There's much speculation going on at the moment regarding the possible dates for a General Election - will it be June, October, or next year? But what is certain is that next month, on May 7th, we shall be electing those to serve us for the next four years as District Councillor on the South Somerset District Council, and as our respective Parish Councillors. We hear many comments, both good and bad, about the doings of our local councils - now will be the, chance to express our views, by using our vote. Items for the next issue by April 18th, please.

SPARKFORD

PARISH COUNCIL

At the March meeting, Mr. Cluett welcomed back Mr. George Chappell following his recent spell in hospital and wished him well, on behalf of the Parish, for the future. Mr. Cluett also said that as we welcome our new Rector, Mr. Lyn Morris, it is fitting to record the gratitude of the Parish to Mr. and Mrs. Alan Hoskins for their work in arranging services with the help of visiting clergy, during the interregnum, thus ensuring the continuity of the spiritual life of the Community. Grateful thanks also to the many who had so worthily supported them. It is good to note that since the installation of the new transformer and the intervention of Mr. Good, no further complaints about the electricity supply have been reported. It is to be hoped that the same will apply to the street lights when the replacement starter units have all been installed. Mr. Boyle-Hayward, the Divisional Highway Surveyor, is to look into our outstanding complaints, outlined in the previous issue of the 'Parish News' and he will authorise the work he considers necessary. The S.S.D.C. is to investigate the possibility of providing a layby outside 15 - 22 Green Close, to ease parking difficulties. British Telecom is to be asked to reinstate the original cleaning arrangements following a complaint that the telephone box at Weston Bampfylde is in a disgusting state. Next meeting:

Monday,

6th. April. 7.30 pm Avril Ward Clerk to the Council

THINGS THAT GO BUMP ... ! It is reported that our nocturnal friends - badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, etc are causing havoc during their night-time 'walkabouts' by attempting certain duties properly undertaken by the S.S.D.C. Apparently, these creatures, with their highly developed sense of smell, have discovered that tasty morsels often lurk within the contents of bulging plastic refuse sacks, cardboard boxes and the like. Thus, a frantic search begins and such delicacies are hastily carried away. Whilst applauding the inherent 'wornblinq' approach of our friends to the re-cycling of palatable waste, we can only regret the trails of discarded litter they leave behind. It follows, therefore, that a united effort to thwart the misguided intentions that give rise to this chaos is needed and so all residents are asked: 1. To tie the necks of plastic sacks tightly and secure all other waste containers. 2. To delay putting out waste until 8.00 am of the day of the 'official' collection. (We understand on good authority, that these nocturnal creatures operate a voluntary ban on working the 'day sh ift). After reading this, you could be forgiven for thinking our friends of the night are entirely to blame. Not so. Our regular, uninvited weekend visitor, inclement weather, with the nasty habit of hurling untethered waste in all directions, is also guilty. The action described above, could do much to lessen the effect of these spiteful outbursts. Over the next few months, the results achieved by following the recommended plan will be carefully monitored. Meanwhile, a decision on the possible issue of vandal-proof steel containers, padlocks and chains, and solid oak tethering posts has been delayed. Avril Ward.

FOOTNOTE The chairman, closing the public meeting, held at Sparkford School on 8th February 1952, to discuss the possible purchase of the school as a parish hall "thanked those for attending, and remarked that but for an aeroplane coming down at Weston that evening more would have attended". Can anyone throw any light on this - what sort of aeroplane, where at Weston, etc?
