Vol. 8 No. 5 ! 16 -30 November 2008 was handed over to hospital management for the purchase of infant incubators and defibrillators. In fact, it was learned that recently a child fatality at the hospital might have been averted had there been one of these devices on hand. The Nagas MC, loyal supporters of the Jesters Care for Kids Charity Drives since 2005, have been Platinum Sponsors, or 100,000 baht donors, for the last 3 years. This year they chose to have their donation go to the Chonburi General Hospital Children’s Ward after hearing of their dire need for essential equipment. The Jesters decided to match their

Handicapped tourists need a better service The elderly might benefit from lofty plan

DEPUTY mayor Weerawut Kharkai organised yet another meeting after learning that there still too many Russian guides in the resort according to their Thai critics. Previously, the employment department had issued a directive that were too many non work permit holders, Russians in the main, leading tour groups and denying Thai guides their crust of bread so to speak. It was stated once again at the meeting that foreign labour was illegal unless supported by full Labour Office documen-

tation and proof of payment of the fees. The argument the other way has been that not enough Thai tour guides speak Russian and the way out of the dilemma was some sort of partnership or informal understanding since many Russians visited the resort and expected to see the wonders here explained to them in their native tongue. Police lieutenant colonel Suwan Oonanant, Pattaya tourist police chief, said the incidents had been going on for long enough. The resulting

Mr Apichart Puedpan, assistant to Pattaya’s district administrative chief, chaired a meeting to talk about facilities for groups such as children, the elderly and the physically challenged. It was stated by the Father Ray Redemptorist Centre, which runs a vocational centre for the handicapped, that they had a detailed plan to make the city more user friendly by improving road sgns and creating better facilities in public places, including confusion and bad publicity had affected the image of Pattaya and police alike. There was no formal solution to the dilemma at the meeting, but the deputy mayor urged the Russian tour guides to speak again to their Thai counterparts before a further, final meeting which would make a decision binding on all parties.

footpaths. It was urged at the meeting that other groups, including the very young and the very old, would benefit from the improvements. Tourist receipts would also rise as handicapped persons might well stay longer in the resort. Currently, Pattaya city fathers had hired King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Lardkrabang (architecture department) to design a city more useful to the disabled and to present it to the city authority. Amongst the ideas to be presented would be rest areas for the disabled, adapted toilets at hotels and a special pathway all along the beach waterfront. However, it was stressed that the responsibility was not only city hall’s. Both the private sector and other government would need to bend their backs and turn out their pockets to turn dreams into reality.
