Flaming June has hardly lived up to its name yet, apart from a few days, England have just been knocked out of the World Cup, our cricketers seem to be heading for another defeat at Headingley - what a dismal picture! But all is not gloom and despair: in the garden the roses are in bud, peas are swelling in their pods, and soon we shall be digging the first of those luscious new potatoes. In this issue there are examples of many folk working in and for the community; to these we extend our grateful thanks, together with the hope that many, many, more will come forward to join them. Items for the next issue by July 18th, please.
SPARKFORD
PARISH COUNCIL
At the Annual General Meeting of the Sparkford Parish Council held in June, Mr. Cluett and Mr. Bishop were re-appointed to the Office of Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively. Each expressed appreciation to the Council for their confidence in them and were, in turn, thanked for their efforts on behalf of the Community. A discussion of highway matters then followed during which it was learned that Mr. Boyle- Hayward, the County Divisional Surveyor, is having the problem of water flowing over the road at Mr. King-Brain's farm at Little Weston investigated. The pot-hole in Church Road has been repaired and the blocked drain, also in Church Road, has been cleared. Mr. Boyle- Hayward is to be reminded that the kerbstones at the junction of Church Road with Manor Close are still to be lowered, to allow easier access to wheelchairs, etc. Concerning the sewage overflow in Manor Close, this is being investigated by S.S. D.C and Wessex Water using closed circuit T.V. Report expected soon. Regarding the obstructions in the stretch of river between Bridge Cottage and the Mill which cause surrounding fields to flood, Wessex Water have advised that they have jurisdiction over, and power to expend money on designated main rivers. However, the main river ends downstream of Sparkford Mill and consequently the length of watercourse in question is not so designated. The further help of the owners of the surrounding fields is, therefore, being sought. It was learned that the railings at the approach to Weston Bampfylde Bridge are to be replaced. The Tree Planting Committee is to undertake necessary work such as weeding the new copse off Sparkford Hill Lane, staking and generally overseeing the trees recently planted. It was reported that because Anstey Drive is not name-plated the fire brigade had difficulty in locating Anstey House where a fire occurred recently. It was noted that Mr. Binding has promised to erect a name plate which will alleviate the problem. Cheques were issued as under: Weston Bampfylde P.C.C: £65.00 - Grant for 1986/7 Sparkford P.C.C: £65.00 - Grant for 1986/7 Sparkford Parish Hall Committee: £65.00 - Grant for 1986/7 Sparkford Cricket Club: £65.00 - Half grant for 1986/7 Cornhill Insurance: £21.00 - Insurance premium for cricket field, bus shelter and playing field.
