It is not uncommon for appeals for help by various organisations to appear in the pages of Parish News. Now here is an appeal for help for Parish News itself. Mrs. Totsy Edwards (to whom we are grateful for her help over the past year) is unable to continue delivering Parish News, so we are looking for volunteers to distribute the magazine in Sparkford, particularly to Wolfester Terrace and High Street. Anyone who can spare an hour or so once a month is asked to let me know as soon as possible. Items for the next issue by August 18th, please.
SPARKFORD
PARISH COUNCIL
At the July Meeting of the Parish Council, it was learned that dogs are entering the new playing field because the pedestrian gate is not kept shut. It was agreed that a notice prohibiting dogs and requesting that the gate be kept closed was necessary. Mr. Cluett said that he would put this suggestion and the suggestion that a lock be fitted to the field gate to the Playing Field Committee, of which he is also Chairman. Meanwhile, the co-operation of everyone using the field is asked to ensure that it provides a safe environment, particularly for the younger children. Still on the subject of the playing field, Mr. Cluett reported that very shortly now, with the help of the Manpower Services Commission, the play equipment would be erected. The meeting then went on to discuss highway matters during which it was agreed now that the actual bridge works at Weston Bampfylde are completed, the road between Mill Farm up to the A.303 via Little Weston is in urgent need of resurfacing. The Divisional Highway Surveyor is to be contacted in this respect. Mr. Cluett next reported that, as a result of recent investigations, a build-up of sludge had been cleared from the sewers, in and around Manor Close, and it is hoped this will solve the overflow problem. The Tree- Planting Committee then detailed the various maintenance tasks, undertaken since the last meeting, in the new copse off Sparkford Hill Lane and on trees planted between the Lane and the Electricity sub-station. There is still work to do, however, and the Committee will be in action again soon. A Public Inquiry into the A.303 improvement proposals, it is announced, will be held in the Autumn and the Parish will be notified of the exact date and venue in due course. As the grass verge running alongside the pavement outside Mr. Clark's property in Church Road is the responsibility of the Divisional Highway Surveyor, Mr. Boyle-Hayward is to be notified that it requires attention. NEXT MEETING:
MONDAY,
4th.
August,
8.00 pm.
Now that the long summer holidays are upon us, timely warnings from British Rail and the Countryside Cbmmission. Parents are reminded to warn children of the dangers of playing on or near railway lines, and also that some of our field and hedgerow plants, particularly those with brightly coloured berries, are very poisonous. CUB'S CHAT We路ve been busy planting seeds in the Sparkford Copse: primroses, cowslips, violets and harebells, which the Trust kindly provided. To these we added daffodil bulbs as our contribution. These have been carefully chosen to fit in with the existing flora and fauna and will hopefully make an appearance next Spring. . July saw us putting up nesting boxes in the Copse; one provided by the Trust to replace vandalised box and others which the Cubs have made themselves. This is all part of a Conservation Badge the boys are working for. We use the Copse for many of our activities and have also enjoyed practising for a forthcoming Sports Day on the new playing field. A game of rounders was also enjoyed there - until we lost the ball! Anyone finding it please hand it to Rachel Peaty, who will return it to Akela. Throughout the summer holidays we will be fishing in the River Brue, hiking along the Corton Ridge, visiting Yeovilton and camping at Huish woods near Taunton. On 24th. August we are entering a team of 4 Cubs in a 21/2 mile Fun Run at Langport. We hope to start a Beaver Colony (6-8 years) later this year: names for our ever growing waiting list now please to Akela (Carole Cranmer), Camel Leas, Babcary Road, South Barrow. (Tel. North Cadbury 40717).
