Family, Friends Bid Farewell to Lubbock Co-Publisher

New Year’s Eve is fun me, but… Dear Gwendolyn: I have been married for 10 years and for 9 of those years my husband has taken me to a party celebra ng the coming of a new year. However, last year when I was in the hospital, my husband went out with his friends in celebra on. In that one night of fun, he met another woman. All during this year I have been figh ng the ba le to keep him. Two weeks ago he told me that he was taking her out on New Year’s Eve. In fact, he said he intends to leave me for her - saying he was in love. Gwendolyn, we have children together. Their ages are 2 years, 5 years, and 8 years. He was supposed to be keeping our children on last New Year’s Eve, but he had taken them to my mother’s house. What can I do? I don’t want to spend New Year’s Eve alone. I love my husband. Margaret Dear Margaret: What’s love got to do with it? You have spent all of 2010 trying to ba le to keep him - and he has spent all of 2010 cour ng his new love. I would like to think that the woman he met on last New Year’s Eve was a passing drunk affec on. You know…drinking and having a good me. Let me tell you this: It was okay for your husband to take the children to your mother. At least he did not leave them at home alone. Margaret, never let a man know just how hurt you really are. It is sickening to watch the TV talk shows showing women crying as if their life ended with losing their mate. Think about it. To have a bad marriage is worse than not having a marriage at all. Hold your head high and on New Year’s Eve keep your children up late to bring in the New Year. A marriage license does not come with a ‘guarantee.’ When the New Year comes in have the mindset to get rid of the old --- and seek someone new. Do you have a son or grandson age 10-17? Help him to choose college - not jail. To order go to website: www.gwenbaines.com or write to her at: P. O. Box 10066, Raleigh, NC 27605-0066 (to receive a reply send a self-addressed stamped envelope) or email her at: gwenbaines@hotmail.com. If you have a problem? “Ask Gwendolyn Baines.”

spearheaded Lubbock’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations. One of Eddie’s biggest contribution to the black community in Lubbock, was working with his partner and dearest friend for 40 years, T.J. Patterson, at the Southwest Digest Newspaper office. Richardson and Patterson met in 1970, which at the time Richardson wanted to write for a paper. Mr. Patterson thought that Eddie was losing his mind, but about six years later, they crafted their first paper for the black community. Later on through the years, Eddie persuaded T.J. to run for office ad City Councilman. Eddie had a heart for people, regardless to race, greed or color. He always wanted to do whatever he could to help people.

FASHION STOP

His Plan: Better Than Mine By Patricia R. McCurdy

As always, with the start of a new year, many of us view this time as an opportunity for a fresh beginning, a time to make desired changes in our lives. Therefore, some of us give lip service and make the familiar New Year’s Resolutions with few of our dreams actually coming to fruition. While some Christians do thank God for all blessings received throughout the previous year, many forget to put God ahead of all their plans for the coming year. If we expect success in the New Year then we must put God ahead of all our plans. Years ago as a younger adult and a fragile Christian, I tended to make the typical plans at the start of each New Year only to resolve in the same unsuccessful results. Of course it was due to my own ignorance and lack of knowledge concerning God’s word. I didn’t realize or understand that my plans should be based upon God’s plans and his purpose for my life. Though a late bloomer, I came to realize that it’s all about God and not about me. Although still under construction and still growing spiritually, I also came to realize that God’s Plan is so much better than mine! God’s Divine Plan provides that we follow his plan when making all of our plans. His purpose is that we glorify him in all we do. In fact, when we seek to glorify God first he blesses our plans. Scripture says in Proverbs 12:5, “The plans of the Godly are just”. God’s plan for us begins with our obedience to him (Deut. 8:1). This obedience to him should be in every area of our life including our heart, will, mind, body, our finances and our future. Our heart’s obedience should be that we love him more than anyone or anything. Our will should be that we are totally committed to his will and his plan above our own. Our mind should be that we seek to know him and his word, while applying and allowing his principles and values to be the foundation of our lives. Our bodies are temples and do not belong to us and should be used according to God’s purposes. This includes our strengths, gifts, talents and sexuality. Our resources all come from God this includes our finances. Thus we are to manage our finances as good stewards. As for our future, we are to be faithful to God, making service to him and man the main purpose of our life’s work. Finally, if we want our plans to be successful in the New Year, we must adhere to God’s plan first in our lives and understand that his plan is better than our own.

Erin McCurdy Garland Journal

Most of us hate to see the year end, but there is one good thing that comes. It’s a new year! This means a fresh start and a time of self -renewal. Of course, that typically means making resolutions which involve

the usual suspects of better health, more wealth and an overall better you. Throughout the year, many of us are busy working, being students, trying to take care of a family or all of the above. Whatever your goals maybe for 2011, why not let this year’s focus be taking better care of you! This means nourishing your mind, body and soul. The most important thing is your physical health. Begin by scheduling appointments for annual physicals, vision, dental and other annual check -ups. Also, try to eat healthier, drink eight glasses of water,

get enough sleep, and incorporate more physical activity. These simple things will help you look and feel better. Take more time out for yourself to do what you enjoy. Spend the day shopping to buy yourself a new outfit or a sassy pair of heels and a new handbag. Plan a day at the spa for the ultimate pampering or getting a manicure- pedicure. Have a girl’s night, serve wine and cheese, do facials or just get together to chit chat. When budget permits, have a weekend getaway with your friends, spouse or family for a few days of relaxation. Also, get snazzy and jazzed up for a special dinner with friends or your significant other. A happy new you could

also mean planning to go back to school and fulfilling your dream. It may be attaining your degree or a different degree, making a career change or just getting a new job. Whatever it may be, pursue what it is that really makes you happy. Don’t forget the simple things like relaxing your mind. For some people this may be through prayer, meditation or having some type of spiritual time. This is extremely important because it relaxes the mind and body which helps to reduce your stress. Join an organization that interest you or help others for a good cause by volunteering. Also, consider taking up a hobby or revive Contined Next Page

an old one that you once enjoyed such as playing an instrument, sewing or reading. This is easily overlooked but can be very therapeutic. Finally, learn to treat yourself well. Take long bubble baths, use the special lingerie and wear those special outfits and stop saving them for “the right occasion.” You can wear them

when visiting a friend or going to dinner. Use your good linens, dishes, stem ware and aromatic candles for yourself and not just for your guest or entertaining. Remember life is short and should not be taken for granted. So enjoy your life and your nice things yourself or someone else will. Let this year be more than a Happy New Year but also a Happy New You!
