THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND E

ver since I was a young child, I have always loved animals. Our pets were always either strays or adopted from shelters. But it wasn’t until I started volunteering at the Western PA Humane Society several years ago that I realized how many old dogs find themselves in shelters. Whether they were found wandering the streets alone left to fend for themselves,

I stayed with our cat of 21 years when she euthanized. But I never realized that some people do not care for their pets their entire lives.

At the time I found Mabel, I had three dogs, and wasn’t anticipating a fourth. Still, four years ago, I was browsing on Petfinder.com when I came across her. Mabel was a very old beagle, whose description said “full of lumps, bumps, and tumors”.

There was simply no way that I could let this poor dog that had obviously been neglected and abandoned, die alone in a shelter.

She was at an animal shelter in Richland, Ohio, a place that has a great dog warden and amazing volunteers. I offered to adopt Mabel and I drove about 80 miles one evening while a volunteer from Richland also drove about 80 miles and we met halfway. Sweet Mabel had arthritis, heart worms, a gigantic mammary tumor on her belly (probably from not ever being spayed), and was just as sweet as could be despite all of that.

Mabel lived almost 3 more weeks until it was time to say goodbye. She was not going to get better and there was nothing I could do to help her other than do the kind thing and let her pass peacefully. I was very sad in the days that followed, thinking about what kind of life she had up until that point. My vet guessed that she was used as a hunting dog and then abandoned when she became too old to hunt anymore.

Although sad, I was grateful that I could show Mabel love and a family in her last weeks. She became my inspiration for wanting to do dog hospice.

A couple of years later a friend told me about Gracie, a senior beagle at the Beaver County Humane Society. I adopted Gracie and she lived about a year and a half with us. Gracie looked very much like Mabel, and I suspect was in a similar situation. Gracie eventually passed of kidney failure.

Our most recent adoptions/ hospices were Daisy and Maggie. Maggie was also a Beagle who found herself at the western PA humane society in Pittsburgh, where I volunteer. Maggie was surrendered at age 11 and

had a cancerous tumor on her side, the size of a baseball. I adopted Maggie and she spent 13 happy days with us, enjoying the company of our other dogs, roaming through the yard, and sleeping peacefully on her dog bed. Maggie stopped eating after only a few days and caught pneumonia.

We called in a hospice to come and let Maggie pass on her bed where she spent her entire last day.

Daisy was a lab mix who found herself at the Richland, Ohio shelter (where Mabel came from). Years later, the same wonderful volunteers met me halfway again to get Daisy to me. Daisy also had cancer and was not going to live very long. Daisy was so gentle and quiet, and just a wonderful girl. Her cancer spread quickly so, like Maggie, we kept her comfortable until she passed right next to me naturally on the couch. It was the first time I did not have a dog euthanized by a vet or a hospice. My husband and I agreed that we would both love to be able to pass that way, in our home, surrounded by a family that loved them.

Olivia is an 11 yr old dachshund my husband and I adopted a year and a half ago from a local shelter in Pittsburgh. Olivia had an open wound on her side, terrible teeth that needed to be removed, a hernia, and a tumor on her leg. How someone could drop this dog at a shelter is beyond me, but they did due to a “change in lifestyle” according to her paperwork. We adopted Olivia not knowing if her tumor was cancerous or what her outcome would be. She had surgery to remove most of her teeth, heal the wound, and remove the tumor. We saw an oncologist who said it was a stage 2 tumor, meaning it could come back but it might not. We have been lucky so far with no recurrences and Olivia is healthy and happy at our home today.

Many people say to me, “I don’t know how you do that, I couldn’t do it”.

But the truth is, I am so happy that I am given the chance to provide a final place for these deserving dogs to go at the end of their lives. The fact is that we are all going to pass away at some point, and I know I would rather leave this world surrounded by a family and in a home, as opposed to alone in a place that I don’t know such as a shelter. Knowing that I did that for all of these dogs is an amazing feeling. (continued page 5)

We thoroughly enjoyed all the fun at the Pet Expo Piitsburgh November 2-4, at the David Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh.

Thanks to everyone who visited our booth for copies of the magazine and to let us know how much they enjoy it! We also sold PPC t-shirts and baseball caps for the Help Deuce Walk Fund.

The Pet Olympics, Three Rivers Dock Dogs, Ohio Air Dogs, and The National Dachshund Races were all fabulous to watch!

We visited with the local rescue organizations such as the Animal Rescue League, Hello Bully, Grey’s Landing Greyhound Placement, Angel Ridge Animal Rescue, Animal Care and Rescue, Washington Area Humane Society, Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue, Frankie’s Friends Cat Rescue and many more. He is a 10 year old Pit Bull and has a new purpose as a therapy dog. He was rescued from a shelter in Steubenville, Ohio, in the summer of 2011.

We rescue old dogs who have been abandoned or surrendered to shelters. Walter is about 95% deaf. He can only hear REALLY loud noises.

Walter gets along wonderfully with ALL dogs he has met.

I had him trained in only 3 months and he passed Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Therapy Dog International (TDI) tests at the Western PA Humane Society.

I trained him in our backyard (I have another TDI dog so knew what was on the test and how to train him) but I had to use hand signals since he can’t hear commands. The shelter got a small grant from Animal Farm Foundation for any pit bull who passed TDI testing. He was the only pit bull who tested there that day.

Walter and I started doing visits right away to Country Meadows assisted living facility.

We also did a Christmas party for special needs kids for the rotary club in Steubenville last Christmas. There were about 100 people at the party.

Walter also does visits for the Western PA Humane Society, like gift wrapping at the Lynn Walter and some new friends. mall, or any event they ask us to do. He is SO good with kids too. We are going to start doing hospice soon with him as well. Walter also likes to do monthly visits to Bridgeville public library where kids can sign up to read to him. The latest visits we’ve made are to Girl Scout troops in Peters Twp. He is a very special dog who we hope will live at least another couple of years. But for whatever time we have with him we are thankful. Most people do not realize that Pit Bulls are one of the most dedicated dogs and one of the least understood. There are always old dogs in shelters who need you!

olistic veterinary care is in great demand these days. The term “holistic” implies that the entire being; body, mind and spirit, is being addressed. The whole is considered to be greater than the sum of its parts. This concept stands in direct opposition to the Western reductionistic view of life. Modern medicine tends to break systems down into smaller and smaller pieces, reducing them to their basic building blocks to gain an understanding. Often, the modern doctor loses sight of the forest for the trees.

High blood pressure, low blood pressure, allergies - all can be alleviated by the patients’ own bodies. It is considered a case of mind over matter but it proves that our bodies can heal themselves if conditions are right.

The idea of holistic therapies is to produce the right conditions for the body to produce true health.

Of course, fighting disease and strengthening the body are not mutually exclusive approaches to health. For me, holistic pet care embraces the best of what each has to offer. This concept is referred to as integrative medicine. There are some cases for which surgery or antibiotics may be the best option. At the same time acupuncture, chiropractic, herbs or nutritional supplements may be used to speed healing in conjunction with or in place of Western medicine.

Bee Jay was a 4-month-old kitten who was gradually becoming paralyzed in all four legs. He had been to the neurologist and had an MRI scan and spinal tap but the cause of his condition remained a mystery and his paralysis continued Doug Knueven, DVM, CVA, CVC, CVCH to worsen. By the time he came to me he could not stand or control his bowels or bladder. By adjusting his energy with acupuncture he began to improve with the first treatment. Within weeks he was running and playing like a normal kitten.

Integrative Pet Care – The Wave of the Future Holistic medicine takes many forms, but there are common beliefs among these various techniques. First of all, health is considered to be more than simply the absence of disease. It is a state of well-being expressed as a vitality that resists disease. Health is a dynamic balance of internal and external forces. From this point of view, there is a broad spectrum of physical conditions ranging from perfect health to death.

Dis-ease begins as an imbalance, which may go undetected by conventional means. If left untreated at this early stage, detectable disease and possibly death will eventually result. Often, holistic approaches to health can detect problems at the dis-ease state and correct the imbalance before disease sets in.

Holistic therapies embrace the vitalist concept that has been abandoned by conventional medicine. The vitalists believe that there is more to the body than meets the eye. There is a vital energy that animates the flesh. The Chinese call it “Qi,” the Japanese call it “Ki,” the doctors of India call it “Prana,” homeopaths call it the “Vital Force,” and chiropractors call it the “Innate.” It is this life force energy that is the difference between life and death, and it must be nourished to maintain true health.

While conventional medicine fights disease, holistic therapies generally strengthen the body. The body is viewed as containing its own pharmacy. Research bears this fact out. You may have heard of the “placebo effect.” This medical anomaly predicts that 30% of subjects treated with a sugar pill will improve; no matter what the disease is.

The integrative approach to health is the wave of the future, and in my view, is the best option for both pets and people.

ovember invites reflection. Colorful leaves fade and release from supporting branches. Our reflections may flow to remembering beloved pets. Pets who have transitioned home to spirit have released from the support of the Earth and re-entered into our original home in spirit.

These reflections may evoke feelings of recurring sadness or guilt for some. If so, I invite you to consider the choice of an up shift in attitude. Consider hitting your emotional reset button. Can you step inside of your heart and feel gratitude, honoring, forgiveness and even joyfulness? Here’s why.

When it comes to continuity of life, I know three things: 1) Animals are not afraid of death; 2) Animals have a consciousness that exists after they release from their physical body; 3) Once in spirit form, our animal friend’s presence can be with us at the speed of a thought.

Our animal friends are not afraid of death. However, when an end of life scenario presents itself, here’s an awareness tool that might be helpful. Consider asking yourself, in tandem with your intuition, “On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being no quality of life, and 10 being optimal quality of life, where is my animal friend on this scale?” This subject can get a little deep and personal, and each situation is unique, so I’ll leave you with that consideration for now.

Animals have a consciousness that exists after they release from their physical body. They continue to observe us, love us, guide us or can convey happy memories. When we think of them, and invite their presence, they usually “step forward.” I use the term “step forward” to describe the spiritual meeting place between physical and metaphysical realms.

With the speed of a thought, a beloved animal friend can be present and ready to chat. For example, a dog friend of mine, Tess, who transitioned this year, had some happy memories to relay to her two persons, Kathy and Nancy. Tess told Kathy that when Tess transitioned, she was met by Kathy’s dad in spirit. Unknown to me, Kathy confirmed that her dad had passed within the year, and Tess, some months afterwards. From Tess’s account, and all other animals I’ve chatted with in spirit, our animal friends are graciously met by loved ones already there.

Continuity of Life Tess continued. One of her delights was her ability to open doors, literally. Laughter broke out when Kathy and Nancy confirmed this.

When Kathy visited the lawn mower shed, Tess, faithfully, would open the shed doors. Bathroom privacy? No way. Be prepared for the visit from Tess! Kathy said fondly, “Tess never wanted to be left out.”

This November I’m choosing to be grateful for all the memories gathered, love shared and growth provided by the relationships with my animal friends now in spirit. I choose to thank them for the enrichment they provided in our loving exchanges and to relax in the assurance of the continuity of life, ever renewing, ever supported.

REIKI FOR PEOPLE

Reiki–an ancient natural system of healing is believed to help relieve physical discomfort, promote relaxation, release toxins and assist in removing disturbances in the cat or dog that impede good health and a sense of well being. Reiki is increasingly being utilized in shelters and pet clinics as well as by many pet practitioners. The theory is Reiki removes energetic blocks in your pet’s body that may cause any number of negative behavioral, mental, emotional or physical conditions. These include fear, effects of a history of abuse or neglect and arthritis or side effects from medications.

Reiki–an ancient natural system of healing is believed to help relieve physical discomfort, promote relaxation, releases toxins, and assists in removing disturbances in the body that impede good health and a sense of well-being. The theory is Reiki addresses energetic disturbances caused by negative mental states, trauma, physical illness and negative (unpleasant) emotional states.

Judith trained under multiple Reiki Masters, including Senior Reiki Master Teacher William Rand from the International Center for Reiki Training, to achieve Usui and Karuna Reiki Master certifications.

She is a practicing Usui Reiki Master Teacher. Additionally Judith is a Certified Energy Health Practitioner, giving her a broad base of knowledge of the body’s energy matrix and extensive tools to implement in sessions with her clients.

Reiki is an energy based method involving a gentle and non-invasive act of laying hands on the client which is believed to help reduce stress, accelerate healing, and relieve pain. Reiki can also be given from a distance. The practice of healing touch is ancient, as basic as our instincts.

Finding Gratitude

Yet, as one who looks at life energetically, I know that even though we are in despair, we can still maintain our power.

In doing so, we can weather any storm much more easily.

The high winds and pelting rain will still be there, but it is us who determines what we will look like when it is over.

How do we find our solution in the midst of tragedy? Choose it.

I know to many of you this sounds totally bizarre. But life is energy – a duality of positive and negative waves. Where there is negative, there must be positive. And we know from Einstein’s work that reality changes according to one’s perspective.

So even in the midst of pain and suffering, choose to see the positive in the situation. The only way a solution can manifest is if you believe it is there in the first place. All of our advances in society have started

ANIMAL HEALTH WELLNESS PERIODONTAL DISEASE IN DOGS

P

eriodontal disease is an inflammation of some or all of a tooth’s deep supporting structures. Today, it is one of the most common diseases in dogs.

If food particles and bacteria are allowed to accumulate along the dog’s gum line, it can form plaque, which, when combined with saliva and minerals, will transform into calculus. This causes gum irritation and leads to an inflammatory condition called gingivitis. Gingivitis, which is evidenced by a reddening of the gums directly bordering the teeth, is considered to be an early stage of periodontal disease.

After an extended period, the calculus builds up under the gum and separates it from the teeth. Spaces will form under the teeth, fostering bacterial growth. Once this happens, the dog has irreversible periodontal disease. This usually leads to bone loss, tissue destruction and pus formation in the cavities between the gum and teeth.

Periodontal disease affects both cats and dogs of all ages, though it is more common in older animals.

Symptoms and Types Periodontal disease generally begins with the inflammation of one tooth, which may progress if not treated during different stages of the condition.

A dog with stage 1 periodontal disease in one or more of its teeth, for example, will exhibit gingivitis without any separation of the gum and tooth. Stage 2 is characterized by a 25 percent attachment loss, while stage 3 involves a 25 to 30 percent attachment loss. In stage 4, which is also called advanced periodontitis, there is more than a 50 percent attachment loss. In the most advanced stage of the disease, the gum tissue will usually recede and the roots of the teeth will be exposed.

Treatment The specific treatment for periodontal disease depends on how advanced the disease is. In the early stages, treatment is focused on controlling plaque and preventing attachment loss. This is achieved by daily brushing with animal safe toothpaste, professional cleansing, polishing, and the prescribed application of fluoride. Dental Cleanings are performed under general anesthesia.

In stage 2 or 3, the treatment involves the cleansing of the space between the gums and teeth and the application of antibiotic gel to rejuvenate periodontal tissues and decrease the size of the space.

In the more advanced stages, bone replacement procedures, periodontal splinting, and guided tissue regeneration may become necessary.

Living and Management Follow-up treatment for periodontal disease consists mostly of good dental care and weekly, quarterly, or half-yearly checks. Prognosis in dogs will depend on how advanced the disease is, but the best way to minimize the adverse effects caused by the disease is to get an early diagnosis, adequate treatment and proper therapy.

Prevention The best prevention is to maintain good oral hygiene and to regularly brush and clean the dog’s mouth and gums.

Causes Periodontal disease can be caused by a variety of factors. In dogs, the most common causes are the Streptococcus and Actinomyces bacteria. Canine toy breeds with crowded teeth, and dogs that groom themselves, carry a higher risk of acquiring the disease. In addition, poor nutrition will also contribute to the onset of the condition.

Effects of Periodontal Disease • • • • • •

Bad breath Bleeding and oral pain Loss of appetite or dropping food while eating Loose teeth or teeth falling out Bacteria in the blood stream Microscopic damage in kidneys, heart muscle and liver. Studies have shown that dogs with severe periodontal disease have more damage to organs than dogs with less severe disease.

Diagnosis The diagnosis of periodontal disease involves a number of procedures.

If periodontal probing reveals more than two millimeters of distance between the gingivitis-affected gum and tooth, a dog is considered to have some form of periodontal abnormality.

TANKS AND TERRARIUMS SEASONAL CHANGES AND YOUR AQUARIUM – Stephanie Enedy As summer fades into fall and the temperature fluctuates, we need to keep an even better eye on our fishy friends. Temperature changes of even a few degrees can have a major impact on the health and stress level of your fish. There are many variables that can have an impact on your aquarium:

HEATER: Check to make sure that your heater is working properly.

Heaters often don’t run as much in the summer so it is easy to miss a malfunctioning heater. Also, check your wattage! It is important not to run a heater that is underrated for your tank size. This varies by brand and you should check the manufacturer site to be sure. Not enough watts will mean that your heater will be constantly working to fight the room temperature. It may not win!! If it does, it will increase your electricity usage and also age the heater.

LOCATION: The location of your aquarium can have a huge impact on the temperature consistency. Aquariums that are located near a door or window for example will have less stable temperatures.

Cold air seeps in from outside and may cause the temperature to drop.

Aquariums located near a heat source in your home will also have issues regulating their temperature.

WATER CHANGES: Water coming from your tap will be much colder during the fall and winter months. It is extremely important to match the temperature at the tap with the one in your aquarium. Let the water run for a little bit longer to make sure that the temperature has stabilized before adding it to your aquarium.

BONUS TIP:

The chemistry of the water coming out of your tap can fluctuate when the seasons change. Keep an eye on your pH. Let some tap water sit in a cup overnight and test it the next day!

CAT CORNER A happy content cat will position its tail straight up and have a small hook at the end! Her eyes are soft and blink slowly as she looks at you. A stressed cat may show agitation with a swish of the tail and her eyes can look black and large with dilated pupils. There are many reasons why a cat feels stressed and many levels of stress that result in varying degrees of anxiety including trauma responses! Trauma responses are a result of a traumatic event or traumatic lifestyle in the past. This will be the cat that will freeze or try to become smaller when you pet her or who will run and hide every time there is a noise or new person in the house. These behaviors will be extreme in the traumatized pet.

Some stress is situational or a result of some change in the feline’s environment. This lower level of stress is relatively easy to fix while some more severe cases will require the help of a Behavioral Specialist or Veterinarian. In the case of more chronic stress, the cat’s immune system may be compromised over time and it is advisable to treat it.

How You Can Help Your Anxious Cat

Why Might Your Cat Be Stressed?

The following are common causes of anxiety in cats.

Medical Issues: You will always want to rule out any organic cause of fear in cats –Your Veterinarian can do this by examining your cat and/or doing blood work.

Change is difficult for felines. A move or a new person living in the home can cause stress. If you add a new pet to your home or even a new piece of furniture may cause the cat to feel threatened. A common occurrence that causes anxiety in cats is the sudden appearance of a neighboring cat thru the window.

Conflict with Resident Cat: At times when a different resident cat comes into maturity or the problem cat comes into maturity, there will be a conflict as a result of this maturation process. In this event, two cats that previously got along famously can now appear to have disdain for one another! These roommate cats may feel there are not enough litter boxes or feeding stations to meet their needs. In essence, they have now become “two separate groups” of cats.

What You Should not Do:

Separation Anxiety: Dogs are not alone when it comes to this issue.

Cats too can develop separation anxiety and they may become stressed when you are gone. These cats may urinate out of the litter box or mark only when you leave home.

Stress in the environment: Believe it or not, a cat can appear to be stressed because you or your family members are stressed! Our pets are influenced by our moods and the energy we add to environment.

It’s never a good idea to force a cat to do something it seems afraid of. So if you cat is hiding for example, you can lure the cat with food or play but do not pull on the cat or force it to come out. Don’t over compensate by trying too hard to force the fix – try adding the items mentioned or creating the calm needed and see what happens! Let your cat adjust at her own pace, you are simply changing the environment and your behavior so that your pet can feel more comfortable. In the case of cat/cat aggression, don’t force a cat to be with another cat or household pet if they are indicating they don’t want to be. You will want to reintroduce them slowly and in a systematic way.

If you are dealing with a severe problem or your cat is not getting better, call a cat behavior specialist to schedule a consultation. This may be especially necessary with aggression cases!

Cat reaches Senior Years: Stress and anxiety can occur when a pet ages as a result of a loss of hearing or visual acuity. Your senior pet may also show signs of anxiety from an accumulation of years of small stressors and the cumulative effects of such stressors.

What can you do for your Cat Companion?

The following are some changes and additions you can make to help calm your cat.

• Play therapy – Create calm by exercising your cat with play therapy.

This will also stimulate your pet while venting pent up energy!

• More boxes, feeding stations & waters – When cats mature they need more stuff! Add a couple of boxes in different locations if you are able. Add another food and water station.

• Safe places/private spaces, resting places – Make sure each cat has its own special place to hang out. You can create more space for cats by using vertical areas such as dressers or a cat tree. A bed on a shelf works nicely too!

• Lavender and Rosemary Oil, Calming diffuser, Reiki and Flower Essences – There is ample information on the internet about these complimentary means of relaxing your precious little friend.

• Scratch Posts – Cats scent mark with claws. Scratch posts also allow the cat to release tension as an alternative to destroying your furniture.

• Eliminate foods with lots of additives – A good healthy diet is always important when addressing a behavioral issue.

• Eliminate cats looking out or cats looking in the windows – This is necessary when aggression is occurring at the windows • Give your cat attention – Take a few minutes 2-3 times per day to give your pet quality time.

• Provide a calm environment – Remember that your pet does respond to tension in the home • Catnip – For some cats, catnip is stimulating and enjoyable. See if your cat likes it!

The Finicky Cat If only I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard this come out of a customers mouth!

First of all, it’s a good idea to ask your vet whenever you have questions regarding problems that can be health related. Loss of appetite, especially when it happens suddenly, can be related to so many physical conditions that a visit to the vet is a must.

If your vet gives you a clean bill of health, we can offer you a few suggestions.

As you’ve heard me say before, “DON’T FREE FEED!” Free feeding means always having food in the bowl available for them to eat whenever they want. Food will be much more appealing to them if not always available. Remember, they are hunters and would never have food whenever they wanted.

Therefore, they should be put on a feeding schedule of two times per day. A measured amount of food should be put out for twenty minutes and what they don’t eat is part of the next meal. The location should be quiet and comfortable for instance the laundry room. If you have more than one cat consider feeding them in separate rooms. They are solitary eaters and this would also prevent a dominant cat from eating the others food.

Cats can get addicted to foods especially grocery and lower quality brands. The reasons why they get addicted are no different than in humans.

These foods have added CHEMICALS, SUGAR and are packed with carbohydrates. Dry food is sprayed with fats and ANIMAL DIGEST to make it more palatable. The fats they use are typically USED RESTAURANT GREASE.

WHAT IS ANIMAL DIGEST? “a cooked-down broth” which can be made from unspecified parts of unspecified animals.

The animals used can be obtained from almost any source and no control is in place over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included “4-D animals” (DEAD, DISEASED, DISABLED, or DYING prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, PETS EUTHANIZED AT ANIMAL SHELTERS, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on.

Consider making the switch to canned or raw food. Many cats prefer it —and it has health benefits, too. We recommend reversing your thinking of dry food being the primary and wet the secondary.

It should be the opposite and if you can eliminate dry food completely, even better. Canned and raw diets because of their high water content are especially good for cats with Canned and kidney problems, diabetes or a tendency to form crystals raw diets are in their urine. Cats get most especially good for of their water requirements cats with diabetes, from what they eat.

SHORT STORIES Lost, but Found

My wife and I decided to take advantage of a clear, calm day by driving out to Cedar Creek Park. As Providence would have it, we changed our minds en route and chose instead to walk in Mingo Park. A weekday in early spring found only several others along the meandering creek and path between the covered bridges. A few quiet minutes in the crisp air brought us to a curious scene; a black-and-white spotted puppy came down the hillside onto the path, running from one walker to the next. The dog looked up into each face as if to ask, “Can you help me?” The collarless youngster, a female, had obviously become lost or worse: abandoned. She ran to one fellow and he, probably feeling compassion and perhaps a twinge of remorse at not being able to assist, looked our way and called, “Hey mister, you want a nice dog?” I thought of our two cats at home, Cyrano and Fweddy. Even if we wanted a dog…

Anyhow, we agreed to turn the waif in at the park office. Fate found the place closed. Next, we determined to deliver our little charge to the Washington Country Humane Society kennel in Eighty-Four. The pup was gathered up and off we drove. Several minutes into our drive, a lap full of puppy put her head on my shoulder and sighed. She was ours. As it turned out, the shelter people had seen her that morning. She had been brought in but when a donation was requested, the person left with the dog.

Thirty dollars, a free spay coupon and we had adopted a roughly sevenmonths old Black Lab-Dalmation-appearing dog. We took her home, named her Daphne and introduced her to the cats. Beyond some sniffing and purring, there was absolute immediate acceptance. The cats had been adopted as well. In their intuitive feline fashion, they knew.

Twelve years gone now and Daphne, the sole residential survivor, has been a joy. Think of all things pet-wonderful and fill in the blanks. If you have picked up this magazine out of the love for your own pet, then you know. Well, maybe no the little things. On walks, Daphne never goes beyond eyesight. She “counts coup” by barking at tree-bound squirrels but wouldn’t touch a hair. She has stuffed toy squeak-squirrel at home and drops it if it squeaks. She “bumps” the bed to ask if she can jump in with us and won’t unless we say so. Daphne travels in the back of our sport-ute so quietly that we forget she’s there until we approach the park or barn and she whines in anticipation of a walk or a romp with the horse. When asked if she’s hungry she licks, just once. A visit to the vet elicits trembles, but she jumps right on the scale there.

It’s been said by some that animals don’t have souls. If true and a soul is a prerequisite for admission to heaven, then I don’t need to go there. If not true and this old soul passes muster, somewhere up there will be found two robins, six cats, four horses, and, in her time…Daphne. ever been separated from your pet for a while? Then you know this too: It will be a joyous reunion!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A VETERINARY TECHNICIAN – by C. Mader

Sunshine’s Ray of Hope Sunshine was a beautiful 90 pound yellow lab with a bounding personality. Unfortunately I met her at the veterinary surgery office where I worked as a technician. Sunshine had presented with a broken back mid-spine, after being struck by a car.

She also had lost all motor and sensation in her back legs. They strutted out from her body stiffly, in the position she was laying in. Her sad expression was telltale of the serious predicament she was in. Her owner worried anxiously beside her with a gentle hand on her neck, as we acquired the complete history.

The surgeon’s evaluated her and the x-rays and had to give Sunshine’s owner the bad news. She would never regain the use of her back legs or ability to urinate or control her bowels.

Because of her size and the intense nursing care she would require for the rest of her life, they discussed all options, including euthanasia. Sunshine’s owner, a small athletic woman, was abhorred by the idea of putting down Sunshine. She was just running around playing a few hours prior and she still had a lot of spirit in her eyes. It was settled after much discussion to proceed with surgery to stabilize the fractured spine and spare her life.

Sunshine recovered from the surgery wonderfully. She had the greatest attitude during the uncomfortable procedure of catheterizing her to urinate. She tolerated the poking and prodding during her hospital stay. We also had to roll her over to change her bedding and bath her frequently. Her owner visited daily with treats. She bought a crib mattress and protector for home and was preparing to take her soon.

We were even able to find a company who custom made a large cart that fit Sunshine’s back legs into so she could maneuver around with her forelegs. Small carts are common for small breeds such as Dachshunds. A dog Sunshine’s size is more challenging for a cart. What a sight to see Sunshine beaming in her cart, ready to go home!

She is a true Inspiration to overcoming the odds! Her great love for her owner and the desire to please was enough to make us all melt as we said goodbye! *These are actual stories. Names have been changed to protect the owners and pets.

EQUINE AFFAIRS A ‘WHOLE HORSE’ APPROACH FOR HEALTHY HORSE KEEPING PRACTICES

W

ith winter all but upon us, most horse owners believe it’s safe to turn their horses out on grass. I hear time and time again “I like my horses fat” or “they need to be heavy going into winter so they don’t get too thin”… this type of thinking is all wrong! Do we intentionally gain 15 to 20 pounds every fall so that we remain healthy?

Of course with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, most individuals do in fact gain 15 to 20 pounds… and resolve every New Year to diet! What we need to understand is that the fat on the body isn’t BAD fat; it’s the visceral fat that lies inside the abdominal wall, liver, kidneys and intestines-what is termed intra-abdominal fat-that is the enemy. So how do you know if what you’re looking at is good or bad fat? It all comes down to stress; if you are under stress, you will store fat intra-abdominally first, and so will your horse.

First we must understand that insulin is the key to metabolism. Insulin is necessary to regulate the heart rate, which is an average 36 at rest in the trained/healthy horse, and is stored in the fat cells as glucose for use in fight or flight stress responses; it’s the energy that feeds the body. If a horse experiences a lot of stress, the muscle will be broken down by cortisol to become glucose for energy, and if not used, transforms into fat. This process leads to obesity if the body is storing too much fat after each stressor. Fat cells lead to an inflammatory response, which increases cortisol levels. Increased cortisol will lead to insulin resistance if there is too much of it present for a long period of time.

So what causes stress? Everything if you are a horse! The biggest contributor to stress is stall confinement, but it’s the most prevalent practice abound. The weather turns cold and instantly we blanket and confine our horses. Keeping them inside does indeed provide a warmer environment, but in exchange you have taken away the horse’s natural instinct to remain “free.” This innate behavior may not seem important to us, but it can be detrimental to your beloved equine once removed.

Additionally, your horse will consume the three or so flakes you provide for him within an hour or so, leaving him stall bound with nothing to do for over eight hours, on average. Now you may be thinking it’s better to limit his hay so that he loses weight, but this too is contraindicative! Limiting hay will also stress the horse and make them

worsen because all food will be directed into fat cells more readily, due to this limited availability. Horses are designed to forage 18 hours a day; restricting this natural behavior will lead to difficulties within the system. This may not always present as laminitis or insulin resistance, but may also come in the form of ulcers, weaving, cribbing, or any other emotionally unstable behaviorism that can lead to physical presentation biologically. Confinement is not the only precursor to stress. Trailering, training, riding, moving from barn to barn, and even stability within the herd environment can cause stress, and ultimately poor health.

As you can see, it’s not just what we feed, but what we do with our horse that determines their overall health and performance. Adding to the confusion, each breed, as well as each horse, differs significantly to changes in feed or environment. Age and environment also contribute as factors of determination upon the equines overall health. For example, I have two quarter horses that, despite their genetic similarities in breeding, require completely different diets. Both are able to wander outside as they please, and have very little grass in their pasture, so I’ve accounted for that stressor. Both also have first cutting offered free choice, but only up to 15% of their body weight (otherwise they would never move, and only eat!). The one is 12, is fed only one lb. of whole oats spread out over three feeding, and is still a bit overweight, scoring a six on the body conditioning scale. The other is 28, and she requires 6 quarts of feed with the same amount of hay, plus additional timothy pellets and mineral supplements. Same height, same breed, both barefoot, yet their needs are as unique as you or I. Determining what requirements your horse needs can sometimes be overwhelming, so it is important to speak with your veterinarian when determining what feed is best suited for your horse. They will also be able to score your horse properly, and recommend necessary changes when needed. Remember the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?” This could not be truer when considering your horse keeping practices. It is much easier to care for a healthy horse, but there are many things that need to be considered if you are going to be able to keep them that way. There are decades of research available online, but beware what you read! The age of technology has enabled just about everyone access to research that is scientific-based, as well as a plethora of pseudoscience. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference, between good research and poorly designed research, unless you’ve been educated in such research and interpretation of data statistics, so I’m taking the liberty of providing a few other sites that I find quite credible.

I have my horses on my own property, what is the best way to ensure daily movement naturally?

The best environment will contribute to the horse’s natural instincts to move in order to seek out food and water. Natural habitats were originally designed for zoo animals, but this process has since been interpreted and incorporated into natural boarding practices called paddock paradise, a term coined by Jaime Jackson, who is one of the original founders of the barefoot movement. Information on Paddock Paradise designs and benefits can be found in countless numbers on every search engine. Mr. Jackson also has a wonderful book called Founder Prevention & Cure The Natural Way that is by far one of the best I’ve read on this subject.

I’ve covered the feed issues, so what can I do about my training and handling practices?

Be consistent! There are many different training practices out there, and you have to find one that you and your horse are both comfortable with. No matter what trainer you hire, you ultimately are the one who handles the horse most often. The best way to ensure a successful relationship with your horse is to keep things simple, and I’ve found one book that makes it just that! The Ten Golden Rules by Dr. Bruce Nock is easy to understand, and lays the groundwork for every discipline.

y friend Jane purchased a 2 year old Missouri Foxtrotter In 1994 from a breeder and trainer in Clarion, PA. During the colt’s training; I was invited to go along and watch. On one of these training sessions the trainer asked if I’d like to go along on the ride. Art, the trainer offered me a choice of two horses. One was a filly and the other a gelding that he was training for his wife. I liked the looks of the gelding and asked to ride him. I cleaned and saddled him and rode in the enclosed ring just to get to know what to expect. When he started to move I immediately asked “what is he doing?” Art replied “well lady, that’s a fox trot”. From that point I was hooked on the gait. I went back to that farm 3 more times and after my last ride – I knew I had to have that horse. He was a beautiful chocolate color and when I looked at him, his color reminded me of Bailey’s Irish Crème…thus his name became “Bailey”.

Gaits of Gold

I had him trailered home from the farm and settled him at the barn. He was only 4 years old, nervous about his new surroundings and needed a lot of attention. I made it a point to go to the barn twice a day to ride and spend time with him.

Eventually he became well-adjusted to me and seemed to look forward to my visits.

I spent many enjoyable hours riding and caring for Bailey. Most of my friends were riding non-gaited horses at that time and couldn’t understand how I could ride for so many hours without tiring. Of course, it was that beautifully smooth gait that made the difference. One by one, my friends were buying gaited horses.

The years have gone by now, Bailey is now 18. He’s a little slower now but still keeps up with my friends on our trail rides. They’re all riding gaited horses now; apparently the gaited horse trend is here to stay.

Dignified, Comforting After-care For You and Your Pet

s a culture, we are encouraged to plan what will happen to our mortal remains after we die, and to make arrangements for our human family members if need be.

But what about our pets? Often we are caught near or at the end of their life not ever having considered what we would do when they died. We now have many options outside of the backyard burial, and cremation is becoming more popular as a way to keep your pet with you in your home, sprinkle cremains in a favorite place, or even share cremains of a beloved family pet.

While many veterinarians have offered this service for decades, independent pet cremation services offer an alternative you can choose.

I hated to let Moses go, but as Deb explained that she would be the only person to handle Moses, that Moses would stay right there because the crematory unit was in the building, and I could be assured that the cremains I received were Moses, I was tearful but relieved.

Then Deb asked me to choose a color of fabric from her selection into which she would make a little bag to hold the plastic bag of Moses’ cremains, and the color of the silk rose she would attach to the outside of the bag.

This was almost too much for me, but it was the final proof of the love and dignity with which I knew Moses would be cared for. To this day, several cremations later, I am comforted when I know Deb will be there for me when I lose one of my cats.

Founding the Business When Deb Chebatoris founded Chartiers Custom Pet Cremation on January 21, 2005, she had designed something unique in the field of aftercare for pets, and also started an entirely new career of her own caring for families who were experiencing the loss of their beloved pet. Through the experience of losing her own dog, Louie, she knew that professional, personalized care fulfilled a need that many families have to treat their pet with respect at the end of its life. business. A CPA for over twenty years, she was “unfulfilled” and hoping to move into a career where she could have a positive immediate impact on the lives of others. A chance conversation between soccer moms was the spark that started the creation of this business.

At the time a business in the Pittsburgh area facilitated transportation of pets for families wanting to cremate their pets. “We talk so that I understand what your needs are. The arrangements are handled directly with you, the family, and me, the person who will be providing the cremation services for your pet,” Deb said.

Arrangements can be made over the phone, but you can also meet with Deb in person to finalize your pet’s aftercare.

When you call Chartiers Custom Pet Cremation, Deb gives comforting advice and suggestions for families who are generally overcome with grief.

“Families most often don’t even know where to start when they experience the loss of their pet,” she says. Deb helps families think through all the options they have from transporting their pet’s body to ways to memorialize the life they have been privileged to share with their pet.

A unique aspect of Deb’s service is the fabric bag that is returned to the family containing the pet’s cremains. With an inventory of over one hundred fabrics, Deb makes by hand a unique fabric bag for each family’s pet. Most families choose a color that has some meaning to them, like the color of their pet’s collar or a color similar to a favorite blanket. Always willing to provide a highly personalized service, Deb frequently is asked by families to make the fabric bag from an actual blanket, cloth coat or neckerchief that was worn or used by the pet.

“When I place the pet’s cremated remains into the hands of the family member, they are receiving a soft, warm container that frequently is held to the face and kissed,” she said, adding that many families have

there will never be another pet like theirs, so I want to have urns that represent this uniqueness and individuality.”

Pet Loss Support and More Deb sees her role in the pet community as more than one who provides a cremation service. She also hosts two annual events focused on healing the grief of losing a pet: Pet Memorial Sunday in September; and Healing Hearts in February. Her website offers resources including a list of local veterinarians who provide in-home palliative care and euthanasia, and a reading list of books to assist with decision-making and pet loss as well as local resources for grief counseling.

In 2011, upset by a string of pets brought to her who might have been saved if the owners had training in pet first aid, she teamed up with Karen Sable of Pet Emergency Training, LLC to sponsor Pet First Aid Introductory and Certification classes – at no cost to the attendee – at local libraries.

On a walk in her neighborhood in 2012 her two dogs, Wilson and Colby, were attacked by another dog and needed veterinary care.

Beginning in January 2013, Deb will also be sponsoring Dog Aggression classes to help others to understand what to do if you meet an aggressive dog or if your dog is acting aggressive.

“I don’t want to see a pet until it’s lived a good long life,” Deb said.

“It’s always too soon to see them go, but I’d rather help people have healthy pets.”

REMEMBRANCES IN REMEMBRANCE OF: Black Bart Sutkowski, August 1990 – May, 2005 Bart was the first dog in my life that was all ‘mine’, although I quickly learned that I was actually his mom - not an ‘owner’. As a half lab, half golden retriever, he was extremely smart, loyal, and wise. I used to say that if he had thumbs, there would be nothing that he couldn’t do!

I initially wanted to get a dog because I thought it’d be fun to have a hiking companion.

Little did I realize how much more he would give me: all the early morning sunrises that we saw, making the first tracks in the snow in the park after a storm, or having what became my very best friend happily running beside me while we cantered through the woods on horseback. I was so blessed to have had him for nearly 16 years, and although its been 7 years since he passed, I miss him every single day.
