and ART GALLERY MUSEUM

The days are getting shorter, but Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery’s spectacular programme of events is only getting longer! Michael Craig-Martin: Everyday Objects continues to pop off the walls with his vibrant and captivating pieces, depicting the transitory items that fill the world around us. Waistcoats: A Tailored History showcases our passion for historic fashion in a fascinating look at waistcoats from the 19th century, drawn from our own Fashion and Textiles collection. September brings a change of pace as we bid farewell to Michael Craig-Martin and welcome the photographs of Winifred Joseph in Where the Light Falls: Winifred Joseph’s Rural Archive (30 September – 20 December 2025), where visitors can gain a glimpse into rural life in Petersfield between the two world wars. Our live entertainment bill is as popular as ever, seeing the return of Folksy Theatre in Twelfth Night and Robin Hood, A.D. Scruffs and Vicars Crackpipe, as well as newcomers to the venue, Chris Cleverly, Claude Bourbon, Rob Johnston and many more. There is so much and more going on at Petersfield Museum and Art

Michael Craig-Martin: Everyday Objects until 13 September 2025 Includes Museum and Art Gallery admission.

One of the best-known artists of his generation, and also highly influential or the next, Michael Craig-Martin (b.1941) has been celebrated worldwide for his conceptual artworks that are instantly recognisable. The Irishborn artist’s creations continue to excite and provoke in equal measure, and as a Goldsmiths Tutor he has been credited as helping foster the Young British Artists who were students at the time.

For over four decades, CraigMartin has been bringing colour and line to his exploration of the relationship between real objects and their depictions, highlighting the transitory nature of objects in 21st century contemporary life. The prints include depictions of headphones, lightbulbs and trainers and invite the viewer to consider the transitory items that fill the world around us.

Entry to all exhibitions is included in the admission price and is available to prebook online or at our Welcome Desk located in the Shop. Concession tickets are available.

Waistcoats:

A Tailored History

Until 20 December 2025.

Included in admission price.

A new collection display of nine waistcoats from our Fashion and Textiles Collection gives a glimpse into the variety of styles and patterns of men’s waistcoats from the 19th century. Waistcoats add style, decoration and panache to any suit and express the taste and personality of the wearer. Floral, velvet and patterned, these richly decorated waistcoats are part of a stylish tradition that continues to inspire designers and wearers today.

Where the Light Falls: Winifred Joseph’s Rural Archive

30 September - 20 December 2025

Included in admission price

An intimate and personal glimpse into artistic and rural life in Hampshire during the early 20th century.

This exhibition features modern prints taken from recently rediscovered original negatives belonging to Winifred Joseph, an avid photographer. Taken between 1917 and 1939, she documented her family, friends and the changes of modern life. The photographs were primarily taken around Oakshott Hanger, the cherished country home of East End-based Dr. Harry Roberts. They capture the close bonds and playful antics of those who gathered there, alongside a host of beloved pets and animals.

This exhibition will be a selling show. Visitors will have the opportunity to buy this exhibition’s work straight off the wall, just in time for Christmas!

New to Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery! Enjoy a mesmorising evening of live music with Chris Cleverley.

‘Dream-Folk’ songwriter Chris Cleverley was born under a solstice moon, in the honeysuckle mysticism of a late 80s Midsummer; quiet and curious, saturnine and shy.

A true guitar-man, his breathtaking fingerstyle technique dances above lush ambient soundscapes, drawing comparisons ranging from Lo-fi American Greats, Elliott Smith & Sufjan Stevens to UK guitar royalty John Martyn & Nic Jones; a curious tapestry weaved from the hazy psychedelia of the 60s folk revival and the soulful oblivion of the 90s Pacific Northwest.

The Women of Lockerbie

25 September 2025 | 7:30pm

LynchPin Theatre return to Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery with a performed reading of ‘The Women of Lockerbie’.

‘Pan Am 103 was last seen in a fireball over Scotland.’

Inspired by true events and written in the style of Greek Tragedy, this is a fictionalised account of how the women of a small Scottish town take charge of their own grieving. Deborah Brevoort’s finelytuned play lays bare the range of emotions felt by ordinary people rocked by the disaster.

‘…in its tightly controlled depiction of collective sorrow…(Brevoort’s script) it becomes almost unbearably moving.’
