This is the problem: She has been divorced now for at least 20 years. After her divorce, she raised me and my brother getting little or no financial support from my dad. Two months ago when I visited her, there was some man sitting there – I guess it was a sorta date. My mother has a high paying professional job. She is VicePresident at one of the Ivy League universities. She has always been careful of the men and women in her circle. She taught her children to do the same – be watchful of the company you keep. I am bothered because the man trying to court my mother is strictly not of her type. In other words, he is not of her quality. Gwendolyn, please help me to understand why my mother is allowing this man of no quality to be in her acquaintance. Gloria
Dear Gloria: Twenty years is a long time to be a divorcee. I congratulate your mother for financially providing for you and your brother. Many women claim the title of ‘single mom’ but actually receive above adequate child support, or they are living on the system. She is to be commended for continuing her education and moving forward in her professional career. Let me tell you this: You need to visit your mother often even if she does not wish for you to do so. It is important for you and your brother to let your mother know she should not date this man. Your mother is older now and her dating offers may be few. After all, most good mothers spend their youth bringing up children. Men flirt with women who are completely out of their league because they are looking to be provided for. Your mother is possibly caught up in that lonely hearts club and not realizing her actions and the course of demise it could take. While women wait to meet the man of their dream, the man on their level of profession, reasoning often becomes unbalanced and --loneliness has no status.

EVERY REPUBLICAN IN CONGRESS FAILS AFRICAN AMERICANS The new NAACP Report Card for the first session of the 112th Congress is out and it shows that every graded Republican member of the House and Senate received an F on issues considered important to the nation’s oldest civil rights group. George Curry In the Senate, all 46 GOP senators received Fs from NAACP. Of those, 34 voted against the NAACP’s position every time, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and former presidential candidate John McCain. In the House, all 238 Republicans graded also received Fs. Although GOP House members have a reputation but being more conservative than their Senate colleagues, only 10 House Republicans voted against the NAACP every time. In stark contrast to Republicans, 47 Democrats in the Senate earned As, three received Bs, one got a D and none received an F. The two independents in the Senate, Connecticut’s Joe Lieberman and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, received a B and an A, respectively. In the House, all 238 Republicans graded earned an F. House Democrats voted like their counterparts in the Senate: 159 earned As, 22 got Bs, four earned Cs, one got a D and four received Fs. I have been studying NAACP legislative report cards for a couple of decades and I can’t remember a time when Republicans in Congress have been this solidified in their hostility towards civil rights. About eight years ago, Republican Congresswoman Mary S. Leach of Iowa earned a C. More recently a couple of Republicans have earned Ds as the rest flunked. In the session of Congress that lasted from Jan. 5, 2011 to Dec. 23, 2011, only one Republican - Senator Scott Brown (R-Mass.) - voted with the NAACP 40 percent of the time. The GOP’s so-called moderate senators - Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine - supported the NAACP 33 percent of the time. The NAACP graded members of Congress on votes taken on such issues as repealing funding for health care reform, judicial nominations, deep budget cuts, job creation
and criminal justice reform. This NAACP Report Card should put to rest the lie that there’s no difference between Democrats and Republicans. There is difference - a huge difference at that. Even the Black Republican alternatives are not viable alternatives. Congressman Tim Scott of South Carolina backed the NAACP only 5 percent of the time. The only other Black House Republican, Allen B. West, also earned an F, supporting the NAACP 25 percent of the time. It hasn’t always been this way. In fact, most Blacks voted Republican until switching to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dwight D. Eisenhower received 39 percent of the Black vote in 1956. In his close election with John F. Kennedy in 1960, Blacks gave Richard Nixon 32 percent of their vote. In the bygone years, the Republican Party had such moderates as New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, Mayor John Lindsey of New York City and Connecticut Sen. Lowell Weicker. It even had Black Republicans who fought for civil rights. But the GOP began the political equivalent of ethnic cleansing in 1964 with the nomination of Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, who made an open appeal to segregationists. Goldwater’s “Southern Strategy” went up with flames, with Blacks giving Lyndon Johnson 94 percent of their vote. Over the last half century, GOP moderates, such as former Secretary of State Colin Powell have either been pushed out of the party or marginalized. Moderates have been replaced by rabid Tea Party activists who have pushed an already conservative party to the extreme right. The voting records of Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress illustrate the gap in support of African-Americans in the two parties. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, earned an A on the NAACP Report Card (93 percent) as did Assistant Majority Leader Richard Durbin (100 percent). Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, got an F (zero percent support of the NAACP). So did Assistant Minority Leader John Kyl of Arizona (zero percent). DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI CITATION BESTOWED ON ATHLETE, BUSINESSMAN JAMES “JIM” THROWER WILL HOBDY
The Alumni Association of Texas A&M University-Commerce, Inc. and the University bestowed the Distinguished Alumni Citation award on Camden, Ark. native, three-sport athlete at East Texas State University and class of 1970 graduate James “Jim” Thrower. Thrower participated on the Lions’ football, basketball and track teams and holds a bachelor’s degree in English and physical education from the University. He would go on to spend five years playing defensive back in the NFL, playing two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and three with the Detroit Lions. The Alumni Association dates back to 1890 and serves former graduates of East Texas Normal College, East Texas State Normal College, East Texas State Teachers College, East Texas State College, East Texas State University and Texas A&M University-Commerce. The 2012 Alumni Awards Gala Recognition Dinner honoring the Gold Blazer and Distinguished Alumni Recipients was held April 20, in the Sam Rayburn Student Center. MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS The relationship between mothers and daughters is a special one. It is a relationship that creates a unique bond like none other. It is a relationship that spans back to the beginning of humankind and has lasted throughout the ages. As for me, I am blessed to be both a mother and a daughter. While both roles should receive much love and adoration, the role of mother deserves much honor because of the awesome responsibility it carries. The role of mother allows one the privilege to mold someone’s life. The month of May honors mothers with the celebration of Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day means more to me now than ever before. It is a time when my children celebrate my motherhood. It is also a time for me to honor the memories of my mother who passed away several years ago. Mama was a strong woman who was the mother of five daughters and seven sons (but that’s another topic). But, imagine raising five daughters. My sisters and I were each so different from one another, our likes and dislikes, personalities, even our heights. The youngest of the daughters, I was the tallest, shyest and often felt the most inadequate. However, mama treated each of us as if we were someone very special and cherished each of our relationships with her. She took the time to teach, train and gave each of us the best motherly advice that she could. Mama sometimes scolded us. She was very comical, though not always intentional, but her actions were always peppered with love. She reminded us girls that our behavior as well as our appearance should always be ladylike as well as respectful. Mama was a mother we could go to or call on in any situation and at any time. Mama enjoyed spending time with each of her daughters. Mama was dependable. She loved the Lord and her family very much. Today I am the mother of two daughters. Like my mother, I too have a special bond with each of my daughters. It is a bond that was created before each of their births. Also like my mother I’ve trained my daughters as best as I know how. I have depended on God for the rest. However, I’m still teaching and giving advice about life’s lessons. I also know each of their likes and dislikes and understand each of their personalities. I love being a mother and enjoy spending time with each of my daughters. We do the typical mother daughter things such as shopping, occasional visits to the spa and long talks which often includes talking about the scriptures. They come to me with all their concerns and prayer requests. I am their greatest supporter, listener and encourager. Like my mother, I will always have my daughters’ best interest at heart. I too love the Lord and my family very much. As we prepare to honor our mothers this Mother’s Day, let us remember that there is no secret to having a wonderful mother daughter relationship or mother son relationship for that matter. However, the key to all wonderful relationships is found in God’s word, which is no secret but is available to us all!

ADOLESCENT & LADIES SYMPOSIUM TO ADDRESS COMMUNITY ISSUES
RICHARDSON -- The Twenty-seventh Annual 2012 Adolescent and Ladies Symposium, a symposium addressing issues of today’s society from a Biblical perspective will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ on Greenville Avenue, 1013 South Greenville Avenue. The event is being sponsored by the Church of Christ on Greenville Avenue and its Ladies Bible Class. GARLAND- On May 5th the North Garland Baptist Fellowship church (NGBF) will be holding its 9th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at Firewheel Golf Park (Old Course)
in Garland. Proceeds from the event will benefit the youth of the church by providing scholarships. The tournament format is a four-member team scramble.

ously abandoned that goal. The Republican Party’s hostility to civil rights reminds me of a comment made by the father of former GOP Congressman J.C. Watts, an African-American from Oklahoma. (Matt 15:21-28) Jesus said Oh woman great is thy Faith. The woman did acknowledge her position as undeserving and without legal covenant rights to the children’s bread, yet she used the Lords on words concerning dogs as for further claim for healing. Even dogs have some rights-rights to the crumbs that the master throws away and would give to them. Children have enough bread to spare, so she claimed the scraps for her daughter and won her case. Christ could not turn down such faith based upon such claims. She never read the Torah. This gentile woman heard about and watched Jesus, He was her torah. Stop disqualifying God’s people for healing. Example: Through the Law no one should touch the dead. Through grace Jesus came to fulfill the Law. The sisters of Lazarus saw their brother raised from the dead even after he began to stink, yes the Law of Moses was broken for there prayers. Lazarus was raised from the dead by God’s grace according to the law he was not to be touch. (John 11:41-44) Law-demands and gives stress. Example: Through grace woman with the issue of blood was healed. (Mark 5:24-34). By the law if any man touches her they are unclean, because she is unclean according to (Leviticus 15:19-27). Verse (27)- and whosoever touched those things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe him in water, and be unclean until even. (Proverbs 31:30-31) Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feared the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. Grace-supplies and helps you flow and rest. With grace we step into supply. Let us labor for rest. Rest is the Holy Spirit lead activity. (Matt 11:28-30) Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. GREENVILLE- USAF veteran and community volunteer Cedric Dean, and candidate for Greenville City Council Place 6 seat says he is running in the city council race to preserve and improve North Greenville. Dean served in the United States Air Force, 75th Security Forces Squadron in operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He served in Iraq, Egypt and Turkey while in the USAF and is a recipient of the
Air Force Achievement Medal. Dean is an active volunteer in our city. He founded UBIA, which focuses on involving others in education, economics, and politics. Some of its goals include producing jobs, supporting youth and elderly, promoting safe and clean neighborhoods and teaching entrepreneurship. He also volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club. Dean started, and is the owner of Unity Sports, a Greenville

sports league. Unity Sports targets youth and adults and challenges them to excel. Unity Sports is a steadily growing and has plans for a recreation center in the future according to Dean. He and his wife, Takeva, were both born and raised in Greenville. The former high school sweethearts have been married 12 years and have three sons: Xavier, Andrew and Bryce. “I really want
to see downtown come alive, and more businesses in our district and in Greenville as a whole,” Dean says. His goals include bringing information to citizens about city laws, codes, and issues. “I want the City to show interest in place 6, as it does all other parts of Greenville. I will listen to and work with all of Place 6: to preserve our history and improve our neighborhoods. I am asking for the public’s vote,” Dean said.

Bobst (class of 1990), US District Judge for the Southern District of Texas, Brownsville Division, the Honorable Hilda G. Tagle (class of 1969). In 1995 Judge Tagle became the first Hispanic woman in Texas to hold the position of federal district judge. Nacogdoches surgeon Larry Walker (class of 1962) rounded out the group. After a knee injury in 1975, Thrower transitioned into Corporate America serving as a loan executive and as an assistant to the board chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), regional manager of public issues and planning at Michigan Consolidated Gas and director of community affairs at Stroh’s Brewery. He is currently serving on the City of Detroit Board of Water Commissioners and is president of Jamjomar, Inc. and owner of seven McDonald’s franchises in the Detroit metro area. He is also affiliated with several corporate and community groups, such as the Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. In his acceptance speech Thrower touched on the keys to success: Have a good GPS system he noted. The ‘G’ is
for giving back to your teammates, your community or your school. The ‘P’ is for having passion for what you do. “Life is too short to do what you don’t like doing,” he said. The ‘S’ is for sponsors. Seek out sponsors or mentors to help you achieve your idea of success. Asked if he could deliver one message to teenagers in Greenville and Commerce, Thrower
said, “Strive to be superior.” Then he concluded, “And, if you fail - you will be merely excellent.”

The Atrium at the Patty Granville Arts Center in uptown Garland provided the noon luncheon backdrop last month as Garland Fair Housing Services marked its 15th annual celebration. Garland’s push toward creating equal opportunity in every sector of its community reached the new milestone under challenging odds. April also marked the 44th anniversary since passage of the US Fair Housing Act. The City patterns its ordinance after the Act and provides a mechanism for citizens who believe
they have been discriminated against to file a complaint with the City. The city’s fair housing ordinance was only enacted in 1997. And, Garland’s Fair Housing Services team is said to be among the most highly trained and skilled investigators in Texas. The key to their success has been collaboration with community organizations and other stakeholders to educate citizens on Fair Housing laws and eliminate housing discrimination. A high ranking official with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development had nothing to say but mostly positive things about the way Garland officials and their partners have advanced the City’s housing marketplace. Thurman Miles, Region VI director of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development commended the city’s program despite the lack of adequate funding. “You have a wonderful housing leader in Hosea [Alvarado],” said Arkansas State Fair Housing Commission executive director Carol Johnson who gave the keynote speech during the luncheon ceremony. Mayor Jones also presented Fair Housing and Summer Nutrition Awards: The Community Service Agency Award was presented to Rashidah Madyun director of the Urban League-Garland Community Center. The Community Housing Award was presented to Denish Wilson-Owens executive director of the Garland housing Agency. The Cultural Education Award and Public Awareness Award (News Coverage) were presented to Minerva I. Moreno with the Community Multicultural Commission and Linda Jaresh with AroundGarland.com.
