2023 William A. Martin III Distinguished Fiji Award

The Archons established the Distinguished Fiji Award in 1964. It is presented annually to no more than six graduate brothers who shall be deserving of recognition for their faithful and unselfish service to Phi Gamma Delta or their special contribution to mankind and society at large. The award was renamed the William A. Martin III Distinguished Fiji Award in 2019, upon Bill's retirement as Executive Director. To date, 478 Phi Gams have been honored with the Distinguished Fiji Award.

Henry J. Fitzgerald (WPI 1975)

Brother Fitzgerald has been involved for almost 50 years in the F.A. Morse Association, the house corporation for the Pi Iota Chapter at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Most recently he served as President of the Association, managing the project to build a new $6.1 million chapter house from design development to finished construction. In recognition of the indispensable role he played, the 14,500-square-foot house is named the Henry J. Fitzgerald Chapter House. He has served his alma mater on the Board of Trustees from 2012-22 and on the Dean’s Council of Strategic Advisors in the School of Business. The WPI Alumni Association awarded him its Herbert F. Taylor Award for Distinguished Service to WPI. In his hometown of Shrewsbury, MA, he served as Chair of the Board of Selectmen from

2011-17 and served on the School Building Committee for over 20 years. Henry spent most of his professional career with Genzyme Corporation as it grew from startup in the early 1980s to the world’s third-largest biotechnology company. He retired as Vice President of Operations and Planning.

Kevin F. Mitchelson (Kansas 1979)

Brother Mitchelson is recognized for his service to Phi Gamma Delta, his community, his state, and the legal profession. He was House Corporation Treasurer for the Pi Deuteron Chapter at Kansas for 16 years (1980-96) and more recently co-chaired the capital campaign for a major renovation of the chapter house. He served the International Fraternity from 2008-14 as General Counsel, providing legal guidance to the Archons, staff, chapters, and graduate

volunteers, and as Archon Secretary from 2014-18. He currently represents Phi Gamma Delta on the board of directors of the Fraternity Sorority PAC. Kevin is a partner in the law firm of Wheeler & Mitchelson in Pittsburg, KS. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Kansas Bar Foundation and from 2005-17 served on the Kansas Board of Law Examiners. He chaired the Kansas Highway Advisory Commission from 2000-05. His volunteer work with the Boy Scouts has spanned 38 years and every level of Scouting from a local troop to the National Council.

Daniel G. Ownby

(Oklahoma State 1991) Brother Ownby recently completed a three-year term as National Chair of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). His lifelong involvement in Scouting has extended from the local level
