X X X Sound Producing (a) A vessel 39.4 ft must, at a minimum, have some means of Devices making an “efficient” sound signal - (i.e. handheld air horn, athletic whistle - Human voice/ sound not acceptable).
X X (b) A vessel 39.4 ft (12 meters) or greater, must have a sound signaling appliance capable of producing an efficient sound signaI, audible for 1/2 mile with a 4 to 6 seconds duration. In addition, must carry on board a bell with a clapper (bell size not less than 7.9 inches - based on the diameter of the mouth)

The Beaufort Wind Scale
In 1805, Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort of the British Royal Navy developed a 13° scale to measure the strength of wind at sea. Updated and modernized, the scale is still used for approximating wind speed. Speed at sea is measured in knots, with one knot equal to 1.15 miles-per-hour. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June thru November.

Located on Henderson Road off Exit 28 from I-77, the restaurant and bar offers an unparalleled outdoor patio overlooking a gentle alcove escape from Lake Norman’s busy waters. While boats are welcome to tieup at one of the many docking spaces, folks can also park in Hello, Sailor’s large parking lot next to Holiday Marina.
Hello, Sailor’s owners Joe and Katy Kindred — powerhouses of the Charlottearea restaurant scene known for staples like Kindred and Milkbread — modeled the restaurant and bar after a modern fish camp with a focus on chef-driven dishes.
The Kindreds opened the spot in the former home of Rusty Rudder back in 2017 and were able to fill the shoes of that popular spot by creating their own must-visit vibes. Hello, Sailor made Eater’s list of America’s Best New Restaurants in 2018 and has continued to garner acclaim since, most recently named one of Charlotte Observer’s Best Restaurant on Lake Norman in February.

Skiing Signals & Regulations
Water skiing is exhilarating! But like any water sport, it requires some skill and knowledge as our illustrated assistant demonstrates.
Skiing is permitted only between sunrise and sunset, and skiers must wear flotation devices. Ski vests are recommended because they are more bouyant. Members of the American Water Ski Association holding first class, expert or master ratings are exempt from this flotation requirement. Note that our assistant, while very cool, is not exempt.
Remember, skiing is a team effort! A boat pulling a skier must have an obsserver in addition to the operator, or be equipped with a wide-angle, rear-view mirror.
The hand signals below are a standard set of signals adopted by The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators to make skiing safer and more enjoyable.

After 30 years in the boat business, Dana Martin branched off in October 2002 to open her own business, Lake Norman Power Sports, a Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) franchise that today is the largest Sea-Doo dealership in the Carolinas.
Dana brought her daughters Susan and Joie with her, and the business was recognized by BRP as US Regional Southeast Dealer of the Year in its first year in business. The trio continues to run the business together, reaching a milestone in January 2024 when they opened a brand-new facility on Chartown Drive in Cornelius.
Having run Lake Norman Power Sports for 23 years now, these ladies know their stuff, which is important when dealing in Sea-Doo products.
As a Canadian personal watercraft brand that was launched in 1968, a follow-up on JosephArmand Bombardier Ski-Doo snowmobiles, over time Sea-Doo has become as recognizable a brand name as Band-Aid, sometimes serving as a stand-in for the term “jet ski.”
Brand recognition is great, but when folks walk in the door interested in buying a Sea-Doo watercraft, they often have no idea about the wide range of vehicles that the brand has to offer.
“When I’m on the floor, I break it down into segments,” described Susan Newsom. “I say, ‘Let’s look at your segments; do you want to go fast? Do you want luxury? There are so many models that Sea-Doo offers and people don’t know about them.”
And if Sea-Doo builds it, Lake Norman Power Sports sells it, so we thought we’d take a look at some of the segments that Newsom described to give just a glimpse at the range that Sea-Doo has.
PERFORMANCE
Sea-Doo’s Performance line is for the adrenaline junkies looking for explosive speed paired with flawless control and enough comfort and precision to keep you moving through the chop.
Sea-Doo has rolled out four new 2025 performance models this year, including the GTR-X 300, which features an exceptionally versatile design that centers performance.
RECREATION
The GTI models are reliable and fuel-efficient for folks who just want a smooth ride and predictable steering.
The GTI is designed for long-distance cruising, including ample storage to pack all your camping gear or whatever it is you might need to haul. The GTI SE offers more comfort, more comfort and a booming sound system to keep you entertained on the ride and when you get there.
RECREATION LITE
The Spark models are designed more compact (and therefore more affordable) crafts that can be towed to your access point by most sedans.
Starting at $7,000, the Spark has a highly efficient engine and low-cost maintenance, making it the perfect entry point for many folks looking to get their first Sea-Doo.
TOW SPORTS
The 2025 Sea-Doo Wake features a Rotax 1630 ACE - 170, the most powerful naturally aspirated Rotax engine ever placed on a Sea-Doo watercraft, which provides plenty of torque for towing.
The craft fits up to three passengers, making for a great time out on the water for a pair or trio looking to rip, ski or board. Check out the Wake’s tow-focused features like Ski Mode, a LinQ Ski Pylon and Board Rack.
SPORT FISHING
At a fraction of the cost of a sport-fishing boat, Sea-Doo offers a Fishpro line that will also take far less maintenance, prep time or clean time, leaving you more time to focus on catching fish.
Four 2025 models include the Scout, Sport, Trophy, and APEX 300, the last of which includes a pop-in Swivel Seat to bring you above the water.
TOURING
This would be the luxury that Newsom was referring to. Built for comfort and distance, the GTX allows buyers to choose from three engine options so you can settle on your perfect combo of power and efficiency.
PONTOONS
The Sea-Doo Switch is the customizable pontoon boat that was released in 2022 and has been all the rage with boating families like the one Newsom grew up in.
“It’s such a new concept. I mean, even if you’ve never driven a watercraft before, you could drive this boat,” she told us in 2024. “But it’s just so different, and we’re so excited about it that we just want everybody to see it.”
That’s why, on the third Thursday of each month, the Lake Norman Power Sports team hosts demo days, meeting customers at the Peninsula Yacht Club to test drive the Sea-Doo Switch.
Sea-Doo offers the Switch, Switch Sport, Switch Cruise, Switch Cruise Limited and the Switch Fish, each with their own special functions.
Newsom and just about everybody who works at the Chartown facility knows the ins and outs of the Sea-Doo crafts and other BRP products on the lot. Each team member has dedicated their professional life to learning those details, from the Can-Am Defender utility vehicle to the new Sea-Doo Switch pontoon boat (Susan owns one of each).
“There’s almost nothing that we don’t know about the product because we spend eight to 10 hours a day on this stuff, and a lot of us own them,” said Newsom. “I mean, we’re enthusiasts, we’re owners, and we’re sellers.”

Where to access, explore, eat, play — and maybe see a ghost — on High Rock Lake

In 1948, two boys were walking along the shores of High Rock Lake when they saw a lantern winding through the trees. It was dark, so the boys didn’t think it was strange that they couldn’t see who was bearing the lantern — until they drew closer.
The boys gasped when they realized that no one was carrying the light, which bounced up and down 4 feet above the ground. Running to their house, the frightened kids found their mother on the porch, also staring wide-eyed at the floating light.
The Salisbury Post reports that the “jacko-lantern” lights have been seen along the lakeshore several times since, sometimes levitating to the treetops.
The lights are just part of the folklore surrounding North Carolina’s second largest lake. There are stories of ghostly cabins and the region’s Hmong people tell tales about spectral water dragons that can cause people to drown in shallow water or suffer from malevolent dreams.
Spooky occurrences are not surprising on a lake so rich in history. High Rock Lake, which boasts 356 miles of shoreline in Rowan and Davidson counties, was created in 1927 by the construction of the High Rock Dam at a narrow gorge in the Uwharrie Mountains. Both dam and lake take their names from the 889-foot-tall High Rock Mountain, the highest peak in the Uwharries.
The dam harnessed the power of the Yadkin River to generate electricity for the Aluminum Company of America’s (ALCOA) smelting operations. In 2007, ALCOA sold the hydroelectric facilities to Cube Hydro Carolinas. The dam, now operated by Eagle Creek Renewable Energy (ECRE), generates around 141,660 megawattshours of electricity each year — enough to power 13,621 homes.
Since the dam’s construction, surrounding communities including Lexington and Salisbury have enjoyed economic benefits derived through lake recreation. High Rock Lake is a destination for sailing, power boating and fishing. The 163-mile Yadkin River State Trail adds canoes and paddle boats rentals to High Rock Lake’s growing flotilla.
The High Rock Lake Life website (highrocklakelife.com) recommends eight spots to launch your boat and find fun on the water.
The York Hill Yadkin River Access, just off Interstate 85, is the northern most access to High Rock Lake. From here, boaters can head upstream toward Boone’s Cave or downstream to the lake.
Buddle Creek Boat & Fishing Access on Holloway Church Road is open year-round. From this access, boaters can reach the Abbott’s Creek section of the lake.
Flat Swamp Public Access boasts a boat ramp and a swimming area. A buoy fence keeps swimmers and boaters separated.
The newest access on the lake, Highway 47 Access, is east of the Highway 47 bridge over Abbott’s Creek.
Goodman Lake Road Fishing Access, sits on a narrow finger of High Rock Lake and is one of the less crowded places to launch a boat.
In addition to a public launch location, Tamarac Marina on Bringle Ferry Road offers a campground and restaurant.
The Southmont Access Ramp is located on Abbott’s Creek in Southmont. Locals say it’s the most popular ramp on the lake.
North Carolina Wildlife Access Ramp off Bringle Ferry Road is operated by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
PARKS NEAR HIGH ROCK LAKE
Yadkin River Park is centered around the Historical Wil-Cox Bridge. Built in 1924, the bridge spans 1,299 feet across the Yadkin. Once the main highway between Greensboro and Charlotte, the old bridge invites visitors to traverse the river along several miles of hiking and biking trails. The park also contains the remains of an earthen Civil War fort.
Boone’s Cave Park offers 6 miles of hiking trails through a rolling forest of mixed hardwoods. Forty-six acres of the park are designated a Natural Heritage Site, host to wildflowers and trees normally found only in the Appalachians. Daniel Boone’s family moved to this area in 1755, when Daniel was 15, and reportedly lived in the cave on the park property.
Eagle Point Nature Preserve offers a series of trails that loop through a combination of pine and hardwood forests, lush bogs and hidden coves on High Rock Lake. Here visitors can see bald eagles, great blue herons and egrets.
The 83-acre Dunn’s Mountain Park sits on a granite dome that was once quarried for a unique type of granite called “Salisbury Pink.” At over 1,000 feet, Dunn’s Mountain offers views of downtown Salisbury to the west and the Uwharrie Mountains to the east.

Now that summer is in full swing, let’s discuss hot weather fishing. While most anglers are waiting for the fall cool down, some are catching plenty of fish in August. But, even those who brave the heat, choose the times and places they fish in order to maximize their comfort and improve their catch rate. To help, here are a few reminders that might make it easier to catch a limit.
What types of fish are biting?
During the heat of the day, bream, perch and catfish are easy targets. Bream, (sunfish) love warm weather and can be found swimming along most shorelines that have a combination of shade and sunlight. Catfish cruise a little deeper, but are extremely active during the summer. White perch, the mainstay for family vacation fishing trips, gather in large schools and bite feverishly throughout the day.
What are the best times to fish?
Dawn, dusk and cloudy days are prime times to catch fish in August.
Those who fish after dark can try their luck for bass, hybrids, stripers and crappie. They are attracted to lights that shine directly into the water at night. Bass hybrid and striper fishermen look for lighted boat docks, and those targeting crappie, hang lanterns and LED Lights over the sides of their boats.
What are the best baits to use?
• Bream - bread/dough balls, worms, crickets, and popping bugs
• Catfish - prepared stink baits, chicken parts, fresh cut fish and live bream
• White perch - small minnows, jigs, spoons, Sabiki rigs
• Bass - large minnows, top water lures, soft plastics,
swim and crank baits.
• Stripers/Hybrid striped bass - live shad, herring, shiners, roadrunners, bucktails, jigging spoons and Alabama rigs
• Crappies - crappie minnows, small jigs
What is the best tackle to use?
When fishing for bream, perch, channel catfish and crappie, a light action six-to-seven foot spinning outfit, loaded with six to ten pound test line, is perfect. Bass, stripers, blue and flathead catfish are larger and require stronger tackle and line.
Where are the best places to fish?
• Bridge Pilings - crappie, bass and stripers
• Submerged brush/deep-water attractors - bass, crappie
• Piers and boat houses - all species
• Channel Markers - bass
• Boat basins - bass, catfish and bream
• Shorelines, fallen trees or overhanging limbsbass and bream
• Deep coves and pockets - white perch and spotted bass.
Tips from Capt. Gus: For those who want to catch something really big this summer and can only fish from the shore, give carp fishing a try. There are lots of ten to twenty pounders in the lake. Best baits are dough balls and kernels of canned corn fished on the bottom.
