Fri 4 - Thu 24 Mar Dir: Joel & Ethan Coen Cast: Josh Brolin, George Clooney UK/USA 2016, 1hr 46mins Loosely based on the life of ‘40s movie studio ‘fixer’ Eddie Mannix (Brolin), this new film from the Coen Brothers (Inside Llewyn Davis) is a nostalgic journey into the bygone world of classic Hollywood. When star Baird Whitlock (Clooney) is kidnapped during the filming of a biblical epic, it’s up to Eddie and an assortment of stars and filmmakers to get him back. The superb cast includes Channing Tatum (doing his best Gene Kelly), a hilarious Ralph Fiennes as pompous director

Laurence Laurentz and Tilda Swinton as a fiery gossip columnist. A laugh-out-loud romp that’s one of the most entertaining films in years.

MERU

15

TRIPLE 9

15

Fri 11 - Thu 17 Mar Dir: John Hillcoat Cast: Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor USA 2016, 1hr 56mins John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless) returns with this rip-roaring thriller starring Casey Affleck (Ain't Them Bodies Saints), Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Blackmailed by the Russian mob, a group of corrupt cops plan to murder a fellow officer (a code ‘999’) in order to pull off a huge heist in the ensuing chaos. But a group of elite police are closing in on the gang and are determined to bring them down at any cost.

ORTHODOX

18

Tue 8 - Thu 10 Mar Dir: Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi Cast: Conrad Anker, Grace Chin India/USA 2015, 1hr 30mins

Tue 8 - Thu 10 Mar Dir: David Leon Cast: Stephen Graham, Michael Smiley UK 2015, 1hr 38mins

After Sherpa in January, Meru is another superb documentary about mountain climbing but this time from the point of view of the climbers. Following three elite alpinists as they attempt the ‘Shark Fin’ of Mount Meru − one of the most coveted prizes in the highstakes world of climbing − the film seeks to find out what drives these men to such lengths. A thought provoking, stunningly shot film about conquering peaks and inner demons.

Stephen Graham (This is England), Michael Smiley (Kill List) and Christopher Fairbank (Dickensian) star in David Leon’s debut feature about a Jewish boxer. Taking up the sport for self-defence, Benjamin alienates himself from his religious community and soon turns to crime. After a spell in prison he is determined to turn his life around, but gets drawn back into his old ways. As Benjamin, Graham gives a characteristically brilliant performance.

THE HERE AFTER

15

Sat 19 - Tue 22 Mar Dir: Severin Fiala Cast: Susanne Wuest Austria 2014, TBC, subtitled

Sat 19 - Tue 22 Mar Dir: Stephen Bradley Cast: Deirdre O'Kane, Brendan Coyle UK/Vietnam 2014, 1hr 39mins

Mon 21 - Thu 24 Mar Dir: Magnus von Horn Cast: Ulrik Munther Sweden/Poland 2015, 1hr 42mins, subtitled

In a country house, twins Lukas and Elias eagerly await the return of their TV star mother from facial surgery. But the woman who returns wrapped in bandages isn’t very motherly, and the brothers suspect she is not who she claims to be. As they begin to test her, things spiral rapidly and viciously out of control. A genuinely disturbing film, this slice of Austrian arthouse horror ratchets up the tension and violence at every turn.

Vietnam 1989, 14 years after the end of the war. Tough Irishwoman Christina arrives in Ho Chi Minh City with a mission in mind: she is going to care for the city’s orphaned children. Through flashbacks we see what pushed Christina to this calling, including her own nightmarish childhood and abuse in the slums of Dublin. Based on the true life story of Christina Noble, a proud and defiant woman who refused to let her spirit be broken.

Released from a correctional facility where he was interred for murder, teenager John is thrust into a community that has neither forgotten nor forgiven his crime. Facing barely contained rage from his fellow classmates and the quiet revulsion of his father, John is alone until he sparks a relationship with the school rebel Malin. Reminiscent of Mommy and 2011’s Breathing, von Horn’s heartrending film forces us to consider the limits of our own compassion.

NEERJA

15

Mon 21 - Thu 24 Mar Dir: Ram Madhvani Cast: Shabana Azmi, Sonam Kapoor India 2016, 2hrs, subtitled In 1986, PanAm Flight 73 was hijacked while on the ground at Jinnah International Airport, Pakistan. With the flight crew escaped, the leader of the terrorists was forced into a confrontation with the authorities, threatening the lives of all on board. In the midst of the standoff, flight attendant Neerja risked everything to protect her passengers. A true story of one woman’s incredible courage, Neerja is a tense, moving and humbling experience.

TRUTH

15

Fri 25 - Thu 31 Mar Dir: James Vanderbilt Cast: Cate Blanchett Australia/USA, 2hrs 5mins It’s 2004 and American CBS news show 60 Minutes runs a damning story on President (and re-election candidate) George W. Bush's patchy military service in the 1970s. After the accuracy of their source is questioned, producer Mary Mapes (Blanchett) and anchor Dan Rather (Robert Redford) face a firestorm of criticism. Did they let personal politics cloud their judgement? Interrogating the privileges of power and freedom of the press, this timely film has reliably great performances from the two leads.

DISORDER

15

Fri 25 - Thu 31 Mar Dir: Alice Winocour Cast: Matthias Schoenaerts France/Belgium 2015, 1hr 38mins, subtitled (parts) A slick and exciting action thriller, nominated for a handful of awards on the festival circuit. Vincent is an ex-soldier suffering from PTSD who takes a security job protecting a businessman’s wife and child. Despite the seemingly easy nature of the detail he becomes paranoid that a threat is incoming. Schoenaerts is compelling, returning to the vulnerable brute role that brought him to the world’s attention in Bullhead and Rust and Bone.

JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE 15 Fri 25 - Mon 28 Mar Dir: Amy J. Berg Cast: Janis Joplin, Cat Power USA 2015, 1hr 44mins A heartfelt documentary about the legendary Janis Joplin, narrated by American musician Cat Power. Once heard never forgotten, Janis Joplin remains one of the most beloved and respected singers of all time, who blazed a trail for women in rock and roll. Comprised of archive footage of her electric performances, interviews with friends and based on Janis’ own letters to her parents, it’s a moving but ultimately celebratory film about an incredible talent.

THE WITCH

TBC

Fri 25 - Thu 31 Mar Dir: Robert Eggers Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson Canada/USA 2015, TBC A Puritan family are cast out of their community in 17th century New England. Determined to survive on their own, the stubborn father moves his wife and children to a cabin on the edge of a huge forest. But something evil stalks the wood, and when their infant son disappears the family tears itself apart. Rather than relying on cheap shocks, The Witch curls around you with creeping dread then tightens its coils. Stunning.

RATTLE THE CAGE

TBC

Mon 28 - Thu 31 Mar Dir: Majid Al Ansari Cast: Omar Abdulhamid UAE/Jordan 2015, TBC, subtitled

Screening in partnership with Friends of the Earth and Global Justice Leicester, the film will be followed by a panel discussion. What if confronting the climate crisis is the best chance we’ll ever get to build a better world? Inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fiction bestseller and filmed across four years in nine countries, This Changes Everything is an epic attempt to reimagine the vast challenge of climate change.

Engrossing from start to finish, Rattle the Cage is the first film of its kind produced in the UAE – a terrifically enjoyable, darkly comic neo-noir throwback to thrillers like The Hitcher. Waking up with a foggy memory in a police cell, Talal’s situation goes from bad to worse when a ‘policeman’ arrives and cold-bloodedly kills the only guard on duty. Now trapped in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with a madman, Talal must play along whilst also trying to escape.

In 2010, white supremacist Craig Cobb moved to Leith (population 16), and tried to take it over. By organising armed patrols and purchasing 12 plots of land for his Neo-Nazi followers, Cobb intended to manufacture an electoral majority, much to the horror of the townspeople. When the devil is legally your neighbour, how can you kick him out of town?
