Brotha Badd-Guyy & Brotha Vintage
It was my first semester attending what would become an overnight powerhouse in the ACC. Florida State University, is the home and alma mater of many talented individuals, including yours truly.
Among the 32,000+ in attendance is an ambitious young man who’s taking Vintage Fashion, Modeling and merchandising to the next level. Tyler Palmer or as we here at Industry Shakedown call him “Brotha Vintage,” is a rising star in the Vintage Fashion scene His ascend is rapid and fastpaced. Oh and not to mention, he’s one of the top dawgs, representing the 305.
I first met him at my very first market place Wednesday (think of it as Chicken Wednesday at Alcorn). The vibe that accompanied him was rock solid We chatted for a little bit, I copped some of his merch, and before you knew it, he was my very first subject in my very first documentary. From there, we developed a friendship that is ironclad, 3 years later.
Yo, Brotha Vintage, when you read this edition at its release, I want you to know that you are my Brotha and whatever you want or need in this life, and because you always had my back, you just name it my friend

From Miami To Tally
Tyler Palmer, a dedicated vintage fashion collector based in Miami, FL, had always found solace in the timeless charm of bygone eras. His passion for retro garments began during his college days at Florida State University, where he immersed himself in the vibrant culture of Tallahassee. As the sun cast its warm glow over the Legacy Walk, Tyler’s enthusiasm for vintage fashion became palpable once more.
Market Place Wednesday at FSU was a bustling, colorful event that breathed life into the campus's Legacy Walk. This weekly market was a cherished tradition, where vendors from across the state set up their stalls in hopes of expanding their business and connecting with the student community. On this particular Wednesday, the atmosphere was electric, as if the air itself was charged with entrepreneurial spirit.
Tyler Palmer, dressed in a retro patterned blazer and highwaisted trousers, was a striking figure among the crowd. His booth was adorned with an eclectic mix of vintage pieces—each garment carefully curated to reflect the flair of a bygone era. The racks displayed everything from 1970s bell-bottom jeans to 1980s neon windbreakers, each item telling a story of its own.
As I approached Tyler's booth, he greeted me with a warm smile. “Welcome! Feel free to browse,” he said, his enthusiasm evident. The vintage clothing around him was more than just merchandise; it was a labor of love, a manifestation of his passion.
Market Place Wednesday was a sight to behold. Vendors from all walks of life had set up shop, their tables laden with an array of goods from handmade jewelry to artisanal food products. The Legacy Walk was transformed into a vibrant tapestry of commerce and creativity. The air was filled with the buzz of conversation, the clinking of coffee cups, and the occasional burst of laughter.
Tyler’s stall stood out, not just because of the colorful array of vintage apparel but also because of his engaging approach to customers. “I love this market because it gives me the chance to share my passion with others,” Tyler said, adjusting a vintage leather jacket on a nearby rack. “Every piece has its own history, and it’s incredible to see people appreciate that.”
As I wandered through the market, I noticed the varied reactions from the crowd. Some students were intrigued by the retro styles, while others admired the craftsmanship of the pieces. Tyler’s booth was particularly popular among those with an eye for unique fashion. His collection had an almost magnetic pull, drawing people in with its blend of nostalgia and artistry.
Tyler’s commitment to vintage fashion was evident in every aspect of his presentation. He had a keen eye for quality and detail, and it showed in the carefully selected items on display. “The joy of vintage is that it’s sustainable and timeless,” Tyler explained. “You’re not just buying a piece of clothing; you’re buying a piece of history.”

This article addresses sensitive and controversial issues within the Black community, including topics that may provoke strong emotions or differing opinions. The intent is to engage in honest, critical discussions and hold space for accountability and growth. We encourage readers to approach the content with an open mind and a respectful attitude towards diverse perspectives. The " us against them" dynamic within the Black community is a complex and toxic mindset that often pits different groups against each other, creating internal divisions that hinder collective progress. This mentality can manifest in various forms, such as colorism, classism, and differences in educational or socioeconomic status, where individuals or subgroups feel alienated or superior to others within their own community Instead of fostering unity, this mindset fuels competition, resentment, and distrust among Black people.
Colorism, for instance, can create divides based on skin tone, leading to preferential treatment of lighter-skinned individuals while darkerskinned people face discrimination even within their own community. Similarly, classism can create tension between those who have “made it” and those who are still struggling, leading to judgment and lack of support
This division often distracts from the larger issues of systemic racism and inequality, as the community becomes internally focused on its conflicts rather than addressing external challenges. It can perpetuate negative stereotypes, discourage solidarity, and undermine efforts for social and economic advancement. To combat this toxic dynamic, it is crucial to promote self-love, empathy, and community support, recognizing that the true " us against them" should focus on combating external oppression rather than tearing each other down.
Us Against Them Mentality
Materialism is a HUGE Contributor
Materialism has significantly impacted the Black community, often undermining cultural values, self-worth, and economic stability. Rooted in systemic racism and consumer culture, materialism has encouraged the pursuit of status and validation through material possessions, such as luxury brands, cars, and expensive jewelry. This focus on outward displays of wealth can perpetuate financial strain, as many prioritize these symbols of success over long-term financial security, like saving, investing, or homeownership.
Furthermore, materialism can shift focus away from collective community progress and cultural pride, replacing them with individualistic goals that often align with societal pressures. It promotes a cycle of consumer debt and economic disadvantage, especially when access to financial education and generational wealth is limited. Additionally, materialism feeds into negative stereotypes that depict Black success solely through material acquisition, neglecting the rich heritage of creativity, resilience, and innovation within the community.
This preoccupation with material wealth can overshadow more profound social issues like educational advancement, community building, and mental health. Addressing materialism involves reclaiming cultural values that prioritize self-worth, community upliftment, and financial literacy over superficial measures of success, fostering a healthier and more sustainable path forward for the Black community.
THESE STUPID ASS PODCAST
Love and relationship podcasts have gained popularity within the Black community, but they often contribute to division by promoting contentious narratives and reinforcing gender stereotypes Top podcasters like Kevin Samuels (posthumously influential), Ace Metaphor, Derrick Jaxn, and Kendra G are known for their differing views on dating, marriage, and gender roles. These platforms often highlight conflicts between Black men and women, emphasizing topics like high-value partners, submission, and infidelity.
The divide emerges as podcasters and their audiences frequently engage in debates that pit genders against each other, rather than fostering healthy dialogue and mutual understanding This polarization can create unrealistic expectations and perpetuate negative stereotypes, leaving listeners feeling misunderstood or resentful. The sensationalist nature of these podcasts prioritizes drama over constructive conversations, often overshadowing the need for healing, unity, and cooperative growth within the Black community.
Instead of promoting solutions, many of these platforms capitalize on pain points, further entrenching divides and hindering progress in Black love and relationships.

The “City Girl” mentality, popularized by music and social media, reflects a lifestyle that emphasizes independence, luxury, and prioritizing financial gain from men over traditional relationships. Rooted in a rejection of societal norms, this mindset is often celebrated for promoting women ’ s autonomy and financial empowerment. However, it can also be seen as contributing to the degradation of the Black community by glorifying materialism, transactional relationships, and a lack of commitment.
This mentality often encourages short-term gratification over long-term stability, perpetuating stereotypes about Black women as overly aggressive, untrustworthy, or only interested in men for money. This not only undermines the potential for healthy, mutually respectful relationships but also fuels divisive gender dynamics within the community. The “City Girl” ethos prioritizes self-interest and instant pleasure over collective growth and responsibility, thereby eroding the social fabric that traditionally values family, unity, and support within the Black community.

MACULINITY AND FEMINIMITY DISCUSSION! This Shit Needs To STOP
The ongoing discussion of masculinity and femininity within the Black community has increasingly devolved into toxic rhetoric that harms relationships and perpetuates stereotypes. The pressure to conform to rigid gender norms often stifles individuality, leading to emotional suppression among men and unrealistic expectations for women. This binary framing reduces the rich spectrum of Black identity to narrow definitions, fostering hostility rather than understanding. As a result, many individuals feel alienated, struggling to navigate their identities in a society that values conformity over authenticity. The relentless scrutiny of how Black men and women should behave only deepens divisions and hampers community cohesion.
“GOT TO DO BETTER AS A RACE. TURN OFF THESE RIDICULOUS ASS THINK PIECES AND START TO LOVE ANOTHER ” - SK-W
Moreover, the focus on traditional gender roles distracts from pressing social issues that the Black community faces, such as systemic racism, economic disparity, and mental health challenges. By fixating on who embodies masculinity or femininity, we ignore the intersections of these identities with broader societal struggles. This distraction not only perpetuates internal conflict but also diverts energy away from collective empowerment and progress. It is essential to shift the conversation toward celebrating diversity in gender expression and fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals feel valued. Ending the toxic masculinity and femininity discourse will pave the way for healthier relationships and a more united community, allowing everyone to thrive without the constraints of outdated norms.
Infintite Problems
In The Black Community
How To Solve These Problems?
Unifying the Black community requires a commitment to open dialogue that transcends traditional gender norms. Creating safe spaces for honest conversations allows both men and women to express their experiences and challenges without fear of judgment. By engaging in community forums, workshops, and support groups, individuals can build mutual understanding and respect. Emphasizing shared goals, such as economic empowerment and social justice, can strengthen collective identity and collaboration. Removing distractions like social media and celebrity influence helps refocus attention on grassroots initiatives and real-life connections, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.
Additionally, prioritizing personal relationships over external validation is essential for true unity. Encouraging mentorship programs and collaborative projects between men and women can bridge gaps and foster interdependence. By celebrating individual contributions while reinforcing the idea that everyone plays a role in the community’s success, we cultivate a more cohesive environment. Turning off podcasts that perpetuate divisive narratives can further encourage critical thinking and deeper connections. Ultimately, unifying the Black community hinges on shared values, mutual support, and a collective vision for a more equitable future, allowing for a thriving environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute.

So, it’s the Fall Semester of 2023 at Florida State University It was Dr Katherine Dale’s Social Media Campaigns Graduate Course I’m sitting in the Back with my good friend Zach Weinicki On the other side of the class is Frank Nunez Annalisa Tibbetts and Kate Novak In my vicinity is Quin McKay Now I had seen Sakari Baker enter class and I was infatuated with how smart she was I mean outright running the class discussions I loved how unapologetic she was and her natural energy and charism had Shane-O at hey thick mamas how you doin?
One day during that semester (I ll never forget it) she walks in wearing this snug fit light blue outfit and had blonde hair. It mixed with her chocolate skin so perfectly. I let out a clearly audible DAMN! She looks my way smirks, and then chuckles I said to myself why is she so damn fine!? I then find out she attended Alabama State University Uh-oh, that s an issue cause my Alma Mater is Alcorn State University Why is this so important? Well, two reasons 1 Both Schools are in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) 2 We share the same initials ASU So as bait to get her to notice me a bit more, I wore my waterproof Alcorn hoodie IT WORKED! I said oh yeah, I can kind of approach her sexy ass It kind of started a friendship that last to this day
So, yeah Thick Mamas, Shane-O was plotting This is my confession in this article I ve been Cruuuushing ever since, and I don t hide it all It has been an honor getting to see you rise in the ranks, an honor to be a fellow FSU alum and an honor covering you and your rise in ISD Magazine You forever have my heart, and nothing will change that Believe Shane-O on that!

THICK MAMAS TAKES ON NYFW!
“If there is anyone in this universe that has a total ‘it’ factor, without a shadow of a doubt, it’s Sakari Baker.”SK-W
DEFINE NYFW!
New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is a semi-annual event showcasing the latest in fashion trends, typically held in February and September. It features a series of runway shows, presentations, and exhibitions from top designers and emerging talent, attracting industry professionals, influencers, and media from around the globe. NYFW serves as a platform for creativity and innovation, influencing global fashion trends and consumer tastes. The event is not only a highlight for designers but also a cultural phenomenon, blending fashion with art, music, and social commentary, making it a key fixture in the fashion calendar.
In the midst of the fashion madness is 26-year-old Sakari Baker. She is an alum of Alabama State University and a recent graduate of Florida State University. As of this writing she has obtained both a bachelors degree (ASU) and a Master’s degree (FSU). Having gained modeling experience through the ASU Modeling Troupe “Elite,” she brings her expertise to the Big Apple.
“You know at every HBCU you have to ‘cross’ something,” she told Industry Shakedown. “Well, I crossed Elite a modeling troupe and started doing my thing there.” With the previous guidance through the troupe, New York didn’t seem like much of challenge for our subject.
“New York was cool. All I did was the show. I walked on the runway. Models have to send their headshots beforehand and their selected. Then the designers are selected after that.”
BOUT THEM RACKS
Sakari is not only a model, but she’s a rapper and a mother as well.
Over the closing days of the Summer, Sakari released a track that is a certified banger in the state of Florida and is being meticulously spread throughout the South. “Bout Some Racks,” is a grove that incites a turn up, a sprinkle of gangsta shit, and some good ole ass shaking. As for how she got her start in music, well it just sort of happened
“Well, I found the beat on Youtube,” she said. “I used to write poetry and one day we just went to the studio and the producer was like, y’all should come back.” And went back she did. With the instrumental from YouTube, she delivers a new dimension to female rap. Its gritty, unapologetic tone gives listeners an insight to what some women want and sometimes demand
BALANCE
As we already mentioned, Sakari isn’t just a rapper, model and podcaster (oh yeah she has a well-received podcast entitled BIAS [Bitch I Ain’t Sorry]), she’s also a boy-mom She stated that balancing everything with motherhood becomes second nature after a while “I just do it ” she told Industry Shakedown “My father is my number one supporter Kane (her son) loves his grandad ”
An artists through and through, Baker’s talents aren’t just limited to just rhyming, walking or parenting She’s what we at ISD call a ‘cheat code ’ “I am a very artistic person, drawing, painting, poetry ” she said “Rapping was on some play-play shit Agaung, we just got in the booth and just went ”
Sakari Baker exemplifies the essence of a multifaceted artist, seamlessly blending her talents in rap, modeling, painting, drawing, and poetry Her creativity transcends boundaries, inspiring others to embrace their artistic journeys As she continues to innovate, Sakari leaves an indelible mark on the world of art
