FEATURED RESIDENT

B I R T H D AY S

Doug McDowall moved to his new home in Bermuda Village in December, 2010. He relocated here from Annandale, Virginia. Doug’s father was born in Scotland, near Glasgow. He came to the United States in the early 1920’s for a job in Ohio, where he met his future wife. Doug was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Akron, Ohio. He has one older brother who still lives in Akron. Doug served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963. He was stationed in Connecticut and Maryland. He achieved the rank of Captain serving as a General Medical Officer. Doug was educated at Miami University in Ohio, where he earned his A.B. degree. He received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. While serving in the Army, Doug was asked to work in a pediatric clinic and discovered that, unlike his medical school experience with hospitalized children, he enjoyed the opportunity that the Army gave him – working with children in an outpatient setting. Doug practiced pediatric medicine for most of his career. Doug’s wife, Laura, died in April of 2010. They have two children. Their daughter, Martha Nichols, lives in Winston-Salem, and their son, Andy, lives in Raleigh. Doug has four grandchildren. Doug is already a regular participant in the LifeFit program. In addition to exercise, he enjoys playing Bridge, cultural events and reading. He particularly enjoys reading historical and biographical selections. We look forward to his involvement in our community.

Although duty will surely call, Jack becomes friends with Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and falls for villager Clara (Violante Placido) in this suspense thriller directed by Anton Corbijn.

Exquisite cinematography highlights this biopic about Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (Alessio Boni), an Italian genius whose passionate Baroque paintings reflect his zest for living, which dampens when he becomes entangled with a prostitute named Fillide (Claire Keim). Caravaggio’s arrogance enrages his high-society patrons, but he continues to cavort with his disreputable friends until violence overtakes him. ITALIAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

More that 50 years since they burst forth on the American music scene, the Kingston Trio’s music continues to bring back fond memories and attract new fans. The Junction Trio celebrates the good time music of the 1950s and 1960s – a period of revolutionary change in popular music that created wide diversity of musical styles – ranging from the country songs of Hank Williams and the rockabilly music of Carl Perkins to the classic rock and roll favorites of the Everly Brothers and the folk songs of the Kingston Trio.

Nunsense II ~ The Second Coming

Beethoven, Hindemith, and You!

Nunsense II: The Second Coming takes place six weeks after the sisters have staged their first benefit. The sisters are back presenting a “thank you” show for all the people who supported them in the past. But now, they’re a bit slicker, having been “bitten by the theater bug.” Things get off to a rousing start as the sisters sing Nunsense, the Magic Word, but before long chaos erupts. Two Franciscans come to claim Sister Mary Amnesia (who has won the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes) as one of their own. At the same time, the nuns hear that a talent scout is in the audience to see them strut their stuff. From the riotous bingo game run by Sister Amnesia to the hilarious duet, What Would Elvis Do? to the rousing finale, There’s Only One Way to End Your Prayers and That’s to Say Amen!, this show will have you rolling in the aisles. Please make transportation reservations at the Front Desk by noon Wednesday, May 4. Based on the transportation reservations we will call and reserve seating at the Church Theatre. You may make your ticket purchase at the “theatre” the night of the event.

The Glass Menagerie Saturday, May 21 Depart: 7:15pm (Winston-Salem) Memory plays tricks, and sometimes you have to work as hard at admitting the truth as you did at avoiding it. In Tennessee Williams’ simple eloquent story, Tom Wingfield takes a good look back at the people and events of his life to try to come to terms with his past, present and future. Stepping in and out of the action to talk to us along the way, he looks with fresh eyes at his domineering mother, Amanda, and his shy, reclusive sister, Laura, obsessed with her menagerie of glass animals. As Tom tries to piece together how their lives have shaped his, he begins to understand who they truly are to him – and who he is to them. First produced in 1945, this Williams classic still proves itself a lyrical masterpiece about families and the resilience – and fragility – of their dreams. Residents must purchase tickets in advance by calling 747-1414. Box Office hours are Monday – Friday from noon to 6:00pm.

Please make transportation reservations at the Front Desk by noon Thursday, May 19.
