“There is a right theater for every city.”
– Ben Shaktman, founding artistic director of Pittsburgh Public Theater, in the 1979 Saturday Review.
The mission of Pittsburgh Public Theater is to provide artistically diverse theatrical experiences of the highest quality. The Public also strives to serve, challenge, stimulate, and entertain while operating in a fiscally responsible manner.
Founded in 1974 by Joan Apt and Margaret Rieck, Pittsburgh’s flagship theater company enjoyed 24 years on the North Side before moving to the O’Reilly Theater in the heart of the Downtown Cultural District. Known for its eclectic programming, The Public produces a rich canon of masterfully realized classics, contemporary works, musicals, and world premieres. Nearly every show on The O’Reilly stage is designed, built, and produced locally, employing dozens of artists and artisans each year. This season —our 48th on stage — is centered around the values of integrity, relevance, and joy. Pittsburgh Public Theater aims to provide a place where everyone in our region feels welcome to gather, share, and reflect on what it means to be human.
