1987

Editor: Mark Berry, Bridge Cottage, Sparkford. North Cadbury 40778 Almost before we realise it 1987 is half over and the holiday season is with us once again, if the weather ever relents sufficiently to allow us to think of holidays. With this in mind, this number of the Parish News will be for the two months of July and August. In this issue we have the first contribution from one of the pupils of Queen Camel School. If space permits we hope to be able to publish further items of this nature in the future. Items for the next issue by August 15th, please.

SPARKFORD

PARISH COUNCIL

At the June meeting of the Parish Council it was agreed that the Clerk should again write to the Area Manager of the Post Office complaining of the late delivery of the first post of the day. We have the ridiculous situation whereby some parishioners receive the second post some half an hour before the first post, and this is in no way the fault of the person delivering the mail. Rather it is due to the arrangements introduced since reorganisation of the postal services to this area. The problem was raised of the fields between the Cam Bridge on the A303 and the Old Mill flooding after heavy rain. This, it is felt is due to the build-up of silt which is caused by the land slipping away from the bank of this stretch of the river. It is feared that the problem will be further aggravated by the road works when work on the Sparkford bypass commences sometime in 1988. The problem has been reported to Wessex Water, as mentioned in the June issue of the Parish News, but it is to be followed up urgently and Mr. Cluett is also to ask the South Somerset District Council to investigate. Mr. Boyle-Hayward, the County Divisional Surveyor, has agreed to have various complaints investigated including flooding within the vicinity of 'Underwoods' at Weston Bampfylde and the problem of damaged banking to the roadway at Higher Farm Lane; Weston Bampfylde. He has further been requested to investigate the possibility of resurfacing the road alongside Manor Farm Cottage, Weston Bampfylde. A strong protest is to be made to Mr. Clotworthy, the Chief Planning Officer of the South Somerset District Council, that a decision to disallow the application by the Cricket Club to display advertising signs on two cricket screens was reached before the Parish Council had the opportunity to make their recommendations. The Clerk is also to investigate again the possibility of grants from the South Somerset District Council to the Cricket Club. It was noted that in a recent issue of the 'Western Gazette', reference was made to a decision by the Sparkford Parish Council in relation to a planning application for a "proposed steel works" at Rats Castle. This, of course, was a mistake by the Western Gazette because Rats Castle is not within the boundaries of this Parish. The light outside 15 Church Road, opposite the entrance to Twines Close, is again not working properly and Mr. Good of Southern Electricity is to be informed of the fault. REMINDER: Parishioners are reminded that we are entered for the 1987 'Best Kept Village' Competition and that judging will continue into late August. Next Meeting: 6th July, 8.00 pm Avril Ward Clerk to the Council

AUTUMN

FAIR

There will be a meeting at Sparkford Parish Hall on Thursday, 9th July, at 7.30 p.rn., to discuss arrangements for the Autumn Fair, which will be held on Saturday, 14th November, in the Agricultural Hall of the Sparkford Inn. We hope that anyone willing to help in any way will come along.

CUB'S CHAT Glorious June is here at last!! The Cubs are practising for the Sports Day when we shall race against other Cubs from Bruton, Castle Cary, Milborne Port, Templecombe and Wincanton. Last year we won, so we shall try extra hard this year to come first again. We have a Quiz ready for all the families to do at the Teddy Bears' Picnic and hope you will all join in the fun. Bring your thinking caps! We have a Cub Fun Day at the end of June at Cricket St. Thomas (near Chard!); the Cubs are making animal masks to wear - it could be difficult to spot the 'real' animals on the day.
