This one-of-a-kind exhibition combines historical objects with contemporary design, offering a fascinating glimpse into Powell’s life, legacy and unparalleled craftsmanship. Discover the best in modern-day bookbinding with over 20 uniquely bound books by members of Designer Bookbinders who are the leading practitioners in the field today.

One of the best-known artists of his generation, and also highly influential or the next, Michael Craig-Martin (b.1941) has been celebrated worldwide for his conceptual artworks that are instantly recognisable. The Irishborn artist’s creations continue to excite and provoke in equal measure, and as a Goldsmiths Tutor he has been credited as helping foster the Young British Artists who were students at the time.

For over four decades, CraigMartin has been bringing bright and psychedelic colours to his exploration of the relationship between real objects and their depictions, highlighting the transitory nature of objects in 21st century contemporary life. The prints include depictions of headphones, lightbulbs and trainers and invite the viewer to consider the transitory items that fill the world around us.

“The world is changed by the women you push too far.”

(Mark Aspen Reviews)

(Edinburgh Reporter)

It’s 1956 and the global political climate is uncertain. In the UK, Sara Wesker is writing a letter, reflecting on her life filled with struggle and triumph. Back in the day, Sara led the “singing strikers of 1928” to fight for better working conditions for female garment workers in the East End. She was a fierce advocate for workers’ rights, fighting at the iconic Battle of Cable Street, inspiring a generation of playwrights and embroiling herself in a high-profile love affair. But did her love of the cause cost her the love of her life? And was it worth it?

This 5-star reviewed, OffFest nominated play featuring some of the iconic songs sung on Sara’s picket lines, has sold out in New York, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in theatres across the UK.

On International Women’s Day, join us in celebrating the remarkable, yet largely forgotten, life of this trailblazing woman. Her story deserves to be heard — and now it will be.

The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton

Written and performed by Mark Farrelly

Directed by Linda Marlowe 17 April 2025 | 7.30pm-8.30pm (Doors & Bar Open 7.00pm)Standard: £15 | Museum Supporters & Friends: £12

Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope, Howerd’s End, Jarman) presents his riveting, kinetic solo show portraying one of the great English writers of the inter-war years. Patrick Hamilton was a dazzling success in his twenties, producing hit plays Rope (filmed by Hitchcock), Gaslight (which gave us the modern term ‘gaslighting’) and classic novels Hangover Square and The Slaves of Solitude. But Hamilton was also an alcoholic, whose wit darkened as his inner and outer worlds collapsed.

Covering the entire sweep of Hamilton’s thrilling life and writing, The Silence of Snow entertains and challenges, asking: why do so many of us get through life without feeling we ever truly knew another person?

Unmissable! An extraordinary, beyond accomplished piece of writing, performed faultlessly. This is a spellbinding event (Everything Theatre)

“Phenomenal. What a performance! (Sardines Magazine)

“An outstanding piece that crams so much emotion and sheer acting skill into the hour (Weekend Notes)

By Rail

Petersfield is easily accessible by rail, and the Museum and Art Gallery is only a 10-minute walk from Petersfield Station. Follow Lavant Street (opposite the station) exit to the end, and then turn right onto Chapel Street. This takes you out onto The Square. St Peter’s Road is in the opposite corner of The Square, between Café Nero and St Peter’s Church.

By Bicycle

Petersfield is a great starting point for exploring the South Downs by bicycle. We have a range of South Downs leaflets and trails in the Shop to help you start your adventure!
