TALE OF TALES

WELCOME After a somewhat squally spring, ‘flaming’ June has arrived, and we begin to (optimistically) anticipate a glorious summer ahead. You never know, it could happen! The Stage on Screen summer season (p11) gets into full swing this month, with opera from Glyndebourne; classic Shakespeare from the RSC; plus our exciting new Discover Arts shows.

Our new exhibition, Framed Expanse, explores the fascinating relationship between digital technologies and printmaking, considering how the physical landscape is reconstructed by digital imagery. Join us for the exhibition launch on Tue 21 Jun (p15). If you’re looking for new ways to make the most of those long summer evenings, we’ve got some great courses on offer (p14). You can book online now at phoenix.org.uk. This month’s film programme brings you a heady mix of laughter, intrigue, exploration, and steam trains! Go back to the ‘70s with Russell Crowe in crime-comedy The Nice Guys (p4); the everpopular Railways Remembered archive returns with Big Screen Steam (p5); and we journey down the Amazon into the dark heart of Colombia’s colonial past in the stunning multi award-winning Embrace of the Serpent (p6). There’ll be some changes to our prices from 1 Jun and as part of these changes we’re raising the age at which young people can get cheaper tickets, from 18 to 25. To find out more about how we set our pricing, read our CEO’s blog at phoenix.org.uk/ticket-pricing.

BACK TO THE EIGHTIES

MORE ACTING FOR FILM

Remember The Breakfast Club, Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Labyrinth? The 1980s saw a new era of family movies, teenage angst and spectacle-laden blockbusters. Join us as we take a look back at the films that defined one of the most popular decades in cinema.

A practical, exercise-based intermediate level course, delving deeper into the art and execution of film acting. We’ll cover a wide range of topics including professional development, auditioning, and on-set best practice.

Sat 20 Aug 10.30am – 4pm Price: £15

BOOK TO FILM

Fridays, 9 Sep – 14 Oct (6 sessions) 2pm – 3.30pm Price: £72 / £60 conc. The world of literature provides filmmakers with rich source material, but is it actually possible to please the book lovers and the film audience who are new to the story? We’ll examine the ways that classics, pulp fiction, dystopian futures – and some supposedly unfilmable books – have made it onto the big screen.

Wednesdays, 5 Oct – 9 Nov (6 sessions) 7pm – 8.30pm Price: £72 / £60 conc.

HOLLYWOOD AND POLITICS Sat 15 October 10.30am – 4pm Price: £15

Since ‘Mr Smith’ went to Washington back in 1939, Hollywood has been in thrall to the excitement of the political process and the power of the President. As the 2016 race to the White House heats up, we’ll take a look how life and art have frequently mirrored each other in the theatre of US politics.

ART AT PHOENIX

LUCI ELDRIDGE & MEG RAHAIM: FRAMED EXPANSE Fri 10 Jun – Sun 31 Jul Cube Gallery, Free

Framed Expanse is an exhibition of new work exploring the relationship between digital technologies and printmaking, commissioned to coincide with Leicester Print Workshop’s Small Print International. An ongoing fascination with how landscape is represented by digital technologies is what drives the individual practices of Luci Eldridge and Meg Rahaim. Whether rural or urban, peopled or desolate, landscape is now often encountered on-screen through the eyes of drones, web cameras and robotic explorers. However, these views remain partial and immaterial, manipulated, flattened and framed by technologies we do not fully comprehend.

FRAMED EXPANSE EXHIBITION LAUNCH & ARTIST’S TALK Tue 21 Jun, 6.30pm Free

Join us for drinks to celebrate the launch of the exhibition, including a talk from Luci Eldridge about making new work for Framed Expanse, her research trip to NASA and printmaking at our neighbours, Leicester Print Workshop. Booking not required.

Be it a pixelated flourish of cloud algorithmically rendered in the sky above Google Street View or the distant landscape of the planet Mars imaged by NASA’s rovers, landscape as a 360-degree physical experience is reconstructed via these devices, withdrawn into a flat two-dimensional image. Using printmaking, analogue photography, etching, collage and textile the digital is overturned in favour of the handmade as a means to reposition oneself within the distant and remote landscapes we encounter through the digital screen.

EXHIBITION WALK & TALK Sat 25 Jun, 10am – 3pm £15

Starting at Attenborough Arts Centre to view Small Print International, this guided tour continues to Framed Expanse here at Phoenix before heading to Leicester Print Workshop to take in the work of Small Print selectors Wuon-Jean Ho and Angela Hardin. Book through leicesterprintworkshop.com

COMING NEXT MONTH Look out for family workshops inspired by Framed Expanse – details in our July brochure.
