From the Editors Desk... Hello everyone, as I write/type this magazine we are blessed with the utterly best weather we have had in years. We are drawing very close to one of the best times of the year Holiday season. Please make sure that if any of you are outside all day that you take the sensible precautions and make sure that you have put on sun cream, have a hat, & have plenty of water to keep you revived. Where possible stay out of the sun during the peak times between 12pm & 2pm as the sun is at its hottest. Please be a good neighbour and check in on our elderly residents to make sure they are safe & well during this hot weather. I would like to express my continued gratitude to all of you whom deliver the magazine for me during the year. I am now very pleased to announce that Cara Nathan has kindly agreed to take on the role for delivery for Wolfester Terrace. MANY THANKS you saved the day. The Youth Social Action Fund is open for grant applications between £1,000 and £5,000 to promote social action amongst young people. Social action is about stepping up to help others, learning new things, having fun, and building personal skills along the way. It might involve volunteering, raising money for a great local cause, or campaigning for something that young people really believe it. Currently, 4 in 10 young people regularly take part in social action, but we want to see that number increase by 50% by 2020. We know that young people have energy, talent and commitment to contribute to their communities, so the Youth Social Action Fund has been created to make this a reality. With funding from the UK Government and the Big Lottery Fund, Somerset Community Foundation is looking for community groups in our county who can run great social action projects. Young people might want to organise traditional social action, like regular youth volunteering at a care home, or something different, such as micro-volunteering activities where individual young people decide what they want to do. For example, a group of friends might create a social media campaign promoting positive body image. Applications for between £1,000 and £5,000 can be made now via our website, with the deadline for this year’s funding being 12 May 2017. If anyone would like to talk through ideas before applying then please call Andy on 01749344949 or email andrew.ridgewell@somersetcf.org.uk Apply now: www.somersetcf.org.uk/socialaction

Get inspired, get motivated, get active, come dancing! Although there are many enjoyable ways to get fit, I would say there are very few that are as much fun and as sociable as doing modern jive. Strictly Jive (www.strictlyjive.com) do modern jive moves at the hall nest to the Sparkford Inn, High Street, Sparkford, BA22 7jh every Wednesday night, starting at 7.30. The hall has a wonderful dance floor, is light, easily accessible, a large car park and a bar. What is modern jive? Sometimes known as Mo'jive, LeRoc, or Ceroc, it is a fusion of Ballroom, Jive and Latin dance styles. It's a partner dance but, you don't need to bring your own. It's easy to learn and really good fun to do. As well as this, it’s great to watch. You can dance to any tune as long as it has a beat, so the music choices are endless. The benefits of dancing are many, it gets you away from the Television, and you meet new people and have a fun night out. It's an easy and a fun way of exercising, as well as learning a new skill. It also exercises the brain and focuses on visual, auditory, and tactile skills without you even noticing. We welcome absolute beginners every week, with our beginner class will starting around 7.30pm, followed by music to practice. We will also do an Improver class later in the evening for anyone who wants to join in. Jive classes are the friendliest classes around, with people walking around with a big smile on their face. My website is www.strictlyjive.com and my mobile is 07811018284. If you like further information, please let me know. Kind regards Roy Warry

We URGENTLY need your votes to help us buy our new minibus! Our local Scout group is working hard to raise funds for a new minibus – no easy task! We have put in a bid to the Co-op community fund to help. You can vote for our project by logging in to your membership account if you are a Co-Op member, or for just £1 and a few easy clicks you can join here www.coop.co.uk/membership and not only vote for us – SPARKFORD SCOUT GROUP (please do!) but also get money off your own shopping at Co-op! THANK YOU for helping us

Our Beavers have been having a lovely time in the woods over the last few weeks, they have learnt to cook on a camp stove and on a camp fire, and this week went tree-shaking to see what mini beasts we could find and earn their Explorer badge. We had a great hike from West Camel to Queen Camel and started to learn how to read a map. We have also been making cards and gifts for Father's Day. The Beavers are very excited about their upcoming Sleepover, this could be their first time away overnight for some, but we are going to have lots of fun!

The Cubs have been busy getting ready for a District Wide Cub camp, where they will be staying with around 200 other cubs – learning how to be organized with equipment and teamworking. We have also been getting to know Sparkford by doing an alphabet scavenger hunt.

Before half term the Scouts did a first aid session to freshen up on their basic first aid skills and had great fun doing some role play, bandaging each other and learning what to do in an emergency. With the lighter nights and warmer weather, we've been kayaking and hiking at Langport and it's brilliant to see the Scouts skill and confidence growing on the water. We also had a weekend visit to Dorset Water Park with West Coker Scouts which was great fun.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR NEW LEADERS FOR SCOUTS AND CUBS – this could be as casual helpers or full leaders - anyone interested in joining or helping please email sparkfordscoutgroup@gmail.com For any other enquiries or ideas please contact Helen Wooldridge – helen@cuddledry.com

As you all now know Sparkford no longer has a Neighborhood Watch, it was disbanded in April 2016 due to no one willing to step forward to take the helm which is an unfortunate fact. This comes at a time when our security and peace of mind is eroded not only by the inability of the police to continue the support and protection we had once all come to expect, but also by what is happening in the world around us. Neighborhood Watch has always provided a link between ourselves and the Police and even been referred to as the “eyes & ears” of the Police. It has also helped in consolidating a community from a social angle as well as a security one. Everything was handed over to the Parish Council as of April, the onus was placed firmly on our Parish council to at least keep a “watching brief” on the Neighborhood Watch. This I believe is a possible solution and would be in line with councils who delegate the various responsibilities, such as planning, footpaths, trees etc. to different councilors. I would like to again Ask if there is anyone in our community who would be willing to take on the running of the watch. If this is something you could see yourself doing, please contact a member of the Sparkford Parish Council whom would be able to help you set it up once more.
