As 2024 enters our deep rearview at the time of release, it’s a moment to reflect on a year marked by transformation, resilience, and remarkable innovation From political shifts to groundbreaking technological advancements, this year has been defined by rapid change and the world’s ongoing efforts to adapt to a new normal The global stage has seen pivotal moments, with the continued evolution of climate action, an evolving geopolitical landscape, and advancements in the realms of AI, space exploration, and renewable energy.

Yet, amidst all this progress, 2024 has also highlighted the complexities of our interconnected world whether through economic uncertainty, the acceleration of societal debates, or the fight for equity and justice in communities around the globe From the rise of new social movements to the steady march of environmental consciousness, the narrative of the year is one of both hope and challenge
In this year’s review, we take a closer look at the defining moments and trends that have shaped our time, offering a snapshot of how 2024 has transformed the way we work, live, and think It’s a year that will be remembered not only for its achievements but also for the hard questions it continues to pose as we move forward into 2025
However, 2024 was also a year of turbulence on a more personal and cultural level. From a female rap beef to a male rap beef, the music scene was both a reflection of and a catalyst for deeper social conversations. The political chaos in the United States continued, marked by a divisive election cycle that left the country reeling And perhaps most controversially, the justified assassination of a CEO stirred debate on power dynamics and morality in the modern world In all, 2024 will go down as a year of seismic shifts, conflict, and unsettling questions, making it, well, the second-worst year of the decade.
The Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion beef emerged in 2024 after tensions between the two rappers escalated over perceived industry slights and personal disagreements. While both initially seemed to support each other, with Megan featuring on Nicki's songs, their relationship soured after a series of public incidents Nicki accused Megan of aligning with rival artists and disloyalty, while Megan fired back, claiming that Nicki had undermined her success The feud intensified through social media posts and cryptic comments in their songs, with fans fueling the drama This beef highlighted the complex dynamics within the rap industry's female artists.
The Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef reignited in 2024, fueled by growing tensions over competition and perceived disrespect The feud began years ago but flared up again when Drake made subtle diss tracks, seemingly targeting Kendrick's style and influence Kendrick, known for his introspective lyricism, responded with sharper, more pointed verses, challenging Drake’s dominance in hip-hop The media amplified the rivalry, with both artists throwing jabs on social platforms and in their music Fans passionately took sides, turning the dispute into one of rap's most publicized conflicts, centered around artistic authenticity, success, and hip-hop supremacy
The controversy surrounding the Super Bowl XLIX halftime performance choice stemmed from the selection of Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne, particularly since the 2025 Super Bowl will be in New Orleans, Wayne's hometown. Many fans and critics felt that choosing Kendrick, a California native, over the iconic New Orleans rapper was a snub. Lil Wayne, known for his deep connection to New Orleans and his immense influence on rap, was seen by many as a more fitting choice for a Super Bowl performance in his home city The backlash reflected regional pride and the desire for local representation at such a highprofile event.

The 2024 Super Bowl was a showdown for the ages, with the Kansas City Chiefs overcoming the San Francisco 49ers in a 31-27 thriller. The game saw highoctane offense and relentless defense, making it a must-watch from start to finish.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the MVP, playing with poise despite being pressured all night. He threw for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns on 24-of-36 passing, with a key 50-yard bomb to Tyreek Hill setting up a pivotal score Hill finished with 7 receptions for 121 yards and 1 touchdown Tight end Travis Kelce was also a standout, hauling in 6 catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.
On the other side, 49ers QB Brock Purdy showed incredible resilience despite the loss Purdy threw for 245 yards, completing 22 of 31 attempts, and added 2 touchdowns. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel was electric, catching 6 passes for 85 yards and scoring once.
Running back Christian McCaffrey had a strong outing with 90 total yards (55 rushing, 35 receiving) and a touchdown.

Drake Bell’s appearance on Quiet on Set, the gripping docuseries that delves into Hollywood's darker realities, was a pivotal moment in his public journey. In the episode, Bell bravely recounted his difficult years working at Nickelodeon, where he was thrust into the limelight as a star of Drake & Josh. The 2004 sexual assault case he filed against Nickelodeon and the show's producers has remained a significant part of his story, though the details were largely hidden from the public for years.
Bell alleged that several executives and producers at Nickelodeon subjected him to inappropriate behavior, including unwanted sexual advances and emotional manipulation. He described a toxic work environment where his concerns were ignored, and he was often forced into uncomfortable situations, with little to no recourse. Despite his growing fame, Bell said that speaking up came at a heavy cost, with his career stalling after he took legal action.
In Quiet on Set, Bell discussed how the assault and the aftermath impacted his mental health, as well as his complicated relationship with Hollywood. His case against Nickelodeon in 2004 was eventually settled, but it wasn’t until the docuseries that he felt comfortable sharing the full extent of his experience. The episode resonated deeply with viewers, shedding light on the exploitation faced by young stars and sparking wider conversations about abuse in the entertainment industry.

Country music’s gatekeeping reared its ugly head once again, and this time, it came for two Black artists daring to carve their space in the genre Beyoncé and Shaboozey, two undeniable talents who infused country with fresh energy, found themselves facing resistance not for a lack of skill, but for the audacity to exist in a space that still struggles with inclusion
Beyoncé’s foray into country with Cowboy Carter was met with skepticism and outright hostility from a vocal segment of country’s audience Many dismissed her efforts before even hearing a note, choosing instead to fixate on her decadeslong dominance in R&B as if genre fluidity weren’t a staple of country music’s biggest names The double standard was glaring artists like Taylor Swift and Darius Rucker have crossed over seamlessly, yet Beyoncé’s presence sparked outrage The animosity wasn’t about preserving “authenticity”; it was about control
Then there’s Shaboozey, whose viral hit A Bar Song (Tipsy) became an undeniable smash, bringing a fresh, hip-hop-infused country sound that resonated with millions. Yet, when the 2024 CMA nominations were announced, his name was nowhere to be found. A breakout artist with country’s hottest song of the summer? Completely snubbed. The message was loud and clear success alone doesn’t guarantee recognition if the industry refuses to see you.

Let’s be real: racism is a ghost that still lingers in the halls of country music, haunting Black artists who dare to step outside the lines drawn for them. Beyoncé and Shaboozey aren’t just facing criticism; they’re confronting an industry that still hasn’t made room for them. And if country music refuses to evolve, it risks losing the very soul it claims to protect.
