Vo1.2, No.~

September 1986

Editor: Mark Berry, Bridge Cottage, Sparkford, North Cadbury 40778 May we commend to your notice the Harvest services to be held in our three churches (and at South Barrow Methodist Church) at the end of this month and the beginning of October; in spite of the very unsettled weather of the Spring and Summer, there is still much to be thankful for, and it would be thrilling to think that all the churches will be full to overflowing. In response to our plea of last month we are pleased to report that we have a new distributor for Sparkford: Peter Kenward, of Twines Close to whom we express our thanks, in advance! Items for the next issue by September 18th, please.

SPARKFORD

PARISH COUNCIL

At the August meeting of the Parish Council, highway matters were discussed and it was learned that the road between Mill Farm, Weston Bampfylde, up to the A303 via Little Weston is to be inspected and the necessary repairs undertaken. The odd piece of land outside Mr. Cluett's property in Church Road is to be measured for surfacing very soon. The tree which had fallen into the river and which in the past has caused some flooding of surrounding fields off Church Road has now been removed, and for this, we thank Mr. Wyatt. The S.C.C. have ruled that the lay by outside the Council built properties in Church Road is intended only for servicing adjoining houses and not for long term parking. It is not the policy of the County to mark out parking bays in such lay bys and a precedent cannot be made in this case. The Tree Planting Committee reported on work undertaken since the previous meeting but there are still jobs to be done. Mr. Binding is to be reminded that the name plate promised for Ansty Drive is still to be erected. This would be most helpful to people visiting the properties in the Drive and also, more importantly, to ambulances and fire engines such as were called to the recent emergency. Mr. Thistlethwaite, the County Street Lighting Engineer, is to be reminded that the erratically-working light outside 47 Church Road has not yet been repaired. Mrs. North reported that there were 4 short in the recent delivery of bin bags and this is to be reported to the S.S.D.C. as is the complaint that Green Close was missed in the recent quarterly scavenge. Mr, Chappell reported that now Twines Close has been resurfaced, children were again using it as a race track. Complaints of similar misuse of footpaths and highways in other parts of the Parish were also noted. The Community is reminded that not only is this an offence in law, it is a hazard to pedestrians and road users alike and everyone's help in discouraging children from this dangerous practice is sought. If this plea fails there will be no alternative but to ask the Police to intervene.

The next meeting is on Monday 1st September at 8,00 pm. Avril Ward Clerk to the Council

HARVEST

THANKSGIVING

This year Sparkford and Weston Bampfylde Churches will join together for a special Harvest Evensong in Sparkford Church on Friday, September 26th, at 7.00 p.m. to be conducted by the Rev, R. Snowsell. This will be followed by a buffet Harvest Supper in Sparkford Parish Hall. A warm welcome is extended to everyone for both the service and the supper, and it is hoped that both the Church and the Hall will be full. Harvest celebrations will continue in Sparkford on Sunday, 28th September, with a Harvest Thanksgiving Communion service at 9.30 a.m. This will be conducted by the Rev. Guy Bennett, a descendant of the Bennett family which has such a strong connection with Sparkford. There will be no service at Weston Bampfylde on this day - all will be welcome at Sparkford. Celebrations will conclude with the sale of Harvest produce in Sparkford Parish Hall on Monday, September 29th at 7.30 p.m. On the following Sunday, October 5th, there will be no service at Sparkford, but everyone is invited to join in a Harvest Thanksgiving Evensong at Weston Bampfylde, at 6.30 p.m., to be conducted by Preb. L. Walsh. The sale of produce will be on Monday, 6th October in Weston Bampfylde Hall at 7.30 p.m.
