K AESNDOLYN S! E GW N I BA I DIDN’T WANT TO ATTEND MY SON’S GRADUATION! Dear Gwendolyn: My son graduated last month but I could not attend the ceremony. I just couldn’t. This is why I could not attend: All my son’s friends received a new car as their graduation gift. Two weeks before graduation I went all over town trying to finance for him a car. I was offered some good deals, but I wanted a new car like his friends. Because of my bad credit status, I was turned down for a new car loan. Gwendolyn, you can understand my absence, can’t you? Delores

Dear Delores: No, I cannot understand. What type of person are you? Better yet! What type of a mother are you? Why do you think young boys grow into men who steal and kill? I have the answer. They do so because of mothers like you. Then you sit looking dumb in the face wondering just where you went wrong in his upbringing. You should be teaching your son he will not get everything he wants just because he wants it. Although, it seems your son is fine. You are the one with the problem. Delores, you should have been there front and center to see your son receive his diploma. For a mother to see her son strive for greatness is a wonderful thing. Friends come and go according to one’s interest. Therefore, his friends will change as he changes. Tell your son you are proud of him and never let him down again. Think about it. Regarding a high degree:The student who has to struggle hard to achieve it is the student who will --- receive it.

WHITE EVANGELICALS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY – AGAIN By Rev. Amos C. Brown NNPA Guest Columnist

Throughout the diabolical devastation of slavery to the turbulent tragedies and injustices endured during the Jim Crow era and the Civil Rights Movement, many southern evangelical preachers were on the wrong side of the issues. In 1845, during a gathering of White Southern Baptist ministers in Augusta, Ga., there was a rippling internal controversy over whether slave owners could be missionaries in foreign countries while owning slaves. Thus on the heels of being sharply divided over the issue of slavery, the Southern Baptist Convention was formed, breaking away from the American Baptist Home Mission Society. As this southern contingency of evangelical preachers said no to giving up their slaves, they also said no to the human rights of African Americans. It was the beginning of a long pattern of lining up on the wrong side of the issues when it came to standing up for liberty and justice for all. Revisiting this bleak chapter of American history is critical to understanding the religious right in 2012. To understand the history of the southern evangelical movement and its evolution, it is helpful to understand how modern day southern evangelicals have developed an alliance with a right-wing agenda that continues to, with vigor, divide, devastate and destroy human and civil rights. Let us fast forward to North Carolinians’ recently held voting for the state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages and civil unions. It is no coincidence that staunch white southern evangelicals, the National Organization for Marriage (who designed a secret strategic plan in 2010 to drive a wedge between gays and Blacks), and the right wing of the Republican Party, have aligned themselves for political gain on this issue though they want you to believe it is purely a theological stance consistent with Biblical beliefs. The goal is to weaken and fragment the AfricanAmerican voting block for President Obama in November while courting much needed Hispanic voters for southern evangelical support for Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

To put this in context, ask yourself: What side of civil rights did the southern evangelical preacher or right wing political base stand when it came to issues such as equal protection under the law, desegregation, women’s rights and voting rights? What side did the Reverend Billy and Franklin Grahams of the worlds stand during the civil rights movement? For generations, politics and religion have made for strange bedfellows, all the more reason for Black people in particular to not be used as a political tool in the vote for a ban on gay marriage in North Carolina or get caught up in the middle of an age-old divisive tactic and strategies aimed at promoting a right-wing, money- and power-driven agenda and, more aggressively, the conspiracy against the re-election of President Obama. While I personally do not perform same-sex marriages because of my Baptist faith tradition, I will not be guilty of being intolerant. I was supportive of the president before his decision to support same-sex marriage and I am still supportive of him. President Obama gave his personal reasons for adopting his position and made it very clear that those who for religious reasons did not agree with him, he still had respect for their faith traditions. The Bible says in the words of Jesus, “We must be wise as serpents and humble as doves.” Therefore, African Americans should still support this president because our main goal is to make sure that he is re-elected. Let’s look at how people on the other side behave. The Rev. Robert Jef-fress, pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, said during the Republican primary that Mormonism is a “cult” and that Romney is not a Christian. However, Jeffress has since come out boldly endorsing Romney for president. Here’s a minister that in one instance can withhold support from a candidate because of his religious convictions yet closes rank behind that same man after he was selected to oppose America’s first Black president. In 1960, some Blacks, including preachers, did not support John F. Kennedy for president because he was Catholic. But Kennedy was elected and the nation

When to expect a revival? When there is a lack of brotherly love and Christian confidence among believers, then a revival is needed. Expect a revival when there are dissensions, jealousies, and evil rumors among believers. Revival is needed when there is a worldly spirit in the church. When the church finds its members falling into gross and scandalous sins, then it is time to wake up and cry to God for a revival. If a minister finds he or she has lost, in any degree, the confidence of his people, he or she should work for a revival, knowing it is the only means of regaining the church confidence. “O Lord, revive Your Work” (Hab.3:2) Preparing the Heart for Revival.Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, till he comes and rains righteousness on you (Hosea 10:12). If you want to break up the fallow ground of your heart, you must begin by looking at yourself and examine your heart. Things we sometimes neglect when we don’t examine our heart. Ingratitude, ungrateful, lack of love for God, neglecting our bible reading, neglect our prayer life, poor spiritual attitude, meaning the way we perform our spiritual duties with a lack of feeling or faith. Lack of love for soul winning of our fellowmen, Lack of concern for unbelievers, sin of hypocrisy, neglect family and private duties, active sin choices, envy, a critical spirit, slander, lying, pride, worldlymindedness, lack of seriousness , cheating, hypocrisy, bad temper, hinder others from being useful and robbing God. Be the master of your appetite not the slave. (Eph 4:22) That ye put off concern the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts (Galatians 3:27). For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Lay aside all dependence on yourself in every respect in which you want Christ. Without revival, there usually will not even be as many people converted as die in a year. Without a revival, sinners will grow harder and harder despite preaching. We do not begin the relationship of branch to the Vine without our own activity, nor do we abide in Christ without a constant cleaving to Him by faith. Of necessity, the will must always be alive. We will cleave to Christ or to something else. (John 15:1-8) Christ is the true vine, and we are the branches. Christ is the only means of Revival. Christ is also the keeper of the soul. After opposing proposed anti-marriage equality laws on a number of occasions in various states, the NAACP National Board upped the ante last month by passing a

June 1-15, 2012

resolution in support of marriage equality. The announcement fell on the heels of President Obama recently coming out in favor of gay marriage. “I’ve been going through an evolution on this issue. I’ve always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally,” the President told ABC news. “At a certain point I’ve just concluded that, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” said the President. The group said it did not issue its support of marriage equality from a personal, moral, or reli-

gious perspective. Rather, we deeply respect differences of personal conscience on the religious definition of marriage, and we strongly affirm the religious freedoms of all as protected by the First Amendment said Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors. “When people ask why the NAACP stands firmly for marriage equality, we say that we have always stood against laws which demean, dehumanize, or discriminate against any person in this great country,” said Brock. “That is our legacy. For over 103 years we have stood against such laws, and while the nature of the struggle may change, our bedrock

commitment to equality of all people under the law never will.” “Marriage equality for the NAACP goes at least as far back as the Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia in 1967,” said Brock. “In the year before she died, Mildred Loving, who successfully sued to end legally sanctioned marriage inequality based on race, wrote a powerful piece which ended - and I quote: ‘I am proud that Richard’s and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. I sup-

port the freedom to marry for all. That’s what Loving, and loving, are all about.’ Critics say gay marriage is broadly-opposed in the African American community. “The NAACP has abandoned its historic responsibility to speak for and safeguard the civil rights movement,” said Rev. William Owens, Founder and President of Memphis based Coalition of African American Pastors (CAAP). Benjamin Todd Jealous, President and CEO of the NAACP said, “We make this statement today because it is the legacy and responsibility of the Continued Page 8

A WORD ON HOW TO SUCCEED IN LIFE Ask any young person what he or she desires in life and the typical response is “to be successful”. Success in life is desirable and commendable for everyone. It is what every parent desires for their children. In fact, it should be everyone’s goal. Success has been defined as having favorable results, good fortune or prosperity. But success is a relative word, meaning different things to different individuals. Much has been written about “How to Succeed in Life”. There have been numerous books, seminars, CD’s and prosperity gurus advising us on success. So, why add in my two cents on the topic? With so many young people graduating from high school and college and entering a new phase of life, I felt that a Christian’s perspective on the topic was appropriate. Let me begin by saying that I am no expert on any topic, especially those concerning matters of life. But, scripture says if any man lacks wisdom let him ask God and He will gladly give it (James 1:5). As Christians our methods and views on how to succeed in life should be different from those of the world. We are to consult God’s word for guidance in every area of our lives. Since God’s word is truth and truth is light, the bible is our best source. So, it makes good sense to consult his word on “How to Succeed in Life”. Since the book of Proverbs provides for the application of divine wisdom and moral instruction for daily living, it is the perfect place to start. The following verses give insight on how God views success. First of all, begin with godliness or righteousness, “The Lord approves of those who are good, but he condemns those who plan wickedness” (Prov. 12:2). Next, hate what is false, “Those who are godly hate lies, the wicked come to shame and disgrace”. “Godliness helps people all through life, while the evil are destroyed by their wickedness” (Prov.13:5-6). Proverbs 16:3 says “Commit your work to the Lord, and then your plans will succeed”. In addition, use your words with restraint (listen and learn). Be even tempered, think before you speak (Prov. 17:27-28). Love wisdom and understanding, “To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper” (Prov. 19:8). Be humble and fear the Lord, “True humility and fear of the Lord leads to riches, honor and long life” (Prov. 22:4). Be willing to confess and forsake sin, “People who cover over their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and forsake them, they will receive mercy” (Prov. 28:13). Finally, those who put their trust in the Lord will not only succeed in this life but also in the life to come!

NAACP to speak up on the civil rights issues of our times. We are both proud of our history and challenged by it -- Challenged to never allow threats to equality for all people under the law to go uncontested. “As marriage equality has expanded to an ever increasing number of states, other states have taken to once again enshrining discrimination in their Constitutions. At the same time, Members of Congress have taken again to using budget votes and other tricks to restrict marriage equality. We want to be on record that the NAACP now firmly

opposes all efforts to restrict marriage equality. We will oppose threats to the Fourteenth Amendment guarantee of equal rights under the law in any state where this issue is raised. And we will follow our historic mission to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all persons. This means that we will oppose all efforts by members of Congress or any Administration to enshrine discrimination in the laws of our great country.” Jealous went on to say, “Finally, let me say that this is one of the key civil rights struggles of our time. We at the NAACP understand that with all such struggles, there are con-

versations that happen at dinner tables, among families, and across our communities. These conversations are between good people who are looking to their own hearts to figure out what to believe and how to act. We respect that this is how change is ultimately made. Indeed it is the context in which the NAACP has fought for civil rights throughout our history. Civil marriage, like all civil rights provided by the government, must be provided equally to all Americans. The NAACP has been making the case for equality for 103 years, and we will continue to do so throughout our Association’s second century.”
