COMING IN OCTOBER

MACBETH

Autumn is just around the corner, with all its mellow fruitfulness. Embrace the new season here at Phoenix, with our programme of wonderful world cinema, sumptuous Stage on Screen shows, and arresting art. With Leicester a host city for the Rugby World Cup, we’re screening Building Jerusalem with a Q&A live via satellite with Jonny Wilkinson, Clive Woodward and Martin Johnson (p4)… surely a must-see for rugby fans. Other film highlights include quirky high school tale Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, the heart-stopping Everest, and Meryl Streep’s latest, Ricki and the Flash. We’re also part of this year’s Scalarama festival (p11), a nationwide celebration of cult cinema, so expect a weird and wacky film treat or two. We’ve added new Stage on Screen dates (p12) due to huge demand, so if you missed Othello back in August, you’ve got another chance to catch it this month. And if you’re hoping to see Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet in October, you might want to book now as it’s sure to sell out. Whose Gaze is it Anyway? (p13) continues in our Cube Gallery as part of the Institute of Contemporary Arts touring programme; our one-day course The Personal is Political (p13) runs alongside the exhibition to explore representations of the Middle East in film. With the autumn term starting now, we’ve got a range of new learning opportunities for adults (p12), including British Cinema in the 1960s and Halloween Screams: An Introduction to Horror Cinema, so unleash your inner film buff and sign up.

45 YEARS

Tue 1 - Thu 10 Sep Dir: Andrew Haigh Cast: Charlotte Rampling, Tom Courtenay UK 2015, 1hr 35mins Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay play elderly couple Kate and Geoff in Andrew Haigh’s spellbinding new drama. During preparations for their 45th wedding anniversary a letter arrives concerning an old flame of Geoff’s, and the seemingly happy couple find their relationship rocked to the core as questions of lives unlived and what might have been emerge between them. A masterclass in acting and direction, Rampling and Courtenay are mesmeric while Haigh directs with elegance and subtlety.

ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL 12A

Fri 4 - Thu 10 Sep Dir: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon Cast: Thomas Mann, Olivia Cooke USA 2015, 1hr 45mins

Greg and his friend Earl are two American high school kids who spend most of their time creating daft parodies of classic movies for their own enjoyment, perfect for Greg as he plans to get through school without drawing any attention to himself. All that changes when Greg’s mum insists he spend time with Rachel, a girl from his class recently diagnosed with cancer. At first awkward and embarrassed, the two connect

through his and Earl’s movies and Greg decides to make Rachel her own film. Quirky, funny and a cinephile’s dream for film references - it’s powerful stuff that fills your heart with a love for cinema and optimism.

Filmed in sumptuous black and white, L’Eclisse followed L’Avventura and La Notte in Antonioni’s trilogy on contemporary malaise and arrives in a new digital restoration.

THE WOLFPACK

15

Tue 1 - Thu 3 Sep Dir: Crystal Moselle USA 2015, 1hr 30mins

This jaw-dropping new documentary looks at the incredible true story of the Angulo brothers, confined to their tiny family home in Manhattan’s Lower East Side since birth.

POLITICAL CINEMA SEASON BUILDING JERUSALEM + SATELLITE Q&A 12A

THIS IS NOT A FILM

This screening will be followed by a Q&A live via satellite from London with Jonny Wilkinson, Clive Woodward and Martin Johnson. The film charts the dawn of modern rugby with Sir Clive Woodward at the helm. It is an astonishing story of pressure, expectation and courage, tracing the roots of success back to the professionalisation of the game in the ‘90s, culminating in that glorious World Cup campaign of 2003.

The film will be introduced by James Harvey-Davitt and followed by a post-screening discussion. In 2010 award winning director Jafar Panahi was convicted of propaganda against the Islamic Republic and sentenced to six years in prison. Under house arrest awaiting the results of an appeal, Panahi made a film depicting a day in his life, shot partially on an iPhone and smuggled out of the country in a cake.

THE HISTORY OF CINEMA-GOING IN LEICESTER TBC

Fri 4 - Thu 10 Sep Dir: Matthew Heineman Cast: Jose Manuel Mireles Mexico 2015, 1hr 40mins, subtitled

Sun 6 Sep, 3.20pm Dir: Phil Grabsky UK 2015, 1hr 32 mins

“There’s an imaginary line out there, between right and wrong, good and evil”. Heineman’s searing documentary looks at two vigilantes fighting Mexican drug cartels on either side of the US border. Driven by a lack of government support a small-town doctor leads an uprising, whilst in Arizona a paramilitary group is led by veteran Tim “Nailer” Foley. It’s courageous filmmaking with a sense of urgency and desperation that few documentaries achieve.

Screening in partnership with Leicester International Music Festival. Filmed over the course of four years, renowned documentary filmmaker Phil Grabsky followed leading concert pianist Leif Ove Andsnes’s attempt to understand and interpret one of the greatest sets of works for piano ever written: Beethoven’s five piano concertos. Considered one of the top pianists of the age, Andsnes’s exquisite and exclusive classical performances are given centre stage.

Join us on a journey through our city’s cinema-going past. From the Electric Theatre to the modern multiplexes, many grand picture palaces and cramped fleapits have opened and closed since the early 1900s. This new documentary features interviews with local audiences and a wealth of material from the county’s archives, and will be accompanied by a talk from the DMU research team behind it.

IN SEARCH OF BEETHOVEN TBC

Fri 11 - Thu 17 Sep Dir: Mohsen Makhmalbaf Cast: Mikheil Gomiashvili France / Georgia 2014, 1hr 59mins, subtitled When a President orders the lights to be turned off in his city to impress his beloved grandson, it becomes the catalyst for a full-scale uprising. Soon on the run for their lives the two pose as poor travellers, and the President must confront the shocking hardships that his despotic regime has wreaked on his country. Recalling King Lear and Benigni's Life Is Beautiful, it’s a satiric parable with bite and immediacy.

Fri 11 - Thu 17 Sep Dir: F. Gary Gray Cast: Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins USA 2015, 2hrs 27mins

Brimming with angry energy, Straight Outta Compton chronicles the rise of rap group N.W.A and follows Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and MC Ren as they navigate the emerging West Coast hip-hop scene of the 1980s. From tough beginnings, to their breakthrough success, Straight Outta Compton is a raucous portrait of the genre’s most influential and groundbreaking figures.

Thu 17 Sep, 8pm Dir: Régis Roinsard Cast: Romain Duris France 2012, 1hr 51mins, subtitled

The new film from director Liv Ullman is a smouldering account of seduction, based on the 1888 Swedish play by August Strindberg. Over the course of a midsummer evening in County Fermanagh, the daughter of a baron encourages her father’s valet to seduce her, but the man is not as simple as she supposes. As power shifts between them and they become both predator and prey, a fascinating psychological drama unfolds.

Screening in partnership with the Leicester French Circle. This sweet and immaculately-styled film from France is a delight. Déborah François plays hopeless insurance secretary Rose. Unable to complete the simplest tasks – her saving grace is an uncanny ability to type very quickly. Recognising her talent, her suave boss Louis takes her on the road to typing competitions, and as her fame escalates Louis begins to fall for her.

12A

Fri 18 Sep - Thu 1 Oct Dir: Baltasar Kormákur Cast: Jason Clarke, Emily Watson UK/USA 2015, 2hrs 1min Based on a real-life tragic incident in 1996, Everest follows a group of climbers as they attempt to scale Earth’s highest mountain but disaster strikes when a huge storm rolls across the peaks. With the group forced to try and survive nature at its wildest,

Everest is edge of your seat, heart-in-mouth stuff. Alongside the incredible effects and scenery, Icelandic director Kormákur (Jar City, 101 Reykjavík) has assembled a top notch cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clark and Keira Knightley, who give the story believability and emotional power.

Anne Fontaine’s (Coco Before Chanel) new film charts the arrival of British couple Gemma and Charlie Bovery into a small French town. Village baker and literature buff Martin notices that the couple share similarities with Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, even the marital strife. Taking Gemma under his wing, is Martin trying to help or does he want to see a live version of Flaubert’s classic novel acted out in front of his eyes?

RICKI AND THE FLASH

HARD TO BE A GOD

12A

Fri 25 Sep - Thu 1 Oct Dir: Jonathan Demme Cast: Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline USA 2015, 1hr 42mins Performing in bars and scraping a living as a cashier, ageing rock star Ricki (Streep) is drawn back to the family she left to pursue a music career when she hears her daughter’s marriage has broken down. Arriving to hostility from her children, estranged husband and his new wife, Ricki becomes determined to fix their relationships. Streep is, as always, brilliant in the central role - balancing Ricki’s delicate mixture of melancholy and rebellion

WE HAVE A POPE

PG

Sun 20 Sep, 3pm Dir: Nanni Moretti Cast: Michel Piccoli Italy 2011, 1hr 42mins, subtitled Screening in partnership with The Leicester Italian Society. After the Pope passes away, the Conclave meets to decide on his successor, but is the man they pick up to the job? Featuring a brilliant performance from Michel Piccoli and some genuinely hilarious moments – witness the Pope’s new therapist trying to organise a volleyball tournament between Nuns and Cardinals – this is a heart-warming film about faith, courage and humanity.

THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL

18

Mon 21 - Thu 24 Sep Dir: Marielle Heller Cast: Bel Powley, Alexander Skarsgård, Kristen Wiig USA 2015, 1hr 42mins ‘ ’ - You watch it thinking, this is probably going to be a lot of people’s favourite movie’ Little White Lies. This honest and deliciously funny debut film from Marielle Heller is based on Phoebe Gloeckner’s graphic novel and stars Bel Powley as Minnie, a teen artist living in 1970’s San Francisco who decides to have an affair with her mother’s jock boyfriend Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård).

Fifteen years in the making, the final film from Russian auteur Aleksei German is a piece of overwhelming art cinema. Scientists from Earth travel to the almost identical planet of Arkanar where the renaissance never occurred. Instructed only to observe, they find themselves drawn into the mud and blood of Dark Ages culture. Almost indefinable, Hard to be a God is a concoction of Tarkovsky’s Stalker, Dante’s Inferno and Goya’s Disasters of War.

LEGEND

TBC

Fri 25 Sep - Thu 1 Oct Dir: Brian Helgeland Cast: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning UK 2015, TBC Tom Hardy is on brilliant form in the dual role of twins Ronnie and Reggie Kray, the East End gangsters who ruled London in the ‘60s. Starting with protection rackets but escalating to armed robbery and murder, Reggie tries to pursue a relationship with a local girl despite the increasingly psychotic tendencies of Ronnie threatening their empire. Superb support includes Christopher Ecclestone as a detective determined to bring the Krays to justice.

ART WHOSE GAZE IS IT ANYWAY? Thu 27 Aug – Thu 24 Sep Cube Gallery, Free The exhibition looks at the history of Arab pop culture through printed materials, film and video. Its inspiration began with the archive of Abboudi Bou Jaoudeh – a prolific collector whose underground treasure trove in Beirut holds a vast collection of Arab film memorabilia, from rare film posters to cultural magazines published from the 1930s to the present day. Film posters from the archive will be displayed in the Cube Gallery, alongside a newly commissioned work by Qatari-American artist Sophia Al-Maria, who presents an imaginary poster and sketchbook for her unmade film, Beretta, which she has been attempting to produce over the past three years.

WORKSHOP: CRITICAL POSTER DESIGN

Saturday 19 Sep, 2pm-5pm, Free Ages 16+ Based on the collection of film posters from the Whose Gaze is it Anyway? display, work with artist Jo Dacombe to create your own posters using hand-printed techniques.

FILM: WEST BEIRUT + PANEL DISCUSSION 15

Sat 19 Sep, Time TBC Dir: Ziad Doueiri Lebanon 1998, 1hr 45mins, subtitled Set in Lebanon during the Civil War of 1975, West Beirut is the story of two young boys, Tarek and Omar. At first the war is an opportunity for adventure, which the boys document on their Super 8 camera. But soon, tensions arise. Based on the director’s boyhood memories, the film underscores the terrors children suffer during wartime. Followed by Whose Gaze is It Anyway, on Syria, a panel discussion with two Syrian filmmakers.

FILM: SALVATION ARMY 18

Sun 27 Sep, Time TBC Dir: Abdellah Taia Morocco 2013, 1hr 21mins, subtitled The rapturous debut feature from Moroccan writer Abdellah Taia offers a charged, semi-autobiographical tale about a young graduate who must navigate the sexual, racial and political intrigue surrounding his arrival in Geneva. Inspired by his autobiographical novel of the same title, Taia’s coming-of-age story folds and unfolds with love, pain, desire and violence.

These exhibitions form part of ICA Touring, in partnership with the Arab British Centre

THE 18TH

BRITISH SILENT FILM FESTIVAL

Phoenix plays host to the 18th British Silent Film Festival this September, with an exciting programme of rediscoveries, rarely-seen British silent (and not-sosilent) films and highlights from international festivals. This annual festival focuses mainly on British film before 1930, but draws on archive collections from all over the world to bring you fantastic silent films produced in other countries.

14 – 15

This year’s themes are iconic events from 1915 and heroes and villains, from swashbuckling adventurers and early astronauts, to footballing champions and the quiet heroes of the World War One. The programme also takes a look at British silent cinema in transition with some of the last of the silent and first sound films produced. To add to the experience, the films will be accompanied by the world’s leading silent film musicians, including Stephen Horne and Laura Rossi.

For further information and full details of the 4-day programme of events, talks and screenings, visit the British Silent Film festival website at www.britishsilentfilmfestival.com.

THE GUNS OF LOOS

PG

Set against the backdrop of the Battle of Loos on the Western Front, two soldiers are tested on the battlefield and in their rivalry for Diana, a Red Cross nurse (Carroll in her first film role). Issues of class and personal bravery are sensitively explored, and an extraordinary action sequence shatters the myth that British silent film was static and stagey. Accompanied by the world premiere of Stephen Horne’s stirring new score.

HITCHCOCK LOST AND FOUND: THREE LIVE GHOSTS

JANE SHORE

Sat 12 Sep, 8.30pm at Leicester Cathedral Dir: Bert Haldane, F. Martin Thornton Cast: Blanch Forysthe, Roy Travers UK 1915, 1hr 20 mins

Thu 10 Sep, 8.30pm Dir: Sinclair Hill Cast: Henry Victor, Madeleine Carroll UK 1928, 1hr 24mins

A cast of thousands is used to great effect in this version of the much-told story of Jane Shore, a goldsmith’s wife who becomes mistress to Edward IV and then falls foul of the future Richard III. Newly transferred with its original tints from a nitrate print, this is a rare chance to see this early classic from the BFI National Archive in the fitting surroundings of Leicester’s medieval cathedral. Presented with a new score by Laura Rossi.

ARSENAL U

Fri 11 Sep, 6pm Dir: George Fitzmaurice Cast: Norman Kerry, Edmund Golding UK 1922, 1hr

Recently rediscovered at Gosfilmofond in Russia, this comedy is one of the thoughtto-be lost films on which a young Hitchcock worked during his tenure at the Famous Players Lasky’s London studio. Adapted from a popular Broadway play, the film concerns three veterans who return from WWI only to discover that they have been officially listed as dead. Introduced by Hitchcock scholar Charles Barr.

PG

Sun 13 Sep, 6.30pm Dir: Alexander Dovzhenko Cast: Semyon Svashenko, Amvrosi Buchma USSR 1929, 1hr 32mins Set during the 1918 Russian Civil War in the bleak aftermath of WWI; Timosh, a demobbed soldier, survives a devastating train crash on his return from the War to find that Ukrainian freedom is being prematurely celebrated. He becomes increasingly disenfranchised with the governance of the munitions factory in which he works and calls for the adoption of the new Soviet Collectivism. Accompanied by the British premiere of a new music score by Guy Bartell of Bronnt Industry Kapital.
