El año 2011
pasó como un relámpago con muchas iniciativas y adelantos. Ballena Tales celebró su 3° cumpleaños y en Bahía se realizó nuevamente el Festival de Ballenas y Delfines. Se creó una Cámara de Turismo y Comercio de Costa Ballena (CACOBA), integrada por seis empresarios costarricenses y tres extranjeros. Una de sus primeras actividades será el 2° Festival de Costa Ballena – el 10 y 11 de diciembre en Bahía – Uvita. Este evento lucirá la oferta turística de la zona y contará con un sinfín de actividades para niños y adultos. Ballena Tales anuncia el inicio de una nueva era, estamos uniendo esfuerzos con MyDestination, un gigante global de viajes, que permitirá acceso a información actualizada sobre la zona y provee soluciones de mercadeo personalizadas a los anunciantes así como el contacto directo con los interesados en su producto. A parte de tantas actividades hemos podido constatar un cambio en la conciencia de los empresarios. El Pacifico Sur es una zona verde, y cada vez más hoteles y establecimientos han logrado obtener la Certificación de Turismo Sostenible. Muy en nosotros mismos, nos damos cuenta de nuestro poder de construir el mundo del cual todos soñamos. No tenemos mucho tiempo para hacerlo. Nuestro planeta está amenazado por múltiples crisis. Estas crisis podrían separarnos como nunca o unirnos como jamás lo pensaríamos posible. Los resultados de nuestros esfuerzos determinarán si nuestros hijos vivirán en un mundo oscuro o en uno de una humanidad armoniosa y vibrante. El titulo de nuestra presente edición es “Sueños”, ¡así que comiencen a realizar su visión de un mundo mejor! ¡Una feliz Navidad y los mejores deseos para todos en el año 2012! n

flashed by very quickly with many initiatives and advances. Ballena Tales celebrated its 3rd birthday and Bahía again held the Whales and Dolphins Festival. A Chamber of Tourism and Commerce of Costa Ballena (CACOBA) was created, integrated by six Costa Rican businessmen and three foreigners. One of the first activities will be the 2nd Festival of Costa Ballena - December 10th and 11th in Bahia - Uvita. This event will showcase the tourism offerings of the area and will have a range of activities for children and adults. Ballena Tales announces the start of a new era. We are joining forces with MyDestination, a global travel giant that allows access to current information about the area and provides customized marketing solutions to its advertisers and direct contact with customers interested in your product. Beyond the many activities, we have seen a change in the awareness of local entrepreneurs. The South Pacific is a green area, and more and more hotels and establishments have achieved the Certification of Sustainable Tourism. Deep within ourselves, we are realizing our own power to build the world we all dream of. We don’t have a lot of time to do it. Our planet is threatened by multiple crises. These crises could split us apart like never before, or bring us together like never before. The outcome of our efforts will determine whether our children face a darker world or one thriving in greater human harmony. The title of the current edition is “Dreams”, so begin to create the world as you dream it! La magia del surf de Dominical Surfear en Dominical es una experiencia mágica. Dominical es un pueblo pequeño y relajado de surfeo en la costa del Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica. Esta íntima comunidad de 700 habitantes, compuesta por ávidos surfistas y una cantidad creciente de comerciantes que les atiende, fue una vez nada más que una fila de chozas de pescadores en la desembocadura del río Barú. Pero en los años ´80, un grupo de surfistas aventureros descubrieron que el surf en Dominical era un raro placer y la noticia se propagó.
H
oy en día, la franja de 4 km de playa atrae a surfistas de todo el mundo en busca de un surf inusual. En Dominical, donde la selva encuentra el mar, las olas son huecas, rápidas y potentes. Rompen hacia la derecha y la izquierda. Los bancos de arena que se forman en la desembocadura del río Barú crean esta condición poca común, levantando olas de casi 2 m para el deleite de los surfistas. Más afuera, se pueden encontrar sitios donde la ola siempre quiebra. El fondo de la playa es de arena con algunas rocas cerca de la desembocadura del río. El mejor surf se produce a mediados de la marea baja. Los surfistas deben tener cuidado de corrientes y resacas. Después de surfear, la ciudad cobra vida. Dominical es el hogar de una serie de clubes y pequeños bares de playa. Estos lugares al aire libre bajo las palmeras son el lugar perfecto para aquellos que buscan una cerveza fría y un poco de música relajada subrayada por el golpeteo de las olas. Desde que se concluyera la carretera en el año 2001, se llega fácilmente desde Jacó y otras playas pobladas al norte. Mientras Dominical puede seguir siendo la joya en la corona del surf en el Pacífico Sur, hay un montón de otras playas de surf a lo largo de la costa, desde Dominical hasta la Península de Osa. Dentro de unos minutos en carro se encuentran las playas Hermosa y Uvita. Los que buscan una experiencia idílica de surfeo disfrutarán de Dominical. Pregunte a cualquier persona que ha estado allí y se lo va a confirmar. Surfear en Dominical es mágico. n
The Magic of Surfing Dominical Surfing in Dominical is a magical experience. Dominical is a laid back little surf town on the South Pacific coast of Costa Rica. This intimate community of 700 residents made up of avid surfers and the burgeoning entrepreneurs who cater to them was once nothing more than a collection of fishing shacks at the mouth of the Baru River. Then around 1980, a group of adventuresome surfers discovered that surfing Dominical was a rare pleasure and word got out.

oday the 4 km (2.5 mile) stretch of beach attracts surfers from around the world who seek its unusual surf breaks. In Dominical, where the rain forest meets the ocean, the waves are hollow, fast and powerful. They break both right and left. The sand bars that form at the mouth of Rio Baru create this uncharacteristic condition, throwing up 6 ft. swells that delight surfers. Further out, good point breaks can be found. The beach bottom in Dominical is sandy with a few rocks near the river mouth. The best surfing occurs at mid-tide going low. Surfers should be wary of riptides and the undertow. After surfing, the town comes to life. Dominical is home to a number of small beachfront bars and clubs. These open air venues beneath the palm trees are the perfect place for those seeking a cold bottle of beer and some laidback music underscored by the pounding of the surf. The recently completed highway allows a straight shot down from Jaco and other crowded surf beaches further north. The good news is that while Dominical may remain the jewel in the crown of surfing on the South Pacific coast, there are plenty of other great surf beaches all the way down the coast from Dominical to the Osa Peninsula. Within a few minutes’ drive, you´ll find the Playa Hermosa and Uvita beaches. Those in search of an idyllic surfing experience will love Dominical. Ask anyone who has been there and they will confirm it. Surfing in Dominical is magical. n

Teléfonos inteligentes = Seguridad Inteligente ¿Quiere usar una funda en el cinturón con un arma? Mejor coloque un teléfono inteligente en la funda.» ¿Quiere que se lo tire al chico malo», se preguntará usted. No, no se lo tire, pero piense en esto:

a comunicación comunitaria es un factor fundamental de la seguridad comunitaria. Si observa cualquier comportamiento sospechoso en nuestro barrio, un mensaje de texto de alerta puede salir simultáneamente a todos los vecinos. Y, si el ICE quiere, en cuestión de segundos todos lo saben. Lo antes posible coloque el número de su vecino en el marcado automático. En una situación de emergencia se puede marcar en la oscuridad. Un teléfono inteligente tiene que ser programado antes que lo pueda usar. Tenga en cuenta, que la clave #1 es típicamente reservada para recuperar los mensajes de voz, y la tecla #9 para el 911 o cualquier otro número de emergencia. “Ve algo, diga algo” es un eslogan popular en los Estados Unidos. Aquí en Lagunas decimos, “ve algo, tómele una foto (o un vídeo).” ¡Una imagen vale más que mil palabras, créalo! Todos los teléfonos inteligentes tie-
nen cámara. Una foto de los chicos malos, su carro, la matrícula o de los malos con las manos en la masa vale mucho más que los “hechos recordados.” Cuatro malhechores están en la cárcel porque fueron “capturados en un video”, cuando robaron a turistas en Dominical. Usted puede activar la función de grabación de voz de su teléfono y confirmar sus observaciones. La ubicación del teléfono puede ser vista en un mapa desde otro teléfono inteligente. ¿Práctico, verdad? El teléfono inteligente ha reemplazado muchas cosas que solía llevar en mi mochila: la libreta de direcciones, el radio, la linterna, la calculadora, el traductor o el GPS. Por unos pocos dólares más, uno puede sentirse un poco más seguro y ayudar a atrapar a los maleantes. Si se trae un teléfono de los Estados, recuerde que tiene que «desbloquearlo» para que trabaje con el sistema del ICE. ¡Así que, enfúndalo! n
Crazy Smart Phones = Smart Security Want to wear a holster on your belt with a weapon? Put a smart phone in that holster. “Do you want me to throw it at the bad guy”, you might be thinking.

o, don’t throw it, but think about this: community communications is a core factor of community security. If any suspicious behavior is observed in our neighborhood, one text message goes out simultaneously to all of the neighbors warning them to “be on the lookout.” Boom, ICE willing, within seconds the entire neighborhood knows to be alert. Have your nearest neighbor on the phone ASAP on an autodial number; that way it can be done in the dark in an emergency situation. A smart phone needs to be set up ahead of time in order to do these things. Keep in mind, the #1 key is typically reserved for automatically retrieving Voice Messages, and the #9 key is reserved for 911 or any other “emergency” number. “See something, say something” is a popular tag line in the States. Here in Lagunas we say, “see something, take a picture (or video) of it.” A

picture is worth a thousand words. Believe it. All smart phones have cameras. One picture of the bad guys, their car, the license plate, or of the bad guys in the midst of being bad is worth a lot more than “remembered facts.” Case in point: 4 bad guys are in jail because of being “captured on video” showing them stealing from tourist in Dominical. You can also turn on the voice recording function of your phone and add your observations. The phone can be “located” on a map that can be seen on another smart phone. Talk about coming in handy, huh? My smart phone has replaced lots of things I typically carried in my back pack: address book, radio, flashlight, calculator, translator, GPS, to name a few. For a few dollars more, one can feel a little bit more secure, and help catch the bad guys. If you bring one down from the States, remember it needs to be “Unlocked” in order to work on the ICE system. So, holster up. n

Es hora de iniciar un cambio en el océano
U
n cambio en el océano puede devolver la salud al mar. “Aquí, en Ocean Conservancy, creemos que es hora de mirar debajo de la superficie para ver donde la salud de nuestro planeta realmente comienza. Es hora de reconocer que el océano es la fuente que nos sostiene día a día con los alimentos que comemos, el agua que bebemos y el aire que respiramos... para darnos cuenta que todos los seres vivos están conectados con el océano. Es tiempo de entender que empezar a ser ecológico tiene que comenzar curando el océano. Es hora de iniciar un cambio en el mar.” Un equipo de diez “ticos” y tres “gringos” unieron fuerzas para limpiar Playa Hermosa (entre Dominical
y Uvita) y después clasificar la basura. A continuación reportaron sus hallazgos a Ocean Conservancy quienes están llevando a cabo limpiezas de playas a nivel mundial. Los voluntarios estuvieron escandalizados por la cantidad de basura que encontraron: zapatos, cepillos de dientes, jeringas, envases de plásticos y, lo peor, pequeños pedazos de plástico que los peces confunden con comida. Estos después estarán en nuestra comida. It’s Time to Start a Sea Change
A
sea change can return the ocean to health. “Here at Ocean Conservancy, we believe it’s time to look beneath the surface to see where the health of our planet really begins. It’s time to recognize the source that sustains us day to day with the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe...to discover that all living things are connected to the ocean. It’s time to understand that going green starts with living blue. It’s time to start a sea change.” A team of ten “ticos” and three “gringos” joined efforts to clean up Playa Hermosa (between Dominical and Uvita) and then sort the
trash. Afterwards they reported their findings to the Ocean Conservancy who are conducting beach cleanups worldwide. The volunteers were shocked by the trash they found: shoes, toothbrushes, syringes, plastic containers and, what is worse, small bits of plastic that fish mistake for food, and then end up in our food. The initiative was taken by Hotel Cuna del Angel´s young employees Giovanna and Jonathan and runs parallel with efforts to make Playa Hermosa safer and cleaner. n

How to Choose the Right Surf Board
or lo general, hay dos tipos de tablas de surf: tablas largas y tablas cortas. Tablas largas son mejores para principiantes. La superficie más amplia y larga hace que la tabla sea más estable. Las tablas largas también tienden a ser más gruesas que las tablas cortas, proporcionando una mayor flotabilidad, facilitando a los principiantes remar hacia una ola. Tablas largas son por lo general 60 cm más largas que la altura del surfista. La mayoría de las tablas largas tienen una cola con una punta de contorno suave, que permite un mayor control en el agua. enerally, surfboards are of two types: long boards and short boards. Long boards are better for beginners. The longer wider surface makes the board more stable. Long boards also tend to be thicker than short boards, providing greater floatability and making it easier for beginners to paddle into a wave. Long boards are usually about 2 feet longer than the height of the rider. Most long boards have pin tails (a tail contoured to a soft point) which allows for greater control in the water. Beginners usually prefer control over maneuverability. They like to cruise down the surface of a wave rather than cut back and sweep. The single fin on long boards allows for more stable cruising. More experienced surfers often choose short boards. Short boards require skill to balance and maneuver, but they allow for sharp cut backs and crisp release off the tops of waves. Short boards may have a variety of different tail contours. Rounded tails provide a loose, turnable board. Squash tails (where the tail is squared off) make for greater speed but less launch. n

Reserva Biológica Playa Hermosa
H
ace 10 años subió un grupo de universitarios por un trillo al pueblo de Playa Hermosa. Estuvieron equipados con sus tiendas de campaña y en busqueda de un sitio donde pasar la noche. Llegaron a la propiedad de la familia Retana donde les ofrecieron hospedaje y también una comida caliente. A doña Ligia le dio vergüenza cobrarles ya que nunca lo había hecho. Pero los muchachos insistieron y se quedaron, abrumados por la lindisima vista desde el rancho y la exuberante vegetación en los alrededores. Les acompañó el biólogo don Gino Villamonte, quien les guió en su exploración del bosque primario. Y los estudiantes siguieron veniendo, dando talleres ambientales a los vecinos. Fue entonces cuando cesó la cacería, la talla y la quema en los alrededores del pueblo, práctica muy utilizada para preparar los terrenos para la siembra o el ganado. Hoy dia hay un gran proyecto por parte de la Asociacíon de Desarollo de Playa Hermosa: el de crear una Reserva Biológica incorporando todo el pueblo. La familia Retano con su rústico Rancho Remo es la precursora, ofreciendo hospedaje en sencillas cabinas y un restaurante especializado en mariscos, pescado, y parrilladas. Traiga su licor y disfrute de una puesta de sol que nunca se le olvidará. n
Playa Hermosa Biological Reserve
T
en years ago, a group of college students climbed up to the village of Playa Hermosa. They were equipped with their tents and in search of a place to spend the night. They reached the property of the Retana family, where they were offered accommodation and a hot meal. Doña Ligia was ashamed to charge them money because she had never done this before. But the students insisted and stayed, being overwhelmed by the beautiful views and the lush vegetation surrounding the property. They were accompanied by Gino Villamonte, a biologist, who led them in their exploration of the primary forest. And the students kept on coming, giving environmental workshops to neighbors. It was then that the people stopped hunting, cutting trees and burning the land around the village of Playa Hermosa, practices used to prepare the land for planting or livestock. Today the Development Association of Playa Hermosa has a great project to create a Biological Reserve incorporating the whole village. The Retana family with their rustic Rancho Remo is the precursor, offering simple accommodations in cabins and a restaurant specializing in seafood, fish and BBQ. La historia de Tom S. Daly
E
l autor de nuestra portada es el fotógrafo Thomas Scott Daly. En California era operador de ductos de petróleo y cuando regresó después de dos años de Vietnam, donde trabajó como paramédico de combate, tuvo la oportunidad de estudiar fotografía en el San Francisco City College. Tom era un chico muy deportista, jugaba al tenis, esquió, y amaba las motos rápidas y las mujeres bellas. En su velero de 32 pies navegó por la Bahía de San Francisco e incluso a la isla de Bethel, donde eligió vivir durante 12 años. Los buenos viejos tiempos: a veces tenía 5 trabajos a la vez y se enamoró de la isla con más bares a lo largo del muelle que habitantes, más aún a través del lente de su Canon. Sus fotos causaron furor donde estuviera. Después de más de 20 años trabajando con compañías petroleras, se fue de los Estados Unidos para vivir en Costa Rica. Su destino lo llevó directamente a Uvita, donde vive ahora con sus dos perros, al lado del río Cortezal. Él está feliz de haber escapado de la vida americana. Le encanta la aventura, la amabilidad de la gente, la belleza de la naturaleza y la vida silvestre, los cuales son una interminable fuente de inspiración para su arte. Su fotografía es misteriosa y llega a las profundidades del alma. n
The Tom S. Daly Story
T
he author of our cover page is photographer Thomas Scott Daly. In the United States he used to be a pipeline operator and when he came back after two years from Vietnam where he worked as a combat medic, he had the opportunity to study photography at the San Francisco City College. Tom was a guy who loved sports. He played tennis, skied, and fancied fast motorbikes and beautiful women. On his 32 ft. sailboat, he travelled around San Francisco Bay and up to Bethel Island, where he chose to live for 12 years. The good old times: he sometimes worked on 5 jobs at a time; he loved the island with more bars along the waterfront than inhabitants, even more so through the lens of his Canon. After more than 20 years working with oil companies, he left the States to live in Costa Rica. His destiny took him straight to Uvita, where he lives now with his two dogs, next to the Cortezal River. He is happy having escaped from the American way. He loves adventure, the kind people, and the beauty of nature and wildlife that give him a never ending inspiration for his art. cotti Trinler de Costa Canyoning y Will Todtmann de Aventure Motorsports no sólo comparten su oficina en Uvita, sino también su amor por lo auténtico, las aventuras lejos de la carretera. Más o menos al mismo tiempo llegaron a Uvita y les encantó. Scotti había hecho mucho rafting y barranquismo en los Alpes europeos y Nueva Zelanda. Mientras que Will era distribuidor de motocicletas en su California natal, y solía organizar tours con motos de todo terreno para sus amigos. Vendió todo lo que tenía en los Estados Unidos y llegó aquí sin realmente saber qué hacer. Scotti fue cautivado por la belleza de unas tierras con seis cataratas en los altos de Uvita, una propiedad que muy pronto compró. Will comenzó su negocio con seis cuadraciclos llevando a la gente a las montañas a través de plantaciones de café,
Uvita pequeños pueblos y a las cataratas del Río Morete, a lo largo de caminos de tierra, con impresionantes vistas sobre el Océano Pacífico y la Cola de la Ballena. Hoy en día es un exitoso empresario con mucha experiencia. Su negocio ofrece alquiler de vehículos todo terreno, accesorios y reparación. El es distribuidor autorizado de una marca muy conocida de motos. Scotti les pone a sus clientes un arnés y un casco para que experimenten la aventura más mojada y extrema de su vida, descendiendo por seis impresionantes cataratas una tras de otra, siguiendo las estrictas medidas de seguridad de la SOA (Asociación Suiza de Actividades al Aire Libre). Todo lo que necesita para hacer barranquismo es buena salud y una actitud aventurera. Tanto Scotti como Will son felices padres de familia, sus hijos nacieron en Costa Rica. n

cotti Trinler of Costa Canyoning and Will Todtmann of Adventure Motorsports not only share their office in Uvita but also their love for the real thing: adventures off the road. They came to Uvita more or less at the same time and just loved it. Scotti had done a lot of whitewater rafting and canyoning in the European Alpes and New Zealand. While Will used to be a motorcycle dealer in his native California, organizing dirt bike tours for his friends. Will sold everything in the States, came here without really knowing what to do. Scotti was captivated by the beauty of some land in the mountains above Uvita with six waterfalls, a property he bought very soon after. Will started his business with six ATVs taking people up the mountains through

coffee plantations, little villages and to the River Morete falls, along dirt roads with breathtaking views over the Pacific Ocean and the Whale´s Tail. Today he is a successful entrepreneur with a lot of experience. His business offers ATV rentals, accessories and repairs. He is an authorized dealer for a well-know motorcycle brand. Scotti makes his customers put on a harness and a helmet and has them experience their wettest extreme adventure tour ever, descending through six amazing waterfalls in a row, following the strict security guidelines of the SOA (Swiss Outdoor Association). All you need to do canyoning is good health and an adventurous spirit. Both Scotti and Will are happy family men and their kids were born in Costa Rica. n

El cumplimiento de los sueños
M
e considero una persona muy afortunada, y estoy agradecida por todo lo que tengo: una niña feliz y un amoroso y trabajador compañero de vida. Yo vivo en un lugar lleno de vida y naturaleza, mi trabajo me encanta, estoy sana y rodeada de gente maravillosa. Yo solía pensar que perseguir sueños era como perseguir el final de un arco iris. El yoga me ha enseñado lo contrario. Es difícil de explicar, pero a medida lo voy practicando, he podido desafiarme de forma física y mental. Lo que parecía imposible al principio, resulta ahora ser posible e incluso fácil, dependiendo de la cantidad de práctica, esfuerzo y amor que pongo en él. Me doy cuenta ahora que solía poner obstáculos y excusas que bloqueaban el camino hacia mis sueños y metas. Yo pensaba que todo dependía de la suerte y las circunstancias externas. Ahora sé que somos los únicos responsables de cumplir nuestros sueños, y cuanto más creamos en ello, más apoyo encontraremos en el universo y en la gente que nos quiere. Sin embargo, con el fin de alcanzar esos sueños, hay que respaldarlos con nuestras decisiones, acciones y afirmaciones diarias. Así que para este año nuevo, tómese un tiempo para recordar cuáles son sus más grandes sueños y desafíos a los que tendrá que hacer frente. Escríbalos en una hoja de papel y manténgalos cerca de usted. Recuérdelos todos los días y establezca sus prioridades según lo que está soñando. Sea más consciente de sus acciones y decisiones, y asegúrese de que coinciden con lo que usted está buscando. Y después deje que el universo haga el resto. ¡Namaste! n
Accomplishing dreams
I
consider myself a very lucky person, and I am grateful for all that I have: a happy baby girl and a loving and hard working life partner. I live in a place full of life and nature, I work in something that I love, I am healthy, and surrounded by wonderful people. I used to think that chasing dreams was like chasing the end of the rainbow. Yoga has taught me otherwise. It is hard to explain, but as I practice I have been able to challenge myself in a physical and mental way, and what seemed impossible in the beginning, has turned out to be possible and even easy depending on how much practice, effort and love I have put into it. What I realize now is that I used to put obstacles and excuses that would block the way to my dreams and goals. I used to think that it mostly depended on luck and external circumstances. Now I know that each person is solely responsible for accomplishing their dreams, and the more you believe in them, the more support you’ll find from the universe and the people who love you. But in order to achieve those dreams you need to back them up with your daily decisions, actions and affirmations. So for this upcoming year, take some time to remember which are your biggest dreams and the challenges you will have to face. Write them on a piece of paper and keep them close to you. Remember them every day and set your own priorities based on your dreams. Be more conscious about your actions and decisions and make sure they match with what you are aiming for. Then let the universe do the rest. Namaste! n

Sueños de un Perrito
E
sta historia trata sobre el sueño de un perrito que siempre quiso un hogar donde lo amaran. La mamá de nuestro perrito cuando él era aún cachorro, fue atropellada, así que nuestro amiguito deambuló por 3 días, casi muriéndose de hambre y sed. Finalmente fue adoptado por un niño que lo nombró Bobi. Bobi compartió mucho con su amo. Llegando el día de su cumpleaños, Bobi fue el primero en felicitarlo y su amo lo abrazo muy feliz. Ese día al niño lo llenaron de regalos y sucedió que el regalo de sus padres fue un nuevo perro, un perro muy caro de raza, y que, por supuesto, le quitó protagonismo
a Bobi. Poco a poco lo fueron desplazando. Un día decidieron deshacerse de Bobi e irónicamente lo abandonaron en el mismo lugar donde lo encontraron. Bobi no sabía lo que pasaba y nunca perdió la esperanza que su amo regresara; esperó horas, semanas y meses. Nunca se fue del lugar para que su amo lo encontrara. Bobi pasó hambre, frio, lluvia, maltratos, peleas y enfermedad. Bobi estaba muriendo: parásitos, sarna, mal nutrición, garrapatas. Ya bobi estaba sin fuerzas… hasta que apareció un ángel que no pudo dejar de ayudarlo. Lo llevó para que le dieran atención medica: lo desparasitaron, vitaminaron
y lo recuperaron; subió de peso y su pelaje fue de lo más brillante y hermoso. Nuestro Bobi no se cansa de mover su cola en agradecimiento, esta alerto y atento en cualquier movimiento de su nuevo amo. Ya Bobi tiene 8 años y cree que es el perro mas afortunado del mundo. A Bobi se le cumplió su sueño… Dedicado a todos los perros de la calle que han cumplido su sueño al ser adoptados responsablemente. En especial a Bobi, Bethovis, Flica, Churumba, Pez, Viejo, Snow-fox, Canela, Loquillo, Tres patas, Dogo, Badu, Bolo. Chispa y Harvey. n
A Dog’s Dream
T
his story is about a dog’s dream - he always wanted a home where people would love him. The mother of our dog was hit by a car while he was still a puppy, so our friend wandered for 3 days almost dying of hunger and thirst. He was finally taken in by a child who named him Bobi. Bobi shared much with his master. On his birthday, Bobi was the first to congratulate him and his master embraced him happily. That day the child was showered with presents and his parents’ gift was a new very expensive purebred dog. Of course, now Bobi was no longer the center of attention, and little

by little they lost interest in him. One day they decided to get rid of Bobi and ironically they left him in the same place where they found him. Bobi did not know what was happening and never lost hope that his master would come back. He waited for hours, weeks and months and never left the place to make it easy for his master to find him. Bobi suffered hunger, cold, rain, abuse, fighting and diseases. Bobi was dying because of parasites, scabies, malnutrition and ticks. Bobi had no more strength... Then an angel appeared that helped him. She took him to the vet, who dewormed him, gave
him vitamins and he recovered. He gained weight and his coat is now brilliant and beautiful. Our Bobi never tires of wagging his tail in gratitude. He is alert and attentive to every movement of his new master. Bobi is 8 years old and believes he is the luckiest dog in the world. Bobi´s dream came true. Dedicated to all the stray dogs that have been responsibly adopted. Especially to Bobi, Bethovis, Flica, Churumba, Pez, Viejo, Snow-fox, Canela, Loquillo, Tres patas, Dogo, Badu, Bolo. Chispa and little Harvey. n

S
onia, la proprietaria del Centro de Información de Uvita, está celebrando el 5to aniversario de su empresa. Vino a la zona hace casí 10 años trabajando con organizaciones ambientales como ASANA y ASOPARQUE. Enamorada de la zona, no quiso regresar a Colombia – su país natal, sino, siguiendo el consejo de amistades, abrió un diminuto centro de información turística dentro de en un pequeño abastecedor en Uvita. Su primer cliente fue un estadounidense que le preguntó donde estaba Dominical y ella apunto hacia el norte. Le regaló $ 5, y así comenzó. Sonia recopilaba contactos y los clasificaba, y estaba en el sitio correcto en el momento correcto - cuando Uvita experimentó un auge increíble. Y pronto llegaron multitudes de turistas pidiendo tours e información. Hoy día, Sonia no solo ofrece servicios para el viajero sino también a los residentes de la zona (por ejemplo los apartados postales). Le encanta jugar un papel importante en la comunidad, ofreciendo servicios de alto estandar de calidad. Siempre con una sonrisa. Su equipo lo integran tres chicas Marcela Sequeira, Estela Varela y Francine Ocampo, que hablan inglés, francés y hasta alemán. “El turismo ha cambiado en los últimos años” dice Sonia. “Ahora vienen mucho más europeos.” Sonia está muy agradecida por la confianza que le ha dado la gente, lo cual constituye un reto constante de siempre mejorar su oferta. “Es el juego ganas tu – gano yo.” Ballena Tales felicita al Centro de Información de Uvita. n

S
onia, the owner of the Uvita Information Center, is celebrating her company’s 5th Anniversary. She came to the area almost 10 years ago working with environmental organizations such as ASANA and ASOPARQUE. In love with the area, she did not return to Colombia - her native country, but on the advice of friends, she opened a tiny tourist information center in a small food store in Uvita. Her first client was a North American who asked her where he Dominical was. She pointed to the north and he gave her $5. And so it all began. Sonia compiled and classified her contacts, and she was in the right place at the right time – when Uvita experienced an incredible boom. And very soon lots of tourists came asking for tours and information. Today, Sonia not only offers services to travellers but also to residents (e.g. Post Office Boxes). She loves to play an important role in the community, offering a high standard of quality service, always with a smile. Her team consists of three young women Marcela Sequeira, Estela Varela and Francine Ocampo, who speak English, French and even German. “Tourism has changed in recent years,” says Sonia. “Now many more Europeans visit.” Sonia is very grateful for the confidence she has received from her customers, which constitutes a constant challenge to continuously improve her services. “It is the ‘You win – I win’ game.” Ballena Tales congratulates the Uvita Information Center. n

imm está orgulloso de su esposa Pilar. Estar presente en el calendario de TRIPOD no le causa celos. "Ella se ve muy bien y me gusta lucirla". La ex Miss Bayreuth (ciudad alemana famosa por los festivales de cine y lugar donde estudió) fue inmediatamente convencida para participar en un calendario por una causa tan noble: ayudando a TRÍPOD a recaudar fondos para esterilizar y castrar perros callejeros o perros cuyo propietario no pudiera pagar el costo de la cirugía. Pilar es un miembro muy activo de nuestra comunidad y es miembro de la junta directiva de CAP y de CATOBA. Siendo propietario de un elegante complejo de villas y mujer de negocios, ella ama el estilo relajado de vida aquí que se refleja en ella misma y en sus alrededores. n

aroline no se dejó convencer tan fácilmente por su marido Hans. Ella pensó que no era fotogénica, hasta que el fotógrafo Marco Gutiérrez le demostró lo contrario. Le hizo sentirse a gusto sólo cubriéndose con sus dos perros y realmente lo pasó muy bien. Caroline, propietaria de un restaurante gourmet en la zona, se comprometió a ser una buena embajadora para la población de perros de Costa Ballena. Ella piensa que el calendario del Trípod es una excelente iniciativa para crear conciencia sobre la tristeza que viven los perros abandonados. Su consejo: ¡Compre el calendario y envíelo a sus amigos como regalo de Navidad! n

Pilar is a very active member of our community, she is a CAP and CATOBA board member. Owner of elegant resort villas and a businesswoman, she loves the laid back lifestyle which she reflects in herself and in her surroundings. n

aroline was not as easily convinced by her husband Hans. She thought she was not really photogenic, until the photographer Marco Gutierrez showed her otherwise. He made her feel at ease just covering herself with her two dogs, and she really had a good time. Caroline, the owner of a gourmet restaurant in the area, promised to be a good embassador for the dog population of Costa Ballena. She thinks that the Tripod calendar is an excellent iniciative to raise awareness about the horrible conditions endured by stray dogs here. Her advice: Buy the calendar and send it to your friends as a Christmas present! n

Un pueblo indígena a la orilla del Terraba
Cuasran (el legendario cacique mayor) vigila la sangre que corre por el bosque y siente el aliento que pasa por los arboles. Cuasran cuida a sus hijos de la maldad, de la soberbia, de los que quieren callar, de los que quieren más; lucha por sus hijos que prometen vida, que quieren paz y luz, y que quieren que por fin un día sus pies mueran donde nacieron, con sus miradas brillosas, con su piel fresca y libre de marcas. Hace 200 años se fundó el pueblo indigena de Curré (a 28 km de Palmar y 32 km de Buenos Aires). Está situado a la orilla del Rio Terraba. La gente de Curré tiene el mismo origen étnico que los Boruca. Visitamos a don Edixon Mora Lázaro en su Taller Cújsrót del arte tradicional de los Borucas.

uimos cordialmente recibidos por una vecina que sabe de medicina natural. Dos de nuestros amigos padecieron de alguna molestia y fueron atendidos con un elixir de hierbas. Se llevaron plantas medicinales a casa con las instrucciones de cómo aplicarlas. Edixon nos contó anécdotas y nos mostró sus máscaras con orgullo. Algunas de ellas fueron “bailadas y sudadas” durante las pasadas Fiestas de Los Diabilitos. A principios de cada mes de febrero, los Diablitos presentan sus danzas tradicionales. Son los diablitos contra el Toro, quien representa al intruso. , dice Edixon. Él elabora sus máscaras con madera balsa y dos de sus sobrinas las pintan con mucha delicadeza. En el camino al pueblo nos enseñó el primer liceo en

Curré, el Yimba Cdcj (abuela Yimba). Nos faltó conocer a la gran cocinera del pueblo, doña Fidelia, pero el tiempo apremió. ¡Volveremos, y no solo para las fiestas! Los Boruca eran un grupo de cacicazgos que gobernaba la mayor parte de la costa del Pacífico, desde Quepos hasta la frontera de Panama, incluyendo la península de Osa. Su idioma, hoy casi extinto, es el Brunca que se enseña en la escuela. Están tratando de recuperar parte de su identidad. El turismo es clave en esta tarea, ya que los recursos que dejan los visitantes pueden reinvertirse y a la vez pueden dar a conocer su cultura, motivando a los jovenes a aprenderla, respetarla y cuidarla. n

An indigenous village on the banks of the Terraba River Cuasran (the legendary chieftain) watches over the blood that runs through the woods and feels the breath that passes through the trees. Cuasran protects his children from evil and from the arrogance of those who want to silence them, those who want more. He fights for his children that promise life, who want peace and light, and want to one day die where they were born with bright eyes, fresh skin and free of marks. The indigenous town of Curré (28 km from Palmar Sur and 32 km from Buenos Aires) was founded years ago along the Terraba River. Curré´s people are of the same ethnicity as the Boruca. We visited Edixion Mora Lazaro of the Cújsrót Borucan Artshop where they make traditional Borucan artwork.
W
e were cordially received by a neighbor who cures with natural medicines. Two of our friends had some ailments, and doña Celedina treated them with an herbal elixir and gave them medicinal plants to take home. Edixon, while sharing anecdotes, proudly showed us his masks. Some of them were “danced and sweated” over the past Festival of Los Diabilitos. At the beginning of February, the Curré present their traditional dances: the devils against the bull, which represents the intruder. ”You have to drink plenty of ‘chicha’ (fermented corn booze) to cope with the bruises and falls suffered by the warriors during the 4 day festival,” says Edixon. Edixon’s masks are mostly made of balsa wood and two of his nieces paint them with great delicacy. On the way to the village, we go past the
first high school in Curré, called Yimbo Cdcj (grandmother Yimbo). We were short of time so we couldn’t meet Mrs. Fidelia, who is a great cook. We will return, not just for the festival! In the past, the Boruca were made up of a group of chiefdoms that ruled most of Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, from Quepos to what is now the Panamanian border, including the Osa Peninsula. The Boruca traditionally spoke the Boruca language, which is now nearly extinct, but at school taught to the kids. Today they are trying to recover part of their identity. Tourism is key to this task, since the resources left by visitors can be reinvested and at the same time their culture is getting better known. This in turn encourages the young people to learn, respect and care. n

Proyecto en Bahía entre ADI y CACOBA
H
ace unos 2 años nació la idea de rescatar la Casona de Bahía (Primera edificación en la historia de Bahía) y las esferas de piedra que se encuentran en sus alrededores. Esta iniciativa hizo que la ADI (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de Uvita) realizara una serie de gestiones a través del IDA (Instituto de Desarrollo Agrario), tanto para lograr que la propiedad fuese traspasada a la ADI, como para obtener recursos que sirvieran para las remodelaciones necesarias. El proyecto ha sido muy
complicado y se ha visto trabado por la burocracia de nuestro país. Sin embargo, con mucha satisfacción, deseamos hacer conocer a los pobladores de Bahía Ballena y aledaños, que con la ayuda y el empuje de la nueva Cámara de Turismo y Comercio de Costa Ballena de Osa (CACOBA), y en especial gracias al apoyo de su Presidente Tom Nagel, este proyecto se ha reactivado y esperamos que muy pronto se haga realidad un centro cultural de atractivo turístico para nuestra zona. n

Necesita encontrar a tres familias más para ubicar el gen exacto y así estudiarlo y hallar un remedio a estas criaturas que tanto sufren, ya que la enfermedad las llega a incapacitar y su cuerpo se va convirtiendo en huesos. La Fibrodisplasia Osidificante Progresiva no tiene cura, nacen huesos en cualquier zona del cuerpo: músculos y tendones, los cuales no son operables, si no crecen solo más fuertes. María Claudia actualmente es oxigeno-dependiente y su caja toráxica no se desarrolla, pero sus órganos sí, eso hace que el espacio sea cada vez más pequeño y no le permite respirar. n

Her family needs to locate three more families to discover the exact gene and thus to study and find a remedy for these creatures who suffer so much as the disease is disabling and the body turns into bone. The Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva has no cure, bone grows anywhere in the body and they are not operable because they would grow even stronger. he “flamingo times” of standing on one leg are over. The bilingual Escuela Verde school has moved from a little place in Uvita, crowded with kids and teachers, to their new light and ample installations in Ballena. Two young Americans, Noemi Geer and Cheryl Margoluis whose concern in the beginning w as to procure a good education for their own small daughters, made it possible. “The Tresemer family who donated the land was extremely generous and helpful. This allowed us to build a school of these dimensions and vision. The process to achieve all the permits with the 12 required government agencies took very long”, says Cheryl. Now, both the little students and the teachers are happy. The classrooms, which can hold up to 15 pupils each, are equipped with materials in one or the other language. There is a library, a kitchen and beautiful green areas for the kids to play during their breaks. The children quickly become bi-lingual and are very supportive with one another. Jan Dwire and the Costa Ballena Women’s Network recently visited the school. os “tiempos flamencos”, de estar parados sobre una sola pierna, pertenecen al pasado. La Escuela Verde bilingüe se cambió del pequeño lugar abarrotado de niños y maestros en Uvita, a su nueva sede luminosa y amplia en Ballena. Dos señoras estadounidenses, Noemi Geer y Cheryl Margoluis – cuya preocupación al principio era de asegurar una buena educación para sus propias hijas pequeñas, lo hicieron posible. “La familia Tresemer que donó el terreno fue extremadamente generosa y servicial. Esto nos permitió construir una escuela de estas dimensiones y visión. El proceso para conseguir todos los permisos con los doce organismos gubernamentales involucrados tomó mucho tiempo”, dijo Cheryl. Pero ahora, tanto los estudiantes como los profesores son felices. Las aulas, con capacidad para 15 alumnos cada una, están equipadas con materiales de uno u otro idioma. Hay una biblioteca, una cocina y hermosas áreas verdes para que los niños jueguen durante su recreo. Muy pronto los niños se convierten en bilingües y se ayudan mutuamente. Jan Dwire y la Red de Mujeres de Costa Ballena visitaron a la escuela recientemente. Ella promueve un programa de Abuelos que podría enriquecer la educación de los niños aún más. n

esde diciembre de 2010, la Cusinga Eco Lodge tiene la Bandera Azul en la Categoría “Acciones para mitigar el cambio climático”. Así mismo desde 2009 tiene cuatro hojas de cinco, en certificación sostenible. Este año incorporó Playa Arco al Programa Bandera Azul, en la categoría “Playas”, con un comité integrado por colaboradores del hotel. Constantemente se realizan limpiezas de playa con grupos de visitantes y estudiantes extranjeros. Asimismo, inscribieron la Quebrada Grande en la categoría “Cuencas”, con el fin de protegerla aún más, generar campañas de limpieza y reforestar sus márgenes. Tienen un vivero con más de 300 árboles. En el mes de diciembre cuando presenten el informe al Laboratorio Nacional de Aguas y al Instituto Costarricense de Turismo, conocerán cuantas estrellas recibirá Playa Arco y la micro cuenca de la Quebrada Grande. n

ince December 2010, the La Cusinga Eco Lodge has the Blue Flag in the category "Actions to mitigate climate change." Likewise, since 2009 they have four leaves out of five in Certification of Sustainability. This year they included Arco Beach in the Blue Flag Program under the category “Beaches” with a committee made up of hotel staff. Beach cleanups are constantly done with groups of visitors and foreign students. They have also signed up the stream called ‘Quebrada Grande’ under the “river basin” category so as to further protect it, creating cleanup campaigns and reforesting the river banks. They have a nursery with more than 300 trees. When they submit their report to the National Water Laboratory and to the Costa Rican Tourism Board in December, they will know how many stars Arco Beach and the Quebrada Grande river basin will have obtained. n

orge Herrera, de una de las más viejas familias en Ojochal, nos invitó a dar una vuelta por su finca para apreciar sus animales. En la propiedad de 40 ha pastean unas 50 cabezas de ganado. Sin ataduras, con suculento pasto y libres de enfermedades. “Ponemos mucho cuidado a las bestias. Dos veces al año se les vacuna, se desparasitan y se les da vitaminas. Por supuesto, no trabajamos con hormonas,” nos explica. “Tenemos el sello de calidad de SENASA (Servicio Nacional de Salud Animal).
“Tenemos cruces entre Brahman y Pardo, Indo-Brasil y Nelore. Los toros son musculosos y fuertes y son ellos y los novillos o las novillas (vacas que no han parido) que tienen la mejor carne.” Jorge solía vender su carne a exportadores en la capital hasta que le vino la idea de abrir la carnicería La Ojochaleña en su propio pueblo. Ahora hay lo que todos esperábamos: carne fresca y buena a excelentes precios. No solo los fanáticos de la barbacoa estarán felices. n

orge Herrera, from one of the oldest families in Ojochal, invited us to walk around his farm to see his animals. About 50 head of cattle graze on this 40 ha property - unbound, with succulent grass and disease free. “We take great care of the animals. Twice a year they are vaccinated, de-wormed and administered vitamins. Of course, we do not work with hormones,” he explained. “We have the quality seal from SENASA (National Animal Health Service). We have crossbred the cattle between Brahman and Pardo, Indo-Brazilian and Nellore. The bulls are muscular and strong. These, the steers and the heifers (cows that have never calved) have the best meat. Jorge used to sell the meat to exporters in the capital until he made up his mind to open the butcher shop La Ojochaleña in his hometown. Now we’ve got what we all were hoping for: good fresh meat at excellent prices. The BBQ fans will not be the only ones who are happy. n

Educación ambiental para Costa Ballena en la Reserva Playa Tortuga

E
n el Programa de Educación Ambiental de Reserva Playa Tortuga, los escolares y la comunidad local son los actores principales. Este año realizamos muchas actividades como el taller de reforestación con la participación de 90 escolares, provenientes de las escuelas Verde, Tortuga y Puerto Nuevo. Los niños reforestaron el bosque ribereño del río Balso, utilizando 20 especies nativas de Osa. Todas las escuelas locales están invitadas a participar en estas actividades, también al nuevo Taller de Mariposas de Costa Rica, el cual fue inaugurado con la visita de más de 100 niños y niñas de la Escuela Tortuga. En este taller contamos con la participación de voluntarios provenientes de España, Suiza, Inglaterra, Holanda, Estados Unidos y Canadá, quienes interactuaron con los escolares y colaboraron para que la actividad fuera un gran éxito. Además, nuestro Programa de Conservación de Tortugas Marinas también forma parte de estos esfuerzos. El nacimiento y liberación de neonatos (bebés) de tortuga lora es de gran atractivo no solo para niños. Es una actividad que se llevará a cabo hasta principios de enero 2012. Invitamos a toda la comunidad de Costa Ballena a colaborar con la educación ambiental de nuestra comunidad. n
Environmental education for Costa Ballena at the Playa Tortuga Reserve
T
he school and the community are the major players in the Environmental Education Program of the Playa Tortuga Reserve. This year there were many activities including a reforestation program with the participation of 90 students from the Verde, Tortuga and Puerto Nuevo schools. The children reforested the riparian forest of the Balso River, using 20 native species of the Osa canton. All local schools are invited to participate in these activities, as well in the new Butterflies of Costa Rica Workshop, which opened with the visit of more than 100 school children from the Tortuga school. In this workshop we had the participation of volunteers from Spain, Switzerland, England, Holland, USA and Canada, who interacted with the kids and helped make the activity a great success. Furthermore, our Sea Turtles Conservation Program is also part of these efforts. The birth and release of Kemp Ridley turtle hatchlings is very attractive not just for children. It is an activity that will take place until early January 2012. Sueñan con tener una vida sana y larga, una buena casa o un automóvil, una vida familiar feliz o tener éxito. Pregunte a su alrededor. Todo el mundo tiene un sueño. Y todos los sueños tienen una cosa en común. Ellos permanecerán sueños, una fantasía, un deseo y una buena idea si usted sigue hablando de ellos sin actuar. La acción es la única diferencia entre un sueño y la posible realización del mismo. Las personas que están llevando a cabo sus sueños lo saben. Puede esperar que su sueños se hagan milagrosamente realidad, como un regalo de Dios, Alá o alguna entidad espiritual. Si usted cree en que esto funciona, le deseo buena suerte y mucha paciencia.
Otras personas creen que si siguen los pasos por ejemplo explicados en el libro ‘El Secreto’, donde sólo hay que pedir lo que se desea, y como en una tienda de comestibles, le será entregado. Achieving your dream is hard work, it will make you sweat. You will have major obstacles on the road like people who´ll try to stop you from pursuing your dream. But it will all be worthwhile. zulejos de cerámica o de piedra natural o baldosas de vidrio no deberían caerse. Hay piscinas de baldosas que se remontan a más de 100 años y siguen teniendo un buen desempeño. Azulejos instalados correctamente en una gran piscina o spa se ven muy bien, le dan prestigio, y deberían durar la vida útil de la piscina. Lo más probable es que cuando se instaló el azulejo no se instaló según los estándares de la industria o tienen varios defectos de compactación. Tenga en cuenta que la mayoría de los instaladores no aprenden el oficio en una escuela técnica, sino más bien aprenden haciendo el trabajo. A menudo no están familiarizados con los estándares de la industria o la complejidad de las aplicaciones de alto riesgo, tales como piscinas y spas que necesitan ser debidamente
impermeabilizados. Hemos reparado cientos de piscinas con una instalación incorrecta. Lo más común es que el instalador anterior no hizo uso de la correcta aplicación delgada para sujetar la pieza y/o intentó utilizar un pegamento no diseñado para la aplicación bajo agua. Cortar las esquinas para ahorrar dinero resulta en un problema en muy corto tiempo. Otra cosa que observamos cuando el azulejo se cae, es que la química del agua es inadecuada. El agua de su piscina debería mantener los niveles de dureza de calcio de 200-400 ppm para evitar que el agua corroda y ataque el pegamento nuevo y cualquier pieza metálica, incluyendo su equipo. Are your swimming pool and spa tiles falling off?
T
iles, whether they are ceramic tiles or natural stone or glass tiles, should not fall off. There are all-tiled pools that go back over 100 years and they are still performing well today. When tile is installed correctly in a great pool or spa, it not only looks great and prestigious, but should last the life of the pool. Chances are when the tile was installed it was not installed per industry standards and it has several compounding defects. Keep in mind that most installers do not learn their trade from a trade school, but rather learn on the job, so quite often they are not familiar with industry standards or the complexity of high risk applications such as swimming pools and spas that need to be properly
waterproofed. We have repaired hundreds of swimming pools that were improperly installed. The most common thing is that the previous installer did not use the proper thin-set to attach the tile and/ or tried to use a grout not designed for underwater application. When corners are cut to save money, it is a sure way to have a problem in a very short time. Another issue we see with tile falling off is improper water chemistry. Your pool water must maintain calcium hardness levels of 200-400 PPM to stop the water from being corrosive and attacking the new grout and any metals including your equipment. We offer free water testing to see how your calcium levels are in your pool and we can repair any pool problems you may have. n

La Jagua ¿E
stá en camino a Puerto Jiménez? Entonces no se pierda entrar a La Jagua, que es una tienda de artesanía muy especial. La “jagua” es el fruto de un árbol del cual los indígenas extraen tinte para sus textiles y para hacer tatuajes. La propietaria del pequeño establecimiento, justo al lado del aeropuerto, es una joven llamada Karen Herrera. Ella trabaja con los grupos étnicos a lo largo del Pacífico Sur, y cada pieza que vende es única y hecha a mano. Pero la verdadera pasión de Karen es soplar vidrio. Ella aprendió esta habilidad en los Estados Unidos. “Se puede soplar vidrio o utilizar un soplete, dependiendo de lo que desea hacer”, nos informó. A Karen le encanta el color y crea obras de arte con el vidrio. Hace joyería para ocasiones especiales justo en el tono que hace juego con su vestido, o hermosos aretes y pulseras. A “jagua” is the fruit of a tree which the indigenous people extract pigment from to dye their textiles and make tatoos. The owner of the little store just next to the airport is a young lady called Karen Herrera. She works with the ethnic groups along the South Pacific and each piece is unique and handmade. But Karen´s real passion is glass blowing. She learned this skill in the United States. “You can blow glass or use a blow torch, depending on what you want to make”, she explained. Karen loves color and creates pieces of art in glass. You can find jewelry for special occasions that matches your dress, or beautiful earrings and bracelets. Karen holds glass blowing workshops.
