Our Story: Originally built in the 1890s, the Guildhall was ravaged by aircraft assaults in the Second World War and the opulent Victorian Concert Hall was almost razed to the ground. What remained were the solid walls and clock tower, standing proudly and defiantly in a dust and debris filled sky. From the ashes, The Guildhall rose and was rebuilt in the 1950s to national acclaim, going on to host the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

In 2011, registered charity, The Portsmouth Cultural Trust took control of the operation of this iconic building and in 2019 we changed our name to The Guildhall Trust to better represent our purpose: To deliver inspirational opportunities so that people want to engage with culture and the creative economy.

Through our objectives we strive to inspire, impact and transform lives through entertainment and performance by engaging participation from the wider community. Today Portsmouth Guildhall is a vibrant and successful artistic centre and music venue, recently hosting the likes of Mumford and Sons, Gorillaz, Gary Barlow and the London, Bournemouth and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras. We run an extensive learning and participation programme engaging local people, school children and young adults. The building also serves the south coast as a major conferencing and meeting facility.

Our Community: Participate: Did you know Portsmouth Guildhall is run by a charity? It is!

Our mission is to engage the whole community and make participation easily accessible, rewarding and fun. The Charles Dickens ward, where the Guildhall is located, is one of the most deprived in England with 1 in 4 (8,200) of its children living in low income families. Life expectancy for both men and women is lower than England’s average and we have to do as much to support that community as possible.

We also know our building can appear daunting in scale, cost and grandeur and that stops many people coming through our doors. We want to break down any misconceptions that the Guildhall is inaccessible and imposing, and let new audiences experience and interact with the venue.

What are we doing to change this?

Our ‘Get Involved’ Learning and Participation programme was created to inspire, engage and improve the lives of our community. We support local schools by providing facilities and experiences they would usually be unable to access and bridge the gap between STEAM subjects. We have launched vital skills courses, including our Industry and Creative Choices Days, giving children and young adults the guidance to pursue pathways into careers in the arts.

Every year over 4,000 children from local schools come to the Guildhall to experience live music, classical and contemporary, often for the first time.

Our ‘Tickets for the Community’ scheme is also a key focus of our work. The scheme was designed to give socially and economically disadvantaged groups living within the PO postcode area the opportunity to attend live events.

“Getting tickets for events at the Guildhall would be something I could never afford to do. To be able to get out and forget all my troubles and have fun for one night really lifted my spirits and gave me something positive to talk about.”

We also tackle loneliness and isolation in the elderly through singing and musical workshops, which give people in our community the opportunity to meet like minded people and strike up friendships.

Each year our Learning and Participation team have over 12,000 instances of engagement through their work.

Inspire & Sustain: Through our creative programme of artistic and heritage development, our vision is to be a Cultural Hub where communities come together to experience live performances and world class acts. In October we launched a new, innovative Studio space. This multi-arts facility will champion and develop emerging talent in a safe, nurturing and positive environment, giving emerging performers the tools and creative space to grow their artistic abilities. The Studio will also develop an increasingly contemporary and exciting offering, including jazz, blues, world music, children’s theatre, circus and dance, as well as a variety of vocational skills workshops, which will offer industry insight and practical expertise. This new programme will offer affordable, high quality work to excite and inspire our audiences.

Our Business: Not only is Portsmouth Guildhall a premiere music, performance and arts venue but we also provide premium conference and events facilities across our 10 sumptuous rooms. We have a thriving café and catering service and our most recent venture is the launch of a premium equipment hire and outside event production service.

Conferences & Events: We have facilities to suit every need; from the bright and intimate Solent Room for up to 6 people, delegate rooms for up to 40 people, all the way through to several hundred people in the grand surroundings of The Portsmouth, Zodiac, Lord Mayors Banqueting Room, and of course the Main Auditorium, which seats 2000. All are regularly used for conferences, AGMs, expos and launches, weddings and special occasions.

Guildhall Event Services: A high quality equipment hire and event production service, which provides our professional expertise and experience learned over 35 years to external events across the south coast. Through Guildhall Event Services we produce Portsmouth Comic Con - International Festival of Comics, Guildhall Games Fest and Big Mouth Comedy Festival.

We supply equipment and technical support for external festivals, community events, private parties, showcases, award ceremonies, conferences, and festive light switchon’s. Our facilities range from a fully equipped mobile stage, marquee, crowd management furniture, PA and sound solutions, lighting and conference tech as well as banqueting equipment. We also have a fully SIA trained crowd management team ready to work your event.

Café & Catering: Our onsite café, The Square Kitchen, is open preshow and throughout the day to enjoy homemade pizzas, a salad bar and delicious cakes, made all the more appetising when sitting on our patio terrace.

Not only do we cater for our own in-house events but also for outside functions organised by Guildhall Event Services.

Our Development: Guildhall Studio: The first phase of our ambitious programme of Renaissance was completed in Autumn 2018, creating a bright and contemporary performance space with an exciting new programme of works.

In the heart of the city, Guildhall Studio is a cultural hub for the community offering a range of workshops, activity sessions and meeting space.

The Harlequin Room, a tired and under-utilised space was transformed into a modern, multi-arts space with the support of our Naming Rights Supporter, Victorious Festival and that of local businesses and construction, tech and music partners. With the commitment and shared vision of Victorious Festival we have begun delivering a diverse programme of events, provided a vital, fit for purpose space in which community groups can flourish and created a platform for emerging artists to showcase their talent Through media coverage and the dedicated PR and Marketing benefits that come with our Corporate Memberships we have celebrated and promoted the support of our sponsors and partners, securing them extensive branding opportunities with recognition on our public wall of support.

Our Future: Portsmouth Guildhall has stood proudly at the heart of Portsmouth since 1881 and we are now embarking on an ambitious programme of Renaissance to ensure that the venue continues to thrive for the next 130 years, supporting our vision to become one of the country’s leading cultural organisations inspiring, entertaining and transforming lives.

A catalyst for change is here and from 2018 we have begun work on our Renaissance Project: a brave and all-encompassing plan to futureproof the Guildhall. The Renaissance project will create a 21st century performance environment and social space within an existing 19th Century building and allow the Trust to widen its cultural offer. The full programme of renovation and restoration will cost ÂŁ10million and will be completed in several phases allowing us to raise the funds needed and complete the programme without closing the venue for long periods.

These exciting changes will provide new purpose built and accessible amenities.

Aimed at young people 16+ studying music at college or university or those who are serious about developing a career in the music industry, we welcome up to 100 young people from across the area to our Industry Insight Day. Partnered with Platform One College of Music we deliver a series of talks with experienced professionals from across the industry.
