Nanny Scams Return O

nline advertisements offering lucrative positions in UK and US to young Thai women wanting to be nannies have again turned out to be fake. The scammers, who appear to be based in Nigeria, pose as genuine British and American families with small children requiring professional help. But the aim of the scammers is simply to extract cash from vulnerable Thais or their benefactors. There have been several cases in Pattaya of fraud amounting to hundreds of thousands of baht. Once anyone replies to the online advertisement, including social media, expressing an interest in working as a nanny abroad, the scammers begin their campaign of lies. Typically, they send photos of the family in question and explain in a personal letter that the job is now open and may well include cruises as the father works for an international company. One Pattaya young woman, Khun Noy, said, “The offer seemed too good to be true and I know now that it was. I was told that it would not be necessary for me to obtain a British visa as nannies were a specially exempt category. I was even advised I did not even need to go for interview at the British embassy in Bangkok because of the shortage of nannies and child carers in England.” The correspondence continued for several weeks and included the revelation that Noy would be nanny to a boy aged 3 and a girl aged 4, but the girl would need special attention as she was a spastic. Pictures of the house where the family was based in one of the most expensive parts of London were also sent, together with fake references from the husband’s supposed boss and a mortgage company indicating

the property was worth two million pounds. At last, the scam was revealed when Noy was asked to send 75,000 baht to the supposed nanny agency in London to cover the costs of the application for the exempt category visa and for her return airfare from Thailand. Of course, once the scammers received the cash then all further contact was suspended. Noy said she did not personally have that amount of money but it was donated by her family and a farang friend who wanted to help her get a really good job in UK. Other victims have been even more unfortunate. Another Thai young woman Khun Tee expressed interest in a nanny’s job in the US and was surprised when the scammer sent a forged money order as advance payment to secure her services. The scammer had said the amount would be 30,000 baht but the sum was actually 200,000 baht. Noy was asked to purchase essential items (such as toys) for the trip to US but to send the excess money to a third party – the scammers in fact. She wired the money to the third party only to find out that

the money sent was fraudulent and that the bank required Noy to pay back all of the money, a total of 200,000 baht. In yet another variation, hopeful Thai nannies have even been invited to meet the nanny agency’s representative, usually in Bangkok and based in an accommodation-address office. After being duped by the elaborate setup, several young women have been persuaded to part with their cash to ensure they can get to the UK or the US to start a new life in luxurious surroundings. Often it seems that farang friends or boyfriends have paid the premium in the belief that it will be a sound investment for the future. Police sources are reminding young women that they were being scammed if a family wanted to hire them without checking their background or even without meeting them. Other suspicious features are transacting money over the internet, being asked for banking information or being told to cash a cheque from someone unknown to them. The bottom line is that if a job offer is too good to be true, then it certainly is precisely that.

News Van damaged in confusing attack A man who owed creditors a large sum of money sold his van to a third party to avoid it being repossessed. However, the creditors did not know this and deliberately damaged the vehicle in a nighttime raid. The borrower, Noi, sold his vehicle to Jularat Kawee who had no idea there was a problem. Police said they were trying to track down the creditorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s muscle men and also wanted to interview the man who actually was owed 50,000 baht. This money lender is believed to be a monk.

Beware of fake 1,000-baht notes

Whilst selling sausages and grilled squid, Rangsan Prompibal, 47, was handed a fake 1,000-baht note by a foreigner who took his 900 baht change before making a speedy exit on a motorbike. Rangsan told police he did not immediately notice the forgery (the note was folded in half). Investigators said the chances of finding the fraudulent foreigner were not good as they knew neither his whereabouts nor what he looked like.

Ladyboys attack, rob Russian tour guide

A Russian tour guide complained to police that he had been attacked by two transvestites who had offered him a delightful horizontal experience for a very fair price. However, the two ladyboys reneged on the deal and attacked him with a sharp instrument, stealing his smart phone and 10,300 baht in the confusion. Belorzuko Nioxim, 25, tried to resist the onslaught and needed to visit the Memorial Hospital to be stitched up as a result. The incident occurred on Soi 6, off Pattaya Beach Road.

Currency trader beaten and robbed The owner of a money exchange bureau was hit on the head and then robbed of 600,000 baht as he emerged from his business premises. Sittichok Jaroenpipatsin, 57, was lying under his motorbike and bleeding profusely as police arrived at the location in North Pattaya. Nearby, investigators found a white plastic bag and a steel pipe which they believe was used in the attack which was carried out by at least two perpetrators, according to witnesses.

Financial problems caused suicide

A man who borrowed money to start a motorbike rental business failed to attract enough customers and fell into a deep depression. Akkaratorn Boonprok, 27, was found dead in his apartment. He had left a suicide note expressing his wish

not to be a burden to other people, including his mother. A large number of empty beer bottles were found in the flat. A neighbour alerted police after hearing the sound of a gunshot followed by a thud.

Computers’ changing world You may have noticed that computer stores and malls in Bangkok and Pattaya aren’t as packed with customers as they once were. Pantip Plaza in Bangkok is the obvious case in point. In the old days customers visited these stores to find out how to make their PC a lot more powerful without investing a fortune. That’s where people went to find CD-ROMs, printers and hard drives. Not to mention the latest DVDs sold under the table at knockdown prices. One of the basic problems is that the price of computers and the ancillaries has fallen a great deal, especially in the last year or so. Computer owners no longer need to visit the mall for upgrades, purchases and accessories. These days it is often cheaper simply to discard your old unit and purchase a new one. The boom in the tablet and smartphone markets has ensured that almost every department store stocks whatever you may need. Gone are the days when many young people found employment in computer malls and turned themselves into technical experts, acquiring impressive knowledge in a short time and way, way beyond anything they could have learned in 10 years of compulsory schooling. These days, computer malls are never seeking new staff although expertise is still needed in specialist fields, for example unlocking a smartphone whose owner has forgotten his or her password. The downside to all this is that computer users now have far less choice as the manufacturers increasingly dictate what updates they need. All you need to do is to follow their advice or instructions online. The profits of course go to the manufacturer and are no longer distributed among retailers in the computer malls. Rather a shame. All about death Several readers have asked us to repeat our advice last year about what to do when your nearest and dearest dies in Thailand. Most foreigners who die in Thailand do so in their home or in hospital or, if not, they are taken to Banglamung mortuary soon afterwards. Autopsies in this country are a police discretion, but they are required in all cases where there is not documented evidence they were suffering from a terminal disease. The autopsy itself usually takes place in the Royal Thai Police forensics laboratory in Bangkok and the procedure usually takes three days or less to complete, including the paperwork. Embassies are an integral part of the death procedure here. Before the next of kin can arrange the cremation or transfer of the corpse overseas, a “letter of release” is required from the consular section. This basically confirms that the embassy is satisfied that the next of kin is aware of the fatality and that no disagreements are later likely to surface. Usually, the relatives of the dead person will hire an undertaker to make all the arrangements including coordination with the temple, if relevant. About 95 percent of foreigners who die in Thailand are cremated in the country, with only a small number being transported overseas. Insurance policies vary in their approach. Some specify that they will pay only for the urn to be returned to the first country. Most embassies do not overly concern themselves with wills and last testaments. They see their job as ensuring that the next of kin are made aware, not with the details of any proposed settlement. Although Thailand doesn’t have probate as such, a Thai judge will need to be satisfied that the will is in order before issuing the documentation which allows the sale of property or the opening of bank accounts to go ahead. It will very likely be necessary for beneficiaries to attend court on at least one occasion and to hire a Thai lawyer to cope with the considerable paperwork which is involved. People often ask what happens to the dead body if nobody can be found willing to pay for a cremation. Most embassies will not pay out of their own pocket, although some will pay for a pauper’s cremation. Eventually the Thai authorities have to foot the bill. Either the body will be cremated, probably in a group with other friendless corpses, or the remains may be handed over to a foundation for burial. The Sawangboriboon Foundation in Pattaya, to give an example, has a burial ground in Naklua. Contrary to popular belief, not every corpse ends up in a crematorium for disposal. British passports again From some Asian countries you can apply direct to the UK passport office for a new passport, but not in Thailand. In this country you must deal directly with the Trendy Office in Bangkok which will check that you have the right documents before sending them on to UK. The passport, when ready there, is then sent back to Trendy Office for you (or your agent) to collect. The reason why the procedure in Thailand is different from say Cambodia or the Philippines concerns sheer numbers. There are many more requests for a new passport in Thailand than in all other neighbouring countries combined and many applicants don’t get the documentation quite right. That’s why Trendy Office is the filter for applications here. There are full details on the British embassy Bangkok website. Or you can refer to several visa shops locally who can act on your behalf for an extra fee.

Pattaya Deputy Mayor Weerawat Khakai and civic representatives visited the Darapan village in Soi Khao Talo after hearing complaints that water from a waste drain was polluting the district and

causing a nasty smell. The suggested solution was to erect a new tank to take care of the unwanted water whilst repairing a broken pipe at one of the community’s houses.

Boat steered by drunk-in-charge

Police have arrested an inebriated helmsman after he steered an empty double-decker passenger boat onto Pattaya beach. The 47-seater vessel was stranded for three hours with the engine still running even as tourists fled in panic from the scene. The man seems to have been given

an oral warning, but the incident has sparked concern about the physical and mental condition of those in charge of seagoing transport. It is believed that there are currently no regulations in force to test for alcohol levels in helmsmen as opposed to other ranks.

Korean gambling lovers arrested

Englishman falls from fifth floor

Police raided three separate addresses in Naklua and Nongprue and arrested 11 Korean nationals and several Thais who were using computers to gamble on various sports online. Several million baht is believed to have been the outlay for several days of illegal activity. One of those arrested said he loved to gamble in Thailand as the penalties in South Korea were draconian by comparison. The players apparently used their credit cards to make online payments.

A man who fell from his fifth floor condo room on Jomtien Beach Road was rushed to the Memorial Hospital and is said to be in a critical condition. Brien Strathern, 29, had serious head injuries. Condo staff said that the British tourist had only recently arrived but was heard to be shouting in his apartment even though alone. For the time being, police are working on the theory that he was stressed and may have tried to commit suicide.

Argument about motorbike escalates

Thai driving licences Just a reminder that it is illegal to drive a vehicle in Thailand without either an international licence (valid for three months each visit) or a Thai licence. Don’t believe anyone who tells you differently. A British or Australian licence is not valid. The problem arises if you have an accident and expect the insurance company to pick up the bill. If you don’t have a valid licence they will walk away from you. And that can be very expensive indeed. Incidentally, you need a non-immigrant or oneyear visa in your passport to apply for a Thai licence. Other documents required are your existing licence and a letter from the Thai immigration confirming your address. You may well have to take a written test about the highway code as well as passing some simple eye and emergency stop practical tests. After holding a Thai licence for one year you will be given on expiry a five-year licence. Five years, repeatable, are now the maximum period. Lifetime licences were issued for a while but the practice has now been terminated.

Police rushed to Pratumnak Hill after hearing that a foreigner was lying in the road without any clothes. He had wounds on his head and a woman at a nearby beer bar said that he got into a fight with another foreigner who rented out

motorbikes. It is not known for sure what caused the heated argument but it was likely about money. The man, who has not been identified, was taken to the Memorial Hospital. It is still unclear what had happened to his clothes.

News Government hears Pattaya progress report

Assistant minister of the interior, Vice Admiral Nattapit Sanitwong Na Ayudhya, was the guest at a seminar organized by City Hall authorities to update the military junta on local problems. It was stated that the beaches had been returned to the people with vendors being properly regulated and a break being mandatory every Wednesday. Public transport had been

improved since passengers could now be picked up at the Dolphin circle and transported directly to Walking Street. It was then claimed that city authorities had made a serious attempt to stop illegal construction and to pull down offending buildings. The vice admiral also heard about the canal being built on Beach Road area to deal with floods in the rainy reason.

Clean food good taste

City Hall is again sponsoring a “Clean Food Good Taste” campaign in Pattaya to improve the quality of what is eaten whilst ensuring that cleanliness is given a high profile. Pattaya health officials

are convinced that contaminated food can cause digestive problems and other unwelcome conditions. This year, to date, 71 hotels and one fresh food market have been awarded three-star accreditation.

Allianz Ayudhya returns to PEACH More than 800 delegates of Allianz Ayudhya Assurance PCL gathered at the Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH) for its annual Agencies Leader Seminar. The opening ceremony featured Bryan Smith, president and chief executive officer, Vithaya Charnpanich, chief agency officer, and two successful agency leaders, Natsarisa Thatsiribunchira and Ommatra Mahasethakul. Volunteers argue for morality

Pattaya city council inaugurated a project at Jomtien Garden Hotel to persuade children not to break the law or engage in unseemly activities. About 50 volunteers talked to youngsters

from most Pattaya schools and told them that the world today is full of nastiness which they must do their utmost to combat. The children were urged in particular to honour their parents.

No water shortage in Pattaya

Capital punishment trends Although Thailand still retains the death penalty principle for murder and drug trafficking, the country is effectively in the “abolished in practice” category. It has carried out only two known executions by lethal injection in the last seven years, and none in the last five. Elsewhere, it looks at first glance as if state executions are doing fine. Last June, America’s supreme court upheld Oklahoma’s use of midazolam in spite of evidence that the drug can contribute to an agonized death. The Muslim world – Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia – are executing people with enthusiasm, whilst Egypt and Nigeria are sentencing large numbers to death even though it remains unclear how many sentences will actually be carried out. Saudi Arabia recently advertized for eight new executioners – no experience required – as the number shot or beheaded last year exceeded 100. Not to mention the obscene IS with its beheadings and hurlings-to-death depicted online for propaganda terror purposes. Yet, despite these death penalty hot spots, the global total of executions continues to fall with a trend towards abolition, whether by law or by practice. This year Fiji, Madagascar and Suriname have joined those countries without executions, pushing the total to over 100. Another 40 or so countries retain the death penalty but rarely or never enforce it. The United Nations General Assembly last year voted for a moratorium worldwide by a bigger margin than the last vote in 2007. Even America is actually putting fewer people to death than it was. Last year, it executed 35 and that number is most unlikely to be exceeded this year. Of the 31 states that still have the extreme penalty, half have not executed anyone since 2010. In May 2015 Nebraska passed a law repealing the death penalty, the 19th state to do so and the first conservative one for a long time. The Pew research centre has produced evidence that support for the death penalty in America has slumped from 80 percent to 60 percent in the last 20 years and notes that younger Americans are less keen than their elders. Blacks are solidly against it as are a small majority of Hispanics. There is growing evidence in America that innocent people have been put to death and prisoners on death row have frequently been exonerated. Delays between sentencing and the carrying out of executions may violate the eighth amendment which bars cruel and unusual punishment. The American justice system has repeatedly shown that it is the poor who cannot afford good lawyers who are most likely to be killed by the state for capital offences. Even global leader China is killing fewer of its citizens. The number is a state secret but is thought to be in the region of 2,500 annually, compared with 24,000 in a typical year of the 1980s. It has been publicly conceded in China that the decline in executions has contributed to the shortage of human organs for transplant. Many modernizers in China are embarrassed by China’s position at the head of the ugly world league table. Although most Chinese are still thought to approve of capital punishment for murder, revulsion has grown as the media expose wrongful convictions. Introducing the latest edition of “The Death Penalty: A Worldwide Perspective”, the authors at Oxford university cite a Chinese professor, Zhao Bingzhi, who recently conceded that “abolition is now an inevitable international tide and trend, as well as a signal showing the broadmindedness of civilized countries.” Such voices are expected to grow louder as China strives to be seen as a first world power, both politically and economically. It may be significant that Thailand’s last prison executioner, Chavoret Jaruboon, and the most prolific of Britain’s public hangmen, Albert Pierrepoint, both wrote memoirs in retirement saying that the state murder of people achieved absolutely nothing except to satisfy the instinct for revenge. The road to abolition worldwide is a long and painful process. In spite of the odds in some countries, it is still making progress.

Banglamung district chiefs have reassured the public that there is no immediate threat to local water supplies. Mabprachan reservoir has about 3 million square meters of reserve and releases about 228,000 square meters daily. Extra supplies of the precious fluid are sent by Nong Pla

Lai, Dok Rai and Prajae reservoirs, although Bangpra reservoir no longer supplies Mabprachan as it must serve the needs of the city of Chonburi. There is also a plan to buy water from Sattahip provincial waterworks authority.

Latest threat to Walking Street

Officers of Pattaya City and the provincial land department paid another visit to Walking Street to check the 101 operators who may be renting or claiming to own illegal land. They found that there were now 12 more operators

than the last time they made a check. A full report will be sent to the Chonburi governor after officials have measured the illegal structures, many jutting into the sea. This muchdiscussed issue has been unresolved for over 25 years.

Speedboat holed Sawangboriboon volunteers sprang into action after reports that a small speedboat was sinking in Pattaya bay, about two kilometers from shore. There was a hole in the back of the boat which appeared to be getting bigger as waves crashed against it. Other boats were soon on the rescue scene and managed to transfer 10 passengers to safety. One survivor said that the sea suddenly became rough leading to deep concerns amongst the passengers and crew as sea water flooded the engine room.

Man injured in mystery attack A motorbike rider was knocked unconscious by four men when their car deliberately struck his vehicle. Bystanders said that the unknown assailants then drove their car backwards into him. They even tried to kidnap the victim but gave up on seeing that he was seriously injured. Police took the injured man to Banglamung Hospital; his identity remained unknown at press time. Investigators are working on the assumption that the 20-something year-old man owed them money. The attack occurred on Jomtien Second Road, near Rompo market, and CCTV records are being examined.

Dog beaters freed A group of 10 Cambodian labourers working at a South Pattaya construction site were interviewed by police after complaints that they had hit a dog repeatedly with wooden sticks. In reply, they said their boss had told them to stop the animal from barking and interrupting business transactions in the district. The police decided to take no further action after the dog disappeared from public view.

Too many visits Q: I have been told that I can only come into Thailand by air three times in six months. This is very inconvenient as I am an oil worker in Saudi Arabia and I have a girlfriend in Pattaya. Money is no object for me so I want to come over on a monthly basis just for a few days. Have you any suggestions? A: If you are over 50 you could apply for a retirement visa with a multiple re-entry permit. But there is no need in your case. Entry is not restricted to three times in six months, although it is true the immigration officer can query why an individual is coming so often to Thailand. Your passport will show that each trip lasts only a few days and you will be carrying with you your return air ticket back to Saudi Arabia. Second passport Q: I already hold two British passports because, as a businessman, I have to travel to a lot of countries quickly and the visa regulations are often long-winded. One of the passports is shortly up for renewal and I’m not sure whether I need another letter from my employer or not. A: Yes you do. The letter needs to be on headed company notepaper, state how long you have worked and in what capacity, mention which products or services the company offers and, most importantly, list the countries you are likely to visit over the next year or so, with approximate dates. Second passports these days are given out only when the case is overwhelmingly proved. Another justification Q: I rather like the idea of having two British passports. What are the criteria for awarding them? A: See previous answer. Another possibility is where the applicant visits both Israel and Muslim countries in the course of his business activities. But the process is not straightforward and the checks are very tight. Child passport problem Q: I am a British passport holder and I thought it would be easy to get a British passport for my one-year-old daughter, born in Thailand with a Thai mother. But the passport people in UK are now asking for the birth certificate of the child’s grandparent back in UK. What is all this about? A: From the evidence you sent me, I think the problem may be that you were born in Canada even though you have a British passport. When you are born outside of the UK, this can complicate the issue of whether you can automatically pass on to your children the right to a British passport. There is a way to succeed, but it is very bureaucratic. A good agent will be able to assist you with the paperwork. Overstay fine Q: I will leave Thailand three days after my visa expires. Since I saw in a previous column that the first day is free, I assumed I shall only need to pay for two days, namely 1,000 baht. A: No you will be charged for every day of overstay. The “free” day only comes into play if you leave less than 24 hours after the expiry of your visa.

Models on parade at Pattaya International Fashion Week The Royal Garden Plaza and CentralFestival Pattaya Beach hosted fashion shows in collaboration with the Thai Tourist Board and City Hall. Many male and female models were present, wearing brand-name clothes which included Bossini, Adidas, Puma and Sabina. The events coincided with Pattaya International Week late July under the name of ‘Pattaya Shopping Paradise’. The events attracted a lot of attention from overseas tourists, especially Chinese visitors.

Koh Larn numbers dilemma City Hall is examining ways of restricting the volume of tourist business on Koh Larn because of the environmental damage being inflicted by too many visitors. Sinchai Wattanasartsathorn, spokesman for Pattaya businesses, said that uncontrolled growth is producing serious problems with garbage and waste water. “Pattaya’s tourist image is in danger of being eroded,” he stated. The idyllic island is a mere 7.5 kilometers from the mainland and is popular with day trippers, especially Russians and Chinese. The total area is 5.6 kilometers with 3,000 residents who are mostly involved in the tourist industry. Currently, there are 5,000 daily visitors on weekdays, rising to 8,000 at weekends. The most popular area for sun worshippers is Tawaen beach. It is estimated that 30 tonnes of garbage are produced daily, but only about two-thirds are removed. This leads to an increasing buildup of

rubbish in landfill and public areas, resulting in foul smells and water pollution. Critics say that any plans to limit numbers will be opposed by ferry operators and Koh Larn business providers in their haste to make profits whilst they can. Limiting passenger numbers on ferries is likely to lead to confusion and arguments at Bali Hai pier, according to local sources in the water transport industry.

20 grams spring onions, finely sliced 10 grams coriander leaves, picked 20 grams bean sprouts 10 grams baby spinach leaves 100 ml citrus vinaigrette dressing some vegetable oil

METHOD Coat the lamb loin evenly with the dukkah spice mix. Skewer the cubed zucchini and coat evenly with the dukkah spice mix. Combine in a bowl the fennel, white cabbage, red cabbage, spring onions, coriander leaves, bean sprouts and baby spinach leaves. Add the citrus vinaigrette to the mixed vegetables and combine. In a hot pan sear both the dukkah-crusted lamb loin to medium rare and the zucchini skewer and set aside. Dress the slaw decoratively on a plate. Slice the lamb loin and place next to the slaw. Decorate with the zucchini skewers and serve.

It has emerged, after its total refurbishment, sleek, chic, stylish and modish. Located beachside with panoramic views out over Naklua Bay it is hard to imagine a more idyllic setting. Cabanas grace the beach below, long party tables and comfy seating beckons from the restaurant offering all-day dining options and a spectacular cocktail bar. Mick and I were dining at Coast to meet the new executive chef and to taste his newly devised menu but just a word about the hotel before we start. If you haven’t already visited Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya – be prepared to be impressed! This extraordinary hotel is Pattaya’s first unique, themed hotel and it is a remarkable feat of architectural engineering and innovative design concepts. The hotel is created as two soaring18storey towers connected by sky bridges and set on the fine sands of Wong Amat Beach. The exterior boasts its own jungle, water park, river, waterfalls, water sports, boating, fishing and kayaking while the interior décor is a dwarfing experience of towering wooden columns, rock clad walls and colossal contemporary works of art. restaurants and bars. Acqua is a stylish traditional Italian restaurant, Flames is a beachfront BBQ and grill, Ginger and Lime serves Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine while Zulu features an exclusive family oriented environment complete with breakfast, afternoon tea and canapés, evening cocktails, cordials and chocolates. In fact some 90 chefs keep these speciality restaurants in constant operation. The new Coast Beach Bar and Grill is situated not only adjacent to the extravaganza that is the swimming pool but also overlooking the white sand beach and palm-fringed sea – the perfect spot for lunch thought Mick and I. The shaded wooden terrace offers spacious seating, an open display kitchen, a big cocktail bar and of course those spectacular views. Chef Joachim Kreisel is a German national and has many culinary notches on his belt having spent over 20 years in distinguished kitchens over that time, including Sheraton on the Park in Sydney, and another Sheraton hotel, this time the Incheon Hotel in South Korea. The driving force behind his cuisine is his bucolic childhood in the German countryside where he gathered his passion for a healthy lifestyle and natural, organic food. His dishes reflect this with the use of lots of vegetables, fruit and nuts and the freshest of ingredients.

Coast prides itself on the countless cocktails (and mocktails) that are available. Our welcome drinks were a potent Tiki Zombie (Havana 3-year-old rum, Captain Morgan dark rum, triple sec, orange juice, pineapple juice, and fresh lime juice with a dash of Angostura bitters) and a sweet mocktail of mango puree, honey syrup, yoghurt with a mint leaf garnish (B.212 net). The Tiki Zombie (B.377 net) was served in a unique Balinese tribal mug which David Nowak, their executive assistant manager, had specially imported from the Indonesian island. Our tasting menu kicked off with an amuse-bouche of a German style sausage served with a homemade BBQ sauce and was swiftly followed Chef Joachim Kreisel

by an outstanding log of Norwegian salmon (B.377 net) which had been rubbed in spices and seared to just the right moment with a vibrant accompaniment of snow peas, sweet corn and edamame beans. The other fish dish offered steamed South Pacific snow fish (B.448 net) served with fruity diced mango, baby tomatoes and salad leaves in a light mayo. A pre-main course salad comprised of a Dukkah rubbed lamb loin (an Egyptian blend of nuts, seeds and spices) with coleslaw and courgettes (B.424 net). The freshest of miniature baby spinach leaves with strawberries served with walnuts in a balsamic dressing (B.330 net) freshened the palate before the ensuing course. Appearing next was the lemongrass marinated chicken and mushroom skewers on a bed of creamy Mascarpone fettuccini (B.354 net). A charming dish with bright, vibrant flavouring with a comforting velvety pasta. Throughout the day the woodfired oven is kept busy at Coast and we couldn’t leave without trying a slice of their luxury cream cheese

based pizza topped with deluxe smoked salmon and sprinkled with rocket leaves and capers (B.530 net). For dessert chef had prepared a frozen key lime cake (B.235 net) and a luscious banana caramel parfait (B.235 net). Both were seriously yummy but the key lime cake pipped the post for its cheesecake-like texture and its zing of tart lime. Coast Bar and Grill offers a stunning setting in which to enjoy a mid-morning snack, lunch, cocktails and a superb dinner overlooking the bay of Naklua. Contemporary cuisine with a backdrop of sparkling blue ocean and pristine beach or an inky black sea and a starlit sky come together to make this destination one of the best in Pattaya.

A Taste of Tyrrell’s Wine Dinner Oenophiles and bon vivants gathered at the Royal Grill Room recently for another unique evening of wining and dining extraordinaire. The host for the evening was Parisienne Hugo Acket, sales manager for Vanichwathana. Six varied vintages had been carefully selected to accompany the exquisite food of Executive Chef Walter Thenisch. The evening was graciously presided over by Panga Vathanakul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group, and the event, as always, was much anticipated and enthusiastically attended. Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australian’s eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley

to the Limestone Coast (SA) and Heathcote (VIC). Headed up by fourth generation family member Bruce Tyrell it is the home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named Winery of the Year in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. The proceedings commenced with a cocktail reception in the lounge where the first pouring of the evening, Old Winery Semillon 2012, accompanied a tasty selection of deluxe canapés. The pre-appetiser course presented a salad displaying the extraordinary skills of this kitchen. Canadian lobster had been adeptly

poached and served with a molecular coconut water foam sprinkled with red caviar and accompanied by crisp, young coconut and palm hearts in a lemon dressing. Paired with a Glenbawn Premium Brut sparkling it was a sensational opening number. The elegance of this wine sparkled with flavour and cleanness proving the ideal companion to chef’s most stylish salad. Moore’s Creek Chardonnay 2009 with its restrained use of oak and refreshing stone fruit on the palate married exceedingly well with the next entrée of slow cooked Pacific scallops with sweet corn, chanterelles and lemongrass. Another plate of sheer delight with its delicate textures and graceful essence, the superior variety of mushroom and the creamy sauce made very good friends with the pillows of soft scallop presented on small discs of creamy polenta. An Old Winery Shiraz 2009 served with roasted rib eye was a real eyebrow raiser. Rib eye is a most extravagant cut and the roasting brought out the incredible deep flavours of this premier Australian beef. Served medium rare with asparagus, a superb Parmesan crisp, puddles of soft velvety mashed potatoes and surrounded by a moat of bordelaise sauce, it was a beautiful platter of happiness. The classic French sauce, named after the Bordeaux region of France, is an orgy of gorgeousness; made from dry red wine, bone marrow, butter and shallots – we were in heaven. Its companion, the Old Winery Shiraz with its earthy almost leathery tones, played especially well with the big, hearty tastes of this royal course. Chef Walter had even more foodie buttons to press. The next course again demonstrated his molecular flair with a spiced plum

and Tasmanian double cream brie escorted by a Brokenback Shiraz 2010. The small plums languished on the tranche of cheese but when pierced with a spoon their full fruity flavour oozed out over the brie. Known as the “Queen of Cheeses” its plumy accessories were its crowning glory and the classic Shiraz with its high-quality fruit content and careful oak handling her sceptre. The dessert was a Kodak moment; the trio of confections included a baked chocolate tart topped with banana soufflé, a vanilla raspberry terrine and yoghurt ice cream. The Royal Cliff is famous for its patissiers and they had certainly demonstrated their dexterity with this dessert. The last pouring of the evening took us full circle serving another sparkling

Glutathione is likely to get more attention in the near future. In terms of staying healthy, it is one of the most important molecules in the body. Glutathione is a triple threat to toxins. Glutathione can be injected intravenously to help the liver perform its functions. It is used in people with liver failure to help them handle the toxins building up in their body and it is usually combined with vitamin C to boost up its efficacy. Recently on a Bangkok BTS Skytrain, I looked at the travelers sitting across from me and became aware that five of the seven people were completely entranced while playing with their mobile phones. Everywhere we turn today we are faced with some new technology that is taking over another part of our individual and shared lives. Whether it is a technology that is replacing us ‘more than just humanoids’ or a technology program that is used to replace us...it is all the same, as it seems that we are quickly being replaced and discarded. Just look at what Uber is doing to traditional taxi services worldwide and it is easy to see there is a war going on; a war for survival! Yes, taxi drivers all across Europe are mad as hell, but do you think that they will stop this online trend? There is even a £198 million pound sterling joint legal action against the taxibooking app Uber by taxi drivers in Canada's biggest city, Toronto. Look at the tour and hospitality businesses and the incredible changes they have undergone in the last ten years or so. Try to search the internet for a particular hotel; you can’t find it! You are first barraged by dozens of ‘best price on the internet’ hotel web portals, and if the particular hotel you are looking for is paying that search engine for placement, you might get lucky and find it on the second or third page. Most often, however, you just get lost in the discount-hotel pricing menagerie. Look what is happening to the print industry as newspapers and magazines are being challenged daily by online magazines and news portals. Who needs pharmacies and pharmacists anymore when everything from aspirin to prescription drugs is online for all to purchase for home delivery? Amazon is trying hard to get groceries delivered to your home from online orders. Every major city in the world now has online services offering home delivery of everything from fast food to fine dining from restaurants across town. Let’s face it, from the clothes we wear, the food we eat and the form of transportation we choose, we are replacing one service job after another, and now with the advancement of

drone technology, high-tech is about to ‘shoot the messenger’ as we won’t even need delivery people anymore. It seems that there are no employable services out there that are safe from the menacing advance of technological progress. In fact, to my horror, I very recently clicked open an online copy of Property Report Asia and read the shocking headline: ‘It may be time to say goodbye to traditional property brokers’. Getting rid of traditional property brokers may not be so bad; I have always considered myself to be a progressive property broker— modern thinker that I am--so surely that headline did not pertain to me. Then I read the article to learn that there was a new app from India poised to make real estate brokers obsolete. ALL real estate brokers would become a thing of the past! That was just too much, as now it was my toes that technology was stepping on. These monsters even had their own techsavvy brand name: NoBroker.com. The minds behind NoBroker.com—Akhil Gupta and Amit Agarwal—have created a Web portal designed to directly link home owners with prospective buyers and renters, thus eliminating the need for the traditional real estate broker. Eliminate the need? They might as well have said ‘shoot me in the head.’ I continued reading and thinking that this cannot be good. The article related some drivel about Agarwal and Gupta conceiving the app after they had bad experiences of their own with brokers. Agarwal was quoted as saying, “Our algorithm is designed to keep the broker out of the system. When a new customer registers on our site, the algorithm works in the background and validates the user in around two minutes.” That’s when something about these two ‘online salesmen’ started smelling a little fishy. At this point I was reading with more than a little speculation as the article went on to say that ‘NoBroker stands out from the rest by replacing everything a broker would normally do in the course of a transaction with technology’. How could this possibly be? I asked myself. Then they finally tripped up with their baitand-switch ploy to outmaneuver professional real estate brokers.

House Registration Book What is a House Registration Book? House Registration Book or Tabien Bahn is an official document issued by the Local Municipality or District Office to Thai nationals as well as foreigners owning a residential property in Thailand, as a proof of a person’s permanent legal address and voting district. There are two types of Tabien Bahn: • Blue (Thor.Ror.14) issued to Thai nationals • Yellow (Thor.Ror.13) issued to foreigners who meet specific criteria Does Tabien Bahn confirm who owns the property? The Tabien Bahn may or may not bear the name of the real owner of the house. This document only shows the house number and details of all the people living in a specific property and is not valid as a proof of real estate ownership. It only proves that the property has a registered address in Thailand. Ownership of property is verified by its title deed or Chanote. What is the difference between the House Registration Book for a condominium and that for a house? The House Registration Book for a condominium unit is the same as that for house and so is the application procedure. The only difference is that the type of housing is specified in the former as “Condominium”.

Can a Tabien Bahn be used as mortgage collateral? No, only title deeds can be used as mortgage collateral. Tabien Bahn can simply be used as a proof of address of the person in official registration procedures. What if a person owns more than one property in Thailand? Although a person can own more than one house or condo unit in Thailand, each with a different Tabien Bahn, he or she can have only one principal residence, the Tabien Bahn for which is the only one in which he or she is allowed to have his or her name registered. Can a Tabien Bahn be issued without the house owner’s name on it? Yes, a Tabien Bahn can be issued without the house owner’s name on it. You have the right to change, register another person’s name into it or leave it blank. However, in the event that you need to sell the property and there is no name registered in the Tabien Bahn, you have to pay 3.3 percent business tax on the higher of the selling price and the assessed value unless the property is owned by a private person (not a company) for over five years, in which case you only need to pay 0.5 percent stamp duty and withholding tax, if any. Business tax will not have to be paid as well in cases where the owner’s name appears in the Tabien Bahn for over one year.

Will I be bound to fulfill any legal obligations if my name is registered in a Tabien Bahn? If registered in the Tabien Bahn as the owner, you have to fulfill the following legal obligations: Birth Notifications – when there is a birth that took place in the house, either of the parents or you must inform the local registrar within 15 days. Death Notifications – when somebody dies in the house, you must inform the district office or the police within 24 hours. Moving Notification – when someone moves in or out of the house, you must inform the district office within 15 days. House Number Application – when you plan to demolish an existing house, you must inform the district office and apply for a demolition permit. A construction permit must also be applied for before you can build a new structure. You then must request for a new house number from the district office within 15 days after the construction has been completed. Can a minor be registered in a Tabien Bahn? A minor can be registered in the Tabien Baan as long as a Thai parent or a Thai guardian is registered along with him or her. What if my Tabien Bahn is lost, can I reapply for a new one? Yes, you just need to apply to the district office and they will issue a new Tabien Bahn for a minimal fee. You can either go to police station to secure a police report for lost Tabien Bahn to be submitted to the district office or go directly to the district office. How do I move my name out from my current Tabien Bahn to register to a new Tabien Bahn? The easiest way to have your name transferred out of your current Tabien Bahn to a new Tabien Bahn is to have both done at the district office that has jurisdiction over the house or condo unit you are moving into. This can be done within a day because all the district offices have online connection.

UK Holiday Park Fund wins Major Award

In fund managers’ ongoing attempts to cherry-pick sectors that will offer consistent, worthwhile returns to investors over the recent turbulent years, funds have been set up to specifically avoid the machinations of the world’s stock markets in arenas that enjoy a very strong demand curve, despite the economic conditions. Although stock markets have rallied in recent months, the fact is that only very recently have they surpassed 2007 levels. Simply put, had your money been linked to the main indices all that time, only now would you have got your original investment back, plus a little extra, with nothing there for inflation. Seven years is a long time to wait for your holdings to claw back their original paper value. One of the interesting sectors that has been attracting attention is the holiday park market. Apart from the fact that it’s on a growth path, a significant number of UK local authority pension funds have invested in such funds, along with many big UK corporate household names, as well as individuals. Consequently, we have looked into this area in depth. In fact, one particular fund recently won ‘Alternative Investment Manager of the Year’ at the 2015 European Pensions Awards. In the current financial world we now find ourselves, it’s not often we’ve been able to identify a particular fund that has demonstrated the business acumen required to deliver good investment performance throughout the turbulence and beyond. The UK leisure park business is currently a 3.5 billion GBP per annum business. The purchase/rental of prime sites and significantly upgrading the facilities is one part of the equations. ‘Camp’ sites are being replaced with modern, fixed units and amenities, resulting in both increased capital values and higher income streams. The institutional funding has allowed their operation to put in place an impressive development and acquisition schedule over the coming years, which is likely to ensure the continuing strong performance. Keep in mind, there is no correlation between this fund’s strong performance and the stock markets. Once again, we see the scenario that has proved so successful in recent times: a dominant position in a specific sector that’s enjoying very strong demand, with continually rising turnover/income, away from the vagaries of the markets. As with all property-linked funds, there is always the question of liquidity. The holding of real assets, by its very nature, means they cannot be disposed of overnight. Nonetheless, the liquidity level maintained in this fund is above the industry norm, whilst still providing a very worthwhile return. Despite the lingering sluggishness in some developed economies, there is decent growth in UK PLC and this ‘bull’ period in the UK leisure holiday park market is generating substantial profits. Nonetheless, it will not carry on at this level indefinitely. The industry experts forecast a 10-year window in which the UK’s domestic leisure parks will be brought up to world-class standards. In the meantime, there could well be an opportunity to reap rewards from this increasingly successful business. Youth Focus Tomes or Memes – is it time to scrap textbooks? by Matthew Bolton

Just as Nick Gibb, a schools minister in the current British government, is calling for an increase in the use of textbooks, one of his American counterparts, the director of educational technology at the US Department of Education, Richard Culatta, is advocating the scrapping of all school textbooks within the next five years. This encapsulates a debate that is being pursued, in one form or another, in schools all over the world. Not least at my own school where we already use a mixture of online and textbook resources and teachers hold a wide range of opinions as to where to strike a balance between the two. In a recent interview Mr. Gibb’s summed up his case for a return to textbooks: “Good textbooks provide a structured, wellhoned progression through a subject’s content. They also ease workload for teachers, who

no longer need to spend whole evenings and weekends preparing ad hoc resources.” He also quoted research that suggested that countries with the best exam results use textbooks more than schools in the UK. Meanwhile, Richard Culatta, speaking at an Education Reform summit in London, claimed that textbooks were out-of-date the second they get printed, did not engage pupils or allow personalised learning, and encouraged a “linear” form of learning that was not supported by evidence. His unequivocal advice to schools is to “get rid of textbooks really quickly” suggesting that, in five years’ time, schools on both sides of the Atlantic should aim to have abandoned the use of textbooks altogether. Looking at these two points of view the first thing that occurs to me is how easy it is to make dogmatic assertions when you aren’t

However, I am more persuaded by Culatta’s argument when applied to the area of science and technology where, especially at the Primary level, a hands-on, investigative approach tends to work best. I use a web-based scheme of work for my Primary year 2 science lessons and I find it offers me the flexible, non-linear format I need to plan interesting and engaging activities that, nonetheless, meet the objectives of the National Curriculum. So, in short, whatever the merits of a given resource format, it will, in my opinion, always be the quality of the teaching that is the critical component in successful learning. The school has a long and good tradition of producing athletes who have gone on to compete at national and international level, with several former students representing Thailand at the London 2015 Paralympics. But for many of the current students this recent competition was the first time they have ever participated in any type of sporting activity. Living in the rural areas of the country there are little or no opportunities of a person with

a disability finding any kind of sport they can participate in. But once they are at the school in Pattaya every student is encouraged to find a sport they enjoy. Apart from the sports in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mahathai Games, the school also provides equipment for wheelchair fencing, petanque, wheelchair tennis, archery and pistol shooting, though for shooting students are transported to a professional shooting range. The next Paralympic Games will be in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and the school is hoping to discover a sporting talent who can represent not only Thailand at the Games, but also Pattaya and the vocational school. Local Sports PSC Tropical Golf from BJ’s RACE REPORT

Round 4 of the GP3 Series took place at the historic Hungaroring circuit, close to the city of Budapest, in Hungary on July 24-26. The Thai driver had a steep hill to climb in order to improve on his results of the previous Grand Prix in Silverstone two weeks ago. Sandy, as usual, races for Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, and the Sports Authority of Thailand. Stuvik claimed 17th place in the qualifying on Saturday morning with a time of 1:35.090, 1.061 from the pole position driver Luca Ghiotto who set a 1:34.030, setting himself up for a challenge in the race later that evening. “We’ve improved from our last race but I made some big mistakes on my best lap which cost us 3 tenths. I took an extra day on the sim and we’ve completely changed our mentality from the last round. We’ve still got a ways to go but I feel we’ve now found a good basis to begin our hunt for more points.” Race 1: P22 Unfortunately for Sandy his race would be over before he even reached the grid. Due to a loose ignition switch causing a faulty engine, the GP3 tech team had to bridge a connection to keep the ignition on. Eventually Sandy got out on track and set several fastest laps before the end of the race. Sandy finished in 22nd place. First place was Luca Ghiotto, with Esteban Ocon and Marvin Kirchhofer filling out the podium. Sandy said, “It’s unfortunate what happened, so we took it as a test session to see what we could do with the tire. Our pace was very good but being in clear air makes things easier. Tomorrow we’ll try to have the same pace and gain some positions from the back.” Race 2: P14 The final race of the weekend for Sandy took place on Sunday morning. Starting from the back of the field, Sandy had a lot of work to do in order to climb up the order. The Thai driver had a poor start and was cautious into the first few corners. After a short safety car intervention, Sandy started to make up some positions. Thanks to some good overtakes and a few shunts further up the order, Sandy finished in 14th. First place was Kevin Ceccon, followed by Esteban Ocon and Jimmy Eriksson in second and third positions. Sandy said, “I'm sure it could have gone better today if I was a bit more aggressive at the start of the race, but a top 10 was always going to be very difficult starting from the back.”

Green Valley (Stableford) I like this course, always have, and I have been playing it for a long time. It is like an old item of clothing that one’s wife wants to throw out, but you keep wearing it. We have been playing here for many a year and it is honest and a great day out. Over the years there have been many a change here, usually to allow the players to play from the new clubhouse, and it is still a real walk around and it always seems windy. I remember when what is the second hole now used to be the first and we used to clump down to the start in real spikes. With a downhill drive and the fairway lined with lemongrass it was a bit of a terror. Off line and you were in a very dodgy situation as what was in the lemongrass could be a bit nasty. Also the 18th hole, now a par

4, used to be a par 5 and tested you on your second shot that, if you hit a big drive, was a very testing drive over water; also the 10th that is now a par 5, stroke index 18, used to be a very tough par 4. Changes had to be made I suppose but memories are still there for the old timers. This reminiscing is quite good at times when you realise the option is not very good and many who played with you all those years ago cannot reminisce. Sad but true. Back to the golf on the day the course was in good but wet condition. It was noted that the greens were a bit wet and slow but the rest of it, apart from being windblown in places, played really well. That was if you could keep the ball straight. The early holes played into a strong wind, but at least you got some with the wind

We were able to get away early and arrived back at BJ’s in plenty of time for an early result show. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Landis Brooks with 36 points. PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society Gerd back in form at the Mountain! It was time for our monthly visit to the challenging Mountain Shadow Golf Course and there were four groups signed up to play. The few drops of rain on the way there didn’t worry us as we were confident it would clear up and sure enough after a couple of holes it was fine. We had a late start scheduled for reasons only known to Mountain Shadow but it meant a sleep in for most and as we arrived at the course early we were able to send our first group away 20 minutes early at 11 am. The weather was good and the course in good “nick” with some of the greens very slick so keep it below the hole was the preferred option. The pace of play was quite good considering another golf society was directly ahead of our groups and most of our rounds were finished in a little over four hours.

Welshman Phil Davies once again took the honours and was the winner with 37 points and veteran Ken Hole came second with 35 points. A countback was needed to separate third and fourth as there were two golfers on 33 points and it was your writer, Peter Blackburn (18-point back nine) who grabbed third spot from Wan Makmul (16-point back nine) in fourth place and Dave Edwards finished fifth with 32 points. Local Sports Wayco stymies the Rice-man! Two buses awaited the 20 players eagerly anticipating The Growling Swan’s visit to the popular Greenwood GC. On the buses, banter was somewhat subdued as the traffic snarls on the 331 extended our trip to Greenwood in excess of one hour. At last month’s visit to Greenwood, the greens had been cut too short and were in poor condition. This scribe is happy to report that the maintenance staff have worked tirelessly and although some were still very bumpy, the majority of the greens putted truly and were vastly improved. We played A and B nines, off the yellow tees and although at 6,000 yards, a little short for some, the tricky par 5s sorted many out. It was quite obvious early, that Allain Taddai was in for a torrid day. Allain has been missing in action for

some time and it was great to see him back. Whilst eagerly practicing his chipping at the back of the 1st tee he inadvertently ‘skinnied’ his ball into a dense garden hedge and was unable to retrieve it. After much embarrassment and cajoling from the throng, Allain skulked to the tee box with his confidence at an all-time low. It was also clear the weather was to be perfect when Stu Rifkin had a 100 baht pre-game wager with his caddie. Stu was sure it was going to rain! On course, Khan Speechley and Martin Todd got off to flyers with Khan enjoying a 23-point front nine and Martin one-putting the first five holes. Gordon Clegg and Mark Stapleton continued with their recent form to snap up podium finishes, however, it was Kevin Waycott who emerged through the purple haze to outlast the

Gerd Riedler wins bookends Once again it’s time for the Tropical Golf group to head to Pattaya Country Club to try to win the coveted Monthly Mug, which takes place, hmmm, let’s see – monthly. Coming on the heels of the British Open this was our own version of the event. Instead of winning US $2 million, the winner gets a beer mug which all agree is preferable to the claret jug, or at least more useful. Arriving at PCC in fair weather we were able to tee off on time. It seemed the Tropical golfers were the first of several groups waiting to go out that day, and why not? The course is in good condition and represents good value. Just wondering if any course in the area gives serious combat to the nests of biting red ants? PCC has no more (but no less) of these things, so be careful when you sit down or search for a ball in the tree line. Eighteen golfers were hopeful for the mug, but only one can win! The winner’s name goes first, and so without further ado it was Gerd Riedler (h’cap 9) who took the trophy with a stunning net 69, and is also our first double mug winner! A big toast to Gerd! If you’re hungry for company, you might think that a parrot is the answer. Think again. The parrot's bright colors, beauty and ability to mimic human words too often prompt impulse buying from unsuspecting animal lovers. Yes, parrots are affectionate and cute when young, but as they mature they often become aggressive and bite—sometimes causing serious injury. Equally unappealing is their natural wild instinct to constantly scream loudly and chew indiscriminately. For these and other reasons, it is estimated that most parrots are surrendered and re-homed at least five times before reaching their permanent destinations or before dying prematurely from unintentional or intentional neglect and abuse. Parrots invariably require an enormous amount of attention, care and intellectual stimulation to thrive—about equal to that required by a three-year-old child; most people find themselves unable or

unwilling to devote so much nurturing to a pet. Parrot species that are commonly kept as pets include macaws, amazons, cockatoos, African greys, lovebirds, cockatiels, budgerigars, parakeets, and others. Temperaments and personalities vary even within a species, just as with dog breeds. Even though African grey parrots are thought to be excellent talkers, for example, not all want to talk. Parrots that are bred for pets may be hand-fed or otherwise accustomed to interacting with people from a young age to help ensure they will be tame and trusting. However, even when handfed, parrots revert to biting and aggression during hormonal surges and if mishandled or neglected. Parrots—some of which live for more than 100 years—are not lowmaintenance pets. They require a large cage or aviary and should be

allowed out regularly on a stand or gym; they require feeding, grooming, veterinary care, training, and environmental enrichment through the provision of toys, exercise, and social interaction (with other parrots or humans) for good health. The intelligence of parrots means they are quick to learn tricks and other behaviors—both good and bad—that get them what they want, such as attention or treats. Parrots often do not do well in captivity, causing some parrots to go insane and develop repetitive behaviors, such as swaying or screaming, they become riddled with intense fear, or they self-mutilate. If you can’t put up with all of that for the next century or so, don’t adopt a parrot—no matter what he tells you.

You probably are aware of family health measures, but do you know what issues are important to provide for your pet’s well-being? This Pattaya Today feature may help answer some common questions. In the throes of what seems a particularly-hot hot season this year, be mindful that household pets are especially susceptible to high temperatures. One thing to watch for carefully is dehydration. That should be a consideration all through the year—so ensure there is always clean, fresh water available. But when temperatures climb, it poses more of a problem. To determine if your cat or dog is dehydrated, pull up on the skin between the animal’s shoulder blades. It should spring right back; if it stays tented it is a sign of dehydration. Also be alert for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Such signs include collapse; body temperature of 40 degrees (104 degrees F) or above; bloody diarrhea or vomiting; wobbliness; excessive panting or difficulty breathing; increased heart rate; very red mucous membranes, and increased salivation.

Tansy is our meet-and-greet cat, he is always the first at the gate when people come to visit. He has to have his eyes cleaned every day after surgery that he received when he was just a tiny kitten. His favourite hobby is eating.

This handsome boy was rescued as a kitten with his three brothers and sisters. Sadly he was sick for quite a while and so missed the opportunity to get a new home. As you can see he is grown up now and still waiting to be chosen.

Cat Corner Tip Cat in the Box

If you have a cat, or have even been around a cat, you know they have a propensity for trying to fit into spaces far too small for them. Many a box has been ruined by a cat with a misguided sense of her size. From shoe boxes to refrigerator boxes, cats zero in on cardboard and make it their own. The question is, why? According to a study from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, the answer is stress relief. Researchers took 19 cats new to a shelter and gave boxes to 10. Over a 14-day period, the felines with boxes showed far less stress than the other nine, and they adjusted to the shelter environment far better than their box-less cohorts. Also, in case you haven’t noticed, cats are awful at resolving conflict. If you have more than one cat, pay attention to where they go after a squabble—or to avoid one. Odds are they are escaping to an enclosed space—like a box. Hiding out helps cats ignore whatever is stressing them out. That’s assuming your other cats don’t try to follow into the same box.
