Dear Jill: No, not at all. You should have told her to leave and not return until she can give your son sensible advice or no advice at all. Let me tell you this: I commend you for teaching your son to learn how to bargain shop. Keeping up with others never leads to progress or success. Boys/men steal mainly because they feel poor and fear they cannot obtain what others accomplished. You know what…that same sister-in-law will spend thousands of dollars for your son’s clothes and not spend one dime towards his college education. Think about it. The present economy all over the world is at a crucial point. Jill, continue to teach your son the value of hardships and struggles. As to your sister-in-law, she will soon join the ranks of other spendthrifts standing on the corner hoping someone will pass by and drop a coin in her hat. To save and sacrifice you will one day reach the top of your dreams. MY RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT OBAMA ON LESBIAN, GAY MARRIAGE I support President Obama on most of his policies and positions: healthcare, education, the wealthy paying their fair share, most of his foreign policy, most steps taken to rebuild the economy. But, for purely biblical reasons, I cannot support his personal stance on the issue of the right of Lesbian and Gay couples to marry. I am writSr. Pastor Leonard Leach ing this for others who like The Mount- Garland, TX me, want to remain supportive of this historic and honorable presidency but who also feel it necessary to be clear on how we are, or should be, informed by our Christian faith. At the same time, I am aware that there will be some, Christian and non Christian, who disagree with my position. I understand that, as a matter of LAW, people must be treated equal based on what the LAW says is legal and that people in a democracy have a right and responsibility to protest when the LAW is considered wrong. So, I write to address the President’s position only as it relates to his reference to or allusion there to, his Christian faith being motivation, in whole or in part, for his stance. First, Homosexuality is sin in the practice of the Judeo Christian Faith (Genesis 19:12-29; Romans 1:18-32; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11). This position is always confusing because first, everyone does not recognize or accept the very concept of sin; then, of those who agree on the concept, there is not total agreement on just what constitutes sin. But, in the Judeo Christian world view, God and only God designates what is and is not sin; and, HIS word has so designated homosexuality with all its mutations as sin. Secondly, the basis for the push for equal rights for the LGBT community cannot justly be considered the same as
the push for equal rights for ethnic minorities. We believe that the fight for civil rights for blacks and other ethnic minorities is predicated on the obvious birth factor and that homosexuality is an acquired post birth desire resulting in a lifestyle choice. If the desire for this lifestyle in any way stems from birth, then it does so in the same manner as for all human beings because we are all “born in sin and shaped in iniquity” (Ps. 51:5). But, God has opened our eyes to what sin is in HIS eyes (Exodus 20:1-17) and has sent his ONLY BEGOTTEN SON to deliver us from what we could not deliver ourselves from (John 3:16). To put it plainly, Christ died NOT to give us a right to remain in what HE calls sin but to give us another chance to live free from it (John 3:16; 2 Cor. 2:17; 5:17-21). This is a purely Christian perspective and as Christians we are guided by it. Thirdly, Christians have a responsibility to respond in love to everyone (Leviticus 19:18, Matthew 19:19, Matthew 22:39, Mark 12:31, Romans 13:9, Galatians 5:14, James 2:8); that includes those who may be considered or consider themselves our enemies (Matthew 5:44). Now, in an effort to practice this love, we cannot condone what God condemns; and HE condemns ALL sin. Therefore, the Christian response to this and other sin is to love the sinners but hate their sin as God does (John 3:16, Romans 1:24, 28). Being Christian means we live by another set of principles (1 Cor. 6:11; 1 Peter 2:9). We no longer think or behave like others in the world; our desire is first for the things that are of the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). Some, who are personable, passionate, prestigious, persuasive and powerful and who say they are Christian, have tried to mesh an unchristian lifestyle into a Christian lifestyle; the two are inherently incompatible. They are trying to force acceptance of that lifestyle with its, lustful passions, on the church as acceptable (Matthew 11:12). However, God’s way does not change because a Continued Page 9

JUNETEENTH 2012: COMMEMORATING THE ENDING OF SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES Staff Reports
The Emancipation Proclamation officially declared the end of slavery in the United States on January 1, 1863 but that document nor anything resembling it was not announced or recognized in Texas until June 19, 1865. On June 19, 1865 US Army Major-General Gordon Granger landed by ship in Galveston, Texas. Shortly after the ship docked General Gordon Granger read General Orders, No.3 to the people
of Galveston. It stated among other things that: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed
that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.” The celebration of June 19 as emancipation day spread from Texas to the neighboring states of Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. It has also appeared in Alabama, Florida, and California as African-American Texans migrated. In many parts of Texas, ex-slaves purchased land, or “emancipation grounds,” Continued Page 6

First, let me say that I’m glad that our nation has reached a point where it could elect a person of color to the highest office in the land. I am equally grateful for the work that the
NAACP has done throughout the years to help African Americans. That said, however, one can never accept endorsements, policies or sentiments from organizations or the White House that clearly oppose teachings from the Word of God. Your recent decision to endorse same sex marriage has led me to address you with respect but at the same time with candor and correction. President Jealous states, “Civil marriage is a civil right and a matter of civil law. The NAACP’s support for marriage equality is deeply rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution
and equal protection of all people.” Make no mistake about it, I’m all for protecting the civil rights of all people; but same sex marriage (as I see it) is not a matter of “civil rights” but a request for “special rights”. Do we really think that the Fourteenth Amendment is talking about men marrying men and women marrying women? Did we really misinterpret this for all these years? What happens if a man wants to marry two men or a woman wants to marry two women? Would the National NAACP fight on their behalf for the right to do so? What happens if a straight woman wants to

Historically, Juneteenth has always been an opportunity to appreciate the African American experience and is a holiday inclusive of all races, ethnicities and nationalities. Juneteenth has traditionally been celebrated with regional or communitywide celebrations closely tied with reunions and featuring food, fun, and a focused on ideals for selfimprovement and educational talks, speeches or sermons by guest speakers. Juneteenth was first associated with Texas and other Southern states but during the Civil Rights Era of the 1960’s the tradition spread all across the US to the extent that Juneteenth cel-
ebrations are celebrated in northern cities. The State of Texas made Juneteenth an official holiday on Jan. 1, 1980, and became the first state in the US to grant it government recognition. Several states have since issued proclamations recognizing the holiday but Texas remains alone in granting it full state holiday status, a day when government employees have the day off. Supporters and celebrants of Juneteenth continue to grow in number and in diversity; today, Juneteenth is promoted not only as a commemoration of African-American freedom, but as an example and encouragement of self-development and respect for all cultures.

Texas made history once again in 1998 with the passing of House Bill 1216 which created the Texas Emancipation Juneteenth Cultural & Historical Commission TEJCHC. The bill was sponsored by Representative Al Edwards of Houston Texas. It is the only commission of its kind in the US. The Commission’s primary objective is to erect a Juneteenth memorial monument on the South grounds of the State Capitol. This project is well underway with a design and funding in the works. TEJCHC will also place Juneteenth monuments and markers in various historical parts of Texas including Galveston, Texas. The Commission will
also develop a Juneteenth Museum, Cultural and Educational institute, Recreation Center and Park, and plans to implement Juneteenth history into the Texas History schoolbooks. The first official meeting was held June 6,1998 in Austin, Texas. Representative Al Edwards called the meeting to order. Members present were Stella Roland of Austin, Eddie Richardson of Lubbock, Dr. Maceo Dailey of El Paso, Linda Tarr of Houston, Byron Miller of San Antonio, Willard Stimpson of Dallas, representatives were present for Sen. Royce West, Sen. Rodney Ellis, Rep. Patricia Gray. Larry Oaks of The Texas Historical Commission was also present.

THANK YOU FATHERS Recently I read a story in the news about two teen sisters who had their father arrested for disciplining one of the sisters. Although I didn’t witness this incident, nor know the father personally, it appears that the father was simply exerting authority over his household. It is a father’s responsibility and God given authority to be the head of the household. Our earthly father is to follow the example of our heavenly Father. A father’s role is to love, lead, protect, provide, teach, guide, set rules, model, encourage and discipline his children. His home should be committed to instilling Godly principles into his children by constantly repeating them over and over (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). This enables children to choose the right path when they are older and they will remain upon it (Proverbs 22:6). While some may consider it unfair to judge these two young girls for their disrespectful behavior toward their father, it is neither unfair nor unreasonable for a father to discipline his children and expect obedience from them. If nothing else, children owe their parents respect for giving them life, let alone providing and taking care of them. God’s Divine Plan provides instructions for parents and children so that they may live a life that is both pleasing and acceptable to him. To the children, God says “Listen to your father’s instructions¸ pay attention and grow wise for he is giving you good guidance” (Proverbs 4:1-2). “Children are to honor and obey their parents because they belong to the Lord and it is the right thing to do “(Eph.6:1-2). Exodus 20:12 reminds us to “Honor your father and your mother¸ then you will live a long full life in the land the Lord your God will give you.” To the parents, God says “Don’t fail to correct your children, they won’t die if you spank them, physical discipline may well save them from death” (Proverbs 23:13-14). With that being said, Ephesians reminds fathers that they are not to make their children angry by the way they treat them, but rather bring them up with discipline and instruction approved by the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). So, to those fathers who lead their families as our heavenly Father has instructed them to do, I say “Thank you fathers.”

men were beaten, castrated and hanged. African Americans were bound and did not have freedom. Moreover, after slavery ended, African Americans were still murdered, raped, had our property burned to the ground, had to sit at the back of the bus, couldn’t drink at certain water fountains or eat at certain restaurants - just to name a few. Civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., emerged championing the battle for civil rights. Listen to an extract of his August 28th 1963 speech as he fought and ultimately died fighting for civil rights of African Americans. He said, “We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is
the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied, as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro’s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating “For Whites Only”. We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote . . .” In my opinion, these
are the words of the greatest (human) civil rights leader of the 20th century and arguably of all time. Think about this. All of the above atrocities were done while the government of the United States sat by (and for the most part) did nothing. Many African Americans (even if it’s not being reported in the news) are asking, “When was there ever a systematic, strategic, coordinated effort to put the homosexual community through any of the above atrocities?” That’s right. The answer is Never. This is
precisely why many African Americans are deeply disturbed by the National NAACP comparing “the request” for marriage equality (within the gay community) with the civil rights movement for which African Americans struggled and died. I believe the National NAACP has made a huge error for which the price is great and consequences even greater. I do, however, continue to pray for you and the leadership of our great nation. EASTFIELD UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM’S FUNDING RENEWED

MESQUITE – Romilio Castillo, Director of Eastfield College’s Upward Bound program, was notified recently that the program has been refunded by the U.S. Department of Education for another five years (2012-2017). This assures Eastfield UB the opportunity to continue to serve promising high school students in Southeast/Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, specifically
Skyline Magnet High School and W.W. Samuell High School. The purpose of UB program is to generate the skills and motivation necessary for students to complete their secondary education and to enroll in and complete a program of post-secondary study. Student participants can access a variety of services including academic tutoring, cultural enrichment
activities, financial literacy, Dual/College credit, and personal enrichment workshops in becoming future college students. UB students also are engaged at EFC by participating in a 6-week summer component as well as volunteering at EFC events. Thank you to the EFC staff and faculty who have supported UB. “To date, our program has served over 400 first generation to college students. Many have gone on to graduate from SMU, Texas A&M, UT Austin, Baylor, Texas Women’s University, University of North Texas and other institutions” says Castillo. person is or people are talented, gifted, witty, intelligent, wealthy or even nice. All these attributes come from God and we are not to worship the creature over the creator (Romans 1:25). Finally, the Bible is God’s revelation of Who HE is and what HE requires the message of HIS WORD is constant, it does not evolve (Isaiah 40:6-8; Matthew 24:35) - HE is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow (Hebrews 13:8). He does not change neither
does what HE requires. Subsequently, God’s view of sin does not change according to or in compliance with popular vote or opinion; even if that vote or opinion is based on incipient practice, intense passion or intellectual principle. As Christians, the bible is our “rule of law”, it keeps us stable when the winds of doctrine blow (Ephesians 4:14). Christians do not need to become vitriolic in addressing this issue. Rather, stand on HIS WORD and wait for the day when everyone will acknowledge that
Jesus is Lord and what HE has said is LAW (Philippians 2:9-11). In summary: Christians must view homosexuality and ALL sin with its mutations as SIN. Christians must view the participants with the love of Christ and not add to the fire with vitriol, animus and angst - but with love and a willingness to restore or agree to disagree. Christians must be content to stand firm on the unchanging WORD of GOD and wait for HIM to make the matter clear once and for all!

The 2012 Inaugural North Texas Juneteenth Golf Tournament is set for Mon., June 18 at MH Wright Park municipal golf course located at 5403 Business Hwy. 69 South in Greenville. Check-in is 7am with an 8am tee-off. The tournament is being organized by Phalconstar Communications, a local media company along with the
ET Club, a fundraising arm for the oldest African American fraternal organization in Greenville, Beehive Lodge #105, PHA. “We have players coming in from around the state, some as far away as Lubbock,” says event organizer Will Hobdy. African Americans and the game of golf reached a milestone after only about thirty-one years of freedom when John Shippen became the first African

American to play in the U.S. Open in 1896. Sandwiched between African American golfing greats like Shippen and Tiger Woods- today, there has been other national legends like Ann Gregory, Charlie Sifford, Pete Brown, Ben Davis and Lee Elder. “The tournament is limited to only 22, two-person teams, but everybody is invited, including women” said Hobdy. “A few slots remain. AUSTIN - June 16 marks the 23rd anniversary of the Texas Fair Housing Act, which was signed into law by Gov. William Clements in 1989. The law prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of race, religion, color, gender, national origin, disability and familial status. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is charged with investigating and seeking to conciliate complaints of discrimination in both housing and employment. During state fiscal year 2011, the agency’s Civil Rights Division (CRD) investigated and closed 1,285 housing and employment discrimination com-

plaints and in more than 350 cases the complaint was successfully conciliated or settled. More than $2.2 million in relief was obtained for individuals who filed claims alleging discrimination in Texas during that period. “Texas law grants its citizens the opportunity to live and work in this state without being subject to discrimination,” said Commissioner Thomas M. Anderson, chair of the Texas Commission on Human Rights, the oversight board of the Civil Rights Division. “TWC’s Civil Rights Division will enforce the Texas Fair Housing Act and the Texas Commission on Human Rights Act against practices that violate fair housing and
employment rights.” The Texas Commission on Human Rights Act prohibits denial of employment based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (includes sexual harassment and pregnancy), age, disability or retaliation. CRD provides training to employers and housing providers with the goal of preventing and eliminating illegal discrimination. TWC’s CRD is headed by the seven-member Texas Commission on Human Rights. A&M-COMMERCE’S GAME WITH MIDWESTERN STATE AT COWBOYS STADIUM MOVED TO PRIMETIME

COMMERCE- A&MCommerce last week announced a change to the Lions’ 2012 football schedule as the game against Midwestern State at Cowboys Stadium has been moved to primetime, kicking off at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 13 and serving as the opening act of the 2012 Lone Star Football Festival. The game was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, September 14. “We feel this move will benefit everyone involved,” said Athletic Director Carlton Cooper. “Once again, we will kick off the Lone Star Foot-
ball Festival and this also allows us to have the sole attention of not just the conference but Division II football on that night. It provides better opportunities for our alumni and fans to enjoy the experience and should be a highlight of the upcoming season for A&M-Commerce.” Once again, A&M-Commerce’s game at Cowboys Stadium will also serve as the annual Harvey Martin Classic, now entering its fifth season. The game honors former Lion AllAmerican and Super Bowl MVP Harvey Martin, who

helped lead East Texas State to the 1972 NAIA national title before earning a Super Bowl ring with the Dallas Cowboys in 1978. The first three games of the Harvey Martin Classic were played in the historic Cotton Bowl at the Texas State Fairgrounds before moving to Cowboys Stadium in 2011. A number of events are in the planning stages for this year’s festivities with details being announced as they become available. With the A&M-Commerce/ Midwestern State game being moved to Thursday evening, the scheduling for the second

day of the Lone Star Football Festival has also been adjusted. Eastern New Mexico and Incarnate Word will now play at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon while the high school showdown between Southlake Carroll and Temple getting underway at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening. The Saturday slate remains the same as Angelo State takes on Gulf South Conference foe Valdosta State at noon, Tarleton State and Abilene Christian play at 4 p.m. with Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M closing out the three-day event at 8 p.m. Tickets for the Festival will

Season ticket information for the 2012 A&M-Commerce football season will be released early next week as the Lions move toward a challenging upcoming slate. A&M-Commerce will have five home dates in 2012, with two of those teams (Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M) having qualified for the postseason in 2011. Rivals Texas A&MKingsville and Tarleton State both make the trek to Memorial Stadium this fall as well.
