SPARKFORD

PARISH COUNCil

Summary of the November meeting Mr. Cluett expressed a deep sorrow on behalf of the Parish Council at the tragic death of Mr. Alfred Budgell. Mr. Budgell, a popular, long time resident of Sparkford, died as a result of an accident on the A.303 outside the Sparkford Inn on the 31 st. October. Following a suggestion by Mr. Bishop, it was agreed to ask the Chief Superintendent of Yeovil Police for a full report of the accident. After studying this, the Parish Council will consider whether or not to press for a speed limit through Sparkford. Ironically perhaps, it was learned that a decision following the public inquiry into the proposed A.303 Sparkford by-pass is expected soon after Christmas. The water channel at 'Pensioners Rest', blocked by tarmac, thus causing surface water to collect is to be cleared. The hole in the road opposite the entrance to Ainstey Drive is also to be levelled. The Parish Council is to ask the S.S.D.C. for advice concerning the lack of a name plate indicating the whereabouts of Ainstey Drive. It will be recalled that the absence of such a sign has and still is causing concern to those outside the Parish wishing to visit residents of the Drive socially or otherwise. Now that we are into the planting season again, Councillors are to meet the District Arborist in the cricket field to discuss the type and size of trees best suited to replace the felled lime tree. Mr. Cluett thanked Mr. J. Toop warmly for his help in repairing the stile on the approach to the footpath behind the Council built garages off Church Road so splendidly. A letter from the S.S.D.C. explaining section 101 of the Local Government Act - Discharge of Duties, briefly asks if Parish Councils can discharge more efficiently and economically 'any functions presently undertaken by the S.S.D.C. No ideas were forthcoming but the Parish Council reserve the right to make future suggestions. Next meeting:

YOUR HELP IS WANTED! Now is the time, with the dark winter nights, for a spot of nostalgia. Sort out all your old photographs of people and places in Sparkford, and remember the happenings and events of the past. I am trying to compile a history of Sparkford and I desperately need your help with photographs and memories. Don't be put off by the fact that you would like to hang on to grannie's picture as a keepsake; I can have a copy taken and give you yours back. I would be very grateful for any help you can give.
