Kindergarten students develop both academic and social-emotional competencies all day long by engaging with peers and teachers in inquiry-andproject-based learning. Students’ thoughts, questions, and ideas are valued and they develop a voice through playing, writing, sharing their work with others, and explaining their thinking.
Children receive explicit, structured, and systematic instruction in literacy and math during scheduled blocks every day. The skills and content learnt in these explicit instructional blocks are also integrated throughout the day. This learning enables further discovery of new concepts, ideas, and practices.

Family and Community Engagement
Kindergarten students explore the idea of self, family, and community all year. In September, students explore their identity and that of their friends and learn the norms of the classroom community. Through sharing, creating, and telling stories, students tell about themselves and their families. By being out in the community, they learn about their connection to others. Sharing and Representing Our Thinking
How Can Families Engage with their Child’s Education?
Coming to Kindergarten is a big transition in your child’s life. We encourage you to talk to the teachers often about how your child is doing and feeling. Teachers will also offer many opportunities each year to invite parents to share in the children’s learning, chaperone field trips, and attend parent conferences. Students communicate and show their thinking in many ways, so we offer them different materials. Students work with recycled materials, clay, paint, sand and water, blocks, and other building materials. Because children learn from each other, they have daily opportunities to share their work with their teachers and classmates.
