President's Message

A

t the recent North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) meeting, I had the opportunity to participate in a dinner discussion with noted author and Brookings scholar Dr. Richard Reeves.

The talk around the table was on the needs of young men and the role that fraternities can play. Dr. Reeves provided several chilling insights into the significant challenges young men face today and how these have evolved since many of us were in school.

Dr. Reeves pointed out that college enrollment for men is down. In 1972, colleges and universities enrolled 13% more men than women. In 2022, this has flipped and now men make up only about 40% of the student body.

More than 50% of women graduate within four years of starting their degree, whereas less than 40% of men complete their degree within four years.

In addition, men are moving out of jobs that traditionally allowed them to serve as mentors and role models to young boys. In the 1980s, 33% of teachers in K-12 classrooms were men; now it is only about 24%. Fewer male teachers mean fewer male coaches.

Most tragically, while suicide rates are up for women and men between 15 and 24 years of age since 1999, four times as many young men take their lives each year, and the rate of increase in suicide for men between 1999 and 2021 is double that for women.

These statistics are sobering, but research also suggests that fraternities play an important role in supporting positive mental health and helping men to succeed inside and outside the classroom. As an organization devoted to building character and developing young men, Phi Gamma Delta is well-positioned to provide this needed experience.

I am convinced that for Phi Gamma Delta, our strength is our graduate brothers who can serve as role models and provide support from shared experiences. We have more than 134,000 living graduate members, yet less than 2% remain involved in traditional volunteer roles as Purple Legionnaires or Board of Chapter Advisors members. These roles are vital to the success of each chapter, and now more than ever, we cannot ignore the need for mentors and role models who actively engage with our undergraduate members.

What roles do we need graduate brothers to fill? We need brothers to advise on chapter operations, such as teaching a Treasurer how to create and execute a budget. We also need graduate brothers able to spend time with rising seniors and teach them how to write a résumé, prepare for job interviews, and develop a plan to secure a job upon graduation.

Whether in formal or informal roles, we need graduates to serve as role models to help foster the character development of our undergraduates.

Phi Gamma Delta offers practical training and insight into leadership skills, character development, and personal growth.

In a setting where our undergraduate members are inundated with classwork, social media, outside activities and numerous distractions, it is hard to imagine how adding more to their plate will achieve the desired results.

At the NIC dinner, Dr. Reeves quoted writer and educator J. F. Roxburgh, former headmaster at Stowe School in England. He stated that J. F. Roxburgh's goal was to develop students with good character and moral courage, young men that would be "acceptable at a dance and invaluable in a shipwreck." I cannot think of a better way to describe what we should strive to foster and develop within our Brotherhood, and I believe that the best way to achieve this is through our graduate brothers.

Gamma Gram Greve Appointed Archon Councilor Aaron Greve (Rose-Hulman 2025) was appointed Archon Councilor by the Archons in August 2023. Aaron is double majoring in mechanical engineering and engineering design at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where he joined the Rho Phi Chapter. Currently, he serves his chapter as Historian. Additionally, Aaron attended the Academy in January 2022, the Leadership Institute in June 2022, the 174th Ekklesia in August 2022 and the Academy in January 2023.

Ziza Appointed Director of Housing The Archons appointed John Ziza (Ohio 1978) as the Fraternity’s Director of Housing.

In this Appointed Volunteer Leader role, John will advise the Archons and staff on matters related to fraternal housing, chair the Fraternity’s Housing Advisory Committee, and lead efforts to provide support, resources, and guidance to current and future house corporations. Previously, John served as Chairman of the Housing Advisory Committee since 2021, and he served on the 1848 Properties Board of Directors. He also served the Alpha Omega Graduate Association as President and in other officer roles and on the house corporation for the Alpha Omega Chapter at Ohio University for more than 30 years. Professionally, John is President and CEO of ADgility Solutions Inc., an outsource provider of technology services for the marketing communications industry.

News, Events, Feedback

Headquarters Staff Updates In May, Taren Robin left staff after serving as Senior Executive Assistant for four years. She first joined staff as Executive Administrative Assistant in August 2017. Taren now works in project management at Stantec in Lexington, Kentucky.

Nolan Dziubakowski joined the staff as Data Systems Coordinator on August 14. In this new role, Nolan performs administrative duties related to the International Headquarters' data management systems, and he also serves as the staff 's liaison with outside IT support. Prior to joining the staff, Nolan worked as a circulation clerk and staff association committee member at the Paul Sawyier Public Library since 2020. He received his B.A. in computer information technology from Western Kentucky University in 2019 and his A.A.S. in computer information security from Jefferson Community & Technical College in 2017.

In August, Erin Huebner assumed the role of Associate Director of Communications. In this new position, Erin is primarily responsible for managing the Fraternity's digital communications, including social media, email, graphic design and the website. She also creates strategic marketing plans, assists with event communications and maintains the Fraternity's branding.

Erin first joined the staff as Coordinator of Communication in July 2022. Erin earned her B.A. in strategic communications in 2021 and her M.A. in communication & business leadership in 2022 from High Point University. She is a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.

| Tucson, AZ

⮟ Upsilon Alpha hosted

their Diamond Cup philanthropy for The Foundation for Blind Children (TFBC) in March. To raise money, the Chapter held a social media competition, a banner competition, a sand volleyball tournament and a carnival with live music, raising over $12,000 for TFBC.

Akron

| Akron, OH In September, Alpha Omicron hosted its annual Puppy Party philanthropy event. The Puppy Party supports One of a Kind Pet Rescue, a no-kill animal shelter in Akron, Ohio.

This year, the Chapter raised over $1,000 for the rescue.

Jose Carlos Garcia (2024) was elected Greek Liaison for Akron's Undergraduate Student Government.

Alberta

| Edmonton, AB

⮝ On October 21, Epsilon Alpha hosted their annual Pig Dinner. The Chapter held an initiation ceremony a few hours before the event and celebrated the new brothers who were initiated. Many graduate brothers attended the ceremony, some of whom had not attended an initiation ceremony for decades.

| Waco, TX On October 18-20, the Kappa Chapter hosted their Fright Night haunted house philanthropy event, supporting the American Red Cross (ARC). While the haunted house was free for all, the Chapter sold event T-shirts and collected donations for the ARC.

California Irvine | Irvine, CA

During the 2023 University of California Irvine Sorority & Fraternity Life Awards ceremony, Konrad

The Omega Phi Chapter earned first place in the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority's 2023 Lipsync philanthropy event. All 24 Greek organizations on campus participated in the event.

The Chapter also took first place at Knight Thon, the University's dance marathon philanthropy, which supports the Miracle Network.

Matthew Faur (2025) gave a Ted talk at TEDxUCF on the question of "Why Me?"

Clemson

| Clemson, SC The Chi Alpha Chapter ended the spring 2023 semester strong. They completed over 760 community service hours and raised over $37,000 for various philanthropies.

During the fall semester, the Chapter partnered with the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and won Clemson's Homecoming Float competition in October. As first place winners, the Chapter received prize money, which brothers will donate to a philanthropy.

John Shoemaker (2024) was named as one of the NIC's (North American Interfraternity Conference) 2023 Undergraduate Award of Distinction honorees.

This award recognizes fraternity men who, throughout their collegiate experience, have found an outlet for development as both a leader and a better man. They are exemplary members of their organizations and serve their brothers, campuses and Greek communities with humble confidence.

John was selected for this award because he has been heavily involved in his chapter's leadership since

he joined in spring 2021.

By fall 2021, he was elected Chapter President, leading the Chapter through a successful series of recruitments, philanthropy events and more. He also modeled the values of what a true fraternity member is about, which led to unanimous support for his candidacy as IFC President. John is a constant reflection of fraternity done right and demonstrates strength of character within the IFC at Clemson.

Colorado

| Boulder, CO The Beta Kappa Chapter participated in the IFC's 3v3 basketball tournament philanthropy, supporting the Susan B. Komen Foundation (SBKF). The Chapter won the tournament and helped raise over $1,000 for SBKF. Additionally, during the spring 2023 semester, the Chapter organized a donut

George Washington

| Washington, DC The George Washington Provisional Chapter cohosted their Pig Dinner with the National Capital Fiji (Washington, DC) Graduate Chapter. Three of the Maryland Chapter's Founding Fathers attended the dinner and were a great inspiration to the undergraduate brothers in attendance.

volunteered by cleaning the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington. The Chapter partnered with the National Capital Fijis Graduate Chapter, Purple Heart recipient Ranger James Pierce, American Legion Post 24 from Old Town Alexandria and the Daughters of the American Revolution for this service project.

Joey Zorn (2025) traveled to the University of Alberta to meet Epsilon Alpha brothers. From there, Joey went on a two-day road trip to Banff and Jasper, Alberta to meet brothers from the Upsilon Chi Chapter at Calgary.

Indiana

| Bloomington, IN The Zeta Chapter took home the prestigious Hoosier Grail award during the spring 2023 semester.

This esteemed award is presented to the fraternity that excels in participation and victory across various intramural sports.

Brothers exhibited exceptional athleticism, sportsmanship and camaraderie, participating in a wide range of sports such as basketball, soccer, football, co-ed sports and more.

Through collective effort

and competitive spirit, the Chapter secured victory in numerous events, leading to triumph in the overall standings.

Breckinridge, Colorado, for their annual brotherhood ski trip. Activities included skiing, snowboarding, sightseeing and concerts.

Also, during the spring 2023 semester, the Chapter earned the top GPA for fraternities with over 100 members, and they were awarded the most successful fraternity for initiation.

The Chapter also participated in various philanthropy and service projects throughout the spring 2023 semester. Brothers raised $4,000 dollars for the University's Annual Dance Marathon, supporting a child being treated for cancer at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

Brothers assisted the Iowa City Ronald McDonald Run, a 5k run benefiting the Ronald McDonald House, by directing traffic along the route for the run.

Additionally, the Chapter hosted a Greek life blood drive that yielded over 80 units of blood.

During the fall 2023 semester, the Alpha Iota Chapter welcomed and initiated 29 new brothers.

The Chapter's house mom, Joyce Allen, received the House Mom of the Year Award from the IFC.

Johns Hopkins | Baltimore, MD

In September, Beta Mu undergraduates spent time with several graduate brothers during the University's Soccer Alumni Weekend.

Kansas

| Lawrence, KS During the fall 2022 semester, Pi Deuteron held a philanthropy event for Watts of Love (WOL), a nonprofit founded by Kevin Kuster (1991). On Saturday, the brothers heard Kevin was visiting for the weekend, so they decided to host an impromptu car wash fundraiser, supporting WOL. The car wash came together within 24 hours, and the Chapter raised over $2,500 for WOL. WOL is a nonprofit that brings solar lights to developing countries that do not have access to electricity.

This donation supported Kevin's trip to the Philippines to distribute solar lights to an entire village in April.

Treasurer Ty Hall (2024) was awarded a scholarship for CyberCorps, a cyber

security training program similar to AmeriCorps.

There were over 300 applications from the University of Kansas, and Ty was one of three selected for the scholarship.

Kansas State | Manhattan, KS

Chi Deuteron has excelled academically during the past two semesters. During the fall 2022 semester the Chapter was first out of all fraternities on campus with a 3.48 GPA and 98% of members reporting grades. The Chapter also had 34 out of 54 members get a GPA higher than the all-fraternity average, and 12 members earned a 4.0.

In the spring 2023 semester, the Chapter finished 4th among all fraternities with a 3.48 GPA and 96% of members reporting grades. Additionally, 38 out

of 53 members reported a GPA higher than the allfraternity average, and 10 members earned a 4.0.

Kentucky

| Lexington, KY

⮝ The Upsilon Kappa

Chapter recently hosted its first ever Slapjacks philanthropy event with the Pi Beta Phi Women's Fraternity. They served pancakes and bacon with a slight twist. Participants

had the option to donate a few extra dollars to slap a brother with toppingsfilled pancakes or crack an egg on their head. The event was a huge success, with over $2,400 raised for Save the Children and the Pi Beta Phi Foundation.

Kettering A | Flint, MI

⮟ During the winter 2023 semester, Alpha Gamma A section participated in

and won their second consecutive intramural basketball tournament (pictured) and fourth consecutive indoor volleyball league.

The Chapter also achieved the highest GPA out of all Greek life organizations with a 3.63.

Andrew Nigrine (2024) was inducted into the Gamma Sigma Alpha National Academic Greek Honor Society on August 29. He is a mechanical engineering major.

Knox

| Galesburg, IL Niko Powe (2026) spent

10 weeks completing basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina.

He will also complete job training at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, and he is currently on a six-year contract as a reservist to assist in national and foreign conflicts and events.

Louisiana State | Baton Rouge, LA

⮟ The Beta Rho Chapter

won the University's Max Gruver Award, created in memory of Max Gruver, a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity who lost his life to hazing and alcohol poisoning.

The award recognizes one chapter in the Greek community that prioritizes their members' overall health and well-being through their organization's values and brotherhood. Beta Rho received the award because of their dedication to their own members, the Chapter’s commitment to brotherhood development and continuous support of one another and the community. The Chapter has prioritized bystander intervention through all their member education and focuses on taking the time to be there for each other.

Maine

⮝ Omega Mu did not let

the rain stop them from volunteering with the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter for their 28th annual Hike for the Homeless fundraising event on April 4. The Chapter assisted the Shelter by selling raffle tickets, setting up the event and coordinating hikers.

took Alex Gordon (2026), Tyler Stoesz (2023), Carter Schmidt (2026), Miles Dorsey (2023) and Dawson Blankenship (2026) out to brunch as a reward for being in the top five for GPA in the Chapter.

Amelious started this tradition approximately 20 years ago when he was a chapter advisor, and he decided to keep the tradition alive even though he no longer is an advisor.

Phi Upsilon hosted their

co-hosted the Baskets for Balls basketball tournament with the non-profit Check Your Acorns.

Through the event, brothers raised $1,775 for testicular cancer research and participated in the event alongside six other fraternity chapters.

Night on October 14 to raise money for Boston children in need, doubling the amount raised in last year's event.

Northern Arizona

| Flagstaff, AZ

⮟ Nu Alpha raised over

$6,200 for RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) through their

annual Diamond Girl philanthropy on September 27-29. RAINN works to prevent sexual assault and to support survivors. Seven sororities participated in the three-day event, which included a volleyball tournament, an Instagram competition, cash wars, a karaoke talent show and more. The event winner was the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

On October 3, Nu Eta initiated 23 men, increasing the Chapter's size by over 50%.

On May 24, during Oregon State's annual Greek Awards Ceremony, the Kappa Omicron Chapter was recognized as the 2022 IFC Chapter of the Year, and JJ Mitchell (2025) was named the 2022 IFC Underclassman of the Year.

Dominic Mendlik (2025) was elected Vice President of the Student Government Association. Brother Mendlik is the first member of the Tau Chi Chapter to be elected to any student body office. and recreational activities for those challenged with disabilities within the local community. This year the Chapter held the event at the center of campus for maximum exposure. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and brothers donated to throw pies at brothers for charity.

Through social media, flyers, tabling and reaching out to local businesses, brothers raised nearly $10,000.

Foundations and raised over $150. Brothers also helped raise over $10,000 for the Monroe Carell, Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt by volunteering as security at Nissan Stadium in Nashville and making cold calls to graduate brothers and family members for donations.

Also, during the spring semester, the Chapter conducted the Phi Gam Slam philanthropy and FIJI Freezer, a dunk tank philanthropy event, both supporting the USO. During the fall semester, the Chapter welcomed 37

Nate Moore (2025) and Michael Turell (2025) created Run 4 Wes, a 48-hour philanthropy run, supporting the Wes Smith Scholarship Fund. The run was created in memory Wes, Nate and Michael's classmate, who was shot and killed outside a bar in Fort Worth on August 31.

The Leadership Institute During summer 2023, two sessions of The Leadership Institute were held at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Institute is a three-day leadership development experience. It is offered free for undergraduate members identified as emerging leaders in their chapters thanks to the generous support of graduate brothers and the Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation.

Graduates of the Institute often go on to serve in officer roles as well as other chapter and community leadership positions.

The Summit The 2023 Summit was held at Transylvania University in Lexington on June 16-17. The Summit is a two-day intensive training that offers two tracks: Recruitment and Education. The Recruitment track focused on marketing, vetting candidates, training on ChapterBuilder (the Fraternity’s customer relation management (CRM) tool), planning events, and other essential recruitment tactics.

The Education track focused on developing project management skills, facilitation and using a chapter calendar to improve operations.

O Canada!

Celebrating 100 Years in the True North "Fraternity Becomes International" So declared the headline of the article in the February 1924 issue of The Phi Gamma Delta that chronicled the chartering of the Tau Kappa Chapter at the University of Toronto on December 8, 1923.

By the time of the installation of Tau Kappa, the idea of expanding to Canada had been discussed in Phi Gamma Delta for at least 25 years. At the Fraternity’s 1898 Convention, T. Alfred Vernon (Yale 1875), who chaired the Committee on Expansion, proposed expanding to McGill University and the University of Toronto. The idea was pushed for the next 15 years, but those supporting the move could not gain the approval of enough nearby chapters.

In 1914 Canada, with the rest of the British Empire, entered World War I, and the issue was not pursued again until after the war. Around 1920, official inquiries for the University of Toronto resumed, and this time the effort was successful. On September 6, 1923, the Diamond Jubilee Ekklesia, meeting in

Pittsburgh, unanimously passed a motion that a charter be granted to Phi Sigma Tau, a local fraternity at the University of Toronto.

Phi Gamma Delta was by no means a pioneer among social fraternities in moving into Canada. Zeta Psi, in 1879, was the first fraternity at the University of Toronto, and at the time of Phi Gamma Delta’s entry there in 1923, 10 other international fraternities were already established.

Phi Sigma Tau to Tau Kappa In 1907 four friends at the University of Toronto agreed to establish a new college fraternity. They grew their number to 13, who constituted the first chapter of Phi Sigma Tau Fraternity. From the outset, it was the intent of the founders to eventually petition some national fraternity for a charter, but the group decided to concentrate its efforts for several years in perfecting its organization and laying a sound foundation.

After Canada entered World War I in 1914, over 20 members of Phi Sigma Tau eventually entered military service. In the spring 1916, with so many undergraduate and alumni members enlisted to serve, Phi Sigma Tau ceased operations. For more than three years there was no fraternity activity at the University.

In October 1919, six members returned from the service and, with the help of alumni, rented a chapter house and resumed activities. Within two years, Phi Sigma Tau was firmly re-established. The time had come to widen its scope by seeking to become a chapter of a national fraternity. After research and careful consideration, both the undergraduates and alumni agreed they would petition Phi Gamma Delta.

In December 1922, a delegation of Phi Gamma Delta brothers representing the chapters at Allegheny, Colgate, Cornell, Syracuse and Union and the Buffalo Graduate Chapter visited Phi Sigma Tau, followed in January by a visit from the two Section Chiefs closest to Toronto. As a result, the closest chapters and Section Leaders gave the group’s petition their enthusiastic support. In September 1923, a delegation of four undergraduates and two alumni of Phi Sigma Tau attended the 75th Ekklesia in Pittsburgh, where their petition for a charter was approved by unanimous vote of the delegates.

On the weekend of December 8, 33 brothers representing 19 different chapters traveled to Toronto for the chartering festivities, at that time a record attendance for a chartering. They witnessed and participated in the initiation of 60 new brothers – 32 undergraduates and 28 alumni members of Phi Sigma Tau. Cecil J. “Scoop” Wilkinson (Ohio Wesleyan 1917), the Fraternity’s Editor, noted that the installation of Tau Kappa marked the “enlargement of the precincts of Phi Gamma Delta from the boundaries of our nation to the boundaries of our continent.”

British Columbia Is Next It would be another six years before Phi Gamma Delta grew its presence in Canada to a second campus. In early 1922, eight friends at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver had founded Alpha Gamma Phi with the intention of eventually joining a national fraternity. After growing in membership, organization and campus presence, in fall 1926 the undergraduates and alumni agreed that Phi Gamma Delta was

their target. When Phi Gam leaders and delegates gathered in June 1929 for the Ekklesia in Swampscott, Massachusetts, Alpha Gamma Phi was one of three local fraternities petitioning for a charter. It was the only group that was successful. (The other two groups, from the University of Arizona and UCLA, petitioned again two years later and were approved.)

The Pi Gamma Chapter at British Columbia was chartered on October 5, 1929. Over 50 brothers from other chapters attended to witness the initiation of 55 new brothers – 24 undergraduates and 31 graduates. Among the alumni of Alpha Gamma Phi who were initiated was Percy Williams (1932), who a little over a year earlier had won the 100 and 200metre dashes at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam.

Graduates Drive Growth It would be almost 20 years before the next expansion in Canada with the chartering of the Mu Kappa Chapter at McGill University in Montreal on December 11, 1948. McGill was one of five charterings in the fall of 1948 approved by the Centennial Ekklesia in Pittsburgh earlier that year. Those charterings were the first since 1940, World War II having suppressed any possibility of growth. There were 22 charter members of Mu Kappa, which already occupied a house owned by a chapter house association. The Chapter would operate until 1968, when it was closed.

Even with the unfortunate closing at McGill, Canada held other opportunities for growth. In September 1965, graduate brothers in London, Ontario, acquired a house for a soon-to-be-recruited Delta Colony at the University of Western Ontario. In the early going, the house was unfurnished except for a piano, which the graduates put to good use in recruitment showing their strong Fiji spirit. Among the Canadian institutions where Phi Gamma Delta had expanded to that point, Western was the only one that recognized and supported its fraternity system and invited Phi Gamma Delta to the campus.

With the support of local graduate brothers and the host institution, on February 3, 1968, the Lambda Omega Chapter at the University of Western Ontario was chartered with the initiation of 32 brothers.

A few months after the chartering at Western Ontario, fall 1968 saw the establishment of a Delta Colony at www.phigam.org

[O Canada!] the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Graduate brothers in the Edmonton area were few but provided the guidance and support the colony needed to gain approval for chartering from the 1970 Ekklesia in Cleveland, Ohio. The installation of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter took place on the weekend of October 24, 1970, with the initiation of 12 new brothers and the pledging of another eight men. The new chapter could claim at least two distinctions among Phi Gamma Delta chapters: the most remote, being an 11-hour drive from the nearest chapter, and the northernmost.

The latter distinction was reinforced on the Sunday morning of chartering weekend, when the new brothers and visitors awoke to find the city of Edmonton paralyzed by ten inches of heavy wet snow.

The current lineup of five Canadian chapters was completed with the installation of the second chapter in the Province of Alberta, Upsilon Chi at the University of Calgary, on February 4, 1984.

Impetus for a colonization at Calgary had come from

Gordon Elliott (British Columbia 1955), who lived in Calgary, and from University of Alberta graduates, including Rollie Cook (Alberta 1975), who served as Section Chief at the time of the chartering.

Brother Elliott served as Legate for the chartering, ushering the new chapter into the Fraternity. He also had the thrill of pinning the badge on his son, Bruce (1985), one of the charter members. Calgary is a three-hour drive from Edmonton; thus, with the chartering of Upsilon Chi, Epsilon Alpha no longer held the distinction as the most remote chapter in Phi Gamma Delta.

Since the chartering of Tau Kappa at Toronto 100 years ago, Canadian chapters have initiated almost 5,000 brothers into the Fraternity. Even greater than the membership numbers, however, have been those brothers’ Royal Purple spirit and their devotion to the Values of Phi Gamma Delta.

Tau Kappa’s 100th Anniversary Pig Dinner Powered by Brotherhood

By Mark Trenton (Western Ontario 1986) The 100th Anniversary Pig Dinner of the Tau Kappa Chapter, held on the weekend of November 11-12, 2022, was an amazing experience attended by over 130 brothers from Canada, the U.S. and elsewhere.

The weekend activities started on Friday with the undergraduate chapter laying a wreath in memory of fallen brothers at Soldiers’ Tower at Hart House on the University of Toronto campus. It continued with a service project at the Scott Mission, where brothers stuffed 70 warm-weather kits for this noble charity. As graduate brothers continued to arrive from all over the world, they toured the chapter house at 45 Madison Avenue, reconnected with old friends, and relived days gone by in traditional style at the Madison Avenue Pub. Saturday brought with it a new day and a new event.

The first annual Eh-kklesia was a virtual event bringing together undergraduate brothers from our five chapters across Canada. It was an opportunity to meet, greet and discuss pertinent Fraternity issues from a Canadian perspective. There was excellent participation and discussion, boding well for a continuation of this project and a second annual Eh-kklesia in 2023. Thank you to John Starzynski (Western Ontario 1974), who spearheaded this initiative, and

our new Section Leader Charlie Echlin (Western Ontario 2019) for leading the conversation.

Saturday included a tour of 123 St. George, Tau Kappa’s home until the mid-1960s, and a stirring and well-rehearsed display of the Ritual by the chapter officers. Some in the room had not seen the Ritual performed since graduation – ten, twenty or more years ago! The brothers were attentive and hung on every word. The experience was moving for all.

Of course, Saturday evening culminated with a rousing rendition of “Bringing in the Pig.” The program was expertly choreographed by the 100th Anniversary Committee and was confidently and ably helmed by our stalwart steward of the podium, David Booz (Toronto 1985). The evening was jam packed with speeches, lucky draws, photo ops, silent auctions, memorabilia, history, fun and drama, but they all took second place to the background din of friendship. The excitement of seeing old friends.

The smiles. The laughs. The hugs. The evening was powered by brotherhood.

The 100th Pig Dinner was everything that Tau Kappa's Founders could have hoped for 100 years ago. It was a living acknowledgment that as Phi Gamma Delta has passed from year to year, decade to decade, and generation to generation, its enduring principles of Friendship, Knowledge, Service, Morality and Excellence have lived on and flourished.

Success in New Model Implementation

I

n fall 2022, Phi Gamma Delta began implementation of the New Model to Build Courageous Leaders. This followed the vote of the 174th Ekklesia in August 2022 to eliminate pledging effective July 1, 2024, and immediately allow chapters to initiate new members without a pledging probationary period.

This proposal and decision came after the Ekklesia delegates understood the decades-long challenges related to hazing, higher education enrollment trends which are

While it may seem that the focus of the New Model is the elimination of pledging, in fact the most substantial shifts are in the way our undergraduate chapters recruit and evaluate men before inviting them to join, and the continuous development and educational opportunities for undergraduate members. The New Model puts a greater emphasis on quality, values-based recruitment, reduces the power dynamic inherent in the pledging model and at the heart of fraternity hazing, and aims to provide a more fulfilling undergraduate experience which will positively impact retention through graduation.

Early Adopters - Early Success The decisions of the 174th Ekklesia mean that all undergraduate chapters must adopt a no-pledging joining process by July 1, 2024.

chapters to adopt this process before 2024, paving the way for Early Adopters of the New Model.

Early Adopters are supported by staff and one of thirty-eight trained Chapter Coaches who work with a chapter to develop their implementation plan and support the chapter in its first 12-18 months of implementation.

In the first year (the 2022-23 academic year) more than 40% of undergraduate chapters began implementation. Results and feedback from 2022-2023 Early Adopters have been generally positive. It can, and does, take chapters time to plan and adjust their recruitment and member development techniques. However, once they do, chapters are seeing success.

Preliminary data suggests two significant themes: 1. Early Adopters are initiating more men and retaining them at a greater rate than

their historical 4-year average and compared to non-Early Adopters.

2. New Model chapters are not always inviting more men to join, but they are initiating more and being more selective about who they invite to join.

Early Adopters are sharing numerous anecdotal successes as well, suggesting that they are attracting recruits who would not have been interested under the traditional pledging model, and that new initiates are becoming engaged in their chapters more quickly. This is leading to early successes in increasing retention, though data over time will be used to better measure these results.

The New Model is also wellreceived by our host institutions, and by college/university staff where the Fraternity would like to establish or reestablish a chapter. With the help of our Chapter Coaches, Early Adopters have been successful in implementing the New Model alongside existing campus and/or IFC recruitment and joining policies.

Through the fall 2023 academic term, an additional 45 chapters began implementation, meaning that 73% of chapters have adopted it to date. The Fraternity anticipates additional chapters to begin implementation in late fall 2023 and early spring 2024 so that more than 85% of chapters will implement before it is required on July 1, 2024.

The award is presented annually to a Hellene or Philhellene for outstanding accomplishments in their field. Tim was selected because he has represented the Boston Marathon for many years and has honorably served as the President and Founder of the 26.2 Foundation International Marathon Center. Tim was presented the award at the FHASNE's Annual Dinner Gala on April 29.

Cote Receives Interfraternity Honor At the annual meeting of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) in August, former Archon President Eugene D. "Buddy" Cote (Maine 1981) was awarded the conference's Gold Medal. The Gold Medal recognizes lifelong service to the interfraternal community and/or the NIC and is the highest honor the NIC bestows.

Buddy has been a visionary and consequential leader for Phi Gamma Delta, including as an Archon from 2000-2004 and as Archon President from 2006-2008.

He also spent four years on the headquarters staff, as a Field Secretary from 1981-1983 and Director of Chapter Services from 1983-1985. He then built a career in the fraternity jewelry market, starting with the Balfour Company in 1985 and continuing today with his own company, Legacy Deuteron.

In 2010 Buddy was elected to the NIC board of directors and in 2014 was elected chairman. In the latter role, he

managed a historic change in the NIC’s governance system from the volunteer-driven board to a Governing Council comprised primarily of fraternity CEOs. After the move to the new governance system in 2015, he served until 2022 as Phi Gamma Delta’s representative on the Governing Council.

In accepting the award, Buddy acknowledged the four other Phi Gamma Delta brothers who have received the Gold Medal: Cecil “Scoop” Wilkinson (Ohio Wesleyan 1917), Norman Vincent Peale (Ohio Wesleyan 2020), Bill Zerman (Michigan 1949) and Bill Martin (Mississippi State 1975). He paid special tribute to former Executive Director Bill Zerman, calling him “my powerful mentor, who inculcated in me a love of ‘fraternity’ in the strictest sense of that word.”

On May 20, during WPI's Alumni Weekend, Jay Hedley (1988) received the Robert H. Goddard Award for exceptional professional achievement. Mark Macaulay (1989) had the privilege of presenting the award to Jay with WPI's President.

Marc Voorhees (2023) was recognized with the Distinguished Military Graduate Award at his commissioning on May 12.

The award is given to the top 20% of all Army ROTC senior cadets nation-wide for outstanding academics, athletics and leadership.

Benjamin Seitz (2018) was recently promoted from First Lieutenant to Captain in the U.S. Army. He served as the battalion executive officer of his company and pulled double duty as the commanding officer. t

Volunteer Spotlight Tim Ira (Alberta 2011) Tim Ira has been an active volunteer with the Fraternity since 2014.

He has served as Purple Legionnaire of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter at Alberta (since 2021) and as New Model Chapter Coach for the Upsilon Chi Chapter at Calgary (since January 2023) and the Beta Psi at Boise State and Sigma Tau at Washington chapters (since August 2023). He has also volunteered as a facilitator for The Leadership Institute and Health & Safety programming since 2017, and he has been invited to cohost conversations on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) at the Academy and Ekklesia with Director of DEIB DeVere Kutscher (Davidson 1997). Previously, he served the Edmonton Alberta Graduate Chapter as Treasurer from 2014-17.

Professionally, Tim is a strategic initiative officer at the University of Alberta. He works on indigenous relations and DEIB for the faculties of the Arts, Education, Law and Business departments.

Tim leverages this professional experience when he approaches topics on mental health outreach, sexual violence prevention and new student orientation.

Graduate Volunteer Roles And Their Importance to the Fraternity's Success

Are you interested in volunteering? Graduate volunteers are the lifeline of Phi Gamma Delta and play an important role in the Fraternity’s and individual chapter’s success. Brothers in these roles have a tremendous impact on the lives of our undergraduate members, providing mentorship and ensuring there is proper support and guidance provided to the men in each chapter.

• Section Leader (SL): SLs serve as Appointed Volunteer Leaders of the Fraternity, approved by the Archons. The main responsibility is to identify, recruit and support graduate volunteers for each chapter in his section to ensure continued success.

• Purple Legionnaire (PL): PLs serve as the primary advisor to each chapter and monitor chapter efficiency, providing guidance, support and counsel where needed.

• Board of Chapter Advisors (BCA): BCA members serve as specialized advisors for certain areas of operation and work directly with officers/chairmen of the undergraduate chapter. They provide counsel on various areas of operation, such as positions related to the New Model (Foundations of Courage/Member Onboarding, Built to Lead/Member Development, and Recruitment) or other chapter operations, including finances, graduate relations, public relations, etc.

• House Corporation (HC): HCs typically own and/or operate undergraduate chapter house facilities and seek to provide safe, comfortable and competitive housing for the chapter it supports. HC members come from a variety of occupations/professions to oversee the corporation's finances, insurance coverage, repairs and overall business operations of the facility.

Spotlight on 18 Graduate Brothers 48-Years-Old or Younger Wesley Bolsen (RoseHulman 2000)

Wes Bolsen has a B.S. in electrical engineering and a minor in economics from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. He currently serves as the Chief Business Officer for Noon Energy. Previously, he has served as the Chief Business Officer and CCO of his previous two companies while keeping his executive office on the south side of Denver, Colorado, and travelling around the world. He has also helped build the world's leading wildfire prevention technology, which he sold to Perimeter Solutions, and became the Global Business Director for Wildfire Prevention & Protection as they went public on the New York Stock Exchange. Wes also built four different renewable fuel, ag technology and animal nutrition companies, including Codexis, where he served as an officer. From 2000-06 he worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Co. Additionally, in 2011, Wes was named the top Chief Marketing Officer in the United States.

Kevin Booth (Bowling Green 2003)

Kevin Booth knew early on he wanted to be a computer scientist.

Throughout high school, in his hometown of Orrville, Ohio, he learned everything he could about computer programming in between sports and working as a fryer cook.

Kevin graduated with a degree in computer science in fall 2004 and continued to attend graduate school to pursue

a M.S. in computer science, which he achieved in 2006.

After graduate school, Kevin moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he started his first job as a computer scientist.

Kevin’s career has allowed him to create software and cloud-based solutions for almost 100 companies over the last 20 years, most of which are Fortune 500. He has also written software for companies like Safelite Autoglass, Humana, Nationwide and Progressive, as well as government agencies and schools. Currently, Kevin serves as the Principal Architect for Insight Enterprises, a global technology company that focuses on business-to-business and information technology capabilities for enterprises.

Nick DePorter (Arizona State 1999)

Nick DePorter has professional experience in government affairs, higher education leadership and workforce development. Currently, Nick is the Senior Lead Manager of U.S. Public Policy & Economic Graph at LinkedIn. He is responsible for partnering with policymakers and community stakeholders to create economic opportunity for every member of the workforce. Nick served as an elected council member for Fountain Hills, Arizona, from 2014-18. He served on the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) Board of Directors, Maricopa County Workforce Development Board, the Chicanos Por La Causa - Integrated Health & Human Services Board and the Arizona State University Career & Professional Development Services Advisory Board. He also serves as a board member for the City of Phoenix Business & Workforce Development Board and the Arizona State University School of Politics & Global Studies. Bill Gilbert graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Idaho in 1996 with a B.S. in finance. He is currently the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Caprock, a multi-family office investment firm that advises on a significant amount of client assets. Caprock has offices in seven cities across the U.S. and is headquartered in Boise, Idaho. In 2021, Bill was appointed to the Idaho State Board of Education and is currently Vice President of the Board. He has also served as a director of multiple private companies such as VisitPay and Pets Best Insurance Services, LLC. And he serves on the Board of Directors of Idaho Business for Education. Previously, he served the University of Idaho Foundation as Chairman and Emeritus Director of the Board, and he was the Chairman of the St. Luke’s Health Foundation. In 2019, Idaho Governor Brad Little invited Bill to serve as the Co-Chairman of the “Our Kids, Idaho’s Future” K-12 Education Task Force. Bill and his wife, Melissa, reside in Boise and have four children.

Gabriel Hesse (Montana 2002)

Gabe Hesse is an innovative and accomplished product and technology leader. He currently serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Net Health, where he oversees the development and delivery of their products. In senior leadership roles, Gabe has helped create multiple product categories and scaled technology businesses, which has led to several successful company exits, including an initial public offering.

Gabe’s previous positions include CTO at Arrive Health, CTO at Havenly, Senior VP of Engineering & Architecture at Welltok and Chief Architect at Bankrate. Ron was one of the first employees at Sandstorm Gold Royalties, leading a start-up mining company to become a globally recognized precious metals royalty company. Sandstorm provides funding for mining companies worldwide, providing growth capital to construct mines, expand operations and acquire assets. Since the company's inception, Ron has been on the executive team as one of the leaders of the corporate development and finance functions, focusing on structuring transactions for Sandstorm's new and existing partners. Outside of the office, Ron also has his hands full with his daughter and twin boys, all under the age of three.

Ryan Irvine (Georgia 2004) Ryan Irvine is the Senior Vice President for Coldwell Banker Richard Ellis, one of the world's largest commercial real estate services and investment firms. Ryan leads a three-person team representing corporate occupiers in all facets of the commercial real estate business both in Atlanta and across North America. In the last six years, Ryan has been in the top 20% of sales professionals at the company twice. He started his career at C&W in 2004, and he left in 2008 to start his own team at Coldwell Banker Richard Ellis. Ryan and his wife, Ashley, have three daughters (aged six, nine and 12). The kids celebrated at TBPP have overwhelmed Wade by how transformative a simple act of kindness can be to a kid going through hard times. Before joining TBPP, Wade held leadership roles at Goldman Sachs, the White House and USAID, where he developed and executed strategic partnerships, community development, and civic engagement initiatives. Wade is also a 2022 Presidential Leadership Scholar, a fellowship program fostering collaboration and leadership skills among diverse and accomplished professionals across all sectors.

Dr. David Rapp (Virginia 1996)

David Rapp is the Executive Director and Founder of Global Surgical Expedition (GSE), a nonprofit organization delivering surgical care and infrastructure to underserved populations around the world. GSE has treated over 1,500 patients and performed over 500 life-changing surgeries in Central America and Africa. David has a long-standing commitment to global surgery care and helping the five billion people worldwide lacking access to basic surgeries. He is a professor of urology and professor of obstetrics & gynecology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

And he is the director of the UVA urology global health leadership track, a two-year certificate program for residents focused on global health leadership. David is also an active researcher and has published more than 125 scientific articles and chapters, with significant focus on global surgery and the relationship between surgical disease and poverty. Additionally, he is a member of the G4 Alliance Permanent Council, a global group of more than 60 organizations across 160 countries, united in its efforts to advocate for access to surgical, obstetric, trauma and anesthesia care.

Ramin Taheri (Maryland 1997)

His experience covers a range of complex legal and policy issues in education and civil rights. Ramin earned a B.A. from the University of Maryland, a M.A. from Columbia University’s Teachers College and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law. He lives in Washington, DC, with his wife and two children.

Andrew Townend (Texas Tech 2000)

Andrew Townend is an experienced CFO with global finance, strategy and corporate development expertise. Andrew graduated summa cum laude from Texas Tech University in 2000 with a finance major and German minor. He earned his MBA in economics and finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 2005. He started his career at J.P. Morgan Chase, working as a senior analyst from 2000-03. From 2005-10 he held several positions at Boston Consulting Group; from 2011-18 he served in several prominent roles at PepsiCo, including CFO of PepsiCo Australia & New Zealand, and from 2018-20 he was Group CFO of Real Pet Food Company. Currently, Andrew is CFO of Custom Ink, the eCommerce and omnichannel leader in custom gear for groups, companies and communities.

James Walker (California State Northridge 2001)

James Walker graduated with a B.A. in business law. After a short career in financial services, he transitioned into the world of entertainment.

James also cowrote and produced "Why We Ride," a feature documentary exploring the passion for life told through the lives of motorcycle enthusiasts. This film achieved resounding critical acclaim and garnered James numerous accolades, including the 2014 Motorcyclist of the Year Award and the Hazel Kolb Brighter Image Award – both from the American Motorcycle Association. The California State Assembly also recognized James with a special commendation for the profound positive impact of the film. In the wake of his success with "Why We Ride," he co-founded MOTOvational, Inc., a federally registered 501(c)3 charity that has raised over $100,000 for pediatric brain tumor research and support through yearly motorcycle rides.

Dr. Bryan Zugelder

(Central Florida 1999) Bryan Zugelder is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs & Partnerships at James Madison University and a tenured associate professor in the department of learning, technology & leadership education. He has more than 60 scholarly contributions in the field of education. This includes funded grants, peer-reviewed journal and book publications, national and international presentations, and creative activities, all focused on the educator continuum. He led the development of a comprehensive logic model for research in collaboration with the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning & Equity and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at North Carolina State University. He was the lead author for an instructional coaching framework used across 10 universities in the University of North Carolina system and more than 200 schools to provide intentional coaching support to beginning teachers. He has also served as Executive Director of Undergraduate Affairs & Partnerships, Director of Clinical Experiences, and Director of the Toni Jennings Exceptional Education Institute at the University of Central Florida. And he provided state-level instructional coaching for principals and literacy coaches in Reading First schools and served as an assessment project manager for the Florida Department of Education. Foundation Focus Overcoming Obstacles - The Persistence Scholarship The Persistence Scholarship is awarded by the Phi Gamma Delta Educational Foundation and recognizes the importance we have placed on a determination to “press on” and accomplish important goals while overcoming obstacles. The Persistence Scholarship provides financial assistance to brothers who strive for excellence in academics, fraternity and campus leadership, and service to their chapter and community while dealing with the

Testing Points, Courageous Leaders & The Leadership Institute How do you know when your values are being tested? And how do you respond? How do you lead your chapter to be courageous and live the values of Phi Gamma Delta?

Building Courageous Leaders means that our brothers will understand and embrace the values of Phi Gamma Delta; recognize when those values are being challenged and understand the implications of a particular choice; and at that testing point, know how to confront and lead others in an ethical, productive way.

The Leadership Institute is designed to help brothers become values-based, courageous leaders. Each chapter is asked to send at least one brother to the Institute. The

James W. Grantman (Arizona 1948) (right) always looked for an opportunity to help. There were three different ways that Jim was asked to give to Phi Gamma Delta: annually to the Perge! Society, to the Foundation's program funds and through his estate. Each time, he responded with an immediate "Yes!" You see, Jim believed in what the Fraternity can do for young men – the experiences and the growth during formative years of their lives. He also completely understood that young men can and will make mistakes. "That is how they learn," he once said. He always ended his calls or letters with, "Keep up the good work." To Jim, we say, "We will keep up the good work, and thank you for being such a good friend to Phi Gamma Delta."

Foundation Board & Staff Updates Kirk D. Walden's (Texas Arlington 1972) business career spans decades in high-tech marketing. Kirk’s experience ranges from start-ups to multinationals, from back-room advisor to frontline spokesperson, and from strategy and research to advertising and public relations. His background includes senior positions at worldwide advertising agencies Ogilvy & Mather and Foote Cone & Belding, and global accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, plus years as an independent consultant. He also has served the Fraternity in various capacities for years as Section Leader. He was awarded the William A. Martin III Distinguished Fiji Award.

A. Peter Rimsans II (Iowa State 1993) works as a strategy consultant specializing in workforce development, infrastructure investment and public affairs. He served as the executive director for Indiana State Building and Construction Trades Council, acting as the chief spokesperson, strategist and lobbyist for the

75,000 members of Indiana’s Building Trades Unions. His involvement in the Fraternity includes serving as Section Leader and as Parliamentarian at several Ekklesiai.

We are excited to introduce Dionysis Protopapadakis (Appalachian State 2017) as the newest addition to our Educational Foundation team.

Dio will be assisting in donor stewardship and outreach, scholarships, and communications. He previously served the Fraternity as a Field Secretary and as Director of Graduate Engagement. He will now also work with the Educational Foundation, thus expanding his role as Senior Director of Graduate Engagement. Dio can assist you in furthering your Phi Gam experience, so that it continues to be valuable to you.

Kevin Haga (Jacksonville 1992) recently finished his second fouryear term on the Board. His last role on the Board was serving as treasurer. We thank Kevin for his years of dedicated service.

Celebrating 100 years in Canada: Supporting Education Through the Foundation Several brothers had a vision back in the late 1980s to create the Phi Gamma Delta Foundation of Canada.

By 1990 the visionary group created the Foundation to serve our members and chapters residing in Canada.

The Foundation’s mission is to provide scholarships to students, reward strong academics and campus involvement, and provide educational programming and housing for needy students. Since those humble beginnings, the Foundation now annually awards over $60,000 in scholarships.

Those visionaries included Gordon Elliott (British Columbia 1955), R. Dee Pollock (Oregon 1964) and Douglas W. Miller (British Columbia 1950). 2023 William A. Martin III Distinguished Fiji Award

The Archons established the Distinguished Fiji Award in 1964. It is presented annually to no more than six graduate brothers who shall be deserving of recognition for their faithful and unselfish service to Phi Gamma Delta or their special contribution to mankind and society at large. The award was renamed the William A. Martin III Distinguished Fiji Award in 2019, upon Bill's retirement as Executive Director. To date, 478 Phi Gams have been honored with the Distinguished Fiji Award.

Henry J. Fitzgerald (WPI 1975)

Brother Fitzgerald has been involved for almost 50 years in the F.A. Morse Association, the house corporation for the Pi Iota Chapter at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Most recently he served as President of the Association, managing the project to build a new $6.1 million chapter house from design development to finished construction. In recognition of the indispensable role he played, the 14,500-square-foot house is named the Henry J. Fitzgerald Chapter House. He has served his alma mater on the Board of Trustees from 2012-22 and on the Dean’s Council of Strategic Advisors in the School of Business. The WPI Alumni Association awarded him its Herbert F. Taylor Award for Distinguished Service to WPI. In his hometown of Shrewsbury, MA, he served as Chair of the Board of Selectmen from

2011-17 and served on the School Building Committee for over 20 years. Henry spent most of his professional career with Genzyme Corporation as it grew from startup in the early 1980s to the world’s third-largest biotechnology company. He retired as Vice President of Operations and Planning.

Kevin F. Mitchelson (Kansas 1979)

Brother Mitchelson is recognized for his service to Phi Gamma Delta, his community, his state, and the legal profession. He was House Corporation Treasurer for the Pi Deuteron Chapter at Kansas for 16 years (1980-96) and more recently co-chaired the capital campaign for a major renovation of the chapter house.

He served the International Fraternity from 2008-14 as General Counsel, providing legal guidance to the Archons, staff, chapters, and graduate

volunteers, and as Archon Secretary from 2014-18. He currently represents Phi Gamma Delta on the board of directors of the Fraternity Sorority PAC. Kevin is a partner in the law firm of Wheeler & Mitchelson in Pittsburg, KS. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Kansas Bar Foundation and from 2005-17 served on the Kansas Board of Law Examiners. He chaired the Kansas Highway Advisory Commission from 2000-05. His volunteer work with the Boy Scouts has spanned 38 years and every level of Scouting from a local troop to the National Council.

Among many honors recognizing his contributions to Scouting are 10 international awards, including the Youth of the Americas Award in 2016 and the Bronze Wolf Award from the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 2019. Graduating from Emory University School of Medicine in 1971, Charlie served as a Navy Flight Surgeon before returning to his hometown of Valdosta, GA, to practice primary care medicine. Called to active duty in 1991, he remained in the Navy thereafter. His career culminated with a three-year stint as Commanding Officer of all naval health clinics. He received two Legion of Merit awards, three Meritorious Service Medals and the Marine Corps Commendation Medal. In 2007 he retired from military service and moved to Dallas, TX. He earned a master’s in theological studies from the Perkins School of Theology at SMU and was the founder and president of Compassionate DFW, which fosters compassionate action in the DFW Metroplex. He served on the Board of Chapter Advisors at the University of Texas Dallas from 2010-2019 and was named a Distinguished Fiji in 2017.

Dave served from 19841990 as an Archon of the Fraternity, the final two years as Archon President.

He previously served on the Fraternity’s Board of Trustees from 1982-1984.

He held a law degree from Indiana University and a CPA license but spent most of his career as an entrepreneur with interests in sports, tourism, real estate, and life insurance. In the early 1980s, he was a pioneer in taking tourism into the Soviet Union and China. His travel company, First Family of Travel, coordinated all tourism and ticketing packages for the Olympics. He founded the Elmore Sports Group, a conglomerate of five Minor League Baseball teams, two professional hockey teams, and concessions operators. Dave served on the board of trustees of Minor League Baseball and the executive committee of the Pacific Coast League. He was inducted into the hall of fame of both the Pacific Coast League (2014) and the Texas League (2016) and in 2016 was named King of Baseball by Minor League Baseball for his longtime dedication and service to professional baseball. Indiana University honored him with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2009 and the Bicentennial Medal in 2019. His legacies in Phi Gamma Delta include sons D.G. (SMU 1980) and Doug (Indiana 1984) and grandsons Carson Elmore (Georgia 2014) and Scott Elmore (Villanova 2015). He was named a Distinguished Fiji in 1991.

[Ad Astra] Howard M. Logan (Iowa State 1946)

passed ad astra on August 14, 2023. A U.S. Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean conflict, Howard returned to his hometown of Moville, IA, after World War II to work with his father at First Trust and Savings Bank, eventually becoming president and chairman of the board. He served as mayor of Moville and president of the Chamber of Commerce and was a director of the Iowa Bankers Association.

He served his alma mater as a member of the Business Advisory Council, chairman of the Alumni Achievement Fund, and vice president and treasurer of Iowa State Gateway Center, Ltd. and was honored with the Alumni Achievement Award. He was a loyal supporter of the Alpha Iota Chapter and was the sire of Fiji son Chuck Logan (Iowa State 1974). He was named a Distinguished Fiji in 1987.

Marlis E. Smith (Texas Tech 1954)

passed ad astra on September 10, 2023. He served the Fraternity on the Board of Trustees from 1986-1992, the final four years as President, and as house corporation president at Colorado School of Mines. After graduating from Texas Tech with a degree in petroleum geology, Marlis served in the U.S. Air Force, leaving the service with the rank of captain.

Moving to Denver, he worked as a geologist for Amoco and then as chief geologist for Davis Oil Company. In 1980 he founded Four-Ten Exploration, an oil and gas exploration partnership, and continued in the oil and gas industry for the remainder of his career. Among his volunteer activities, he was a trustee of the Texas Tech Foundation, the Denver Symphony, and the Santa Fe Opera. He was the sire of Fiji sons Marlis, Jr. (Colorado School of Mines Grad Initiate) and Tim (Colorado College 1989). t

In Phi Gamma Delta, we believe in Friendship and state it as one of our core values. To us, however, Friendship means much more than “the state of being friends” as defined by Merriam Webster. Friendship is the foundation for everything that is done and accomplished in a fraternity chapter.

That foundation – the strong bond of brotherhood – is built upon three things: compatibility, vulnerability and accountability.

Compatibility is often determined in recruitment and focuses on our ability to get along with one another – to be friends. Vulnerability is achieved over time and means that we are there to help one another and are willing to share our problems. Accountability means we enforce a healthy discipline on one another – expecting each other to meet our obligations of membership,

I saw brothers take charge during a health scare for another, putting aside everything else in front of them to prioritize his safety and well-being.

I was reminded of a brother who, many years ago, faced the unimaginable – his father had committed suicide.

His chapter brothers rallied around him (as did many more from outside of his chapter as his story spread) to help him not only get through one of the hardest times of his life but stay in school and graduate with his degree.

We all have our stories and memories.

Whether it’s a job loss or promotion, the birth of a child or the sudden loss of a family member, celebrating a marriage or coping with divorce. A real impact of fraternity is knowing that our brothers are there for us on our very best days, and our very worst.t
