My grandmother kept a hot pot of coffee in her tiny kitchen every day, all day, for my nine aunts who would drop by regularly for a visit, to deliver an Avon or Mary Kay order, or to pick up one of us kids after an afternoon of Nickelodeon. She would pay me a quarter to comb her hair and I’d stand behind her, folded into the yellow curtains, and take in bits of gossip and concern, jokes and small pieces of wisdom about work and marriage and family, while gently pulling a plastic unbreakable comb through my grandma’s shiny auburn hair, wondering at her thick white roots.
I think of her now during my book clubs and monthly Zoom calls with my girlfriends when we knit and cook together, discuss the books we are devouring and the parents we are worried for, as we tug our cats off our keyboards. These are the places I know to go when I have good news to share or bad news to process. The women in my life have taught me how to take care of myself and of others, how to feel beautiful and how to laugh at myself, how to endure terrible pain and, yes, what it feels like to laugh through tears.
Playwright Robert Harling wrote Steel Magnolias over ten days in 1985 in one of those rare frenzies of genius. Within two years, the play was on Broadway and, by 1989, had become a beloved film. I feel both tender and delighted to welcome you to our production, featuring some of the most iconic actresses I know. We have spent the last month falling in love with these formidable women and growing our own friendships through the sweet lightness of funny stories and clothing swaps, and through the profound rigor of being charged to bring all our expertise to bare to build something extraordinary together. Welcome. We are so glad to transport you back in time to Truvy’s Salon in beautiful Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana. Feel free to pull up a chair, kick back, and have a chat with your neighbor - we’ll be right with you.
Onward,
We are proud to support Pittsburgh Public Theater and their production of Steel Magnolias
You rehearse. You perform. You inspire.
Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is pleased to be the presenting sponsor of Pittsburgh Public Theater’s performance of Steel Magnolias. As a long-time partner of Pittsburgh Public Theater, we appreciate their continued dedication to bringing exceptional artistic and cultural experiences to our region.
Arts and culture positively impact our overall quality of life. Part of our community-minded strategy at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is to partner with non-profit organizations that bring joy, foster well-being, and help build bridges between cultures. Pittsburgh Public Theater is a shining example of that.
At Highmark, we believe in working together to ensure healthier, brighter, stronger futures for all, and Steel Magnolias speaks to the power of facing challenges together, as our greatest strengths are one another. Thank you for joining us to support Pittsburgh Public Theater and ensuring our city’s arts and culture scene continues to thrive. Enjoy the show.
Daniel Onorato Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Highmark HealthSteel Magnolias is special to us - and not only because of the amazing talent on stage. This show also marks the first with our newest leader, Shaunda McDill.
Shaunda joined us in February as our new managing director, bringing decades of experience in arts production and management to your Pittsburgh Public Theater and filling the role after the beloved Lou Castelli’s departure in September 2022. She joins artistic
director Marya Sea Kaminski in leading us closer toward our goal of being a true public theater the region can rely upon and revel in.
“I’m excited to return to regional theater with The Public,” Shaunda said, “and I want to position the theater for another 50 years of artistic excellence.”
Shaunda bridges the gap between what happens on stage and the day-
to-day operations of your Pittsburgh Public Theater. She acts as the liaison between the artistic director and the behind-the-scenes staff, ensuring that the values presented in productions are reflected in our day-to-day operations.
She also maintains the delicate balance between the Public’s identity as an efficiently managed organization and a presenter of worthwhile, impactful theater. Shaunda thinks often about the words of Ben Mordecai: “Too much management will kill the art, and too much art will destroy itself.”
“I see my role as supporting the incredibly meaningful and valuable performances you rely upon year after year at The Public – productions that entertain, bring new perspectives, evoke deep emotions, and move us to be better participants in the world around you,” she said.
Her career spans several cities and decades, including experience as a playwright, performer, director, and producer. While attending Dartmouth College, she studied under the renowned Pittsburgh playwright August Wilson. And coming directly from the Heinz Endowments as Program Officer for Arts and Culture prior to joining The Public, Shaunda is already a well-known face around the Pittsburgh theater scene.
“The role of the managing director is about what’s happening off the field just as much as it is what’s happening on the field,” Shaunda said.
Shaunda sees the performers on stage and the staff working behind the scenes as one cohesive group with a shared goal. With roots in Pittsburgh theater, a broad range of theatrical experience, and an incredible talent for organizational leadership, Shaunda is well equipped to help lead the Public onward.
“I believe the theater is the place that will teach us about and help us reflect upon our engagements with society and what is core to our shared humanity,” she said. “That is the work.”

This performance of Steel Magnolias runs 2 hours and 20 minutes with one 15-minute intermission.
Robert Harling (writer) made his directorial debut with The Evening Star for Paramount, which he also wrote for the screen based on Larry McMurty’s novel. The Evening Star reunited Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson and co-stars Juliette Lewis, Bill Paxton, Scott Wolf, Miranda Richardson, and Marion Ross. The Evening Star is the continuation of one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies of our time, Terms of Endearment. Before launching a successful stage and screenwriting career, Robert graduated from Tulane University School of Law, but instead of taking the bar exam, he opted to become an actor in New York. After years of productive work as an actor in voiceovers and commercials, Harling was inspired to write the highly acclaimed stage play Steel Magnolias, which was based on events from his personal life. Steel Magnolias continues to thrive in theatrical productions throughout the world. Immediately bridging a career from stage to screen, Harling adapted his original play into the popular film of the same title, which starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, and Daryl Hannah. Over the years, Mr. Harling has become a much sought-after screenwriter: other credits, to name a few, include Soapdish, which was based on Harling’s acting experience and starred Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robert Downey Jr., and First Wives Club for Paramount, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton.
