Much admired North Canterbury farm selling for the first time in 110 years One of the original Canterbury runs, comprising 10,800 hectares, Culverden Estate, in North Canterbury, was balloted by the government in 29 parcels in 1908. Alfred Fisher was a young single man from England. His name came out for one of the larger lots, an 844 hectare property with a mix of hills and flats that he named Mandamus Downs.

“First Alf, then Harry, and then Bob, did every development out of income. They were not interested in taking on debt,” she says.

A national transmission line coming through Culverden in the early 1960s gave them a boost.

“To install the line, the state power company had to put in tracks through our backblocks, which made it easier for us to access the whole farm, and helped open it up, especially for topdressing,” says Lorna.

There were also tough times. When Harry died in 1958, son Bob was only 18.

One hundred and ten years later, Bruce Hoban of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Rangiora, is selling the property.

“Mandamus Downs is held in high regard. It has excellent scale, and a good balance of hills, downs and flats,” he says.

in World War One. When Alf died in the early 1940s, Harry took over. Harry’s son, Bob, married Lorna in 1965. She says turning the farm into what it is today took plenty of effort.

Patons have called the North Otago township home since the 1860s, when Graeme’s great grandparents settled there.

Graeme was brought up on the family sheep and cropping property 10 kilometres north of Oamaru. In 2005, he and his wife Viv built a new house on what they reckon is one of the best spots in the district.

Graeme’s father bought what was a small hill block to add to the family farm in the early 1950s.

“He always thought it would be a great place for a house and had that in mind well before we actually built. There were a few challenges. Once we found the spot we wanted, excavation was required. We had to carve out the bank to make sure we had a level platform, which kept a local contractor and digger busy for about a week. Putting power and a road up was also necessary.

Once that was done, it made everything much easier,” says Graeme.

Having made this terrific spot home for 13 years, Graeme and Viv now intend to move on, leaving their wonderfully located lookout available for someone else to enjoy.

Since we moved to organic, we have had fantastic grass production, no bloat and no down cows during the last two years of calving. Our farming philosophy is that stock health comes first. If it wasn’t working for them, we would have switched straight back to a conventional system. However, our cows are happy with everything, so we wouldn’t ever go back.

“Converting a farm to organic production is no longer in the too hard basket. It is not just for what you might call ‘tree
