Rebranding Pattaya Tourism
attaya is one of five cities chosen by the coup-installed government to rebrand Thai tourism. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Eastern Seaboard city is to be transformed into a world-class sports and family destination. As regards the four other cities, Bangkok is to be rebranded a World Heritage River Cruise Destination, Nan will become a cyclist-friendly safe-town and haven for the elderly, whilst Phuket will specialize in premium cruises and conventions and exhibitions. Koh Phangan will continue to be a fun place for the young, full-moon parties included. Visitor arrivals in Pattaya peaked in 2013 with more than 10 million people generating 100 billion baht from tourism-related activities. Overall numbers have declined since then by about 30 percent. Particularly hard-hit have been the Russian and European markets, although the decline has been offset to some extent by
the continuing influx of Chinese tourists. Turning Pattaya into a worldclass sports destination is already an aim of the Pattaya City administration. The resort hosts annually the Singha Pattaya Open in tennis as well as the Bike Week Festival and the popular Pattaya Marathon. Last year it played host to the Women’s International Beach Volleyball Championship and has a selection of sports including golf, jet-skiing, yachting and car racing. At a more sedentary level there are chess facilities and, uniquely in Thailand, two international bridge clubs. Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said, “Pattaya stands out as a leader in water sports, hosting several competitions and training camps for national athletes. It is suitable to be developed further with its many facilities, top-class hotels and increasing family-orientated

Police get ready for AEC Senior police from Bangkok organized a meeting at Pattaya police station to give lectures on the implications of the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community which will increase the number of visitors within the 10-country block. Statistics were given on how many foreigners were arrested in Thailand and for which crimes. Common crimes were using fake credit cards, money laundering and illegal drugs. Recent cases were highlighted, in particular the recent arrest of Cameroonian and Nigerian nationals tricking people out of their life savings.
Carried gun in Walking Street A conscripted soldier was seen wearing a firearm on Walking Street before escaping in his Isuzu pickup. The man was later arrested with a female companion on Pattaya-Naklua Road and one .38 handgun and some bullets were also taken into custody. Kitichote Klabsri, 26, told investigators the gun did belong to him but he never threatened anyone with it, adding that the woman in his vehicle was actually his sister. He was charged with carrying a weapon in a public place.
Iranians arrested Prostitute robs for theft at Big C drunk American
Two Iranian tourists were arrested by security staff at Big C North Pattaya after they were seen attempting to tear the barcode off several items. Mohamed Nejaed, 22, and Omid Sqlmahle, 20, were charged with attempting to steal several pairs of socks, underwear, trousers and shirts.
Fleeing man hit by bus Chinese tourists on a coach looked on horrified as a motorbike crashed into the front of their vehicle in North Pattaya. Surasak Kongdee, 36, received several broken bones and was rushed to hospital. Onlookers said the man seemed to be trying to escape from men who were dressed like policemen. However, the mysterious pursuers disappeared as quickly as they had arrived on the scene. Regular police said they were not sure what was going on and would prepare a detailed report.
An American tourist sought the help of the police after taking a woman to his apartment and drinking a copious amount before falling into a deep slumber. Paul Jon Blum, 65, said that when he woke up he was without some clothes and 1,000 US dollars in cash. The CCTV at the residence was in operation but unfortunately the images were blurred. However, it was noticed that the woman in question was rather plump and 160 cm tall, information which will be incorporated into the search.

Sukhumvit woes If you thought there wasn’t any sign of great activity on the Sukhumvit road tunnel, you may be right. An engineer told a frustrated driver in a long queue of traffic near Central Road that 2018 for completion might be somewhat optimistic. Still it’s only a rumour. Ferry service Just when we thought everything was OK for the cross gulf ferry service linking Pattaya and Hua Hin, we learn that Pattaya pier won’t do at present as a terminal point. Bali Hai, which cost 240 million baht when it was updated in 2002, will need dredging, as it’s not deep enough to take a ferry. Pyongyang delights A reader tells us that he has just returned from the North Korean capital – one of those tours where you have to bow before statues – and found the new airport terminal just as luxurious as press reports claim. Gleaming glass everywhere. But the cafeteria was closed with a sign stating “Please wait two more days”. Cambodian hosts Word has it that an increasing number of staff in nightclubs are Cambodian nationals, often short-term as they get only two weeks on arrival at a border post. Some say this is a result of the falling birthrate in Thailand, which started 20 years ago, whilst others say Thais no longer find the entertainment industry an attractive career option.
ethos.” She added that Pattaya had already changed public perceptions that it is merely a nighttime entertainment venue. But some tourism experts say that what the city needs now is a planned sports future. Sanpech Supabowornsthian, president of the Thai Hotels Association Eastern Chapter, said, “In the past events have been organized on an ad hoc basis without any real planning or
coordination between agencies. Now we are working on longer-term plans and intend to publish a calendar of forthcoming sports events at the beginning of each year.” He added that such a strategy would enable potential visitors to time their stay well-ahead with events they most enjoy. City planners agree that better planning is the key to success. Some local destinations, such as Koh Larn, which receives 10,000 visitors
daily, are already oversubscribed. Meanwhile, Pattaya itself is suffering from waste, pollution and traffic congestion. A spokeswoman for City Hall told Pattaya Today, “There are a number of infrastructure improvements underway which may take a year or two to complete and are currently causing some aggravation. But it is only through long term-strategies that we can ensure a sustainable flow of overseas and local visitors.”
Water vending machines to blame Pattaya Deputy Mayor Wuttisak Leamkitjakarn presided over a seminar to discuss the problems of water vending machines which have been damaging people’s health because of the bacteria inside. It was found that excessive bacteria were found in 80 percent of the machines, caused by failure to clean the various parts and to change the filter. The Consumer Protection Division explained to 100 vending machine operators the correct way to service the machines and to avoid poisoning people, however unintentionally.

MICE expands Official figures say that one in ten visitors to Pattaya is now a MICE guest which stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. These are the upmarket tourists and locals who spend a lot of cash in the resort. Usually in the daytime and not at night. Dark side restaurant Good reports about Nong Bistro located on Siam Country Club, Sirisa Building near Soi 13. Closed on Mondays. Wide menu catering for most tastes, Thai or otherwise, with real quality and value for money. Future of fish Bang Saray fishermen are warning that the government crackdown on illegally operating trawlers – occasioned by EU threats to blacklist the country – will cause inflation in the cost of seafood as more and more trawlers are forced into dock. Better order your shrimp fried rice without delay. Hello hello It’s wonderful that Thai cinemas in the area are now publicizing their contact numbers so that you can find out what’s on, where and at what time. The next thing, of course, is to ensure that somebody picks up the phone. Retirement delay People are asking why some retirement visas are processed in 10 minutes while others take up to two weeks. It depends what visa you have. If you are applying with a 30-day or 60-day tourist stamp or visa, then your passport has to be sent to Bangkok Immigration to obtain the non-immigrant type required to start the process. British passports The good news is that British passport renewals, applied for in Thailand, are now taking on average only two weeks to process in UK. This time last year the average time lag between applying and receiving was three months. Opinions expressed in this column are the author’s alone and do not necessarily represent those of Pattaya Today’s management.
Rotary Club Pattaya Chairman Satienpong Kamnon presented scholarships to 70 needy children in local schools, including the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities. Each student received 2,000 baht to help with uniforms, equipment and ancillary costs.
Preparing for AEC Civil servants and other Pattaya workers were told to prepare for the inauguration of the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community. At a conference focusing on such preparation, overseen by Deputy Mayor Weerawat Khakai, participants were advised that visitors from the 10-country free-trade group are about to swell and those serving the public would be well advised to improve their skills.

Princess Chulabhorn Walailak authorized Sopha Panich to host a free lunch for 232 pensioners at Ban Banglamung Social Welfare Development Centre for Older Persons. The centre was established in 1968 and has 98 male and 134 female longterm residents. Chamnanwit Terat, Chonburi vice governor, attended the lunch.
More complaints about foreign guides A seminar for tour guides at the A-One The Royal Cruise Hotel Pattaya turned into a grumbling session focused on foreign guides. Foreigners are often employed because of their ability to speak Russian, Chinese or English, but Thai guides at the seminar pointed out that the farang know very little of Thai culture and history and frequently don’t understand what is going on at the sites they visit. The matter was not resolved.
More mangrove seedlings planted
Some 200 soldiers and Banglamung residents planted trees in a mangrove forest in a project organized by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. The project, involving 26,500 rai of forest, seeks to protect the environment and temper winds from the sea.

News Market owner Monk hides Snap Judgment for eight years surrenders Sexual Confusion Sex is a topic always difficult to handle in Thailand. On the face of things, the country is very open on the subject and international campaigners have sometimes praised the public education here on anti-AIDS awareness and the need to wear condoms. Yet Thailand’s teen pregnancy and HIV infection rates remain worryingly high, although not greatly publicized by the Thai press. When a sexual scandal occurs and reaches the public forum, there is a shocked response from the authorities. In a recent case, a woman was shown on social media sexually serving a foreigner in Pattaya. Senior Bangkok police were here in a jiffy to investigate, but not a lot happened in practice. The bar in question was closed only for 10 days after it was declared that the perpetrators had been asked to leave as soon as their tryst was discovered. The reaction was almost as if this sort of thing was entirely new in the annals of Pattaya. A similar situation occurred a few years ago when a senior visitor from the Thai tourism ministry visited Pattaya and was quoted as saying that she had seen no evidence of prostitution during her stay. It then transpired that the lady in question had been closeted in her five-star hotel for most of her visit and was whisked away to dinner in a closed limousine whose driver was instructed to avoid any “risky” areas. This story was then paired with a very different comment from an embassy official who described Pattaya as a sexual Disneyland. There was then a serious discussion online about which of the two speakers was nearer to the truth. Yes, sex is indeed difficult to handle in Thailand. To take another example, Thailand has a large community of ladyboys and is gay-friendly for the most part. Yet Thai society lacks any understanding of the issues of gender equality. Transgenders in Thailand still face discrimination across the board and gays can still be dismissed from their jobs on the grounds of sexual (dis)orientation. This worry about gender issues also extends to the media. In 2010 the National Film Board banned a movie “Insects in the Backyard” because of the presence of a transgender father and a couple of “pornographic” scenes which were held to be against good moral principles. The movie censors in Thailand also Vaseline-blur images of people smoking or women showing their cleavage, yet people can still watch TV soap operas where rape scenes are by no means unusual. It’s no wonder people become confused about what is acceptable and what is not. Then there was the outcry last year when a government leader suggested that young women who wore bikinis on the beach were actually encouraging unwelcome attention. This sexual confusion in Thailand is difficult to explain. At one level, there is an assumption that good and noble people do not discuss publicly sexual topics and seek to distance themselves if something nasty turns up. At another level, hypocrisy reigns supreme. While sex toys and pornography are illegal in Thailand and shops suspected of housing them raided on a frequent basis, sexual activity is common in almost any massage parlour you choose to mention. This may be true of other countries, but it’s only in Thailand (it seems) that truth and reality are disguised wherever possible. A policeman recently said that go-go bars are mostly OK as the men simply watch the gyrating women or men as they sip their drinks. Oh really? Maybe the refusal to face facts is why sex education in Thailand, in spite of the hype, has been so futile and ineffective. The country has the highest teen pregnancy rate of all the 10 ASEAN states and the second highest in the world. At the last Valentine’s Day, officials suggested teens should celebrate the occasion by having dinner rather than sex. Yet it is surely true that if you keep preaching about virginity, you are very wide of the mark when you deal with social reality on the ground. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about sex in Thailand is that prostitution is actually illegal under a clause of the Entertainments Venue Act of 1960. Although widely ignored, unless underage children are involved, the law sets the scene for the official attitude: prostitution is frowned on and discouraged wherever possible. The fact that Pattaya grew up 50 years ago largely to satisfy the internal needs of US servicemen on rest and recreation was conveniently forgotten, as is the obvious fact that police corruption is very happy to exist in such an environment. Even the current government in Thailand maintains a starchy approach to moral questions. You can’t buy alcohol in the mornings, part of the afternoon and after midnight and beer can’t be available within 300 metres of a school or temple. You would never guess that Thailand’s main industry is offering tourist facilities to foreigners. As long as sex remains a social taboo in Thailand, progress on the matter is a non-starter. If there is to be a serious effort to create better understandings about sex and gender, there must be a lead from top government levels. There is no sign of that coming to pass any time soon.
Police arrested Chockchai Thongyai, 41, for sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl more than eight years ago. The monk was found in a Na Jomtien temple. This was the second attempt to catch the accused who had previously escaped by scaling a wall and fleeing into the night. This time officers took him by surprise in his sleep.
Barcode ripper exposed at Tesco
Two policemen who were assaulted whilst looking for contraband in the Grand Hall Market on Soi Buakhao have agreed to settle the matter out of court. The officers, Lieutenant Colonel Kwanpichai and Lieutenant Rapeepong, were attacked by a group of stallholders. The market owner, 61-year-old Supphakrit, at first denied any involvement but then gave himself up, saying that it was impossible to attribute blame in a confused scuffle. He was initially charged with obstructing a police officer doing his duty but was released after he surrendered.
Fake police collect dues
A man who tried to steal a printer from Tesco Lotus in North Pattaya was apprehended after sales staff became suspicious about the barcode which appeared to have been torn off. Adisorn Srionnoi, 31, paid for several other items at the cashier’s desk, but tried to hide the printer from scanning inspection by ripping off the barcode. He later told police he had behaved stupidly as his plan was full of obvious holes, not least the fact that a store security officer saw him removing the barcode from the package.
Trainee monks hurt in motorbike crash
A motorbike hit the back of a saloon car, throwing off the driver and his pillion passenger both of whom were novice monks. Rescuers at the accident scene found two teen boys, Winai and Songpol, who were training in a Pattaya monastery. They were both taken to hospital to attend to some broken bones. The accident occurred in front of the Toyota Centre in Banglamung. The boys said they had borrowed a friend’s bike for a pleasant joy ride and almost immediately crashed into another vehicle.
A bar girl complained to police that several men posing as police officers had been demanding cash from entertainment venues on Walking Street. Legitimate police officers confirmed that the men were fake officers shaking down bars and clubs and threatening violence. Police said they would bolster patrols on and around Walking Street.
Drunken woman hurt in accident
Locals helped rescue the driver of a turned over car on Soi Paniad Chang, Moo 9. The driver, Chutikarn Sudchantuek, 38, appeared to be inebriated; she was taken to Banglamung Hospital for emergency aid. Witnesses said she had been driving too fast and struck a parked pickup truck causing damage to another motorcycle and her car to turn over.
German attempts suicide Police rushed to Rungland Village in South Pattaya after learning that a 74-year-old German had stabbed himself numerous times with a knife and was seriously wounded. He was taken to the Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment and was later said to be recovering. His Thai companion, Jureeporn, 40, said he had been a news reporter in Germany and had retired to Pattaya only to discover that he had become extremely bored. A complicated factor was the onset of a lung disease which made him feel useless and a burden.

readies for flooding
Pattaya Technical College staff and students have established a Fix It Centre where common household devices which are faulty can be made sound once again. Pattaya officials helped in the clearing of a 500-meter drain pipe which was chock-a-block with garbage as part of its Clean and Clear Community Participation project. The effort was part of the local authority’s policy to prepare for the upcoming rainy season with its attendant flooding problems.

Going to the border Q: Is there a limit on the number of times I can travel to the Cambodian border to renew my visa, or any limit on the number of times I can enter the country by air? In the past I seem to remember it was no more than three times in six months. A: There have been various crackdowns in the past as you say. There is no formal limit at present, but the immigration officer has the right to query the number of times you are entering Thailand. What is discouraged at borders and airports is an indication that a foreigner is “living” in Thailand without obtaining a proper visa for that purpose. So the answer to your question is that it all depends! Length of time Q: Why does it take up to six weeks to renew a British passport in Bangkok when all they have to do is print another one? Surely it doesn’t take a month and a half to check the documentation? A: After you submit your application at Trendy Office in Bangkok, your application is sent to UK for processing and issuing a new passport. It is then sent back to Trendy Office and an officer there will let you know when it has arrived. The waiting time currently is between three and six weeks. Thus it normally takes longer to process a first application than a renewal. Overstay one day Q: My visa is stamped to complete the day before I actually depart from Suvarnabhumi airport. Although we check in before midnight, the flight departs at one in the morning. Is there any need to be concerned? A: No. The relevant point is when you pass through immigration control rather than the time of the flight. In any case, one day overstay in Thailand is usually “gratis” (free) although two days would cost 1,000 baht in fines (2 x 500).
Two passport holder Q: As a businessman I have two UK passports. One of them needs to be replaced as it is full, but that is not the one I traveled into Thailand with. Is this a problem? A: No. But you must take to Trendy Office, Bangkok both your passports. The officer will examine the one you traveled into Thailand with (it doesn’t need renewing you say) but hand it back to you on the spot without cancelling. Don’t forget to prepare your application in full by consulting the passport renewal section of the embassy website.

This time the guest joined dancing the Ramwong (dance in a circle), a popular Thai folk dance. Smiling faces, arms in the air on dance floor. Guests singing along, dancing and enjoying themselves into the late evening. A Friday night to remember: the innovative AEC concept, theme with all the culinary varieties and the premium stage and dance show. Chapeau! Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. What a party!

Mick & Di The Food Lovers
Cape Dara Resort’s Radius Restaurant sparkles with 5-star cuisine Mango Cheesecake
Rack of Lamb
This 3-year-old resort is truly a star destination. Not only does “Dara” mean star the galaxy of star elements convene to make this one of the glitziest hotels in the city. Set on the most southern promontory of the Naklua peninsula, the building rises 26 stories into the sky offering incomparable vistas of Pattaya Bay. The resort boasts a coterie of bars, lounges and restaurants including the Ming Xing Chinese Restaurant and the ground-floor air-conditioned dining section called Raio which connects to the Radius their all-day open air dining outlet. The views from this beautiful space are stunning whether it be during
Yam Salmon Foo
the day with a knockout view over a sparkling sea or at night with the lights of downtown Pattaya shimmering round the bay. It was here that Mick and I were invited to sample the signature dishes of their executive sous-chef. Chef Pong has been an integral part of the resort’s culinary team since its opening days having honed his skills not only at the popular restaurant, Mantra here in Pattaya, but in Bangkok and many far-flung places. The menu is presented on an iPad with photos and descriptions available at a touch. It spans the gamut of daytime eating from sun up to evening and offers a wide-ranging
Thai menu from som tam pla too (B.155) through larb moo to nam prik pla tuna. The western menu is an extensive spread of global cuisine from pasta and pizzas to burgers, premium steaks to snowfish, veal escalope and pork, beef or chicken satay with a dessert menu created to drool over. Once settled at our table we were enjoying a glass of Sauvignon Blanc (B.280) and the inky seascape out across the water to Pattaya’s own Hollywood inspired sign flashing in the distance. We were to be served a selection of Chef Pong’s signature dishes and the first to be sampled was a delightful Thai fusion Yam
Salmon Foo. Traditional catfish had been eschewed for salmon and the result was sensational. A crispy airy nest of fish meat accompanied by its tart, sweet salad of fresh green mango was outstanding. So many textures and flavours bursting in the mouth; the dressing is made from Asia’s most sought-after mango, nam doc mai, for another touch of premium luxury. The next dish to be tasted was their house special Dara Seafood Platter (B.595). A fat butterflyed prawn sat grandly centre stage with a diced mango and cherry tomato salad scattered on the plate, one soft pillowy Hokkaido scallop, an ample curl of smoked salmon, a cone of dressed crab, avocado salsa and green Japanese mayonnaise completed the fishy assemblage. Soft, subtle flavours were to the fore with the fusion sauces adding more textural interplay. Rack of lamb (B.995) followed. Having been marinated in Thai herbs, aromatics and lemon juice, the lamb had taken on another quality; the sometimes intense aroma of the lamb had been eliminated with the marination, leaving behind the best aspects of this popular meat. Served crusted with sage and thyme on a bed of extraordinary Wasabi mashed potato, chef had again delivered a clever synthesis dish to appeal to the Thai palate. Snowfish completed our quartet of main courses. Softly moist and meltingly yielding with its mango seared exterior it was perfection, escorted by creamy mash and baby spinach, it was a superstar dish. After indulging in this superb assortment from the menu we were
not contemplating a dessert but when a mango cheesecake found its way to our table before we knew it our spoons had flown into our hands and we were reeling with delight over the cloud of sweet macaroon, the lusciousness of the cheesecake, the sweetness of the diced mango, the big, succulent strawberry and the cherry on the cake – a luscious, succulent maraschino cherry. Radius is a special restaurant serving special dishes prepared by a very special chef. We’ve been invited to taste the Saturday night seafood bonanza and we will be reporting back, however, our evening at Radius was filled with exciting fusion cuisine, the professionalism of a solo musician, Neng, spectacular views and a charming ambiance – a “starry” night indeed.

Mantra Restaurant & Bar hosts another wine dinner success Mantra Restaurant & Bar has set the benchmark for global cuisine since its opening in 2007. It consistently ranks in the top restaurants of the city and deserves its enviable reputation for serving unswerving quality in an ambiance of contemporary elegance. Chic, stylish and unique, it works hard to maintain its position in Pattaya’s culinary circles. Exclusive culinary (and musical) events take place regularly, especially wine dinners where the skills of their new Executive Chef Maurizio Susan are highlighted in the task of pairing his creative cuisine with the selected premium wines. The award-winning wine company Stonefish International from the Hunter Valley in Australia presented six of their most successful labels to accompany the six-course gourmet menu. Founded in 2000 by Peter Papanikitas, the winery strives to produce wine that exhibits all the attributes that make viniculture in Australia a global phenomenon. Peter is an extremely experienced and a passionate wine enthusiast and his presence at the dinner contributed greatly to its success. The vinous event set sail with canapés and a glass of bubbling Stonefish Cuvee Brut NV in Mantra’s dramatic bar before being seated in the main restaurant. The pouring of this crisp, clean sparkler segued into the initial course of Wagyu beef carpaccio with Vitello tonnato condiments. Prime beef served in gossamer thin slices with traces of tuna strewn with miniature flowers, petals and croutons, it made for a delightful opener. Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Margaret River was then served to pair with salmon mi-cuit. Probably my favourite wine of the evening it felt fresh and lively on the palate with a definite aroma of pears and citrus and made exceptional friends with the salmon. Mi-cuit translates as half-cooked but that fails to convey the exceptional texture
International food and Thai Cuisine Jomtien Bead Road Corner of Soi 8 of the salmon. Although served cold, the fish is anything but raw; its consistency is soft and yielding with a beautiful, almost translucent centre. The next pouring produced a Chardonnay 2013 from the Margaret River to accompany a river prawn salad. An un-oaked clean, crisp wine with aromatic aromas and tart citrus and apple flavours similar to Chablis it was another well received wine. A vibrant salad of asparagus, black olives, edamame beans and tomatoes rested on a bed of pizza bread with a chunky prawn atop. Fresh, lively and appetising it was another delightful mélange of flavours. The epicurean peregrination continued with another winner: this time a cepes risotto to be tasted with a Merlot 2011, Blackwood Valley. Fresh porcini mushrooms and speciality Arborio rice had been stirred with a gentle caress resulting in an umami packed treat. The juicy plum and earthy overtones of this top-notch Merlot married beautifully with the raunchy tastes of the risotto guaranteeing a memorable pairing. It was now the turn of the main event of evening: veal tenderloin with grilled gnocchi and the big River Prawn Salad
Tel : 038 756698, 091 0564911 www.jomtien-boathouse.com
flavours of the Reserve Shiraz 2010 from the Barossa Valley. The Australian veal had been encrusted with black sesame seeds, herbs and breadcrumbs before being roasted and served with a Sherry jus and tiny puddles of gnocchi. Shiraz is Australia’s most popular grape varietal, it is full-bodied with high alcohol and vibrant berry with plum on the nose and palate. As a companion to the veal it worked extremely well complementing the subtle mild beef taste of this tender pale pink meat. A trio of chocolate desserts provided the final sweet element and a Flying Finix Botrytis Semillon the dessert wine. A chocolate shake with a straw escorted a most luxurious dark chocolate mousse, light and airy with a velvety smooth texture it wedded well with a moist, luscious chocolate cake. The mellow, yellow Botrytis Semillon with its aromas of mango and pear schmoozed perfectly with these chocolate delicacies and harmoniously lowered the curtain on another successful evening of wining and dining at Mantra. Mantra puts on these showcase events so well. Attention to detail is the key and Chef Maurizio is to be congratulated on producing such a dazzling menu which synergized seamlessly with the premium wines from Stonefish International. Hotel Promotions Value Package at Amari Pattaya
Subsix Restyled World’s First Underwater Nightclub
Re-emerges as a Subaquatic Playground Feel the tingle of Dom on the tongue, six metres below the waterline. Exchange vows in nature’s own cathedral submerged in the Indian Ocean. Gaze at the thrill of the evening hunt as reef sharks gather to feast on small prey amidst the coralclad architecture, while you dine alongside them on contemporary cuisine. Following the rave reviews of its world-first underwater nightclub, Subsix, PER AQUUM has evolved the pioneering venue into an underwater playground, a creative space which can be transformed into whatever guests imagine it to be – from private Champagne breakfasts to lunchtime celebrations to midnight proposals. Located at PER AQUUM Niyama in the Maldives, Subsix first opened in 2012. The recent redesign by Poole Associates draws inspiration from the aquatic surroundings and sets a very surreal stage for guests to dive beneath the surface and explore their desires. Guests reach Subsix via speedboat, skipping over the reef to its 500-metre offshore location. Upon arrival, the underwater revellers descend a dramatic threetier staircase. Overhead, Italiandesigned abstract chandeliers illuminate the descent like shining coral or white stars sparkling through the sea’s surface. Brancusi cabinetry and mirrors line the path. In the depths of Subsix, the soft anemone fingers of bespoke chairs invite with their deliciously bizarre textured design. Above, thousands of strands of capiz shells drape from the entire expanse of the ceiling in a luxe ode to an undersea kelp forest. Piercing the shells’ undulating waves, a garden of coral-like
chandeliers spike their gleaming branches over wedding brunches and late-night celebrations. Silverpanelled columns throughout the venue draw their inspiration from the ribbed gills of manta rays. In the centre of the room, a huge clam-inspired bar strikes an imposing form, its fibreglass shell glowing with Subsix’s mood lighting that shifts throughout the day from pure white mornings to a lavender dinner setting to late-night blues. In addition to the seating in the clam’s swooping curves, tables and chairs dot the space, with the most coveted seats by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Over 90 coral reef species ply the waters, the dense marine life being attracted by the specially designed reef structures that integrate into the natural reef and enrich the habitat with surfaces for coral and hiding spots for the more reclusive denizens. Parrotfish swim past shoals of Moorish Idols. Moray eels slide through the lagoon. Groupers make goliath appearances amidst the rainbow of butterflyfish and damselfish, while the resident Hawksbill turtle makes occasional visits at the cleaning station for a nibbled spa treatment by the small cleaning fish. Among the many activities hosted by Subsix, marine biologist-led immersions into aquatic life give guests an expert’s insight into the rich environment and its secrets. Other highlighted activities in the restyled venue include subaquatic lunches, gourmet dinners, weddings, hosted events, wine tastings, a weekly Glow Party and DJ nights carrying on the tradition of its birth as a pioneer-of-the-deep club.
In the words of PER AQUUM Niyama’s General Manager Dietmar Koegerl, “Subsix is the closest you can get to the reef without a mask or a wetsuit. Guests fell so in love with the setting from the start that we knew we had hit on something special and had to take it to the next level.” The new avatar of Subsix is now open. The last finishing touches are being completed as of May 2015 with new activities to be innovated over time and in response to valued opinions of PER AQUUM’s jet set guests.

INGENIUS: A CRASH COURSE ON CREATIVITY By TINA SEELIG 9780062020710
Is the ability to creatively tackle problems innate or can it be learned? Like most human traits, both answers are correct. Some people are inherently more innovative than others. But, just like math, or writing, everyone can improve with practice. Tina Seelig, PhD teaches creativity every day in her courses on innovation at Stanford School of Engineering. After ten years of experience, she confidently asserts that not only can creativity be taught but that there are a clear set of tools, skills and approaches that can unlock anyone’s creative potential.

Inside the new Ford Fiesta is almost as dramatic on the outside: boldly shaped surfaces contrasting piano black and aluminum. Property International REALTOR Conference 2015!
Southeast Asia is about to make history within the international real estate arena as it hosts a world-class, ground-breaking event in Manila July 27 to 30. The world’s largest professional organization, with more than 1.1 million members throughout the United States and worldwide, the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) will be the strategic partner for the International Realtor Conference—the first ever outside the United States. Founded in 1908, the NAR has been supporting the business of real estate by strengthening the economic and legal conditions necessary to protect and promote property ownership throughout the United States; it is now reaching out to support the growing interest in property ownership throughout the world. This being the NAR’s primary goal is what has made the organization an important player in both US and world government regulatory bodies as the property market expands rapidly with globalization. One of the primary components of this month’s conference at Manila’s Nobu Hotel is a closed-door Regional Leadership Summit on July 28. It will be attended by all leaders of NAR’s cooperating associations throughout ASEAN, and already is attracting NAR bilateral partners from abroad as well. This Summit will target the establishment of an ASEAN partnership of real estate professionals toward expanding the NAR regional community. To help support and strengthen that ASEAN bond and partnership, the National Association of Realtors is sending a number of its very top
by Clayton Wade Managing Director
leaders, including 2017 NAR President Bill Brown and Treasurer Mike McGrew. Both will attend the Regional Leadership Summit as well as the conference. The NAR, well known for having the highest professional standards in the international real estate industry, is responsible for having drafted the profession’s very first enforceable code of ethics. Since its founding more than 100 years ago, the NAR has seen itself and participated as a global organization that has actively represented not only American brokers but also brokers in Mexico, Canada, and now in the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and all of the ASEAN region. As a founding member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the NAR is a non-government member of that prestigious organization. The Chicago-based trade group has its sights set on grooming the ASEAN region to be its ‘gateway into Asia’ as the middleclass boom here that already has stimulated tremendous growth in home ownership is certain to further generate the demand for real estate education and better industry standards. The National Association of Realtors has bilateral partnerships with 82 real estate organizations in 65 countries; the Philippines are counted as one of the strongest partners,

with Thailand at their side. We here in Thailand are very excited to be supporting the Philippines and the NAR’s IRC Conference host/organizers of the event. This prestigious event was the brainchild of Shonee Henry who recently commented: “I saw the need to bring all of our NAR partners together to give them the opportunity to meet and have a platform to coalesce and collaborate as the region welcomes in the AEC whose ASEAN Charter very soon comes into effect.” You may ask yourself just what does this International Realtor Conference offer real estate professionals here in Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard. The answer to that question may surprise you as some of the scheduled topics are sure to benefit our industry locally. The NAR’s Thailand bilateral partner association is our Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association (RESAM), of which I am a vice president and head of the International Marketing Committee. We have more than 120 broker and development company members. Our current president, Somsak Chutisilp, will address the Regional Leadership Summit on the topic of standard licensing of real estate professionals in Southeast Asia. In essence, he intends to point out to participants that because ASEAN countries have grown so quickly, and most of our real estate industries have virtually exploded, “many of our countries do not have any national real estate licensing for individual agents or agencies. “Would it not be of interest for us to consider and discuss establishing an ASEAN examination and licensing process and thus facilitate the need for real estate licensing to all our ASEAN nations through a central ASEAN Real Estate Board?”
Our very special thanks to Clayton Wade, managing director of Pattaya’s Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., for preparing this Pattaya Today column. Clayton Wade is managing director of Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., the Eastern Seaboard’s leader in exclusive property sales and rentals, and managing director of Premier Land and Development Co., Ltd. Clayton Wade has been running Premier Homes with his wife, Khun Supap, for more than 19 years. He has been in the real estate industry going on 29 years, having started his career in the United States where he was licensed and practiced both real estate sales and property management in Seattle, Washington.
Wade is a Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) and a CIPS certification instructor with the National Association of Realtors (NAR) in the United States and a current board member with the Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association of Thailand. He also is a council member with the Gerson Lehrman Group, the New York-based international research and consulting firm, and is a registered consultant with the Coleman Research Group in Hong Kong. He has been a national panel judge with the Thailand Property Awards for many years. Having done business successfully in the Eastern Seaboard/Pattaya area for nearly 20 years, Clayton Wade is known throughout the AsiaPacific region for his public speaking and television presentations as well as having written regularly for
Serving as a second Thailand bilateral partner will be the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) headed by Samma Kitisin. He, too, will emphasize “incredible growth” in the ASEAN property sector and “a great need for comprehensive real estate information from our neighboring countries as we are all looking to do business more and more with each other and in each other's countries. Would it not be a very good idea for us ASEAN countries to start centralizing our real estate research, statistics and development information by all contributing to a central ASEAN Real Estate Information body online that is created and run by our combined countries?" As you can see, we have some very interesting and pertinent subjects scheduled for discussion and implementation at this great and pioneering real estate industry event. It is almost certain that this conference will result in an ASEAN real estate body with bilateral members working together to better promote the goals and objectives of the NAR right here in our ASEAN region. Furthermore, I for one am betting on the creation of a comprehensive ASEAN real estate education, examination and licensing body. Wouldn’t that be great? Wouldn’t all in Thailand’s real estate industry benefit from an ASEAN real estate body that is cultivating better, smarter and more ethical real estate professionals and standards with a licensing process to identify those that are qualified? If interested in attending this exciting event, feel free to contact me directly at 081-634-2915, or by email at: firstname.lastname@example.org. This is not 2012 and Europe has put in place significant safeguards should the Greeks depart from the Euro. Also, it’s not as though Greece is the only country that has gone through ‘austerity’ pain. In fact, amongst others, Ireland, Portugal and Spain have also endured stringent economic constraints and are at varying levels of recovery, achieved by addressing the issues. Hence, as we speak, the chance of contagion, should Greece leave the single currency is, in our view, fairly minimal. It is only Greece that has failed to implement the meaningful reforms required and tackle other major issues such as tax collection and corruption. In consequence, their economy has nose-dived, even with the massive bailouts they have received. The truth is that when Greece joined the Euro, the country’s finances were never properly examined and it became clear some years later that the figures Greece was submitting to Europe were, as the BBC said, ‘massaged’. Throughout recent events, the sheer amount of media coverage goes way beyond a ‘circus’ and is completely out of proportion to the scale of the financial statistics. Greece is only 1.3 percent of the eurozone economy and 0.39 percent of the world economy. Whilst appreciating the broader implications for the euro as a currency, the likely outcome is that Greece will leave and the world will carry on. There has been no sign of a flight to safety based on Greece; gold has dropped further and the euro itself is, recently, all but unaffected. What we are really talking about here is a political situation; the big hitters in the Euro group do not want to see any form of breakup, although the unsustainability of Greece’s economic position almost makes a ‘Grexit’ inevitable. Actually, even if Greece could somehow return to a growth path, the level of debt and the time that’s been wasted with no vital reforms makes the burden of the debt repayments virtually untenable. Even if the Euro group agreed to some ‘debt forgiveness’, which is highly unlikely at this stage, the problem would then simply shift to other nations, who are currently suffering, but making repayments. They would quite naturally argue – if it’s good enough for Greece, it’s good enough for us. With recent announcement from Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, confirming that contingency plans for all eventualities are in place, including a Greek exit from the Euro, combined with the final deadline for Greece to submit credible proposals by July 10 and an agreement by July 12 should, at last, draw a line under the whole debacle, one way or another. Whilst many do not want to see Greece leave the Euro, we would argue that both Europe and Greece would be better off. The truth is that if the Greeks reintroduced the drachma it would, naturally devalue substantially against the euro but that would make Greece far more competitive for its tourism industry and export businesses, as well as becoming an extremely cost-effective destination for those in Europe and beyond looking for a home in the sun. As far as the eurozone is concerned, they would be able to put this whole saga behind them and concentrate on developing Europe’s recovery. In our view, this whole scenario has diverted too much attention away from all the problems at hand elsewhere. The sadness is that, in Greece, it’s the normal working and retired people who have suffered severely through this, whilst the rich and political classes have barely been affected. The 2nd Thailand Domestic MICE Mart in Pattaya The implementation of D-MICE: Meeting in Thailand features the encouragement of domestic conferences and exhibitions through sales promotional campaigns. The 2nd Thailand Domestic MICE Mart is scheduled for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Khon Kaen and Pattaya. Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) is moving fast in the expansion of MICE business in Pattaya City, focusing on quality markets like SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) segment, industrial estate, CLMV (Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam) countries and specific interest groups. To implement the goals, the bureau held the second Mart which was fully equipped with business negotiation activity between buyers and sellers, promotion of supporting packages and tax relief privileges. Opening the Mart at Holiday Inn Pattaya, Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, TCEB president, reported that MICE business in here has seen a high growth, especially in first three months of 2015 when the number of MICE travelers totaled 1,046,536, which generated revenue of some 4 million baht. He suggested the numbers prove that Pattaya has become a popular, ideal MICE destination. Nopparat noted that in their free time, “these MICE travelers prefer golfing and sea
excursion. They arrive Pattaya by road and return to their countries by air via the Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Pattaya City is considered a strategic point with convenient transportation, comprehensive facilities for MICE and various tourist attractions by which can cater well to the need of aforementioned MICE travelers. The encouragement for MICE travelers from the CLMV market to come to Pattaya for MICE events was initiated to spur growth. As well, TCEB has created packages to support corporate clients organizing meetings or incentives events for groups of 30 or more staying at least two nights. The 2nd Thailand Domestic MICE Mart in Pattaya is expected to generate revenue of 15 million baht.

Our Community 2015 Dressage Competitions at Horseshoe Point Pattaya On Sunday, June 21, the International Riding School at Horseshoe Point held two dressage competitions, in the morning for disabled riders and in the afternoon for ablebodied beginners.
some from the therapy it gives, others by actually learning to ride. The benefits can be enormous and wide-ranging. They include improvements to balance, coordination, muscle tone, concentration, cooperation and behavior. Dressage tests consist of a series of Morning Session: Special Needs circles, turns and transitions. For a person Competition with limited physical ability, who has mastered Many disabled people benefit from riding, the basic skills of halt, walk and steering, dressage provides a continuing challenge and the opportunity to compete against others. The walk/trot test moves the rider up to another level Walk Test Winner Riz Anjemeena Reyes (right) with with judge Dr Ellen Ryan where some sitting or rising trot will be performed. Our Community From Babylon to Pattaya Hydroponics, the process of growing plants in water without soil, has been around for centuries. It is believed the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon functioned along hydroponic principles more than 2,000 years ago, and there is also evidence that the Aztecs developed a system of floating gardens in the 10th century. Now this system of growing fresh and nutritious vegetables has arrived in Pattaya, at the Father Ray Children’s Home. Cooperation between the residents of the Children’s Home and a group of students at Ruamrudee International
School in Bangkok, who made a donation to the Home of 114,840 baht, has seen the construction of a large greenhouse, complete with all the equipment needed to grow vegetables.
The official opening ceremony took place on June 29, with Father Peter, President of the Father Ray Foundation, welcoming students and parents from Bangkok to see how their donation has been spent. The aim of the hydroponics greenhouse is to not only provide healthy and nutritious food, but also to teach new skills to the underprivileged children and students with disabilities at the Father Ray Foundation. Income made through the selling of surplus crops will be used to enlarge the hydroponic system.
by Derek Franklin
This is just one of projects in the self-sufficiency initiatives at the Father Ray Children’s Home, which apart from offering a home to more than 130 children, is also home to several hundred chickens, a large pond full of tilapia and catfish, a pig sty, a rice field, vegetable gardens and fruit orchards. While it may take many more years before the Foundation is 100 percent self-sufficient in providing enough food to feed the 850 children and students under its care, this is a start.

Local Sports PSC Tropical Golf from BJ’s RACE REPORT
Disastrous weekend for Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik at Silverstone
Round 3 of the GP3 Series on July 3-5 took place at the Silverstone circuit in the countryside just two hours north of London, Great Britain. The Thai driver was keen to improve upon his results from the previous round in Austria, and was aiming for a top-10 finish. Stuvik, as usual, is racing for Status GP with the support of Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, and the Sports Authority of Thailand. Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik qualified in 19th place with a time of 1:48.541, 1.501 from the pole position driver Marvin Kirchhofer who set a 1:47.040. Second and third grid spots were Emil Bernstorff and Alex Palou, respectively. Stuvik said, “We made a lot of changes to the car after free practice as the car was pretty difficult to drive. However, with the car as it was in practice I was not able to fully find the grip of the tire and we went into qualification on the back foot. This doesn’t set up the weekend well because if you have a bad qualification run it’s almost impossible to make it up in the race.” Race 1 of the weekend on Saturday afternoon saw Stuvik finishing in 22nd place after a dismal drive and a failing fuel pump in the last laps of the race. First place was Marvin Kirchhofer, followed by Emil Bernstorff and Matt Parry in second and third positions. Stuvik said, “This circuit has much lower tire degradation as we are on the superhard compound. I was saving my tires as I thought there would be a cliff drop off in performance as in Barcelona, but it was for nothing. On the last few laps we had an issue with the fuel pumps and I could barely finish the race.” Race 2 on Sunday morning the Thai driver finished in 20th place. First place was Kevin Ceccon, with Esteban Ocon and Ralph Boschung filling out the podium. Stuvik said, “This weekend has really gone from bad to worse. Now we’ll have to learn from it and make sure to be in the
Khao Kheow (Stableford) This day is always one of the most looked forward to in the calendar month as we all get ready to play this difficult and rewarding golf course. Difficult because this is a tough golf course that ensures you stay focused as one bad shot can lead to big trouble, and rewarding because if you play well and score well you know you have had a fine day. On this day we arrived on time and were told we were to play the A and B Nines, for me the best 18 holes, and that the B Nine greens were faster than the A Nine, and this we found to be true. Naturally we had a wind all day, I do not know what it is about the Eastern Seaboard but it always seems to be windy, I suppose it could be because we are near the sea on most of the courses, but some of them are many miles from the sea. Stood on the first tee the way ahead looked good, the course appeared fine and we were told we could use buggies on most of the course, but on one or
two holes we had to be careful and keep to the rough. One difference on the day is that A8 was set up to play as a par 4, so the par for the course was to be 71, small change but interesting as when it is a par 5 the tee shot is one of the most difficult around. So off we went on A1 and the course was as we expected it. With the wind behind us, the first four holes were not too bad but playing into the wind the last five holes we found the going hard. The fairways were quite good but the greens were a bit slow. All in all the A Nine was as difficult as expected and most players struggled. Onto the B Nine and it seemed to be a little better manicured, but the wind was still up and the walkers started to tire making this nine hard work. As we were told the greens on the second nine were indeed a bit faster but all in all there was an inconsistency. Players finished the round very tired. I expected the scores to be not very good. Back at BJ’s and it was soon time for the results when it was

seen that except for one score the course had as usual been the winner. In the A Flight, 0 to 17, the winner with 32 points was Takeshi Hakozaki, ahead of a countback on 31 points that saw Paul Smith in second, Landis Brooks in third and Andre Van Dyk just losing out. The scores attested to the difficulty of the course on the day. However we had two good scores in the B Flight as the winner, Derek Brook, had a very fine indeed 40 points, as they say every dog has his day. In second place the other good score came from Barry Oats
with 36 points then in third we had a countback on 31 points that saw Henry Wong in third and Nigel Perry just missing out. So Khao Kheow 21, Drawn 1 and Tropical Golf 1. Quite a massacre, however the beer tasted good. Incidentally, on the 18th hole a dog pinched the near pin marker and ran off with it. Thanks go to the caddies who chased after the dog and got back a much chewed marker. TTFN. Near pin: Nigel Perry, AVD, Jon Dean, Daryl Evans Long put: Daryl Evans
Gerri and the Place-getters! The Growling Swan welcomed back Peter Soerensen and Bill Steinman, whilst the fully recovered Stuart Rifkin was delighted to be sledged after his enforced layoff. Our destination was Bangpra, the affectionately named ‘monkey course’. Sadly, we hadn’t played there for some time, but it was worth the wait.We played off the white tees. The course was in great nick and the undulating slick greens were immaculate. As per recent times, it looked like rain would intervene, but it held off and a gentle breeze kept playing conditions very pleasant. Whilst most combatants struggled in vain on the ‘lightning fast’ greens, the inimitable Gerri Crilly was the surprise packet. Gerri flourished and his golf game was like trying to find fault with Miss Venezuela. He powered to a convincing win with 40 points, 8

Newcomer Frank Martineau wins at Mountain Shadow top 10 at the next race. We know we can be competitive, but it hasn’t worked out this weekend.” The next race for the Thai driver will take place next weekend at the Hungaroring circuit for the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 24-26. “I'm looking forward to the next race, it’s a very technical circuit, the downside is that overtaking is very difficult so it means qualifying will be crucial. Thank you to all my fans and my sponsors for your support; it is an honour to represent Thailand in the top level of motorsports.”

Just when you thought maybe the worst of the heat was behind us along comes a day to remind you “not yet”. Such was the case as the group of golfers met at BJ’s Holiday Lodge for breakfast and transport assignments to play Mountain Shadow. Seventeen players were hoping to find the golf magic this day, and so off we went. Checking in without any delay we found the course empty. After some warm-up we were able to tee off a bit early. Playing off the blue tees, we found that Mountain Shadow is in good condition now, with fairways well covered and fast greens, and represents exceptional value. The day was fairly hot but at times there
was some breeze to cool down the golfers a little, and umbrellas were a common implement. Playing in such weather can be tiring and saps concentration, so who would prevail this day? Mountain Shadow is a test of golf, but newcomer Frank Martineau (hcp 15) showed he had what it takes by earning an amazing 39 points, four clear of the field. Well played, Frank! Next in line was Mashi Kaneta (14) with a respectable 35 points, beating last week’s Mug winner Landis Brooks (9) on countback. In fourth place was Ted Morris (13), just one back with 34 points. Good golf, guys, and
overall a good day out for everyone. Near Pins: Landis Brooks (2), Andre Van Dyk, Derek Brook Long putt: Graham Buckingham

Local Sports Happy Birthday to The Golf Club! Green Valley – Monthly Medal – White Tees 1st – Kenny Aihara (3) net 70 2nd – Paul Tudor (5) net 72 3rd – Charles Tregurtha (7) net 73 Wow! Kenny does it again! For the very first time in our eightyear history, one man has won four stars on his shirt for four Monthly Medal wins and it is no surprise to see it is Aihara. That is a run of great golf and as consistent as Kenny is, it really was just a matter of time. Way to go, Kenny, we know a fifth is on the cards for next year! Pretty soon you will have as many Antigua’s as Dave Ferris! Greenwood A&B – White Tees 1st – Ben Denham (3) 37 points 2nd – Kenny Aihara (3) 34 points 3rd – Steve Zeigler (13) 32 points

with our fresh salsa, Bubba’s pulled pork, Johnsonville Brats, Speith’s Sliders, Buffalo Wings and loads of sides. Nobody leaves this place hungry! It was a quick trip out as the last 7 kilometers of road has improved greatly and we had little problem dealing with Amata as last week was a nightmare through this junction. You just never know! Time out was 55 minutes and back about the same, but it is well worth it once you get here. Apart from a sizzling one hour stretch in the middle, weather was just great and a perfect afternoon breeze kicked up for the back nine play. The golf course was in top shape, it really is worth that little extra bit of a drive to get out here because it is such a good track. Greens are probably the fastest and most treacherous in Pattaya, but that is what makes this place fun! This is a great course for a Scramble, and when you throw in that Rainbow format (six red, six white and six blue tees) it makes for some interesting strategic moves. For once, my fellow TGC partner Adam and I found ourselves at the finishing 4 holes with all our drives in and playing three reds and a blue in hand. As hot as Adam’s putter was, I certainly dragged him down to my level.
Steve Z with Ben & Ken back at TGC
We haven’t been out here to Greenwood in quite some time and it was good to get back to this lovely golf course. Like Pattavia and Treasure Hills, it is another 15 minutes up the 331 but so good when you do finally get here. Visiting Floridian Steve Zeigler did well today and found his form for third. Once again, it is Kenny up on the podium as last week he was absent from any victories thus giving the other lads a shot. Ben Denham was the story of the day as he blew away the field with a 37 out here, so well played to Ben for a great round off just a 3! Pattavia Century – 2-Man Scramble – White Tees. 1st – Billy Eyles/Peter Rogers net 61.8 2nd – Freddy Graham/Nick Handscombe 63.6 3rd – Barry Collier/Ron Robertson 64.5 Today we celebrated the 8th birthday of The Golf Club a day early as the 4th fell on a weekend. Our famous Clubhouse Ribs were on the menu as well The big winners again, Peter Rogers & Billy Eyles! as Beef Tacos al Trevino

Third Place went to Barry Collier and Ron (R2) Robertson with a decent score of 64.5 and second was a card from Freddy Graham and Nicky Handscombe with a 63.6 circled on top. But the big winners were the defending champions Peter Rogers (USA) and Billy Eyles (England) who ham and egged their way around this tough track to reclaim the top prize with a hot 61.8. Both will receive our legendary Antigua shirts monogrammed for the event as well as a Steak Night dinner of their choice. Near Pins went to Peter Rogers (4th hole), Mark Wood (7th hole), Nick Handscombe (13th hole) and lastly Steve Ellison on the 17th. Nicky also took the longest putt on the 18th of 26 feet and Kenny Aihara had the long drive nailed down on the 9th. All of these technical prizes win pork chop dinners on the BBQ for another day. Thanks to all who joined us and we hope the 4th was just as good for you! The Golf Club is “The Home of Golf in Pattaya” and located on Soi LK Metro. We broadcast all English Premier League, UFC, NFL, MLB and AFL games live. Our kitchen is open from 7 am to 10:30 pm with our famous Steak Nights on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Second Phantom Golf Cup This was the second Phantom Golf Cup Tournament and once again the interest shown was very good as we had 37 players on the starting sheet after some late cancellations. There was a bit of a change in format as it was suggested that we have a low gross prize so we settled on A Flight (0 to 9) playing stroke from the white tees and B Flight (10 to 20) and C Flight (21 and over) both playing from the yellow tees. I managed to manipulate four of the A Flight players into the same group which resulted in an interesting tussle and much appreciated by them. There were technical awards on each hole, 6 holes for A Flight, 6 holes for B Flight and 6 holes for C Flight giving everyone a fair chance and the awards varied from nearest the pin on par threes, longest drives, longest first putts, nearest the pin in two shots, nearest the pin in three shots and nearest to the box on the fairway. The weather was excellent with blue skies all day and the golf course was in superb condition which was an absolute bargain at green fee, caddy fee and cart fee for 1,300 baht. The first group got away early at 9:50 am and with very few holdups throughout the day most groups finished their rounds in four hours and 15 minutes or less. Apart from the 18 technical awards there was a low gross prize, first place in A Flight net and first, second and third prizes in both B and C flights who played stableford. Presentations were held back at The Phantom Bar where a fantastic buffet meal was

In the B Flight it was Dipty Narongsak who was the winner with 37 points, one point ahead of Ed Wyckoff in second place and Larry Gibb was third with 35 points. Steve Newton won the C Flight with 36 points and Bobby Rattanaruangs was second with 34 points and Wan Makmul finished third on 33 points. You & Your Pets Love is Blind Do you have a dog or cat that is blind or going blind? Odds are the disability is of more concern to you than it is to your pet; he can get along just fine, thank you, by relying on such senses as smell and hearing. Just as people tend to need glasses as they age, so does vision tend to deteriorate in older cats and dogs. But the animals adjust to the deficit and make accommodations so successfully that owners often are surprised to discover that their aging buddy has become blind. Eye disorders can affect the vision of pets at any age, but are more common in older animals. Cataracts turn the clear lens of the eye cloudy and opaque, and ultimately result in blindness. Older pets also can suffer glaucoma— an increased pressure within the eyeball that leads to blindness. Treatments are available but expensive and limited to specialty veterinary ophthalmology practices. But keep in mind, a blind pet—old or young—can have a wonderful, happy life, and is no less loving. Here’s what you can do to improve the safety and
Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. comfort level of your blind pet… Be consistent. Do not change the locations of food and water bowls or pet beds and litter boxes, and avoid rearranging the furniture in your home. Safeguard danger zones. Pad any sharp edges of furniture until your pet learns to avoid the danger. Block off steep stairways with baby gates. Some blind pets become more dependent on you, act clingy, and follow you around. Get in the habit of speaking to your cat when you enter or leave a room to help her keep track of your whereabouts. If you have more than one animal in your home, another cat or dog may serve as a guide for the blind pet. Help your blind pet by attaching a bell or other noise maker to the other animal's collar. Blind pets tend to startle more easily, so always speak to your cat before petting him to avoid being accidentally nipped or swatted in reflex. Remember, blind pets typically are still very happy. They continue to enjoy and remain engaged in life and the world around them—including you. They still need love.

Hard to Swallow Pet owners can’t always control what their animals put into their mouths. So if you suspect that your cat or dog has ingested something potentially dangerous, but she seems normal and shows no sign of illness, stay calm and call your vet. Tell him or her what might have been eaten and ask if it requires emergency treatment. Not all exposure situations require an immediate trip to the clinic. On the other hand, if your animal is having seizures, losing consciousness, is unconscious or is having difficulty breathing, telephone ahead and take your pet immediately to the closest veterinarian. When you call, be ready to describe the symptoms, the suspected agent and time it was ingested, and your animal’s species,

Cat Corner Tip How old is kitty?
Got a new kitten and have no idea how old it is? Here are a few clues to help you determine its age. Check her teeth. Baby teeth (small and pointed) come in around three weeks of age; permanent teeth (wider and flat) at 3-4 months— middle incisors first in about 14 weeks, second and third incisors at about 16 weeks. Check his weight. You usually can estimate about a half kilo per month up until five months. So for a healthy kitten weighing one kilo, safely guess it is about eight weeks old; 2-1/2 kilos, five months old. Are her eyes open? They aren’t when new-born. They open their eyes after about 10 days. Is he walking and playing? Most kittens start walking around three weeks of age but take a little longer to gain their coordination. You can comfortably assume that a kitten is at least a month old if it is walking and playing.
