This funding means we’ll be able to keep developing our art and digital culture programme over the next three years – bringing more exhibitions from artists across the world to Leicester, taking art out into the city and providing support for the local arts community.

In the Cube gallery this month we’ll be showcasing cutting edge work from our partners at De Montfort University before setting up for our next exhibition Sites of Collective Memory. In the cafebar we’ll be running free drop-in workshops for children every Friday to help introduce them to the amazing world of creative technology (p13).

Dir. Richard Linklater Cast: Ethan Hawke, Ellar Coltrane USA 2014, 2hrs 46mins Filmed across a 12 year period with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s (Before Midnight) new film is a oneof-a-kind masterpiece, the type that comes along every so often to remind you why you love cinema. Following young Mason

(Ellar Coltrane) from the age of 5–18, we see him grow up literally before our eyes – through snapshots of birthdays, family holidays, first days at school and graduations. A nostalgic hymn to the recent past, childhood and

“I tried to split them up thinking he was attacking her and the woman punches me in the mouth – turns out it was Janis Joplin”. Mike Myers’ hugely entertaining biopic is about celebrity manager Shep Gordon – a showbiz survivor few have heard of; but everyone will know his incredible roster of clients including Alice Cooper, Sylvester Stallone and Michael Douglas (who shares some wonderfully catty anecdotes!)

The Fault in Our Stars 12A

Like Irish director Carney’s 2006 film Once, his new movie is a sweet and uplifting film about the redemptive power of music. When disgraced former record label exec Dan (a gorgeouslyscruffy Mark Ruffalo) spots young singer songwriter Gretta (Knightley) performing in an East

Village bar, her innocent songs and raw talent convince him to record an album with her using the streets of New York as a studio. Touching performances from the two leads and great support from Catherine Keener and James Corden.

(La jaula de oro)

A new feel-good comedy about following your heart (and palate) that will leave you very hungry! Favreau stars as Carl; fed up with cooking his boss’s pretentious menu at a fancy eatery, things come to a head when a local critic savages his food in a review. Deciding to quit and pursue his dream of running a Cuban sandwich truck, Carl calls in a few favours and is soon off on the road, aided by his son and loyal colleague Martin. A hymn to family, determination and the simple pleasures of food.

Dir. Diego Quemada-Díez Cast: Brandon López, Rodolfo Domínguez Guatemala/Spain/Mexico 2013 1hr 48mins, subtitled

Taking America by storm this summer, this adaptation of John Green's best-selling novel stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel and Gus, two teenagers who meet at a cancer support group. Immediately falling for each other, the reality of their conditions threatens their young love. Successfully adapted by the screenwriters of 500 Days of Summer and elevated through the young stars' winning performances, the film will strike a chord beyond young audiences.

First-time director QuemadaDíez tackles the theme of illegal immigration from a young perspective as four teenagers embark on a challenging train journey from Guatemala to the U.S. border. Contrasting the beautiful scenery with the hardships of corrupt cops and traffickers the friends face, the youths are confronted by the harsh reality that the promise of the US ‘Golden Dream’ holds. This hard-hitting film pulls no punches and has won multiple awards worldwide.

Drawing comparisons to last year’s Mud, redemption and violence clash in this gritty drama when 15-year-old Gary approaches ex-con Joe (Cage) for work on his lumber crew. The boy, hoping for a better life yet regularly beaten by his alcoholic dad Wade, triggers a fatherly instinct in Joe that he never knew he had. A stunning return to form for Cage after years making brainless medium-budget movies, he’s matched by rising star Sheridan. Joe is a film with guts and heart.

Director Zlotowski's second feature is a dark and gripping love story, set within the tight-knit community of workers at a nuclear power plant in the heart of the French countryside. Newcomer Gary (Rahim, A Prophet) lands a job as a decontamination sub contractor, but soon falls into a passionate affair with Karole (Seydoux), a co-worker's fiancée. With it only a matter of time until someone uncovers their relationship, how long can Gary trust his workmates to watch his back in the dangerous environment of the plant?

Friedrich soon falls for Hoffmeister’s younger wife Lotte, but the pair’s mutual attraction is threatened by their loyalty to their benefactor and the impending war.

Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Bright Star) plays Richard – a young Londoner crippled with grief over the death of his boyfriend Kai. Kai’s only relative in the UK is his mother Junn (Pei-pei Cheng, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) who is unable to speak English and ensconced in a drab retirement home. Hoping the two can find some solace

in memories of a man they both loved, Richard hires his friend as a translator, but Junn was unaware or refuses to acknowledge Kai and Richard’s relationship. A film for anyone who has ever loved, and perhaps lost, Hong Kahu’s debut feature is tremendously moving and made with intelligence and

care. Moments of comic relief come from Peter Bowles as Alan – an elderly Romeo making bumbling attempts to seduce Junn.

In this magical micro-budget film, a Spanish civil war fighter falls from the sky into a present day village in Spain. After befriending the town’s teacher and an overenthusiastic priest (who assumes he must be an angel or a saint), the mysterious soldier sets out to find a way to return to 1937 and his fiancée. Bursting with more wit and charm than a hundred blockbuster movies – but with none of their marketing budget – this is a hidden gem for fans of world cinema.

From the endlessly inventive mind of Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) comes a surreal adaptation of Boris Vian's cult novel. Colin (Duris), a fabulously wealthy bachelor, falls in love with the enigmatic Chloé (Tautou). But the lovers' idyllic new life (and Paris itself) begins to crumble when Chloé becomes sick from a lily growing in her lungs, and the only cure is to surround her constantly with fresh flowers. Whimsical and heartbreaking.

75-year-old eccentric Drako Zarhazar, a former dancer, biker, drug dealer to The Rolling Stones, model/muse for Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Derek Jarman, and ‘elder statesman on the 1980s London fetish club scene’ is unable to create memories after suffering brain damage. Forced to live in the present, Drako discusses his incredible life from inside his Brighton flat. How much is fact and how much is fiction? Get swept along for the ride with this fascinating man.

Kubrick’s masterful anti-war drama shows men caught up in, and ground to pieces by, the machinations of the war machine. Desperate for a scapegoat after a disastrous attempt to seize the heavily fortified ‘Ant Hill’, the French generals close ranks and court martial three infantrymen for cowardice. A lawyer in civilian life, the soldiers’ commanding officer Colonel Dax (Douglas) defends his men personally, but is confronted by the petty one-upmanship of the top brass.

After 2011’s surprise hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the franchise steps up a gear to deliver the most intelligent and enthralling blockbuster of the summer. Set 10 years after the end of Rise of..., a virus has wiped out most of mankind, and the apes have created their own forest utopia. When a small group of human survivors makes contact looking for help, it kick-starts a chain of events that can only lead to war. Shakespearean in scope with incredible action sequences.

he takes off in pursuit only to find Rey (Pattinson), the injured and naïve little brother of one of the thieves, who has been left behind. Bound by a shared desire to settle scores with the escaped gang members, the two men set off

The Year and the Vineyard 15
