From the Editor’s Desk

Dear Old Girls In February this year I had the privilege of teaching Mathematics at PHSG while one of the permanent Maths teachers recovered from an injury. That experience will undoubtedly be one of my most treasured memories for the rest of my life.

As intimidating as it may have been at first when I realised I was now the teacher and no longer the pupil, being in room 110 again – one of the very rooms I used to sit in for Maths when I attended PHSG – brought back floods of memories. My most special moment, however, was attending assembly the first morning I started teaching. As the girls started singing the morning hymn, that resonating, soulful sound brought tears to my eyes. It was then that I realised why so many Old Girls are drawn back to PHSG to teach. I think I am finally starting to understand why so many Old Girls exude so much love when they talk about their beloved high school.

As challenging as it may have been at times, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment, especially being able to walk into the staffroom without feeling out of place (as everyone knows that the staffroom at PHSG is the staff’s holy ground – girls are strictly forbidden!).

PHSG is revered by many, and old and current girls as well as the school itself often make the news for their achievements.

In this year’s newsletter, there are numerous features on the school and old girls who are doing very well for themselves – be sure to look out for the articles!

Another great achievement for Girls’ High is the completion of the Astro project. The opening ceremony was indeed memorable, with Penny McNair officially opening the new field – what a proud moment it must have been for Penny, as the field was named after her in acknowledgment of her many years of sheer dedication to the school. Following her retirement, Penny will be dearly missed– she has always been very passionate about PHSG and has had such an impact on so many girls’ lives, mine included.

As always, the OGA would love you to support our stall at the Spring Fair this year as well as to join us for the Social Evening and Reunion Luncheon in October. We start planning these events many months before so that you can enjoy the day and/ or weekend to the fullest without a worry in the world except enjoying old friends’ company and reminiscing over your school days and catching up.

Many of the OGA branches in South Africa and also overseas have their own ‘mini-reunions’ and get-togethers on an annual (sometimes more regular) basis. If you are interested in attending these functions, please contact the Old Girls heading up the various branches (details can be found on page 2).

The OGA Facebook page has grown in leaps and bounds thanks to Leigh Grindley-Ferris, so I invite you to visit the page to keep up-to-date with the goings-on at the school and with Old Girls around the world – this is also a wonderful platform to re-connect with school friends and keep track of upcoming events organised by the OGA. Take some time to follow us at: http:// www.facebook.com/PHSGOGA Lastly, we are working very hard to get the OGA database fully functional. In order to do this, we need the most up-to-date information from all Old Girls. I urge you to help us with this transitional process from paper to computer, by visiting the new PHSG webpage and clicking on the OGA tab and then the ‘Contact Us’ tab. On this page you will find a form that can be completed online and submitted to the OGA directly. This will enable us to send out announcements of events, news and important dates for each year to Old Girls worldwide, allowing you to plan accordingly for the events well in advance!

DATES TO REMEMBER SPRING FAIR 2014: Saturday 30 AUGUST 2014 As usual, the OGA stall was a huge success at the 2013 Spring Fair. Teddies were sold out within the first couple of hours and we had to take orders for extras; cupcakes flew off of our tables and many an Old Girl came to support Spring Fair and the OGA stall. This year promises to bring back some yummy goodies that Old Girls have missed for the past two years. As always, your support is appreciated so come and visit our ever-growing OGA stall this year and be sure to come hungry! Donations of home-baked cakes, sweets, biscuits, fudge etc., will be welcome on the day at the OGA stall. We would greatly appreciate donations of old books as our second-hand book sale at the OGA stall is always a huge hit.

There will be a large range of teddies for sale again this year. Please be sure to come early as these teddies always sell fast.

SOCIAL EVENING: Friday 17 OCTOBER 2014 2013s Great Gatsby themed Social Evening was definitely one to remember. Many Old Girls dressed the part and looked very stylish. There were also a number of Old Girls who socialised into the early hours of the morning, catching up on the years gone by.

The OGA is always happy to see so many Old Girls enjoying themselves at occasions such as the Social Evenings and so this year, the Social Evening will be held on Friday 17 October 2014 at 18:30 in the school hall and surrounding quads. There will be a cash bar available on the night, as well as credit card facilities. However, please bring along some cash as there may be raffle tickets for sale and donations to the OGA are always welcome.

ALL Old Girls are invited to attend, including any who do not fall into the 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th+-year reunion classes. We would also love to see any Old Girl who did not matriculate at PHSG. Attendance is strictly by booking only, so please contact your convenor (or the convenor for the year closest to your

BOARDER REUNION: Friday 17 OCTOBER 2014 For those who attended the boarder reunion, I am sure it was a weekend to remember! The current boarders were very surprised that the Old Girls could out-party them and could get up to so much mischief!

The reunion weekend this year will again be open to old boarders who wish to sleep over in the hostels for the Friday night. Breakfast will be supplied and you will have the opportunity to chat to current boarders in the hostels.

The Boarder Old Girls are more than welcome to attend the Social Evening on Friday 17 October 2014 as well as the AGM, walkabout and sports events on the Saturday morning, but please take note that only Boarder Old Girls celebrating their 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th and 50th+-year reunions may attend the luncheon on Saturday 18 October 2014.

PHSG OLD GIRLS’ ASSOCIATION AGM: Saturday 18 OCTOBER 2014 The Annual General Meeting of the OGA will be held at the school at 09:00 and followed by tea in the quad. All members are invited to attend.

GUIDED TOUR OF THE SCHOOL: Saturday 18 OCTOBER 2014 All are invited to attend the walkabout of the school which will be led by the Headmistress. It will take place between the AGM and the Luncheon. Anyone interested must please meet in the foyer at 11:00.

This year, a luncheon will be hosted in the school hall at 12:30, after the sports events, AGM and guided tour of the school. Please save the date for now and details of costs, theme and entertainment will be communicated later in the year. Attendance is by booking only, so please contact your convenor for more information. OLD GIRLS’ SPORTS DAY: Saturday 18 OCTOBER 2014 The Old Girls’ Sports Day is always a lot of fun and filled with much laughter! It is impressive to see just how many Old Girls are able to keep up with the current PHSG girls.

It is also so heart-warming to see the large numbers of Old Girls who are always willing to volunteer their time and energy to participate in the morning’s sporting events – the sense of camaraderie PHSG instilled in us has evidently never left many of us.

Any Old Girls who would like to take part in the fun this year, please contact Shani Cloete at 082 372 7454. The rest, please come and join in the fun and support the Old Girls as we show the current girls that we’re still a force to be reckoned with!

CHURCH SERVICE: Sunday 19 OCTOBER 2014 Last year, we organised a church service to take place on the Sunday after the reunion. This took place in the school hall and it was a beautiful ending to a wonderful, fun-filled weekend. The church service will take place again this year at 10:30 in the school hall. All Old Girls are welcome to join us in celebrating our beloved school and the memories each of us have of the ‘good old days’!

This event is strictly for Old Girls celebrating their 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th and 50th+-year reunions.

PHSG – A NATIONAL SYMBOL OF EXCELLENCE

The High Tea held last year was great fun! The constant buzz in the school hall, along with the fresh flowers as decorations created such a warm, summery and cheery atmosphere. The delicious, fresh food and cakes all went to the hips, but boy was it worth it!

PHSG featured on the front cover of the National Treasury Budget 2014. This says a lot about the way our prestigious school is viewed and is a reflection on our reputation for excellence! –Ed 7

Letters to the Editor 60-YEAR REUNION – CLASS OF 1953 It was such a pity that only five of us could attend – Wynsome (Ressell) de Villiers, Margaret (Loughor-Clark) Ellis, Judy (Rutherford) Farrell and Sheila (Sandison) Marley, with Penny Mylrea and Rita-Ann Marquis who couldn’t stay for lunch.

Catherine Thompson was on an overseas visit, Barbara (Todd) Carey was contacted but wasn’t well enough to attend and Elaine (Clulee) Twyford lives in the Johannesburg area, but didn’t make contact. The really sad part of our reunion was that Christa (de Wet) Illsley was really looking forward to the reunion, but was too ill to attend and died on the 29th of October.

Penny McNair, the Headmistress, gave a wonderful talk before lunch and reassured us oldies that all was still well with our beloved school. Her extensive guided tour before we met in the hall was also very informative, and filled in all sorts of details (and surprises). OGA Chairlady Wilma Cloete, also gave us a good report of the Old Girls, and I want to say that Wilma is quite remarkable that she has given so much energy over so many years to the OGA, always with grace and enthusiasm.

The catering was really good and was so well arranged. We oldies were a bit thrown by the wraps, but forks were soon provided for us. We all also enjoyed the screened photographs.

All in all, it was a lovely day spent in wonderful company.

50-YEAR REUNION – CLASS OF 1963 Saturday 13th October 2013 saw many former pupils of Pretoria High School for Girls gathering at their old school for their respective reunions. Amongst these were sixteen Class of ’63 Matriculants. Having been out of school for fifty years it was not necessarily a case of instant recognition but certainly a growing awareness of how they had looked in the unifying ‘green dress’ years ago and the present mature ladies chatting around the lunch table.

1963 There was time spent pouring over the ‘63 Matric Group’ photo taken on the front steps of the school, trying to identify each face and the ensuing discussion of ‘then’ and ‘now’. We were entertained by the lovely voice of Cassie whose unassuming manner gave her an added warmth and appeal. The wonderful spread of savoury and sweet treats was enjoyed by all. All too soon the hours had sped by and it was time to take our leave of our Grand Old School but not before our very professional photographer, Joan Manders, had captured the occasion on camera with flattering results.

Thank you to all who attended our reunion, for the contacts made and for renewing and updating memories.

40-YEAR REUNION – CLASS OF 1973 For the 20 Old Girls who attended the Class of ‘73 reunion, it was extraordinary to walk into Girls’ High after all these years and to realise that the friendships we had made and good teachers we had, made the school so special and that what endures is the grounding and outstanding education we were lucky enough to experience.

Nostalgia was evident, some even shedding a few tears as familiar faces were reunited amidst hugs and shrieks of delight.

There was barely enough time to eat lunch as so much catching up had to be done. Stories were shared and old photos took us down memory lane. We have created a group on Facebook (PHSG Class of 1973) where comments and photos are shared.

A newsletter was sent out with snippets that Old Girls had sent in. Thank you to everyone who came, and to those who could not, we missed you.

the Old Girls’ Reunion – telling us how proud the Old Girls are of their school and how particular they can be about how it is looked after. And now we are these same old biddies, pointing out every detail. Quite ironic!

Penny and the OGA committee were wonderful hosts, with great snacks, lovely welcome speeches and happy visits with them. Thank you Penny, Wilma and the team – it was truly a very special occasion for us.

And, of course, it was marvellous to catch up with our lot again after all this time. We all look somewhat like weather-beaten versions of our green-dressed selves, but the laughs and the teasing and the chirps were just like 30 years ago.

It felt as though we had only started chatting when it was time to lock up the school building. So, not ready to leave, we went and sat in the formal gardens on the paving, just like we did during our school breaks. Miss Mullins said we behaved “just like cows lying on the asphalt to get warm in the winter”.

1973 All were so grateful to have had the chance to reconnect with Terry Annecke, Anne MacPherson, Ute Hoppman, Anne Colley, Gail Giddy, Louise Moller, Christine de Witt, Margaret Ringelman, Louise Harley, Jaji (Marlene) Drake, Bonnie Norton, Michele (Beguin) Edwards, Verl Burger, Linda Cook, Isabelle Jambe, Hilary (Abratt) Jocum, Cheryl Goffe, Dot Christodoulou, Sue Kuit and Helen Rowe. What an astounding group of women we are!

My mom, Margaret Roberts, and sister, Sandy – also Old Girls, couldn’t be with us, but sent along a chilled vat of Margaret Roberts Rose Petal Liqueur complete with a silver dispenser, lead crystal tot glasses and fresh rose petals in the boot of my car. Bootlegger us! Debbie Jooste untied the boating ties around the vat like the windsurfer old hand she is; Lyn Todd poured the liqueur into the dispenser without a wasted drop – very smooth.

So there we ‘cows’ sat in the middle of the night, and toasted the good old days, swearing that we will come back in numbers for our 40th reunion!

Hilary (Abratt) Jocum – 40-year reunion convenor (1973) 30-YEAR REUNION – CLASS OF 1983 FRIDAY SOCIAL EVENING About a dozen of us turned up to a very nicely arranged, small event in a quad. The school looked wonderful. It’s so precious for all of us to walk the passages again and see the projects that Penny McNair and her teams have taken on. All very in keeping with what Old Girls like us would approve of. We remembered how Miss Mullins would make us do a proper tidy up before 10

2003, 10 YEARS ON...

A lot can happen in a decade. A school reunion not only reunites one with one’s high school peers, but also with one’s teenageself and events from that era. Following much social media with reminders of names we perhaps hadn’t seen for 10 years, and the curiosity of the names of those who choose not to subscribe to the platform, we gathered on one heaven-blue, unclouded sunny day in October last year.

Some travelled from far, and even though others may not have had a lengthy trip, there was a journey of emotions that accompanied all upon the return to PHSG – no matter the distance travelled.

The Great Gatsby Social Evening on Friday, Old Girls’ Boarder sleepover at North Lodge, tour of the school grounds with Mrs McNair and other reunion groups, visit to School House and luncheon in the school hall afforded everyone an opportunity to reconnect, exchange happenings of their last 10 years and share anecdotes of our recalled and forgotten memories. We missed and remembered those who couldn’t be there and those who are no longer with us. Many thanks to the Old Girls’ Association, staff and girls for organising the events over the weekend. If the promised plans to ‘keep in touch and meet up’ fall through, we have a guaranteed date reserved for 2023.

MYSCHOOL SUPPORTERS FOR PHSG MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet is one of South Africa’s biggest fundraising programmes. The programme was established in 1999 by a Johannesburg parent who wanted to help his child’s school raise funds. In 2001, Woolworths bought shares in the company and is now the programme’s main partner.

Many supporters of this programme have their beneficiary as PHSG and every time they swipe their card a certain amount of money is donated to the school. This amount grows each year and the funds go towards various programmes such as maintenance of the school and assisting with payments of school fees for families who may be struggling.

We urge you to spread the word so that we can continue to support our prestigious school by providing funds for its various programmes. If you wish to become part of the MySchool programme, either contact the school or visit the MySchool website: www.myschool.co.za to obtain a card.

1968 INFORMAL REUNION GROUP

LUNCHEON OF WESTERN CAPE PHSGOGA

Thank you so much for allowing us to join the reunion last Saturday and making us feel so welcome. The tables were beautifully decorated and the food wonderful. The slideshow during the afternoon was wonderful, being able to see what a wide sphere of influence PHSG has through its learners both past and present. We had a great time catching up with each other again.

Thirty-three Old Girls – ranging in matric years from 1930 (yes!) to 2011 – gathered for lunch at Jonkershuis in Constantia on a damp and somewhat cloudy day.

Besides a healthy representation of loyal supporters, many new (and young) faces also graced the occasion. Hopefully they too will become ‘regulars’.

The mood, however, was anything but damp. Soon the room reverberated with the animated conversation of old friends and acquaintances as the ladies caught up with one another.

Mrs Penny McNair brought news of the school, and Ms Lavonne Wittmann told of the activities of the OGA. We thank Old Girl Tammy Botbyl (1987) and her staff at Jonkershuis for the delightful venue and for accommodating us.

Hopefully this will become an annual event of note. We also wish Penny and her husband a happy retirement and thank her (and him) for all they have done for and meant to the school.

My thanks again to Wilma and the whole OGA committee for the wonderful Reunion Weekend that you all planned. Your hard work is really appreciated. I am sure that a wonderful time was had by all. Karen-Marie was so pleased to be able to attend the games morning and Thanksgiving Church Service with me.

A lovely moment was to see that my fifteen year old niece was playing water-polo against Crawford – so the family links with the school are still strong.

Dorothy (Dreyer) Rapson and I really enjoyed the Friday evening function, as well as the luncheon. The girls from the Class of ’68 really had a good time at our little informal reunion and everyone said how great it was that our enthusiasm was rewarded by being allowed to have a table to celebrate forty-five years. Watch out for us at our 50-year reunion!

Of course, I really loved seeing everyone and to see the first matrics I taught in 1973 was quite amazing!

AN AMBASSADOR FOR PHSG IN MISS SA PAGEANT Matlala Mokoko (2008) was crowned Second Princess in the Miss South Africa Pageant 2014. Matlala Mokoko was well-known at PHSG – for her never-ending legs, big smile and bubbly personality! She has certainly made a name for herself in South Africa and she has been an incredible ambassador for PHSG. Matlala is very active in social media and enjoys huge South African support on both Facebook and Twitter. We cannot wait to see what new heights she will reach! – Ed

Chairlady’s Report 2014 Dear Old Girls 2013 has flown past and it has been a very busy year for our Association.

At our first meeting of the year, Kim Lovegrove was unanimously elected as Vice Chair to replace Anne (O’Brien) Barnard who resigned due to work commitments. We are really blessed to have such a capable lady as Kim on the committee. Kim decided to hand over the reins for Spring Fair to a new member, Londiwe Mahlangu, while Kim will focus on the Alumni co-operation and fundraising initiative.

Leigh Grindley-Ferris, another new member on the committee, took on the responsibility for the Facebook page and this has grown in leaps and bounds over the past year. Leigh is so enthusiastic and also so young that she perfectly understands the ins and outs of Facebook and Social Media networking that we older fogies battle with. It has been a pleasure working with her this year and the fact that she is on the staff at school has been an added bonus!

Sadly, Catherine (Irons) Bosman lost her husband in January and at the same time confirmed that HANDING OVER THE REINS: Newly elected she was expecting their first Vice Chair, Kim Lovegrove, takes a breather little one. She decided to take a from the Spring Fair to focus on Alumni break this year and to get herself co-operation and fundraising. settled. We look forward to welcoming her back to the Old Girls’ Committee as soon as she feels able to return. Catherine gave birth to a lovely baby daughter in August and took a break in Cape Town with her family until December. Our love and best wishes to her and her little girl.

Merryl (Ketjen) Pierce has also decided to resign as secretary and we want to thank Merryl for her hard work, especially with the reunions, over the last couple of years. Merryl, we will miss you very much. I knew I could call on you any time for assistance and you always took care of things with a smile.

PHSG appointed a young lady, Melanie, to assist in the IT department at the school. Melanie has very kindly been allowed to assist the Old Girls’ with updating our database. This is a huge, ongoing task and this year we really want to get as much information as we can onto the database so that we can communicate more successfully with the Old Girls.

Under Tina Panayi’s very careful management over the past 20 years we have solid financials and we can rest assured that our money is in good hands. Thank you Tina for all your hard work and for always travelling from Johannesburg to work on the committee, we are very grateful.

Claudia Anelich took over the Newsletter from Anne (O’Brien) Barnard two years ago and she has been a star. The newsletter is filled with news and interesting articles and is posted on the website for easy access. Claudia, thank you for an eagerly awaited newsletter, we look forward to the next instalment.

Londiwe Mahlangu worked with Kim this year on the Spring Fair and soon realized that it wasn’t an easy task. We received a number of compliments and although I missed it this year due to travels, I was assured that it was packed with the things the Old Girls love. The teddies remain a success and we will have to beg Pauline (Spruyt) Myers to do the Lemon Cordial again this year.

Several people came especially for that! We made a respectable profit and met up with many Old Girls who visited the stall.

Shani Cloete’s sports day between the Old Girls and the school after the AGM was also a huge success. The camaraderie and good fun that is shared by the young and the old girls is amazing.

We added waterpolo and tennis last year and a great time was had by all. Unfortunately, we struggled with the hockey team but we are determined to do better this year. The school took the overall cup. Well done PHSG – a fitting tribute to Mrs Penny McNair for her final year!

Lavonne (du Plessis) Wittmann managed the Reunion weekend in 2013 and after a shaky start it turned into a huge success!

Lavonne is absolutely amazing and has enough energy for at least two people. Although she was away in the USA on business until shortly before the weekend, she managed to arrange a 19

superb Gatsby Style weekend that was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. On the Friday evening we had a group of boarders who slept over in the hostel to recapture their school experience – needless to say a group of Old Girls who were celebrating their 30th reunion woke them at three in the morning and a huge party ensued in the formal gardens with copious amounts of Margaret Roberts’ rose wine being consumed! The AGM and the walk-about the school were very successful, as usual, and the High Tea on Saturday was great fun with good food and great company and a wonderful musical item by a very talented Old Girl, Cassandra (Cassie) de Beer. On Sunday morning, we had a church service in the Hall led by Father Tim Lowes, who considers himself an ‘Old Girl’. This was so special that we plan to do it again this year, so all Old Girls will receive an invitation!

At the Badge Ceremony in August where we welcomed the matric ladies of 2013 to the Old Girls Association, Kate Barry, also an Old Girl and producer at Carte Blanche, spoke and shared some of her experiences with the girls. Girls’ High can be proud of the girls who have passed through the school.

I had the pleasure of attending the Valedictory Service in the Aula. As I sat and listened to the multi-faceted achievements of our young ladies, I realised again that we are truly one of the best schools in Gauteng and even in South Africa. It isn’t surprising that we were named in the top three in Gauteng this year. Well done to Mrs McNair and her excellent team.

Bronwyn Grover has started a young ladies networking group for the Old Girls and a picnic in the formal garden was held last year.

This group is growing and an event is planned for sometime this year and will be advertised on Facebook and the website. We look forward to welcoming back many past pupils to the school.

We have been very fortunate to have Rosemary (Henderson) Spruyt on the committee for a number of years. Rose works in the background making sure everything is in place and running smoothly. No reunion or event for the Old Girls’ could take place without Rose. She sees that tables, chairs, tea, coffee, etc. are all where they should be and that the logistics are taken care of. Rose, you are very special and we really appreciate all your hard work.

Our branches, both national and international, function very well. We receive news and whenever possible we attend teas or lunches. This year Tina joined the Johannesburg Branch and had a lovely day with Val (Hearn) Taylor and her group. Lavonne travelled to Cape Town and thoroughly enjoyed a lunch with Denise (Mostert) (Cadle) Fourie. Penny McNair also travels to as many events as she can fit into her busy schedule and we are so privileged to have her with us.

In May this year, Lee den Hond, an Old Girl, was the third SA woman to summit Mount Everest. What an achievement! Lee addressed the young ladies at PHSG during the Iris Birthday Assembly and shared her amazing story with us. It is a gruelling two month task with very severe conditions (winds, temperatures of -37 °C, very little oxygen and carrying your backpack with everything in it) to summit Everest and to stand on the top of 20

The long-awaited Astro Hockey Field has been completed and was opened on 28 February. This field has been named The McNair Field and a better name could not have been chosen!

Penny has worked tirelessly to achieve this dream for our girls and we are very proud of the new field. Well done PHSG and thank you to all the Old Girls who contributed to help build this Astro!

On a sad note, both Pauline (Spruyt) Myers and Barbara (Shepperson) Dorlas, long-serving mem­bers of the OGA Com­ mittee, lost their husbands to illness early this year. Our heartfelt condolences go to both the ladies and their families.

Mrs Penny McNair is retiring in July this year and Karen du Toit will take over the reins for six months until the new Head is appointed. We know that Karen is very capable and we look forward to working with her. We would like to wish Penny and Jock all the best for their retirement and we hope they have many, very happy years in the Natal Midlands. We hope to see Penny at the reunions and we would like to thank her for working so well with the Committee over the past years. We will miss you dearly, Penny!

CHARITY DRIVES ALL-YEAR ROUND

PHSG girls collected just under 1 500 tomato & onion mix tins for the Wings of Love Charity. The charity was started

by Hennie and Beth de Beer, parents of Old Girl Tamsyn de Beer, after her tragic death in 2011.

The annual jersey display during April/May is another charity drive initiative by the school’s Contact Club to assist the needy during the cold winter months.

The Contact Club also coordinates a stationery drive where any kind of stationery is collected and distributed to disadvantaged school children.

The girls who are part of the Contact Club have set up a vegetable garden at Lethabo le Khutso – a home for adults with autism. The girls also visit various homes on a regular basis, particularly an orphanage in Silverton, where they help the children with homework and play with the younger children.

Dear Old Girls The years seem to pass by faster every year and I find it hard to believe that already the first quarter of 2014 has been and gone too. While much of a regular nature still happens on a daily basis in a school of this nature and size, I remain amazed at how each year we somehow manage to fit something new and exciting in as well. The parents at this school are vital stakeholders without whom we cannot function. Most importantly we need them to support their daughters in their journeys through high school and assist us in guiding them and upholding the codes of conduct of the school. Very significant too, though, is the role parents play in assisting with fundraising for the school, either directly or indirectly. No school can manage without additional funds for special projects these days.

At PHSG, we really try not to tap parents’ pockets too often and so we have the Spring Fair as our only major fundraising event each year. The boarders have a Boarder Parents’ Dinner and a Golf Day. Additional funds are gathered by your participation in the Makro and MySchool projects. Parents are, therefore, very special in the Girls’ High Community!

During 2013 construction was limited and focus was on the Astro. While this has been an enormous task, I am happy to say that we officially opened the Astro on Friday 28 February in the evening and a fine facility it will be! Some surrounding areas are still to be completed, but these are independent of the Astro itself. Thanks must go to Mr Graeme Wilson, Mr Graeme Fenwick and Mr James Tubb for giving unselfishly of their time and expertise to head up this project. What I would have done without them, I do not know. Many others have also been involved in various ways and I am grateful to all who in any way have assisted and contributed to this project. It is a 23

phenomenal achievement and an incredible asset for PHSG. What was most special on the occasion of the Opening of the Astro was the fact that two Old Girls, Pauline (Spruyt) Myers and Margaret Descroizilles, were the first to hit a hockey ball on the new surface and so started what we trust will be many years of happy and successful playing on the artificial surface!

As always we had fine grade 12 results in 2013 and even in other grades very few learners were retained. I applaud all the staff at this school as they always go the extra mile to ensure all girls achieve their goals. Several grade 12 girls were the top candidates in District Tshwane South, in various subjects. We also had the 5th placed learner in Tshwane South. Participation in various Olympiads is always important, as well as entering various competitions, be it in Art or writing Poetry and our girls always feature successfully. Developing a well-rounded young lady is our goal!

Since last year the governors and executive of the school have made a concerted effort to “up the game” in certain sports and cultural areas. We have the Sport Director, Maryke Marais, who has her finger on the pulse and I am confident that with time this school will be a force to be reckoned with. The PHSG A Team were placed 3rd in the Pretoria League Inter-High swimming gala in February. A fine result!

The Orchestra Programme is in its 3rd year of implementation and here too we are seeing growth and development of fine youthful talent. Much time and effort is being put into our girls by the music department and the orchestra has grown to a size we desire. Focus is particularly on the development of the brass instruments and the identification of young ladies to play these instruments.

We continue to market this school through the huge efforts of Joan Manders; Felicia Ntisa; Karen Du Toit, my Deputy, and the Marketing Committee and so remain a school of choice for many and a flagship school in South Africa.

This will be my last Newsletter to you, the Old Girls, after more than 12 years as Head of this fine school. While I leave with great sadness and know that I will miss all who are part of PHSG, I am also excited at the prospect of doing those things I have not been able to do over the years. The school is in a “good place” with a full complement of management staff, two fine deputies and excellent governors and administrative and support staff. I have no doubt that this school will continue to 24

go from strength to strength and remain a top school in the country. My thanks to all who have supported the Governors, PA and myself over the many years.

To you as Old Girls, a special “Thank You”, for welcoming me into your fold and for endlessly supporting the many ideas and activities of this school. You are a vital cog in the system and your input on so many matters is invaluable. Please continue to present your thoughts and enjoy all that your Alma Mater has for you. You are indeed all special. To Wilma Cloete and the Committee, my grateful thanks for the hours and often months you quietly give in the background in the interest of PHSG. Without your input and guidance, the school would not be the same. Thank you! All is much appreciated and I trust that this loyalty will long continue.

In closing, I must thank my husband Jock for the amazing support and guidance he has given me over the many years, particularly the more than 22 years whilst I was part of the management of this school. Living on the school property is an incredible privilege, but it does come with challenges! Without his unconditional support and help, together with that of my two sons Grant and Craig, I would never have been able to achieve my goals or manage this fine school. Thank you for allowing me this incredible opportunity and journey through education and development of the young girls.

OGA PICNIC IN THE FORMAL GARDENS – COME RAIN OR SHINE The formal gardens was the perfect setting for the Old Girls’ picnic. Despite rain and chilly conditions, there were some Old Girls and their families who braved the weather and arrived with picnic baskets and wine. The sun made a brief appearance and we mingled on the lush lawns where the roses were in full bloom. It was a wonderful opportunity to reminisce about the good old days. NEW ASTRO – MCNAIR FIELD What a proud moment for Mrs McNair this must have been! After months of fundraising and avid anticipation to see the completed project, the moment finally arrived on Friday 28 February 2014. The astro has been named after the immensely influential Penny McNair, who will be sorely missed by all at the school and OGA after her retirement.

A familiar face, Mrs Pauline (Spruyt) Myers attended the opening ceremony and match between PHSG’s first team and Eunice. Sadly, PHSG lost 4-0 but I am sure that once the PHSG hockey teams have found their feet on the new Astro, we will be seeing many victories!

Renée Hlozek (2001) has been featured in the Rhodes Project, which focuses on female Rhodes scholars. Renée is currently a Lyman Spitzer Jr. Fellow of Theoretical Astrophysics at Princeton University, and the Spitzer-Cotsen Fellow in the Princeton Society of Fellows in the Humanties. She is also a 2013 TED fellow, and was named one of 200 Young South Africans for 2012 by the Mail & Guardian. She holds a DPhil in Astrophysics from the University of Oxford, MSc and BSc (Hons) degrees in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cape Town, and a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of Pretoria.

OLD GIRL ON THE FAST TRACK TO SUCCESS

The Rhodes Project is a scholarship that more than 1 100 women have taken up since it was founded in 2004. Its mission is to advance public understanding on the subject of female achievement and gender equality, and to raise awareness of gender issues, and, to promote research for the public benefit in all aspects of these subjects, and to publish their results.

Olympian hockey player and Old Girl, Dirkie Chamberlain, went to her 150th cap for SA Hockey in January this year. In May she scored the winning goal from the penalty spot with just three minutes left in the Champions Challenge in Glasgow and South Africa beat Spain 1–0 to take the bronze.

Goodbye to beloved Old Girl, Megan (Homfray) Woolcott (1939)

before finally settling in Cape Town with her three children and husband, ‘Chappie’. He went into business, launching SABat which grew into a well-known brand in South Africa. Megan and Chappie were married for almost 60 years and Megan was always very supportive and was a tower of strength throughout their happy marriage.

We say goodbye to Megan Olga Diana (Homfray) Woolcott (1939) who passed away on Wednesday 28 August 2013.

As with her marriage, Megan was a dedicated and supportive mother, always at her children’s side when they needed her. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren and always spoke with much affection about them.

Her dear friend, Old Girl Maureen Taylor (1939) sent us a moving tribute honouring her friend of many years.

An important factor in Megan’s life was the NCW – The National Council of Women. She served on the executive committee for many years and was appointed to the National Board where she worked closely with Benni Munro, doyen of the NCW representing South Africa on the International Council of Women. Megan was passionate about women’s rights, counselling prostitutes in areas such as Hillbrow.

Maureen and Megan met at PHSG in the late thirties. Maureen remembers Megan as a dedicated and popular prefect.

In May this year, Old Girl Lee den Hond became the third SA woman to summit Mount Everest. Lee addressed the young ladies at PHSG during the Iris Birthday Assembly and shared her amazing success with us enthralling the young ladies. Lee joins the ranks of Cathy O’Dowd (first in 1996) and Mandy Ramsden (second in 2010).

Megan took the role of Mrs Bennet in a school production of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. Her performance was so well received that she made the newspapers. Reporters stated that she played her role as the hysterical match-making mother so superbly that the role of Mrs Bennet ‘could not have been better portrayed than by Megan Homfray’.

Maureen writes that Megan was approached by Gwen Francois Davies – the famous Shakespearean actress – to pursue a career in acting after school. Megan’s father, however, disuaded her.

Megan also had a splendid singing voice and sang frequently at concerts and weddings.

She married a pilot and moved around South Africa, living in Pretoria, Bloemfontein and the Western Cape, where she farmed, 28

1973 Sue (Weyers) Hartzenberg is married with two sons, Timothy and Matthew, both of whom attended PBHS – the fourth generation!

She and her husband live in Franschhoek and run their business from home.

1974 Linda (van Rooyen) Hutchison Hatting got married in 2010 to her lovely husband, Robert Hatting. She has two wonderful stepchildren, Candice (31) and Jarrod (28) as well as three wonderful children of her own, James (29), Caitlin (27) and Megan (21) and a few surrogate children as well. Linda says that she will always be grateful for having PHSG as her moral compass and foundation with “Ma Nelson” for one year and then dear “Miss Mullins” for the other four years. Their wisdom and compassion – even when Linda often turned up for tea and detention because she commuted from Hartebeespoort dam daily and was often late for school – was amazing!

1978 Shelley (Kirk) de Klerk is married with two daughters. She re­ cently moved from Perth to the south west of WA to open a new restaurant called “Little Fish”. Her sisters, Jacqui (Kirk) Chapman (1979) lives with her husband and two children in Liverpool, UK; and Ingrid (Kirk) Spelman (1981) lives in Dunsborough, South West Australia with her husband and two children.

News from the Hermanus Branch 1966/1967 Linda (Bronkhorst) Griffiths retired to Hermanus from Constantia, Cape Town, in 2002. She is involved in numerous environmental and civic matters, namely the Ward committee, Bird Club, University of the Third Age, Vice Chair of the Botanical Society, member of the Whale Coast Conservation Society, and a member of the Fernkloof Advisory Board. Linda was also the Chairperson of the Hermanus Rate Payers Association for six years but she now supports the HRA with environmental matters of which there are many. She also says there are many Old Girls in Hermanus and they are to be found in leadership positions in many of the societies, clubs and different associations – Dr Pat Miller, Jenny Nicolson, Avis McIntyre, Dr Michelle Lawrence, to name a few.

Linda has three sons – an environmental conservationist, a chartered account, and a teacher – all bachelors still, so no grandchildren yet. Linda would love to meet up with Old Girls who visit Hermanus. She does keep up with many of the 1966 Matrics and those who became teachers as she did, and tries to attend the Old Girls’ reunions in Cape Town when she can.

Linda’s sister, Celia (Bronkhorst) Roux (1967), lives in Auckland, New Zealand, where one of her daughters Philippa, is a teacher.

Celia has three grandchildren, two girls and a boy. Celia’s other daughter, Nicola, is a doctor in Somerset West, Cape Town. David, her son lives and works in Cape Town. Celia is the administrator of a medical clinic in Auckland, and loves her work there.

1938

Michelle Reyers received her PhD from the University of Pretoria on Thursday 10 April 2014. After obtaining a BCom in Law cum laude in 1997, a BComHons in Financial Management cum laude in 1998 and a MCom in Financial Management Sciences cum laude in 2009, she has now completed her PhD titled: The rationality of retirement preservation decisions: towards a scientific model.

Sybil (Hewitt) Fraser is now recovering after six weeks in hospital having broken three toes after a fall in the kitchen.

She has started taking a little exercise at last. She is expecting a visit from her American grandchild in April – after a tour in Italy – who will be staying for two days in the UK, with the usual boyfriend, of course.

1952 Moray (Reyburn) Saunderson sends news from Crawley in Sussex that she has been nicely settled in the new house for almost a year now. The routine continues much as usual: volunteering with the National Trust, teaching and playing music, as well as outings and lunches. She mentions that she had good days out in Canterbury, Cambridge and London to go up the Shard (very exciting) and Ramsgate walking round the harbour in warm sunshine for a change. Moray had a short holiday in the Midlands area last spring (new territory to her), a few days in France at the family home in Normandy last summer, and this year there are plans to see National Trust properties in the Norfolk area and in Devon in the autumn. Moray marvels at the rapid development of her two little grandsons, five and three, who are an endless source of fun and joy.

Moray has had occasional visits from and outings with Marianne (Green) Purdie and is in touch with Wendy Jones in Spain and Pat Lewin in Corfu and hopes to meet up with Hazel (Brown) Lugg soon.

1954 Hazel (Brown) Lugg says it has been a fairly quiet year as health hiccups hampered her plans to move house but she expects to get there in the end! Hazel’s daughters are still keeping an eye on her. Two are in Africa, one working in Uganda and the other working in Nigeria. With the grandsons nearing the end of their schooling years, Hazel often thinks of her happy school days at PHSG and the wonderful friends she made and how fortunate they all were. Hazel met up with Jill and Dulcie and was so lucky to bump into Moray (Reyburn) Saunderson (1952) in London last year – a real blessing!

1957 Anne (Scholtz) Grey writes from Oxshott in Surrey and says that in January/February 2013 they travelled to South Africa to see their friends Jean (Lowe) de Swardt and husband Bill and explored Sun City with them, which was magical. They then spent nearly two weeks in and around Cape Town visiting Anne’s sister, Gill Scott, and friends Pat (Nightingale) Rademeyer and Carreen (Hamman) de Villiers in Plettenberg Bay. Anne and her husband have a busy life looking after their large garden and their four grandchildren who all live pretty close to them, luckily. Anne plays tennis, does Pilates and they play a bit of Bridge, go to theatre, concerts and exhibitions (but then 32

London is close and it’s all so easy) and love to see their friends for lunch and dinner. They also travel as often as they can and in 2013 also visited Palestine, the Ukraine, South Wales and Brazil. This year they’ve been to Holland and will go to Greece shortly and then Eastern Canada in August.

1973 Michele (Beguin) Edwards was so fortunate to have two holidays to South Africa in 2013, the first in March for her parents’ 60th wedding anniversary and the next one in October for her 40th reunion at PHSG. It was so much fun and wonderful to meet up with girls from 40 years ago and see how beautifully maintained the school is. It made Michele feel extremely proud to have been at one of the most beautiful schools in the country. Whilst in Pretoria, Michele also went to Pretoria Boys’ High with her husband, Robin, to attend his 40th reunion – what a great celebratory weekend it was, and they even met up with boys who were at Hatfield Primary School with her! Michele’s sister, Marianne (Beguin) Scholtz (1972) gave Robin and Michele a treat of a few days in the Cape. It was wonderful being in Fish Hoek and seeing all the new exciting food places and shops.

She says they have had a long and terribly wet winter in the UK and the devastation has been immense. Fortunately, although there was lots of flooding near them, they were safe and dry.

They are now managing to get out and about at the weekends in beautiful England to see the superb display of spring flowers and blooms all around us. They will be visiting the Greek island of Thassos in June to celebrate Robin’s 60th birthday and will then go to Lauzun in France in August for a niece’s wedding, whilst their eldest son, Pierre, is planning his wedding to his fianceé, Rheanna, in May 2015 in Birmingham. Michele’s youngest son, Grant, is working for Waitrose and just enjoyed a 14% bonus share of the profits!

Isabelle Jambe writes from Tongre-Notre-Dame in Belgium that she was so happy to attend her 40th year reunion and be hosted by her wonderful friend, Jaji Drake (1973). They thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the school but found Pretoria had changed quite a bit. Isabelle and Jaji then drove to Tzaneen to spend the night at Jaji’s brother and said it was an amazing sight seeing him feed the dozens of baboons just off his property. They then made a lifelong dream of Isabelle’s come true by visiting the Kruger National Park where they spent three nights at Letaba and Mopani camps which were stunning as the weather was not too hot and the vegetation was very bare and dry. They saw 33

so many animals, birds and reptiles and Isabelle shot over 2 000 photos! They finally left the KNP and made their way into Mozambique to Jaji’s home town of Quissico. Isabelle says that the week spent with Jaji at Quissico was a cultural shock, but nonetheless very interesting, and living a basic way of life with neat huts amongst palm and coconut trees created a very serene atmosphere. Jaji was an excellent hostess and just what Isabelle needed to destress from work and her father’s passing.

Isabelle has also been in contact with Michele (Beguin) Edwards (1973) and Reine (Jackson) Marais (1973) and stayed with Reine in Fish Hoek twice. Isabelle had to have surgery on her left knee in March and says that having time at home has been wonderful, being able to enjoy the sprouting vegetation and birds nesting in trees as spring approaches in Belgium.

1977 Sarah Prisgrove is the owner of the “No. 1 South African Shop” in Christchurch (which incidentally sells the best biltong ever!).

Sarah writes that business is booming and she has employed her sister-in-law Abigail (1975) to run the shop giving Sarah some much needed free time, although she is not complaining!
