K AESNDOLYN S! E GW N I BA I CAN’T DECIDE WHO WILL GET A GIFT! Dear Gwendolyn: I am 38 years old and my money is funny. This is the problem: I have six women friends – all on an intimate scale. I don’t know which one to give a Christmas gift. I am seriously thinking of quitting all of them and rekindle after Christmas. Well, let me correct that. I need to not rekindle until after Valentine’s Day. I hate to give one a gift and not the other five. I know that is not right but I cannot afford to make all of my old ladies happy. I may have to permanently quit two of them because they want to get married. My intention on marriage is not until I am at least 50. I am a player Gwendolyn. Can’t help it. If I quit all of them, they will still love me later. You know…women are silly that way. Bob

Dear Bob: I am speechless. I can’t believe it. Six women? All intimate with you? Oh yeah, you’re right. They are silly. But let me tell you this: Don’t think all women are stupid. I knew you didn’t have quality women when you referred to them as your ‘old ladies.’ Any man who cannot refer to a lady in a more respectable way is not worth having. So, Bob, don’t lose those women because they do come few. Now, as to your intention to marry at 50. I hate to burst your bubble. But think about. That birthday party will never happen. You cannot play with the affection of every woman. Often the ‘player’ gets played. You may think they are silly, but one of them may actually show you silly. If you do not contract a disease that kills you, one of those --- silly women will.

IS THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT WORTH SAVING?

COMMENTARY / Lone Star Project

Forty-five years ago, displaying the courage of a true Texan, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the historic Voting Rights Act into law. His actions signaled the end of a generation of government sanctioned discrimination and ensured that minority citizens would have legal protection to register, vote, and an opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice. Today, however, two Republican Texans – Rick Perry and Gregg Abbott – are working to turn back the clock. They want to destroy the Voting Rights Act and return to a day when governments sanctioned racial discrimination. That’s the real issue at stake in the Texas redistricting battle. When Greg Abbott asked the Supreme Court to block the use of the court-ordered redistricting plans in Texas, he was stepping up as the leader of the darkest most divisive forces in our society who want to erase the US Voting Rights Act. If allowed, Greg Abbott, Rick Perry and the current Texas leadership will tear down every barrier in place that might stop them from destroying the voting strength of Latino and African American citizens, not just in Texas, but everywhere across our nation. What did the Supreme Court do? At the request of Greg Abbott, acting on behalf of Rick Perry and the Texas leadership, the Supreme Court issued an order temporarily blocking the use of the legislative and congressional plans ordered by a Federal District Court in San Antonio for the 2012 elections. However, the Supreme Court did not order that the discriminatory plans passed by the Republican Legislature be used. Instead, the Court will hear arguments from both the Republicans and plaintiff groups opposing them to determine what criteria lower Courts should use when determining the boundaries of the not yet pre-cleared redistricting plans.

What will Abbott and his allies argue? Texas Republicans and their extremist national allies will argue for the virtual elimination of Section 5 of the US Voting Rights Act. They will claim that maps passed by state legislatures – even those like Texas that have a long history of racial discrimination – should be implemented even if they have not yet been reviewed to ensure they do not discriminate against minority voters. (Sources: State of Texas’ Stay Request to the Supreme Court, SOT’s Reply Brief, Robert Miller’s SCOTUS Blog) What will Plaintiffs supported by the Lone Star Project argue? Lone Star Project-supported plaintiffs and our allies will argue for the preservation of the standard of law that has stood for a generation. Simply stated, any redistricting plan passed by a state covered under the Voting Rights Act must be pre-cleared to ensure against racial discrimination. If a State like Texas intentionally delays pre-clearance or seeks to avoid it altogether, a Federal District Court must step in to draw new lines and, in doing so, use the existing lines as the baseline and not the likely discriminatory lines approved by the State. (Reponses to Stay Request: MALC, Texas NAACP, LULAC, and Perez (Dutton) plaintiffs, Wendy Davis/LULAC state senate response) What is at stake? The Voting Rights Act itself hangs in the balance on the Texas redistricting decision. Plaintiffs opposing Texas Republicans must have the legal resources to make the strongest argument possible before the Supreme Court and before Courts with jurisdiction to save the Voting Rights Act. What will you do? Greg Abbott is already using your money to kill the Voting Rights Act. He is spending taxpayer funds on an outside legal counsel charging over $500 dollars

“I’M GONNA TELL IT” Patricia R. McCurdy Remember when you were a child and you saw your siblings or playmates doing something that they should not have been doing. If you weren’t involved in the mischief, your first reaction was probably - “I’m gonna tell it”. If something new or exciting happened to you at school you were probably eager to tell that too. Have you ever wondered why you are so compelled to tell something? If a situation in life was threatening or dangerous, you were probably trained to tell. However, in some situations the information was just too wonderful to keep to yourself. Whatever your reasons, you did a great job of passing on information to those who needed to know. In today’s world we are bombarded with information everywhere we turn. With numerous forms of media, someone feels the need to tell us about something. Some information is valuable and newsworthy and should be passed on. However much of the media today is filled with non- essential information that adds no value to our lives. Sometimes we find ourselves caught up in gossip or discussions concerning recent episodes of TV/radio or reality shows, mindless information that benefits no one. We spend numerous hours on the phone, talking, texting, e-mailing, tweeting, twittering or updating facebook. Somehow we find the time to tell others the things we want them to know. It appears that we were born to tell it! God’s Divine Plan provides that we as born- again Christians are born to tell it. We are born to tell the Good News of Jesus. Since we are good at passing on information and have discovered new and ingenious ways to do so, we should be busy telling those who don’t believe or know about Jesus. Scripture states in Romans 10:14-15 “But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him?” “And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him?” “And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?” “And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent?” “That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” So, let us be like children by saying “I’m Gonna Tell it” about Jesus. Let us be eager to tell others about the Good News of Salvation, for it is news worthy of telling.

Violence interrupter Cobe Williams and Lil’ Mikey.Photo by Aaron Wickenden/Courtesy of Kartemquin Films Chastity Stokes PHALCONSTAR NEWS

The Interrupters, a gut riveting film that documents urban violence, is a must see film this season. It opened last week end at the Angelika Dallas. It is big story - that after casually listening to a 90 second sound about it goes to the back of our mind. The truth is that violence in our communities has spun out of control. Death tolls are on the rise. It has become such a world-wide epidemic spectacle that we forget that it permeates our very own community. Chicago is the setting for the film. “[But] Interrupters gives it viewers not only a glimpse into the violence epidemic that plagues our American streets; but allows them to see the humanity in the people directly and indirectly affected by it” said movie goer Latifah Scott. “I

find that the success of the film is addressing the heart of the problem, which is the people,” she says. It is indeed a highly successful film. It won the Best Documentary Award in both Miami and Minneapolis among others. And, in The Interrupters it is the people who are the heroes. The director is Steve James, famous for Hoop Dreams in 1994 and the producer is Alex Kotlowitz who wrote There Are No Children Here. Shot over the course of a year, the filmed captured the period of Chicago when it became a national symbol for violence in our cities. “For me, making The Interrupters feels like a homecoming,” says director Steve James. “Since completing Hoop Dreams in 1994 this film gave me a chance to return to some of the same neighborhoods where Hoop Dreams was

made.” Making The Interrupters was a gift said producer Alex Kotlowitz. “I became a documentary filmmaker because I wanted to understand people and their communities other than the ones I have lived in. Your own personal lives and day-today worries recede and pale in comparison as you bear witness to the lives and often profound struggles of others,” Kotlowitz said. The chief characters in the film are three members of CeaseFire, a group of former lawbreakers now dedicated to keeping Chicago youths from duplicating their own mistakes. All three emerge as poignant studies in redemption. The youths they seek to protect, as well as their troubled families, come into sharp, heartfelt focus in this unforgettable film. “It is true that violence Continued Next Page

BEHOLD YOUR KING

STAFF REPORTS THE KUUMBA HERITAGE NEWS

John 19:14 “And it was the preparation of the Passover, and about the sixth hour: and said he unto the Jews, Behold your King”. Final Rejection of Jesus by the Jews: We must have the stamp of our blessed Lord, who was marred more than any man. Final Rejection of Jesus by the Jews: Notice in the chapter how Pilate tried to stand up for Jesus. John 19:15-16”But they cried out, Away with him. Pilate said unto them, shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered. We have no King but Caesar. Then they delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away”. John 15:20 “If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” You will never find anything about the easy time. All the glories came out of hard time. And if you are really reconstructed it will be in a hard time. It will be at a time when all hope is gone. You will feel like you cannot continue this way anymore. Your wells are dry and your springs of hope have stopped flowing. And Behold God makes the man and woman, it is when tried by fire that God can purge you. Only melted gold is minted. Only moistened clay receives the mold. Only soft wax receives the seal. Only broken, contrite hearts receive the mark as the potter turns us on his wheel, shaped and burnt to take and keep the heavenly mould, the stamp of God’s pure gold. When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming to him he said “Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sins of the world.”John 1:29 Proclaiming Him the One of Whom Abraham prophesied when he said to his son Isaac, “The Lord will provide Himself a Lamb” Genesis 22:8 -the Lamb of God and God the Lamb. Isaiah 40:9 “Behold your God” It was foretold of John by the Prophet Isaiah, that he would be the voice crying in the wilderness. He was to lift up his voice with strength, and cry to the cities of Judah, Behold your God!” John was so filled with the Spirit of God that the cry raised moved all Israel. This shows that when God gets hold of a man or woman and fills them with the Spirit, he can have a message, a proclamation of the Gospel that will move people. The man who does have the Spirit of the Lord may cry for many years and nobody takes notice of him. The man who is filled with the Spirit of God needs to cry out but once and people will feel the effect of it. Be Blessed.
