SPARKFORD
PARISH COUNCIL
At the July meeting of the Parish Council it was learned that the Cricket Club is to go ahead with an application for a licence to sell alcohol in the pavilion. It was also learned that in this connection a Committee has been formed to establish a Social Club. The Parish Council is assured that precautions will be taken to ensure the strict control of the sale of alcohol. It is understood that the work on the second phase of the street lighting scheme is now complete. Concerning other lights reported faulty at the previous meeting, these are to be repaired as soon as possible. The highway matters reported at the previous meeting have now been attended to with the exception of the resurfacing of Twines Close which is expected shortly. The damaged parapet to the bridge at Mill Farm, Weston Bampfylde is to be inspected by the County Bridge Inspector. (See "From your County Councillor"). The amended lease for the proposed play area in Glebe land behind Twines Close has now been received. Mrs. Cottier asked that a further clause be inserted to the effect that the buffer zone can only be sub-let by the Parish Council to the owners of the three bungalows whose land immediately adjoins the said buffer zone. British Rail have now repaired the stiles for which they are responsible (see note at the end of the report). Mr. Cluett welcomed Mr. Rainey who on this occasion represented Sutton Montis. Mr. Rainey requested that Sutton Montis should continue to be included in the new 'Parish News' and this was agreed. It is understood that they will appoint a Correspondent who will be responsible for transmitting news to Mr. Berry. Mr. Rainey thanked the Parish Council on behalf of Sutton Montis. Negotiations are now in hand for the acquisition of the Sparkford Hill Copse by the Trust, and meanwhile, offers of practical help are being welcomed. (See later report). It was learned that the seat known as 'Pensioners Rest' which was presented to the Parish by the late Mrs. E. Windsor has now been moved to the Cricket Field with the agreement of her son, Mr. J. Windsor. It was also noted, however, that there have been objections to the move. Mr. Cluett has asked me to say that the Parish Council reluctantly agreed to the move following complaints of vandalism and misuse of the seat. Many Parishioners will recall that Mr. Tom Windsor, to whose memory his wife dedicated the seat, spent many happy hours enjoying cricket in Sparkford, and it is perhaps befitting that the seat now complements the oak tree which she planted in the Cricket Field. Following on from this it was agreed to consider a request for a litter bin at Twines Close when funds become available. Mr. Cluett thanked Mr. Norman Toop for his very kind offer to overhaul and repaint the Parish Notice Board.
REMINDER
FROM
BRITISH
RAIL
British Rail have issued a timely warning to parents to see that their children do not stray or play on or near railway lines now that the long school holidays are upon us. A similar warning comes from the Countryside Commission regarding the dangers of poisonous plants and berries which grow in our hedgerows and always look so attractive, particularly to small children. Avril Ward. Clerk to the Council.
FROM YOUR COUNTY
COUNCILLOR
Weston Bampfylde Bridge:- The County Surveyor expects to go to tender in September for the repair work to the Bridge. It will be much later in the year before the actual work is done as the road will have to be closed and it would make lifevery difficult for the farmers having to move cattle. Traffic lights:- September should see another set of traffic lights in the area, but this time permanent and planned. These will be at Ansford on the narrow stretch of road by the junction of Ansford Hill Road. Apart from removing the chance of meeting a lorry coming the opposite way on that dangerous length of road it should also slow down the traffic by Ansford School. Barbara Cottier
