GALHAMPTON PLAYGROUP The summer term is nearly at an end we are holding some more toddler sessions on Tuesday 7th July 1:30 – 3:00. Cost per family will be £1.50 EVEREYBODY WELCOME. Our Playgroup staff will be manning children’s activities at Party in the park Galhampton Saturday 11th July. The Playgroup will also be having a display at this year’s Royal Bath & West Show.

New school buildings underway Landscaping and levelling the new primary school site in Queen Camel has begun with a great pile of top soil moved to one end of the site off the West Camel Road opposite the local doctor’s surgery ready to be put back for the school playing field and garden areas.

Excitement is growing at the prospect of the new Countess Gytha School opening, all being well, Easter 2016. Staff and pupils are already thinking about how best to use the modern flexible classroom spaces, a foundation unit including the pre-school and reception class, a special art and technology room and environmental areas including a wetland with pond. The school will also have a purpose build commercial kitchen for proving school meals and an attractive hall.

This ÂŁ4 million investment, by Somerset County Council, in our local rural community of villages and hamlets that feed into Countess Gytha School is aimed at providing an outstanding education facility fit for the 21st Centenary.

Camelot Music Night Davis Hall, West Camel Wednesday 29th July & 26th August 8pm – 11:00pm - £4 Doors open 7.30pm Enjoy an evening of music ranging from classical, traditional, blues, country, folk, boogie, jazz and more. Each month anything from 8 - 12 different extremely talented performers entertain on a variety of instruments, from guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bazooki, flute and keyboards etc.

Sutton Montis Village Hall Sutton Montis Village Hall will be holding a Treasure Hunt and Cream Teas From 2pm to 5pm on Saturday 15th Aug 2015 To raise money for the Hall repair fund - Entry £5 per head, Which of course includes a scrumptious cream tea!

Village Hall Breakfast Committee Representing The Hall, The Church, Playing Field & Weston Bampfylde.

After several meetings it has been decided that this year instead of Saturday fund raising breakfasts we will try a Friday lunch time take-away.

Two dates have been put forward, Friday 31 st July & Friday 7th August If these are successful we may consider trying further Fridays. Still lots to be decided.

Has anyone got a gas B B Q which the Village Hall could borrow to use for the Travellers’ Take Away. 31st July & 7th August? Would be used for cooking burgers. If it came with a helper even better!!

Latest from 3rd Sparkford Beavers, Cubs and Scouts The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from 1st Sparkford – who hail from Sparkford, North Cadbury, Queen Camel, South Cadbury, Marston Magna, North Barrow and all around the area – are having a very active time now the weather is so good. They have been busy learning new skills and getting involved in outdoor activities – from building dens in the woods to bike maintenance, cycling and kayaking. We are delighted that some new leaders and helpers have joined us, and are busy preparing for our next camp. Montgomery Farms have kindly committed to providing a sack of potatoes for each camp for which we are hugely grateful.

With so many now involved the cubs were a bit like sardines in their tent at the last camp, so we are starting to fundraise for our next new patrol tent. The youngsters have lots planned to raise funds, but if you would like to contribute or know someone who might – please do let us know!

The shortage of police on the beat has now become a very real fact. This whether we like it or not has thrown a large amount of responsibility on ourselves. We can no longer rely on a quick police presence crimes. It is even rumored that Neighborhood Watch will be given more responsibility an even the act of patrolling has been raised.

Whatever the outcome it would make sense for everyone to become a member it only costs £1.00 and there is a variety of benefits. Why not ring your local contact & Join.

There is no doubt that in the future we must rely much more on our own resources and help one another. Neighborhood Watch has been behind the purchase of two defibrillators for the village amongst other things, wouldn’t you like t be able to say that in some way you are part of it all. BLUEBELLS As many of you know we did not have a “ BLUEBELL DAY” as such this year. But many of you still came to walk in the wood and enjoy the experience.

Thanks to the Donations we received we have been able to hand over £310.00 to the Queen Camel Health Centre Equipment Fund.

Bishop’s Message – JULY 2015 Roll on those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer!

It was Nat King Cole in the 1960’s who sang about his idealised summer break, with ice cream, the beach and good times all round. Your idea of a good holiday might be different.

For some people, it’s enough to just escape from ‘normal’ - to get away from the alarm clock and the daily routine. It’s cheap, and you don’t even have to go away from home.

Others look for adventure or travel– caving, skydiving, and bungee -jumping, or just tasting a foreign culture.

Two thoughts come to mind.

Firstly, not everyone can have a decent holiday. Those out of work or with caring responsibilities can’t just pack up the car or head for the airport. I’m always inspired by those churches who run holiday clubs: very often the children involved don’t get much else outside the home all summer. It’s a real gift to take the children off the parents’ hands for a day or a week – everyone benefits.

Secondly, holiday is often the time to tackle the big issues in your personal life. Should I change job? Do I want to marry this person? When should I retire? How can I handle this diagnosis? Being away, having time with the right people makes it easier to see things in perspective.

However, it seems to me you can’t take a holiday from saying your prayers. Even in summer, having a care for those less well-off or otherwise disadvantaged, for the Christian, calls you to prayer – and action. And wrestling with personal concerns gets a little simpler if you can make the time to pray through what’s bothering you. Often that’s easier up on a windy clifftop or while you’re idling on the beach.

So, your holiday isn’t really an escape from daily life: it’s more a chance to look at things through different lenses. We should all have holidays, but God doesn’t need one.

Whether it’s on some exotic beach or just in the back garden, he’ll be ready, waiting for you before you get there.

The hymn I the Lord of sea and sky is one of my favourites. Written in 1981 by Dan Schutte its fast becoming a favourite with people at all ages and stages of life. As with many of the best hymns the words can also be used as a personal prayer, just take a look at the chorus: Here I am Lord, Is it I, Lord?

I have heard you calling in the night. I will go Lord, if you lead me I will hold your people in my heart.

These words echo an event in the life of a man who lived 800 years before Christ. Isaiah was living through a time when the world around him was falling apart. There was corruption in high places, the poor were exploited and it seemed the nation and its leaders had totally lost their spiritual/moral compass. Yet one day Isaiah wanders into the Temple and glimpses God in all his glory he also sees perhaps how different the world might be if only people listened to God instead of being tossed and turned by the many conflicting voices of the age. But having been given this vision Isaiah is also given a challenge: ‘what are you going to do about it?’, or in the words of Isaiah chapter 6 ‘who will go for us whom shall we send?’ At first Isaiah is afraid and feels he’s not equal to the task but finally he responds ‘I will go, Lord, send me’. In the face of the received wisdom never volunteer for anything you have to admire Isaiah’s pluck however equally there’s another strand of wisdom that says if you’re not prepared to stand up for something, you’re likely to fall for anything.

Yet reading these words you may be thinking what has this to do with me? I’m never likely to hear God’s call, let alone be given a vision or a challenge, I’m not holy or smart or good enough. I would say to you don’t be so sure. Let me end with a little story about a beautiful Persian carpet which was bought for many millions of pounds by a very wealthy man. When the new owner got it home and inspected it thoroughly he discovered a tiny imperfection. He rang the auction house to complain about how he felt he’d been ripped off only to receive the following reply; the imperfection you find so offensive shows that the carpet is genuine and indeed probably worth far more than you paid for it. The greatest artists always weave one tiny flaw in their design to remind them of the following: Only God creates perfection.

Yet in his grace he takes what we offer: faults, weaknesses, flaws included and fashions something wonderful from them.
