Marina & Grill with a not-to-be-missed Wine, Wing and Well Wednesday special. Plus, we bring back a Gus Gustafson feature on windy fishing memorializing his great contributions to local fishing in the Carolinas.

SandBar Marina & Grill, a lakeside food, drink and docking destination on Lake Hickory, offers family and friends a place to relax after or during a long day on the water.

Located on a peaceful stretch just off of the main lake, the restaurant serves a number of food options every day of the week save for Tuesday, with a brunch menu available on Sundays until 2 p.m.

On March 21, the SandBar unveiled its new menu for the coming spring and summer seasons. New options include bánh mì steak and baja chicken tacos; chicken pesto, Italian and margarita flatbreads; a Southwest chicken salad; and entrees like the El Sandbar carne asada.

Don’t panic when you don’t see any wraps on the menu; any sandwich can still be ordered as a wrap.

After (or before) your meal, venture over to the wine shop, which features options from all over the world to wash your food down. The SandBar hosts monthly wine dinners with a five-course food-pairing menu so be sure to ask about that for your next date night.

Enjoy the convenience of purchasing your SandBar Marina merchandise, nautical novelties, locally made products, limited boating supplies and premium or regular non-ethanol fuel all in one place.

SandBar offers many activities, discounts and events throughout the week, including Wine, Wing and Well Wednesdays, during which customers get $.80 wings, $2 Coors Light and Miller Light bottles, $5 well liquor drinks and $10 house wine bottles.

The bar also serves a bevy of signature cocktails that rotate by the season. This spring’s cocktail menu includes the Tequila Mockingbird, Hickory Iced Tea, Surfer on the Lake, and Berry Happy Mojito, while the frozen options consist of the piña colada, slushy margarita, strawberry

daiquiri, Sex on the SandBar, and mudslide.

The outdoor dining area overlooks the beautiful waters of Lake Hickory and the restaurant’s 30 boat slips allow for a convenient dock-and-dine opportunity. Customers can regularly enjoy music from a variety of live bands and musicians throughout the boating season.

“This is a hidden gem,” said one happy customer in a Google review. “Enjoyed a relaxing visit on the outdoor patio for a beautiful afternoon. We ate fish and chips, turkey club, Philly cheesesteak, and Cajun chicken alfredo. We had the most delicious fries, they were seasoned to perfection We sat for a while visiting and enjoying the music overhead.”

SandBar is a private bar, but you won’t have to jump through hoops to get in; adults can register for a 10year membership during service hours with a valid ID, telephone and $1.

This Is Your Captain Speaking Meet Nathan Fabbricatore with Sea Tow Lake Norman

Nathan Fabbricatore grew up around boats; throughout his childhood, his family was on them all the time. However, seeing as how they lived in New Hampshire, it was always freshwater boats, and hurricanes were never any concern.

Fast forward to September 2020, with Hurricane Sally bearing down on Destin, Florida, where Fabbricatore was stationed as a relatively new employee of the marine assistance and salvage company Sea Tow. It was clear then that he had come a long way from his carefree boating days in New Hampshire.

“That was a crazy experience, actually staying in a house down there, where that hurricane is passing right over top of you,” he recalled to Piedmont Lakes Pilot during a recent interview. “I mean, it was a little frightening, but a really incredible experience.”

It was Nathan’s first time tying a boat down to ride out a hurricane, and he was successful in that mission, but the real work didn’t start until the storm had passed.

“The aftermath of storms is just insane; you see boats upside down in backyards and swimming pools, up underneath back porches, out on the main road of a highway. You see it all and it’s really an eye opener,” he said.

“One nice thing is, obviously we’re just recovering property, but it’s amazing to get to be a part of helping out people in tough times. No one wants to go through a hurricane and lose their house, but it’s nice to be able to help out and do some kind of relief.”

Hired on with Sea Tow locally in 2019, Nathan spent his first three years with the company splitting his time between the Lake Norman offices in spring and summer and the Destin/Pensacola offices in Florida during the colder months.

For the last two years, he’s been working on Lake Norman and Lake Wylie year-round, where he patrols the popular spots and keeps his team on call to assist Sea Tow members with any trouble they may be having on the water, from running out of gas to dead batteries to unexplained breakdowns.

While the local calls don’t necessarily get as intense as the hurricane salvage work does, one thing stays constant for Nate: his passion for helping people.

“I’ve actually found out that what fulfills me the most in this job is that it can be the worst day of someone’s boating experience, but I seem to always make that customer smile,” he said. “Even though they’re just having a bad day, they’re on the water. Getting to spread that joy of just loving to be out on the water is a big thing for me.”

Having gotten his first North Carolina Boater Education Card, aka boater’s license, at age 11, Nathan was already well familiar with Lake Norman when he got his first job at the Safe Harbor Westport marina at 16 years old. He worked there for five years, beginning on the docks, then with the service department, then towing boats.

Having acquired his captain’s license through the US Coast Guard during that time, he decided it was time to put it to use. He worked one summer on Lake Norman as captain of the Charlotte Cycleboat, which he called “a blast of a job,” before joining on with Sea Tow in 2019.

These days, as assistant manager and captain with Sea Tow Lake Norman, Fabbricatore is part of a team of five staff members who rotate on-call shifts while he keeps himself available 24/7, 365.

He and his team members regularly patrol the hotspots around Lake Norman and Lake Wylie (they also keep a boat ready to go for calls on Mountain Island Lake), spending much of their downtime during the week doing boat maintenance, organizing their gear and training for whatever call might come in.

“There’s always something to do and we try to stay busy, but more than anything it’s about being close by the boat at all times, ready to go for when a call comes in, because one thing we’ve worked really hard at is having the best response times on the lake,” he said.

The company keeps boats strategically located at Peninsula Yacht Club in Cornelius, Safe Harbor Westport in Denver, The Boat Rack in Catawba, and at Sherrills Ford to optimize response times.

Over the last five years, Sea Tow Lake Norman/Lake Wylie’s average response time has remained at around 30 minutes, exemplary for a coverage area their size.

“We’re not a pizza delivery service, but we get to our customers pretty fast,” he said, laughing.

So what are the calls the Sea Tow team spends the most time responding to?

“During the spring, usually they’re using their boats for the first time this year, and they’ll need a tow because the water pump will fail and they’ll overheat, so we’ll tow them to their repair facility or back to the trailer,” he explained. “Or even just something as simple as a dead battery or they run out of fuel — they didn’t fill it up before they went out or their fuel gauge stopped working from the year before — and we’ll have to bring them out some fuel.”

“You can’t prepare for anything or everything,” Nathan said. “So that’s why I tell people, get a Sea Tow membership and it’s just a good peace of mind on the water, because if something does happen on the boat, you can always call us and we’ll be there to respond.”

From the family-friendly lakes of New Hampshire to the hurricane-ravaged shores of the Florida Gulf and back up to North Carolina, the goal for Nate has always been to help people have fun and feel secure on the water.

“We are a business, but I don’t look at people as a paycheck,” he explained. “We look at them as fellow boaters in this nice, niche community on Lake Norman and Lake Wylie. We’d like to just be a part of it in any way we can by just being a friendly face on the water.”

Ten Ways to Spend

Nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains between Morganton and Marion, fed by three rivers, Lake James is the up-and-coming lake destination in North Carolina for good reason.

Created when Duke Energy dammed the Catawba River, Linville River and Paddy Creek from 1916-1923, the lake takes up 6,510 acres with 150 miles of shoreline separating it from the 3,743-acre state park that surrounds it.

HIKING

Paddy’s Creek offers 14 miles of mountain biking trails along with the 11-mile West Wimba Loop and East Wimba Loop, plus the 2.8-mile Upper and Lower Tindo Loop bike trails.

SWIM BEACH

Paddy’s Creek swim beach offers visitors a sandy beach experience with mountain views and a designated swimming area. Paddy’s Creek reopens to the public on May 1 this year.

Thirty campsites on the Long Arm Peninsula are accessible only by boat for $15 per night. Each campsite has a fire pit, picnic table and a 24-by-16 foot tent pad. There is no running water available at the paddle-in campsites so campers must bring their own drinking water, along with water for dishes and other uses if needed. Toilet facilities are placed throughout the camping area.

BOATING

Lake James has two boat ramps for powerboats, sailboats and smaller vessels at Hidden Cove and Canal Bridge. Boat rentals are also available for campers only on weekends starting April 6 through Memorial Day, when rentals will start seven days a week.

PICNICKING

Picnic sites are available along the Catawba River and Paddy’s Creek areas, equipped with picnic tables, outdoor grills and trash bins. Restrooms are located within walking distance of all picnic sites.

FISHING

Here’s why you’re really here. Lake James State Park is renowned for its array of fish, specifically its largemouth bass population. Fishermen can also look out for coldwater fish like walleye and smallmouth bass from April to October. May through July will feature crappie, while bluegill, robin and catfish can be caught all year long.

BIRDWATCHING

A variety of birds flock to Lake James in the winter, offering the perfect pastime for visitors in the cold months. Different types of gulls such as ring-billed, Bonaparte’s

gulls and a small number of herring gulls are known to fly over the lake looking for small fish. Other bird species include double-crested cormorants, common loons and a variety of ducks like waterfowl buffleheads, mallards, ringnecked ducks, gadwalls, redheads and wigeon all stop over Lake James during the migration season, according to Friends of Lake James State Park.

CANOEING AND KAYAKING

Water activity rentals like canoeing and kayaking are available for a small fee at the Paddy’s Creek concession stand, which is open seasonally.

Fishin’ with Capt. Gus: The Wind is Your Friend

Flowers are in bloom, and college basketball games occupy all the TVs at every sports bar. This can only mean one thing: It’s time to get back on the water in the Carolinas.

While the weather warms up, fishermen have already taken notice that the wind takes some time to die down. Though the summer brings still air, the windiest times of year in North Carolina are from February through the end of April, with the breezy season lasting well into May.

This is not a problem; in fact, wind activates fish and makes it easier to lure them to a hook.

Since fish do not have eyelids, they don’t squint like people do when the sun shines in their eyes. In order to shield their eyes from the brightness, fish seek shade

and cover near objects above and below the surface — or they simply swim to deeper water on calm days. Conversely, on windy days, the ripples and waves help diffuse the sun’s rays and allow fish to see their prey much easier.

Agitated water created by strong winds gets fish moving; particularly forage fish that get stressed in rough water. Sensing this, bass and other predator fish are attracted to the area, and they dine on the hapless victims even when they’re not hungry. That’s why savvy anglers cast to the windward shore where the fish are active rather than to the calmer leeward side of a body of water.

Strong winds create waves that stir up the bottom and cloud the water. This turbulence makes an excellent place to hide from the sun and provides an ambush point from which forage fish can be snared. On days when the wind is high, mud lines form off clay points and often extend long distances offshore. In addition, the area around shoals becomes discolored, which provides another opportunity for fish to hide in.

There are lots of good reasons not to fish the windy side of a body of water. One is the difficulty in trying to keep your balance while casting and maneuvering the boat at the same time — not to mention dealing with backlashes or constantly working the trolling motor and taking on spray and water.

It is no wonder that so many opt to fish the calm side of the lake where fishing is easier, but catching them might not be quite as good. Here are some pointers for fishing on a windy day:

• For optimum boat control, run the trolling motor into the wind.

• To prevent the propeller from cavitating, set the trolling motor lower in the water.

• To minimize hang-ups on docks and other above water structures, make shorter and lower casts.

• To keep the line tight and reduce bowing while retrieving line, position the rod tip low to the water.

• Don’t let backlashes ruin your fishing trip. Use heavier lures and/or tighten the tension on the spool of a bait casting reel. If black lashing (tangling) issues continue, switch to spinning tackle.

• When practical, cast lures with the wind.

• Wear your PFD while fishing.
