Hello friends,
I first experienced Justin Emeka bring Shakespeare to life in 2006 with his haunting MacBeth set in the post-Civil War South. It was a powder keg of a production, swollen with ambition, magic, and generational strife.
In many ways, A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Harlem is a joyful antidote to the potent dangers of his MacBeth, as well as to the extreme divisions and racial transgressions we experience every day. In this production, Justin offers us an invitation to pure fun and bold romance, to unbridled mischief and the visceral Divine. He has built a world in our rehearsal room and on The O’Reilly stage that centers young love, conjures African spirituality, and dares to invite us into the beauty and lightness of Black joy. Every time I watch this work, I feel honored and elated to step into this world.
For more than a decade, Justin has explored and elevated how we understand Shakespeare’s relevance for contemporary audiences. Like Peter Brook, Baz Luhrmann, Paula Vogel, and so many inspired artists before him, Justin has created an entry point into these plays and has invited the rest of us to follow him inside the poetry, exuberance, and theatricality of Shakespeare’s canon. He reminds us why these plays are timeless. As audience members, he calls us to lean forward into a new experience of a story that keeps unfolding, not as a dusty history book but as a living, embodied revelation of the world we live in and the love we can share.
For now, we invite you to sit back, make yourself at home, and get ready to experience the wonder of these visions as they appear…
Onward, Marya
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is Shakespeare’s classic comedy first performed in London in the late 1500s. The story was originally set in ancient Athens, but Shakespeare made no real attempt to be historically accurate in his depiction. In many ways, he unapologetically imposed English cultural references that were distinctly un-Athenian — such as Theseus’s title of Duke, choosing English names for many of his characters, and incorporating fairies that originate in English lore. By setting his play thousands of years in the past while endowing it with the contemporary qualities of his times, he emphasized the timeless nature of the subject matter of the play — the fickle and playful nature of love.
In this production, I am using the real and mythical qualities of the Harlem Renaissance as inspiration for my depiction of ancient Athens. The Harlem Renaissance is one of the most significant artistic movements in the history of American culture. It began in the 1920s as Black people migrated to New York in unprecedented numbers, mainly from the American South, but also from the Caribbean, Africa, and other parts of the Diaspora. During the Harlem Renaissance, Black poets, dancers, musicians, and visual artists such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Aaron Douglas embraced what it meant to be African in America. Their work celebrated how
Black culture in America created new artistic forms in the New World by integrating African aesthetics with traditional Western values. As a director, I am very interested in how this process can inform contemporary approaches to the works of William Shakespeare. This production does not exist in any one specific moment in Harlem’s history, as the play does not require that degree of specificity. It is a dream where “Athens” exists as an elusive moment when time converges on itself — ancient and contemporary, young and old, spirit and living, city and nature, African and American. Harlem/Athens is the African melting pot of the New World, and represents the cultural exchange that forged the elusive identity of the African in America. This production also takes special influence from African and Afro-Brazilian dance, such as Capoeira Angola, which is guided by the sounds of the Berimbau, a one-string bowed instrument that is popular in Brazil and has roots throughout parts of Central and West Africa. The instrument was used by griots/ storytellers to help animate their stories and keep their audience engaged. It is my hope this production helps inspire audiences familiar with the play, as well as engage a new generation to see themselves inside the magic of Shakespeare’s classical canon.
