THE JOSHUA WEINZWEIG REVIEW OF WRITING 2020-2021
INTRODUCTION TO IMMORALITY ____________________________________________________________ by Monica Zhu, Grade 12 Here, wing flaps are idle, nectar is plentiful, the aura stretches and straightens. Her neck twists by sudden infatuation, the curved tendons straining against their bindings. The chin tilts upwards, towards the rose with the heaviest blush. Eyes crinkled in cordiality, she gazes but does not see. Fingertips hover and buzz above the powdered buds, as the head falls over heels into the pit perfumed of petals, drugged and drooling from honeyed beckonings. Bother not to halt her wander into the fae’s enshrouding mist. Thick, muted vines slither soundlessly, slurping their tongues slathered with saliva. The thorns shrouded under simper with glee, they engorge their fangs into her soft petal skin, drawing the rubies that flow steadily within. The whites of her eyes strain against their casings, to find a promise of heaven above. Heart blinking heavily, soul at a standstill, she prays, prays, prays. Until her irises are glossed over and grey, the house of God shining within.
