We're one year old!, and if I may be so bold as to say so, already a well-established local institution. I make no excuse for repeating the gratitude we owe to those who help produce the magazine, to those who distribute it and to all who send in material for publication, without whom the whole enterprise would collapse. In particular I must mention again our indebtedness to Haynes Publishing, especially to Simon Slade and his colleagues, who manage to fit our relatively tiny monthly offering into their own production line and, what's more, do it so willingly and cheerfully. We have been privileged to report on many local activities during the past year, and hope to be able to do so for many to come. Items for the next issue by June 18th, please.

SPARKFORD PARISH COUNCIL At the May meeting of the Parish Council Mr. Cluett and Mrs. Cottier reported on their meeting with the District Arborist. Several trees in the cricket field have limbs which should be removed and estimates are being obtained from three tree surgeons. Fencing of the new playing field is almost completed, but there are still many jobs to do before suitable play equipment can be installed. Volunteers are urgently required. In response to a request from the Parish Council following the last meeting, the South Somerset District Council have agreed to include the whole of Church Road and Green Close in the quarterly scavenge. Now that the litter bin is in place at the entrance to Twines Close the seat known as Pensioners Rest is to be replaced. All Parishioners are asked to help in keeping this area tidy. Mr. Cluett reported that the litter bin, obtained from the S.S.D.C. free of charge, is to be placed in the new playing field. On the subject of litter it was agreed to seek the co-operation of all Parishioners in tying firmly the necks of refuse sacks and securing boxes, etc. used for rubbish to prevent their contents blowing about the highway. This is especially important with the cut in cleansing services. Mr Boyle-Hayward is to be advised that the surface of the road in the vicinity of Mr. King-Brain's Farm at Little Weston, already reported as being in need of attention, is deteriorating rapidly. This is probably due to a combination of traffic which is being diverted during bridge repairs, and the surface water, the source of which has not yet been determined. The Temporary road closure order is extended to 31st. May. The Parish Council is to object strongly to the application to build a further dwelling at Manor Close on a plot created from original plots 5 and 6 for the following reasons:1. 2. 3.

When planning permission was granted for the new houses already built a finite order for 6 only was made in line with the Country Structure Plan. The sewage from the development is already causing unresolved problems. The junction of Anstey Drive with Church Road is inadequate to serve traffic already using it.

Wessex Water have been asked if it is possible to clear obstructions from the section of river between Sparkford Bridge and the Mill to prevent flooding of surrounding fields. The drain outside 1 and 2 South View is again flooding in wet weather and a hole has appeared in the road outside 55/57 Church Road. These two complaints to be referred to Mr. Boyle-Hayward. The S.S.D.C. is to be asked for an urgent investigation, already promised, into the sewage overflow at Manor Close, which is.again causing problems. Mrs. Cottier reminded the meeting that the Scouts and Cubs are still urgently looking for a site for their hut. It was agreed that this responsible and caring body fulfills a very real need in the Community. If a site does become available it may be possible to start a Beaver Group for the younger children. The Scout Leaders have promised that every care will be taken to ensure that the site is maintained in the manner which reflects the caring tradition of the Movement. Mrs. Cottier, who is also our County Councillor, reported that the proposed A303 improvements are out to tender. Avril Ward Clerk to the Council
